FUNERARY RITUAL OF GREEKS IN ANTIQUITY AS REFLECTED IN FUNERARY EPIGRAMSThe author discusses the Greek funerary verse-inscriptions as the primary sources for the study of Greek burial rituals (Classical, Hellenistic, Greek-Roman). Funerary epigrams constitute an invaluable source, as funeral, an ordinary event of daily life did not draw enough attention of ancient writers. Archaeological sources, on the other hand, are too often ambiguous and fragmentary. As a result, epigrams help us most to determine the way funerary rites in Greek antiquity were performed; moreover, they give us also fi rst-hand accounts of these practices, which is unparalleled by any of the extant literary testimonies. The importance of funerary rites as ta nomizomena in verse inscriptions is noticeable; most important elements of burial are well documented, starting with prothesis, ritual lamentation, procession, interment or cremation, funeral offerings, and concluded with lustrations, funeral banquet and subsequent visitations of the tombs.

The axiom extra eccelsiam nulla salus occurred in the utterances of many early Christian authors. The study examines three of them: Origen, St. Cyprian and St. Augustine. They were convinced that there was no salvation outside the Church because for them the two ideas: the Church and salvation were closely interconnected. As regards the meaning of salvation, it was not a subject of dispute in the Church of the first centuries, but such was not the case with the concept of the Church, which was to subsist in unity, guard the deposit of the Truth and maintain the unbroken apostolic succession. These criteria were by no means fulfilled by schismatics and heretics, so they could offer neither salvation nor valid baptism for the forgiveness of personal sins.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie postrzegania menstruacji w starożytności w świecie grecko-rzymskim, żydowskim oraz chrześcijańskim, gdzie punktem wyjścia jest ewangeliczna perykopa o kobiecie cierpiącej na upływ krwi. Najpierw pojawiają się przykłady wypowiedzi i poglądów na temat przeżywających krwawienie miesięczne kobiet autorów rzymskich i greckich. Następnie zaprezentowane zostają źródła dotyczące sytuacji kobiet przeżywających menstruację oraz cierpiących z powodu chorobliwego upływu krwi wśród żydów, w tym wspomniana scena z Ewangelii. Trzecia część artykułu dotyczy opinii pisarzy chrześcijańskich na temat tego, czy kobiety mające menstruację powinny być wykluczone z życia religijnego.
The aim of the text is to present the perception of menstruation in antiquity in the Graeco-Roman, Jewish and Christian worlds, where the starting point is the pericope on the woman with the blood flow in the Gospels. First, there are examples of statements and views of the Roman and Greek authors about menstruating women. Then sources are presented about the situation of women menstruating and suffering from the abnormal blood flow among Jews, including the scene from the Gospels mentioned above. The third part of the article concerns the view of Christian authors about the issue whether women who have menstruation should be excluded from religious life.

The si navis ex Asia venerit condition made a spectacular career in the texts of Roman jurists. It was so characteristic that even the medieval works that drew on the Roman tradition had plenty of referrals to that condition. Its popularity was obviously connected with its reference to that sphere of life that was essential for the development of the Roman state. However, there is not enough data to allow determination to what extent the frequency of the reference to those words was influenced by sociological factors, or the authority of jurists whose words were quoted, and who referred to that condition. In other words, whether it was the ‘charisma’ of those authorities that played a decisive role in its wide reception and recognition. The review of texts that contain the formula of the above condition allows us to formulate a thesis that the si navis ex Asia venerit condition was used to present issues from almost all areas of law, including the procedural law. It usually took the form of a suspending, casuistic and positive condition. It appeared only once as a negative condition (Digests 44,7,44,2). A careful analysis of individual fragments of the selected texts in which the condition did appear allows us to formulate a postulate that a philological method in the research into Roman law should be used with a substantial degree of caution.
