We consider elliptic problems on graphs under given loads and bilateral contact conditions. We ask the question: which graph is best suited to sustain the loads and the constraints. More precisely, given a cost function we may look at a multiple node of the graph with edge degree q and ask as to whether that node should be resolved into a number of nodes of edge degree less than q, in order to decrease the cost. With this question in mind, we are looking into the sensitivity analysis of a graph carrying a second order elliptic equation with respect to changing its topology by releasing nodes with high edge degree or including an edge. With the machinery at hand developed here, we are in the position to define the topological gradient of an elliptic problem on a graph.

All atomic and molecular properties are governed by an electron density distribution. Thus, the methods that deal with an analysis of the electron density distribution should have a particular appeal for chemists and help to understand the electron structure of molecules. The Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules gives the unique opportunity to have an insight into a region (e.g., an atom) of a given system (e.g. a molecule), delivering partitioning scheme which is defined explicitly within the rigorous quantum theory, from one side, and is applicable for experimentally available set of observables, from the other side. In that way QTAIM delivers a chemist a theoretical tool to study a small part of a molecule only, instead of dealing with the total energy of a whole system. In consequence, QTAIM has become one of the most powerful utilities of modern chemistry, forming a bridge between advanced theoretical and experimental techniques. In particular the properties of the electron density function in the so-called bond critical point (BCP, the (3, -1) saddle point on electron density curvature) seem to be valuable information for chemists, since it was proven in many papers that the chemical bonding can be characterized and classified on the basis of electron density characteristics measured in BCPs . In this review we firstly give a brief introduction to the theory, explaining most basic terms and dependences. In the main part of the review we discuss application of QTAIM in the qualitative and quantitative analysis of several various noncovalent interactions, focusing readers attention on such aspects as classification of interactions and interaction energy assessment. Both theoretical and experimental approaches are taken into account. We also discuss extensions of QTAIM to the analysis of the so called source function – the method which additionally enlarge interpretative possibilities of its parent theory. Finally, we give some examples which perhaps escape a rigorous QTAIM definition of chemical bonding. We acquaint the potential reader with arguments being pro- and against the QTAIM-based deterministic model of a chemical bond.

Artykuł dotyczy oceny przydatności analizy topologicznej obrazów termowizyjnych do ciągłego diagnozowania maszyn i urządzeń. W trakcie badań rozpatrywano zbiór 81 cech topologicznych, z którego stosując dyskryminacyjną analizę Fishera, wyselekcjonowano podzbiór 10 cech relewantnych. Analizie poddano sekwencję obrazów termowizyjnych maszyny wirnikowej, zarejestrowanych w trakcie czynnego eksperymentu diagnostycznego. Wyznaczone cechy pozwoliły na wyznaczenie sygnałów diagnostycznych, których ocena pozwala na identyfikację stanu technicznego maszyny.
In the paper results of investigations aimed at verification of usefulness of applying the thermogram topological analysis to continuous diagnostics of machines and devices are presented. The analysis was applied to sequences of 840 thermograms of the rotating machinery model obtained from active diagnostic experiments performed in a laboratory of the Department of Fundamentals of Machinery Design. During the experiment six technical conditions of the object were simulated. At least three of them were very similar to each other and were simulated in order to check the possibility of detecting weak changes of the condition. The thermogram was analyzed within two Regions of Interest (ROI) representing machine bearing housings of the same type. The set of 81 features was calculated for each ROI. Consideration of two ROIs representing the same type of the bearing housing was expected to be beneficial for verification of different image features and condition classifiers. Due to the huge number of thermogram features it was necessary to select the subsets of relevant features characterized by the optimal performance. The classical feature selection method based on Fisher discriminat analysis was used to limit the set to 10 relevant features. The estimated features allow generating diagnostic signals enabling classification of the machine technical conditions. An artificial neural network was used as a condition classifier. Very promising results of the classification confirmed the usefulness of selected topological features to estimation and recognition of the machine technical condition.

