Opis:
The Pogórska Wola palaeovalley of combined tectonic and erosional origin dissects the Mesozoic floor of the Carpathian Foredeep Basin to a depth exceeding 1200 m. It formed during Paleogene times presumably due to fluvial and submarine erosion, concentrated along a local pre-Late Badenian graben system. All members of the foredeep’s Badenian-Sarmatian sedimentary fill attain distinctly greater values inside the palaeovalley than on top of elevated plateaux on palaeovalley shoulders. The fill comprises the Early to Late Badenian sub-evaporite Skawina Formation, the laterally equivalent Late Badenian evaporite Krzyżanowice and Wieliczka formations and the supra-evaporite Late Badenian to Early Sarmatian Machów Formation. Over the plateaux and in the highest palaeovalley segment, the evaporites are developed in the sulphate facies Krzyżanowice Formation, whereas in the lower palaeovalley segments chloride-sulphate facies evaporites of the Wieliczka Formation occur. The rock salt-bearing rocks are involved in thrusting and folding at the Carpathian orogenic front, which helps to assess the lateral extent of the Wieliczka Formation in seismic records. The deep palaeotopographic position of the evaporites inside the palaeovalley, combined with their lithological and sedimentary features, point to their formation via subaqueous gravity flow-driven redeposition of originally shallow-water evaporites, preferentially halite-bearing, presumably combined with precipitation from sulphate and chloride brines at the palaeovalley floor. Both the redeposited sediments and the brines must have come from the adjacent plateaux and from a thrust-sheet top basin, approaching from the south on top of the Cretaceous-Paleogene Carpathian flysch thrust wedge.

A project was developed concerning the operational system of surveillance and the recording of episodic events in the Baltic Sea. In situ information was to be combined with multi-sensory satellite imagery to determine the extent of algal blooms, to track their evolution and that of rapid environmental events like hydrological fronts. The main element of the system was an autonomous Ferry Box module on a ferry operating between Gdynia and Karlskrona, automatically measuring temperature, salinity and chlorophyll a fluorescence. At pre-selected locations, discrete water samples were collected, which were subsequently analysed for their phytoplankton content, and algal hepato- and neurotoxins; they were also used in toxicity tests with Artemia franciscana.

Opis:
The water regime is the main factor contributing to the formation of landscapes in the river deltas of arid zones, any fluctuations in which lead to a change in the integral hydromorphic landscape. After the construction of the Kapshagai reservoir, the anthropogenic load on the ecosystem of the Ili River delta increased, as a result of which degradation processes, such as drying out and salinization, intensified. In the short term, this phenomenon may lead to the desertification of about 1 million ha of land in the modern river delta. In this regard, the main goal of this study is to look at the processes of desertification in the modern delta of the Ili River, using remote sensing data, which allows for quick identification of the long-term dynamics of degradation processes. For this, the authors used satellite data from Landsat 1–5 MSSS and Landsat 8OLI satellites for 1979 and 2019 and soil analysis data obtained through the ground (field) surveys. Using regression analysis of space and soil data, predictors for interpreting space images were identified and maps of landscape drying and soil salinization were compiled, reflecting the changes that have occurred over the past 40 years. As a result, it was found that in 2019, compared to 1979, the area of landscapes covered with vegetation had decreased by 12% and there was a transformation of hydromorphic landscapes into salt marshes and solonetzes. Over the past 40 years, the volume of non-saline soils has decreased by 41.3% and the volume of saline soils has increased to varying degrees. That is, at present, on the territory of the modern delta, a difficult land improvement situation has developed associated with the cessation of spring and summer floods due to the intensive water use at the Chinese and Kazakh sides.

Acoustic measurements were conducted at different seasons in the last five years at a fixed point of the Baltic Sea at a frequency 30 kHzcon currently with temperature and salinity sampling. Echosounding records were used to determine the seasonal and diurnal migration patterns of scattering layers in accordance with thermohaline conditions. Different seasonal patterns of nocturnal aggregations of organisms dependent on the temperature gradient in the thermocline were found. This paper illustrates the diurnal distributions of sound scattering layers and analyses the way they are linked to the physical structure of the water.

