The article considers the translation by Wiktor Woroszylski of various types of intertextual elements included by Iosif Brodski in his poem Два часа в резервуаре (In English – Two hours in the tank). Regardless of the different translation decisions and noticeable associative shifts that concern specific intertextual elements, the translation as a whole should be considered successful. Nevertheless, in the course of the analysis, the author comes to the conclusion that in the case of an intertextualized text (one that is saturated with intertextual elements), the preservation in the translation of the associative chains that make up the network of intertextual associations is more important than the adequacy of the specific elements of the text.

Odwołując się do metafory przeprawy przez niebezpieczne morze, można powiedzieć, że tłumacz własnego tekstu rzeczywiście zapuszcza się na jakieś nieznane wody, meandruje między górami lodowymi źródłowych i docelowych języków, kultur i tradycji pisarstwa akademickiego. Niniejszy artykuł jest zaproszeniem do prześledzenia procesu autoprzekładu na język angielski mojej własnej książki pt. Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, wydanej po polsku w 2018 roku, a osadzonej tematycznie w (głównie) słowiańskich tradycjach etnolingwistyki i badań nad językowym obrazem świata. Książka ukazała się w języku angielskim w 2021 roku pod tytułem Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. Rozważane w artykule aspekty autoprzekładu obejmują pamięć autora tekstu źródłowego (tj. moją własną) dotyczącą procesu pisania oryginału, polski i angielski styl akademicki, odtwarzanie terminologii (w tym kluczowego terminu językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, czy pojęcie/koncept – concept), sam tytuł monografii jako aspekt rekonstrukcji treści, a także zarządzanie cytatami. Co więcej, proces autoprzekładu okazał się niełatwy, bo wysiłek zrozumienia autora oryginału powiększył się o wymiar zmagania, by zrozumieć samą siebie: własne myśli i intuicje, zapisane jakiś czas temu.
To use the metaphor of a voyage across a rough sea, it can be said that a self-translator does indeed venture into some unknown waters, meandering between the icebergs of the source and target languages, cultures and academic writing traditions. This study is an invitation to trace back the process of self-translation into English of my own book Przekładanie obrazu świata. Językowy obraz świata w przekładzie artystycznym, published in Polish in 2018, and couched within the (mostly) Slavic traditions of ethnolinguistics and the study of linguistic worldviews. The book appeared in English in 2021 under the title Translating a Worldview. Linguistic Worldview in Literary Translation. The aspects of self-translation considered in the paper include the source-text author’s (i.e. my own) memory of the (original) writing process, the Polish and English academic styles, re-creation of the terminology (including the key terms językowy obraz świata – linguistic worldview/linguistic view of X, or pojęcie/koncept – concept), the title itself as an aspect of content reconstruction, as well as management of quotations. Moreover, the process of self-translation turned out to be no easy task as the effort to understand the original author was doubled by the struggle to understand myself: my own thoughts and intuitions, recorded some time ago.

Comic books are increasingly being used as a material for creating theatre plays. In Poland, first theatre adaptations of comics appeared in the mid-20th century, but on Broadway, comic strips have provided source material for theatre plays since its outsets in the late 1800s. In this paper I present a short history of the most important comic book adaptations for the theatre in Poland, with an emphasis on plays based on a Henryk Jerzy Chmielewski’s series Tytus, Romek i A’Tomek. I ponder upon the connotations between comic books and music, and bring into consideration many different forms that comic book adaptations can take. Above all, I analyse in details a few examples (Polish productions Staś i Zła Noga [Staś and the Bad Leg] by Bartłomiej Błaszczyński and Kajko i Kokosz by Marta Ogrodzińska, and an American production Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark by Julie Taymor) for the purpose of discussing the strategies of putting the comic book stories onto the stage and the difficulties involved with the process.

This article focuses on the implementation of Directive 2012/13 on the Right to Information with reference to foreigners arrested in the Member State of the EU. In particular, the Author analyses whether foreigners provided with a Letter of Rights receive the same information despite their handicap of not understanding the language. Special attention is given to how the Netherlands and Poland deal with the Letter of Rights for foreigners. The picture that emerges concerning foreigners is that providing them with a Letter of Rights in their language is seriously handicapped in almost all aspects: the timing (availability), the linguistic quality, the accessibility and simplicity. This situation creates severe risks concerning the right to a fair trial for foreigners. They may not invoke rights because they do not know them. They may not come to their own trial because they did not understand.