The Topological Derivative has been recognized as a powerful tool in obtaining the optimal topology for several kinds of engineering problems. This derivative provides the sensitivity of the cost functional for a boundary value problem for nucleation of a small hole or a small inclusion at a given point of the domain of integration. In this paper, we present a topological asymptotic analysis with respect to the size of singular domain perturbation for a coupled nonlinear PDEs system with an obstacle on the boundary. The domain decomposition method, referring to the SteklovPoincar´epseudo-differential operator, is employed for the asymptotic study of boundary value problem with respect to the size of singular domain perturbation. The method is based on the observation that the known expansion of the energy functional in the ring coincides with the expansion of the Steklov-Poincar´e operator on the boundary of the truncated domain with respekt to the small parameter, which measures the size of perturbation. In this way, the singular perturbation of the domain is reduced to the regular perturbation of the Steklov-Poincar´e map ping for the ring. The topological derivative for a tracking type shape functional is evaluated so as to obtain the useful formula for application in the numerical methods of shape and topology optimization.

In 1990 Becke and Edgecombe proposed a description of electron localisation in atomic and molecular systems based on the formalism of the second-order reduced density matrices in the form of Electron Localisation Function, ELF. In 1994 Silvi and Savin, of Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, presented how to describe local electronic structure of chemical bonds and how to classify them based on topological analysis of ELF, thereby used the methodology developed in 1970s by Bader to study the topology of molecular electron density. In 2003 Popelier formulated a capacious methodology: „Quantum Chemical Topology”, which groups under one umbrella all methods of computational quantum chemistry using concepts such as: attractor, basin of attractor, gradient vector field, gradient path, and in 2010 a conference was held, entitled: „Twenty Years ELF” referring to the 20 year period of reserach using the topological analysis of ELF. The author, since 1994 working – in collaboration with Prof. Silvi – on the application of the topological analysis of ELF for elucidation of electronic structure of molecules and mechanism of chemical reactions, discusses the methodology of research and presents example of the results concerning the nature of chemical bonding in molecular systems.

Przedstawiono alternatywne spojrzenie na kompozycję przestrzeni architektonicznej. Przeciwstawiono strukturę fizyczną (konstrukcję budynku, obrazowaną rysunkami dokumentacji budowlanej) strukturze funkcjonalnej (użytkowaniu, obrazowanemu grafami). Grafy dualne rzutów kondygnacji są wyabstrahowanym zapisem struktury funkcji, a także informacją o strukturze przestrzeni architektonicznej (March & Steadman 1974). Badaniu poddano rzuty obiektów typu: wolnostojący dom mieszkalny, który zajmuje znaczącą pozycję w twórczości Józefa Gałęzowskiego (1877–1963), prominentnego przedstawiciela krakowskiej architektury. Gałęzowski zaprojektował 40 takich obiektów, z czego ponad 20 zostało zrealizowanych. W artykule wybrane z nich poddano analizie.
The article presents an alternative approach to the composition of architectural space. Physical structure (building’s construction depicted by conventional drawings) has been contrasted with its functional structure (usage depicted by graphs). Dual graphs of the floor plans serve to abstract the functional structure of a house (March & Steadman 1974). Manors and other detached houses are an important position in the work of Józef Gałęzowski (1866–1963), a prominent representative of the Cracow school of architecture. Gałęzowski designed 40 such buildings, 20 of which were built. Floor plans of chosen houses designed by him are analysed in this paper.

As the origin of the Tifinagh script remains uncertain, this work aims at exploring its probable relatedness with the Phoenician script. Using tools from within topological data analysis and graph theory, the similarity between the two scripts is studied. The clustering of their letter shapes is performed based on the pairwise distances between their topological signatures. The ideas presented in this work can be extended to study the similarity between any two writing systems and as such can serve as the first step for linguists to determine the possibly related scripts before conducting further analysis.