Opis:
The water masses in Fram Strait have been analyzed on the basis of hydrographic casts taken in summer 1984 during the MIZEX 84 experiment. In particular, θ − S diagrams for 16 areas, each 5◦ in longitude and 1◦ in latitude, covering the strait from 77◦N to 81◦ N are used to characterize the water masses and discuss their possible origin. Near the surface, the East Greenland Polar Front clearly separates the lighter, cold and fresh Polar Water (PW) from the heavier, warm and saline Atlantic Water (AW). In the upper ocean, the data show a large spreading of the temperature maximum in the θ − S space associated with different modes of the AW recirculating southward below the PW. Two geographically distinct salinity minima are found in the intermediate layer below the AW. The denser one, in the Boreas Basin, is a feature typical of the Arctic Intermediate Water (AIW) formed by winter convection to the south of the strait, while the lighter one is sandwiched in the Arctic Ocean outflow between the AW layer and the Upper Polar Deep Water (UPDW) characterized by a downward salinity increase. In the deep layer, two salinity maxima are present. The shallower (and warmer) one, associated with the Canadian Basin Deep Water (CBDW), appears all along the East Greenland Slope. A similar but weaker maximum is also found in the southeastern part of the strait. This maximum is perhaps a remnant of the maximum in the East Greenland Current after it has been recirculated back to the strait around the cyclonic gyres of the Nordic Seas. The deeper one appears typically as a near-bottom salinity jump characteristic of the Eurasian Basin Deep Water (EBDW). The jump is found in two distinct areas of the strait, to the north-west in the Lena Trough and to the south-east in the rift valley of the Knipovich Ridge. The maximum in the former area should have been advected from the Arctic Ocean below the CBDW, while the maximum in the latter area might have originated from haline convection on the adjacent shelves. Some EBDW is trapped in the Molloy Deep over a denser water with salinity decreasing down to the bottom and temperature in the range of the Greenland Sea Deep Water (GSDW).

Opis:
Problem zasolonych wód, odprowadzanych z tych kopalń, wymaga więc efektywnego i realistycznego rozwiązania. W artykule przedstawiono wielowariantową analizę, realnych ekonomicznie i technicznie, opcji ograniczenia negatywnego wpływu zrzutu słonych wód kopalnianych na rzeki. Analizowano następujące opcje: - działania górniczo-geologiczne prowadzone w kopalniach GSW S.A. i KWK Budryk, - możliwość magazynowania wód słonych w KWK Dębieńsko i ich zrzut w warunkach wysokich przepływów w rzekach, - ewentualną likwidację kopalń zrzucających słone wody do odbiorników powierzchniowych, - możliwości wtłaczania słonych wód do górotworu, - połączenie kopalń kolektorem i przesył wód do rzeki Odry w odpowiednim przekroju - hydrotechniczna metoda ochrony rzeki Bierawki, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" bez dodatkowych inwestycji usprawniających, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" uzupełnionego o odzysk soli z ługów pokrystalizacyjnych, - kontynuację działania Zakładu Odsalania "Dębieńsko" uzupełnionego o odzysk soli z ługów pokrystalizacyjnych wraz z odzyskiem bromu i jodu.
The Bierawka river, a right-bank tributary of the Oder river, is one of the most salined rivers in Upper Silesia. Am essential impact on its salinity level have the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GSW S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery. The problem of salined wasters, discharged from these mines, requires thus an efficient and realistic solution. The publication presents a multi-variant analysis of reduction options of the negative impact of discharge of salt mine waters into rivers, real from the view-point of economics and technology. The following options were analysed: - rnining and geological activities conducted in the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GWS S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery, - possibility to storage salty wasters from "Dębieńsko" Colliery and their discharge in conditions of high flows in rivers, - possible closure of mines discharging salty waters into surface receivers, - possibilities of injection of salty waters to the rock mass, - connection of mines by means of a collector and transmission of waters of Oder river in the suitable cross-section - hydrotechnical method of Bierawka river protection, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant without additional improving investments, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant supplemented by salt recovery from post-crystallsation lyes, - continuation of activities of the "Dębieńsko" Desalination Plant supplemented by salt recovery from post-crystallsation lyes along with bromine and iodine recovery. In order to assess the usefulness of individual solutions, an analysis of strong and weak sides as well as chances and hazards was carried out (SWOT analysis). It has been ascertained, that the optimum solution, from the view-point of economics and environmental protection, is: - continuation and extension of the scope of use of mining and geological methods reducing the inflow of salty waters to mine workings (the so-called reduction of inflows "at the source") in the mines of the Gliwice Coal Company (GSW S.A.) and "Budryk" Colliery, - desalination of all brines from mines: "Knurów", "Budryk", "Szczyglowice" and "Dębieńsko" (under closure procedure) in the modernised Desalination Plant "Dębieńsko", enabling additional salt recovery from partial utilisation of post-crystallsation lyes. Because the activity of the Desalination Plant significantly reduces the discharge of the chloride and sulfate loads into the Bierawka river and has essential influence on the water purity state in this river, a detailed analysis of work impact of the Desalination Plant on the Bierawka and Oder water quality has been performed, using different solutions. Mamtaining of the Desalination Plant in operation and its development will allow a durable elimination of chlorine and sulfate loads from salty mine waters; then the salinity of the Bierawka river at the estuary to the Oder river will be contained within limits admissible in relation to waters of third class purity.