Cultural, educational and professional frameworks recognised by our civilization have been formulated as texts. Translation is the only method allowing for their global dissemination. Religions, literatures, learning theories and organizational cultures are products of translation. Yet, the relevance of translation is not only a matter of the past. It is argued in this article that translation is relevant today. In its educational aspect, translation can help realize that language differences are a resource in text comprehension and meaning making. Professional benefits of translating include language fluency that is more than a technical skill: it enables recognising nuances of meaning and sense, allowing for realistic language use. It can be a core advantage for specialists in creative industry, for industry analysts and for lots of other professionals engaging in cross-cultural interactions. Finally, being a translator one has a transversal competence of service provision.

Celem artykułu jest próba ukazania znaczenia przekładu specjalistycznych terminów anglojęzycznych na język polski dla rozwoju edukacji włączającej w naszym kraju. Nowe terminy i pojęcia pojawiają się w światowych badaniach nad zjawiskiem niepełnosprawności wraz z nowatorskimi koncepcjami, aktualizacją klasyfikacji międzynarodowych, pionierskimi produktami i technologiami oraz koniecznością dostosowania systemu edukacji do europejskich regulacji prawnych. W publikacji zastosowano metodę jakościowej analizy danych zastanych znajdujących się w publikacjach dostępnych w repozytoriach cyfrowych. Kwerenda była skoncentrowana na problematyce pojawiania się nowej terminologii w kontekście implementowania założeń edukacji włączającej. Autorka stwierdza, że przyswajanie języka specjalistycznego nie tylko kształtuje kompetencje językowe, ale również merytoryczne u nauczycieli przedszkoli i szkół ogólnodostępnych. Specjalistyczna biegłość językowa, transfer najnowszej wiedzy, przełamanie barier językowych oddziałują na świadomość społeczną i udoskonalanie praktyki edukacyjnej. Istnieje realne ryzyko, że bez wprowadzania polskiego przekładu wiele terminów i pojęć nie pojawi się w przestrzeni językowej ze względu na publikowanie przez polskich naukowców często wyłącznie w języku angielskim, zgodnie z trendem umiędzynarodowienia polskiej nauki.
The aim of the article is to make an attempt at showing the importance of translating specialist English terms into Polish for the development of inclusive education in our country. New terms and concepts appear in global research on the phenomenon of disability along with innovative concepts, updating international classifications, pioneering products and technologies, and meeting the need to adapt the education system to European legal regulations. The method of qualitative analysis of the desk research contained in publications available in digital repositories was used. The query was focused on the issue of the emergence of new terminology in the context of implementing the assumptions of inclusive education. The author states that the acquisition of a specialist language not only builds language competences, but also shapes the substantive competences of teachers in kindergartens and mainstream schools. Specialist language proficiency, transfer of the latest knowledge, breaking language barriers all affect social awareness and improve educational practice. There is a real risk that without a Polish translation, many terms and concepts will not appear in the language space due to the fact that Polish scientists often publish only in English, in line with the trend of the internationalization of the Polish science.

This article deals with the Croatian and Serbian translation of the Silesian dialect, which appears in Wojciech Kuczok’s novel Gnój. The analysis includes the dialect stylization present in the source text, as well as the strategies and techniques used for its translations. The various translation solutions used by the translators also were compared and evaluated.
U radu se analiziraju strategije i tehnike prevođenja šleskog dijalekta kao posebnog jezičnog koda i naziva kulturno specifičnih elemenata vezanih uz Šlesku na hrvatski i srpski jezik. U obzir se uzimaju replike likova romana Gnój Wojciecha Kuczoka (hrv. Glib, srp. Pogan) koje je autor posebno istaknuo u tekstu pomoću navodnika, drugim riječima „živi šleski govor“. Polazišna je točka definiranje stilizacije književnog teksta u stručnoj literaturi, a potom slijedi prikaz posebnosti dijalektizacije u izvornom tekstu romana. Nadalje se opisuju, uspoređuju i ocjenjuju metode stilizacije teksta koje su prisutne u hrvatskom i srpskom prijevodu. Na osnovi prikupljenih podataka hrvatsku se strategiju prevođenja zbog potpune neutralizacije može opisati kao „prešućivanje“, dok je srpska strategija prevođenja svojevrstan „dijalog“ s originalnim tekstom, u kojemu se rabi supstitucija temeljena na kolokvijalizaciji i djelomičnoj dijalektizaciji idiostila likova.