The subjects of the study presented in this article are production process phenomena occurring in the world of analyses, referred to as the stability and quality map in the Toyota systems – the analysis of the map in terms of the resource of result points belonging to the rings of surroundings – creation of the rings using circular surroundings of a technically selected centre by using different types of topological metrics – analysis of the coefficient of variation in respect of the percentage distribution of the belonging of result points – an attempt to interpret the practicality of the result. Epitome of computer support in respect of the same processes and computer aided statistical calculations, generating decisions.
Przedmiotem przedstawionych w artykule badań są zjawiska procesów produkcyjnych zachodzących w świecie analiz, określane mapą stabilności i jakości w systemach Toyoty - analiza mapy w kategoriach zasobu punktów wyników należących do pierścieni otoczenia - tworzenie pierścieni z wykorzystaniem kolistych otoczeń (środowisk) technicznie wyselekcjonowanego centrum za pomocą różnych rodzajów wskaźników topologicznych - analiza współczynnika zmienności w odniesieniu do rozkładu procentowego przynależności punktów wynikowych - próba interpretacji praktyczności wyniku. Typowy przykład komputerowego wsparcia, w odniesieniu do samych procesów i komputerowego wspomagania obliczeń statystycznych, generujących decyzje.

The level set method is used for shape optimization of the energy functional for the Signorini problem. The boundary variations technique is used in order to derive the shape gradients of the energy functional. The conical differentiability of solutions with respect to the boundary variations is exploited. The topology modifications during the optimization process are identified by means of an asymptotic analysis. The topological derivatives of the energy shape functional are employed for the topology variations in the form of small holes. The derivation of topological derivatives is performed within the framework proposed in (Sokołowski and Żochowski, 2003). Numerical results confirm that the method is efficient and gives better results compared with the classical shape optimization techniques.

This study concerns the application of the Topological-Shape Sensitivity Method as a systematic procedure to determine the Topological Derivative for linear elastic plate bending problems within the framework of Kirchhoff's kinematic approach. This method, based on classical Shape Sensitivity Analysis, leads to a constructive procedure to obtain the Topological Derivative. Utilising the well known terminology of structural optimization, we adopt, the total potential strain energy as the cost function and the equilibrium equation as the constraint. Variational formulation as well as the direct differentiation method are used to perform the shape derivative of the cost function. Finally, in order to obtain a uniform distribution of bending moments in several plate problems, the Topological Derivative was approximated, by the Finite Element Method, and used to find the best place to insert holes. A simple hard-kill like topology algorithm, which furnishes satisfactory qualitative results in agreement with those reported in the literature, is also shown.

The form of topological derivatives for an integral shape functional is derived for a class of semilinear elliptic equations. The convergence of finite element approximation for the topological derivatives is shown and the error estimates in the L [...] norm are obtained. The results of numerical experiments which confirm the theoretical convergence rate are presented.

The energy functional for an elliptic boundary value problem in two spatial dimensions is considered. The variations of shape functional resulting from the small shape-topological domain perturbations with the holes and inclusions in elastic body are determined. The exact representation of solutions to the boundary value problem is exploited for the purposes of asymptotic analysis. To this end the perturbed solutions of the boundary value problem are Expressem as the minimizers of perturbed energy functionals. The proposed method of asymptotic analysis results in the double asymptotic expansions, with respect to the size of a hole and to the contrast parameter of an inclusion with respect to the matrix, of solutions to the boundary value problems as well as of the associated energy functional. The shape sensitivity analysis of the energy functional with respekt of the boundary variations of an inclusion is performed. The further asymptotic analysis allows for the limit passage with the size of inclusion to zero. In this way the topological derivative of the energy functional is obtained. The proposed analysis can be used in the shape and topology optimum design for elastic bodies governed by the stationary as well as by the time dependent elasticity boundary value problems in the framework of selfadjoint extensions of elliptic operators.

The structure of transportation networks has been the subject of analysis for many years, due to the important role that it plays in assessing the efficiency of transportation systems. One of the most common approaches to representing this structure is to use graph theory, in which elements of transportation infrastructure are depicted by a set of vertices and edges. An approach based on graph theory allows us to assess the structure of a transportation network in terms of connectivity, accessibility, density or complexity. In the paper, different transportation network structures are assessed and compared, based on graph measures.