An important question stated in the presented paper is: Could rotifers be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic environments? Rotifers are one of the most important components of the invertebrate fauna of the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. However, investigations of their distribution, diversity and an ecological role in the environment have been widely neglected, mainly due to the methodological and taxonomical difficulties. During the investigations 176 species of rotifers were found, including the endemic and cosmopolitan species. Their existence is directly proportional to microvariations of humidity factor. Scientists still have poor knowledge about the occurrence of rotifer species in recently studied habitats e.g. cryoconite holes, nunataks or soil. Probably rotifers could be the indicators of climate change in the Antarctic freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems but more investigations and monitoring studies are needed.

Quality of water resources in Annaba plain (North East) of Algeria is facing a serious challenge due to industrialisation and excessive exploitation of water. Therefore, 29 groundwater samples were collected from this area to assess their hydrogeochemistry and suitability for irrigation purposes. The groundwater samples were analysed for distribution of chemical elements Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3 , Cl, and SO4 2−. It also includes pH, electrical conductivity. The hydrochimical study has shown that the facieses are changing between a pole calcium-chloride-sulphate and sodium-chloride types. The results also showed that the salinity is the major problem with water for irrigation use (58% of samples fall into C3S1 class). As a result, the quality of the groundwater is not suitable for sustainable crop production and soil health without appropriate remediation.

Shoreline changes and groundwater quality monitoring have become pressing issues for the coastal region of Bangladesh. This study investigated the shoreline changes from 2000 to 2020 and evaluated the groundwater quality, as well as SWI in the Kuakata coastal area. While analyzing satellite images, the temporal shoreline changes were assessed through the Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS) in ArcGIS 10.4.1. Higher erosion rates (>2 m/year) were found in the southernmost part and the SE part of the studied area. Twenty-five groundwater samples were collected, and the physicochemical parameters were measured to assess the groundwater quality. The geographic information system (GIS) was used to assess the spatial variation of the EC, pH, and Cl⁻ contents through the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation method. The EC, Cl⁻, and pH values of the studied groundwater ranged from (1.2 mS/cm to 19.5 mS/cm), (79.88 mg/L to 11241.67 mg/L), and (7.9 to 8.7), repectively. The analysis revealed that the majority of the groundwater samples were unsuitable for drinking purpose due to higher EC and Cl⁻ values. Saline water intrusion (SWI) was determined by using the alternative EC vs Cl⁻ method in the southern part of the Kuakata beach area, which was closest to the sea.