Since there are many differences between the standard Croatian language and the Croatian dialects (Čakavian, Kajkavian and Štokavian), Croatian literary works written in dialects usually include a glossary or otherwise try to bring their language closer to inodialect readers. This article presents the rise of translated Polish literature to the Macedonian language in the thirty years period since Macedonia gained independence from Yugoslavia and transformed from a socialist to a capitalist system. The rise of private publishing houses automatically meant the rise of translating from other languages; in addition, the rise of foreign funds and especially the financial support by the EU in culture was a relevant factor for developing literary translations from Polish to the Macedonian language. The main part of this article is about the works which have been translated, their importance and the methods used in making the choices on what to translate.
Оваа статија е за рецепцијата на полската книжевност во Македонија и за промените во преведувачката политика во последните триесет години. Авторка та се обидува да ги издвои најважните библиографски единици од преведената литература и да даде една слика на тоа што и зошто се преведувало од полски јазик во овој период. Но, исто така, дава и еден кус преглед на мотивите и факторите кои влијаеле на овој неверојатен подем на преведувањето од полски јазик. Се разбира, разликите со претходниот период се очигледни, но исто така е важно да се нагласи дека полската литература во поново време станува значително позабележлива на книжевната сцена, што во голем дел е заслуга на амбициите на одделни издавачки куќи и преведувачи.

This article considers the issues that arise in translating between different languages and cultures with a focus on wordplay. Finding appropriate equivalences can be a complicated process that goes beyond linguistic limitations to cultural interpretations of meaning. Wordplay can serve as an aspect that exist as additional elements of information and a means to create a specific atmosphere within the narrative. This can often be reliant on cultural cues, especially in the case of children’s fantasy series wherein culturally specific references to folktales may be subtly interwoven into the tale using wordplay. This can then lead to complications when being translated. As such, this is a venture into how the wordplay in Harry Potter has been translated into Japanese with the intent to use this data to create a resource for students studying translation between the two languages by acknowledging the conflicting needs of clarity and amusement.

Opis:
Le but de cet article est d’analyser les équivalents lexicographiques du dictionnaire bilingue espagnol-guarani du jésuite Blas Pretovio Vocabulario de lengua guarani (1728), dont un exemplaire se trouve aujourd’hui à la Bibliothèque Jagellonne. Les noms d’animaux choisis pour l’analyse forment un champ sémantique dans lequel, comme on peut le supposer, les différences de la réalité extra-linguistique trouveront leur reflet dans divers mécanismes de traduction. Bien qu’à première vue on ait affaire à une liste classique d’équivalents dans un dictionnaire bilingue, il s’avère que la microstructure du dictionnaire en dit long sur la conscience lexicographique de l’auteur, tant pour le definiendum (quels noms semblent importants pour un utilisateur potentiel) que pour le definiens (quels sont les équivalents et comment les noms d’animaux sont traduits, quelles autres informations peuvent se trouver dans les entrées du dictionnaire, etc.). En outre, le travail peut contribuer à l’étude de l’espagnol du XVIIIe siècle et de la langue appelée « le guarani jésuite » utilisé dans les zones d’anciennes réductions, et en même temps fournit des informations sur le monde extra-linguistique et sur les contacts linguistiques et culturels dans les réductions jésuites. L’étude ci-dessus fait partie de ce qu’on appelle « linguistique missionnaire » et tente de compléter le domaine vaste et relativement peu étudié de la lexicographie hispano-américaine.
Celem niniejszego artykułu jest analiza ekwiwalentów leksykograficznych w dwujęzycznym słowniku hiszpańsko-guarani autorstwa jezuity Blasa Pretovio Vocabulario de lengua guarani (1728), którego kopia znajduje się obecnie w Bibliotece Jagiellońskiej. Korpus badawczy stanowią wyekscerpowane nazwy zwierząt, ponieważ jest to pole semantyczne, w którym, jak możemy zakładać, różnice w rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej znajdą swoje odbicie w różnorodnych mechanizmach przekładu. Chociaż na pierwszy rzut oka mamy do czynienia z klasyczną listą ekwiwalentów w słowniku dwujęzycznym, okazuje się, że mikrostruktura słownika wiele mówi o świadomości leksykograficznej autora, zarówno jeśli chodzi o definiendum (które nazwy wydają się ważne dla potencjalnego użytkownika) jak i o definiens (za pomocą jakich ekwiwalentów i jak są tłumaczone nazwy zwierząt, jakie inne informacje znajdziemy w hasłach słownikowych itp.). Ponadto praca może stanowić przyczynek do badań nad XVIII-wiecznym hiszpańskim i tzw. jezuickim guarani, używanym na terenach byłych redukcji, a jednocześnie mówi wiele o świecie pozajęzykowym i kontaktach językowo-kulturowych w redukcjach jezuickich. Powyższe studium sytuuje się w ramach tzw. językoznawstwa misyjnego i jest próbą uzupełnienia rozległego i stosunkowo mało rozwiniętego obszaru leksykografii hispanoamerykańskiej.
The objective of this article is to analyse the lexicographic equivalents in the Spanish-Guarani bilingual dictionary composed by the Jesuit Blas Pretovio, Vocabulary of the Guarani language (1728), a copy of which is currently in the Jagiellonian Library. The research corpus consists of the excerpted names of animals because it is a semantic field in which, we can assume, the differences in the extra-linguistic reality will be reflected in various translation mechanisms. Although at first glance we are dealing with a classic list of equivalents in a bilingual dictionary, it turns out that the microstructure of the dictionary reveals a lot about the author’s lexicographic awareness, whether it is the definiendum (which names seem important to the potential dictionary reader) and the definiens (how the names of the animals are translated, what other information we find in the dictionary entries, etc.). In addition, this study constitutes material to help investigate the state of the Spanish language in the 18th century and the so-called Jesuit Guarani used in the Guarani missions and, to the same degree, it reveals much about the extralinguistic world and linguistic-cultural contacts in the Jesuit reductions. This study, beyond its evident lexicographic focus, is situated within the so-called missionary linguistics and, even partially, is an attempt to help complete the vast and relatively little-explored area of Hispanic-Amerindian lexicography.