Dry areas are especially exposed to the risk of water shortages and elevated mineralization. High water salinity, caused by low precipitation, high evaporation and human impact, usually strongly limits the use of the water for irrigation. The aim of the study was to assess the quality and irrigation purpose suitability of alluvial water in the Erfoud oasis, Morocco. The samples of water were collected from 20 wells in June 2017. We observed excessive concentrations of many parameters i.a.: NO3, Cd, Ni, Na, NH4, Cl, SO4, Fe, Cr. To determine the possibility to use the water for irrigation purposes, the Sodium Adsorption Ratio (SAR), sodium percentage (%Na), permeability index (PI), Kelly’s ratio (KR), magnesium hazards (MH) and electrical conductivity (EC) were assessed. The values of KR and MH qualified the waters as unsuitable for irrigation purposes. The observed %Na indicates that the groundwater is permissible for irrigation purposes, and permeability index, that it is of moderate quality. However, water classification using the SAR vs EC diagram confirms its high and very high alkali and salinity hazard. The mean EC value of the water was 9.5 mS cm−1.

A total of 439 measurements of downward ultraviolet irradiance in North European coastal waters have been analysed, half of which have been taken from other authors. The depths Z(10%) where the irradiance is reduced to 10% of its surface value vary by one order of magnitude in the open coastal waters,b oth at wavelengths of 310 nm (0.3–10.4 m) and 380 nm (1.2–13.0 m). In the fjords and estuaries the depth ranges are reduced to 0.08–6.1 m at 310 nm and 0.18–7.7 m at 380 nm. Mixing with saline ocean waters can increase these light penetration depths to more than 10 m,while river water can reduce them to a few centimetres.

Opis:
Chemical analyses usually present the overall concentration of the test element or ion in its most common form. Geochemical modeling allows the calculation of the distribution and concentrations of aqueous species, based on the results of chemical analysis and physical – chemical measurements. The initial characterization of inorganic forms of bromine in groundwater was based on the undertaken geochemical modeling. The studies considered waters of varying mineralization, including varyingious contents of bromine. Fresh water contains small quantities of bromine. The average content of bromine in surface water and active exchange zone groundwater generally does not exceed 0,2 mg/L. The mineralized waters and also some specific therapeutic waters, thermal waters and brines, may contain bromides in amounts greater than in ordinary groundwater. During water treatment processes, the oxidation of bromide can cause the formation of carcinogenic bromate and organic bromine compounds, also mutagenic. The distribution of bromine species in waters of different chemical type and of varied salinity, has been calculated using the program PHREEQC (Parkhurst, Apello 1999). The author used her own research of infiltration of saline water flowing into the Wieliczka salt deposits and also the results of sample analyses of waters with different contents of bromide, both in Poland and the U.S. The study also includes analyses of leachate from three different landfills in the south of Poland. Chemical characteristics were collected from author's own research as well as published data. There were 33 analyses of waters of different chemical characteristic, most of them saline (with chloride ion content larger than 20% milieqvalent). Bromine species were analyzed in terms of salinity and chemical type of water. The calculations also take into consideration the species of bromine which are potentially conducive to the formation of carcinogenic compounds. The quantitative relationship between speciation content and ionic strength, chlorides, bromides and pH was analyzed statistically and presented in the figures. Based on the results of calculations of bromine speciation resulting from geochemical modeling, it can be stated that the main form of bromine occurrence is bromide ion, which accounts for more than 93% of all speculations. In the waters of low ionic strength, it is typically up to 100%. The maximum content of NaBr in the studied waters exceedes 7%. It should be noted that bromide ion is not always present in aqueous solutions. The content of NaBr increases with the ionic strength of the aqueous solution. Other bromine speciations account for only a fraction of a percent. There was no occurrence of bromate BrO3-and the percentage of undissociated forms (HBrO) did not exceed the value of 1E-19, which is about 5.4 E-21 mg/L. Geochemical modeling carried out confirmed the prevalence of bromine in aqueous solution in ionic form (bromide).