Intertextuality focuses on the relationship between different texts, either spoken or written. These connections have been the subject of research for many scholars around the world and initially were discussed mainly from the point of view of literary theory (Tomaszkiewicz, 2006, p. 175). The aim of this paper is to examine intertextual references in the context of translation theory, taking into account the various techniques and strategies employed when translating direct or indirect references in a dubbing format. The author analyses dialogues from the DreamWorks production “Shrek” (2001), the Disney films “Zootopia” (2016) and “Wreck-It-Ralph” (2012), as well as the Pixar Animation Studios film “Toy Story 3” (2010) with the aim of identifying intertextual references in the source text and comparing them with their Polish and German translations. The author also considers the sources of intertextuality in animation films and the translator’s role in decontextualizing this genre in the target language, drawing attention to the issue of discourse and the agency of audiovisual translators.
Intertekstualność skupia się na relacjach między tekstami, zarówno mówionymi, jak i pisanymi. Powiązania te są obecnie przedmiotem badań wielu naukowców na całym świecie, choć początkowo analizowane były wyłącznie z punktu widzenia literaturoznawczego (Tomaszkiewicz, 2006, s. 175). Celem artykułu jest analiza odniesień intertekstualnych w kontekście teorii przekładu, a zwłaszcza technik i strategii użytych podczas tłumaczenia dosłownych i pośrednich nawiązań w dubbingu. Analizie poddane zostały dialogi animacji „Shrek” (2001) wytwórni DreamWorks, „Zwierzogród” (2016) i „Ralph Demolka” (2012) Disneya oraz „Toy Story 3” (2010) Pixara w celu zidentyfikowania nawiązań intertekstualnych w tekście źródłowym i ich porównania z polskim i niemieckim tłumaczeniem. Autorka zwraca również uwagę na źródła intertekstualności w filmach animowanych i rolę tłumacza w rekontekstualizacji nawiązań w tekście docelowym, odnosząc się do pojęcia dyskursu i sprawczości tłumacza audiowizualnego.

It is often said that early Romanian biblical translations from Church Slavonic follow the source texts slavishly. This is believed to be especially true about the 16th century Romanian Psalters, a group of seven texts (both printed and hand-copied) descending from a single translation. Indeed, these texts stay close to their Church Slavonic originals in topic, lexical content, and orthographical rules. However, we aim to describe how the 16th century translators and redactors dealt with Church Slavonic structures that could not be easily adapted into Romanian by means of formal equivalence. The Slavonic present participle, which appears plenty in the Slavonic Psalter, was chosen as litmus test. While theoretically having a formal correspondent in Old Romanian (the gerund), the Slavonic present participle has a range of uses and meanings that the Old Romanian gerund lacks. Thus, Romanian scribes must depart from the comfort of formal equivalence that calques and loans provide and choose the translation that convey meaning. The dynamic equivalence is obtained by selecting different solutions: gerunds, adjectives, objects and, most often, clauses, especially relative ones. Rendering participles with clauses (i.e. adjectives with verbs) forces the translator to make decisions going beyond the Slavonic participle itself. The analysis shows a tension between betraying the Slavonic text as little as possible and rendering it to the best of the redactor’s ability.