Paper presents the problem of modelling and analysis of metalworking processes. Technological processes were considered as a geometrical, physical and thermal boundary and initial value problem, with unknown boundary conditions in the contact zone. An incremental model of the contact problem between movable rigid or thermo-elastic body (tool) and thermo-elastic/thermo-visco-plastic-phases body (object) in updated Lagrange formulation, for spatial states (3D) was considered. The incremental functional of the total energy and variational, non-linear equation of motion of object and heat transfer on the typical step time were derived. This equation has been discretized by finite element method, and the system of discrete equations of motion and heat transfer of objects were received. For solution of these equations the explicit or implicit methods was used. The applications were developed in the ANSYS/LS-Dyna system, which makes possible a complex time analysis of the states of displacements, strains and stresses, in the workpieces in fabrication processes. Application of this method was showed for examples the modelling and the analysis of burnishing rolling, thread rolling and turning processes. The numerical result were verified experimentally. The topic of topological optimization of car parts is also presented.
W artykule przedstawiono problematykę modelowania i analizy numerycznej procesów technologicznych obróbki części samochodowych. Proces te rozpatrzono jako geometrycznie, fizycznie i cieplnie nieliniowe zagadnienie brzegowo-początkowe, z nieznanymi warunkami brzegowymi w obszarze kontaktu. Do opisu zjawisk nieliniowych, na typowym kroku przyrostowym, wykorzystano uaktualniony opis Lagrange'a, traktując narzędzie jako ciało sztywne lub termo-sprężyste natomiast przedmiot jako ciało termo-sprężyste/termo-lepko-plastyczne-fazowe. Równania ruchu obiektu i ciepła wyprowadzono wykorzystując rachunek wariacyjny. Otrzymane równania wariacyjne dyskretyzowano stosując aproksymację właściwą metodzie elementu skończonego. Dyskretne równania rozwiązano stosując jawne metody całkowania. Opracowano aplikacje w systemie ANSYS/LS-Dyna, które pozwalają na kompleksową analizę stanów przemieszczeń, odkształceń, naprężeń w dowolnym miejscu ciała i w dowolnej chwili realizacji procesu obróbki. Przedstawiono przykładowe wyniki obliczeń numerycznych stanów naprężeń i odkształceń wybranych procesów technologicznych: nagniatania, walcowania gwintów i toczenia. Wyniki obliczeń numerycznych weryfikowano eksperymentalnie. Przedstawiono również problematykę optymalizacji topologicznej części samochodowych.

Opis:
The paper presents an approach to detecting dependence of a decision-maker's actions (or decisions) on conditions with respect to a certain type of fuzzy rules, namely gradual rules. Gradual rules are of the form "the more c is C, the more d is D", where C and D are L-fuzzy sets on the domain of the attributes c and d with membership values possibly in different lattices, respectively. The decision-maker's actions and conditions for those are found in a data base-like system, called an information system. We use the information system to define relations corresponding to L-fuzzy sets, and we define weakening modifiers by these relations. These modifiers are closure operators in the corresponding topologies, and we can define fineness relation between L-fuzzy sets. This relation is useful when comparing different decision-maker's actions. We define strong degree and topological degree of depedence of the attributes (with respect to a gradual rule), and we study some properties of those. Finally, we present a small application.

Opis:
The effect of three types of topological defects, single vacancy, double vacancy and the Stone-Thrower-Wales defect on the atomic arrangement in a single graphitic layer is studied using computer simulations. The topological defects were positioned on the perfect hexagonal graphitic layer 20 Å in diameter with different distance from the layer edge and then the geometry of the system was independently optimized using the reactive bond order potential, the semi-empirical quantum-chemical PM7 and the density functional theory method. Curvature and the distortion of the graphitic layer caused by the defects are analyzed and their influence on the pair correlation function is discussed.

Opis:
The subject of the consideration contained in the article is topological logic interpreted as place logic and its possible applications in a logical analysis of legal reasoning. The first part of the article is about significance of widely understood spatial element in a law and about a role of formal logic in legal sciences (especially in dogmatic of law) and in legal discourse. There are also given conditions imposed on logical systems which can be applied to analyse legal reasoning. In the second part there is characterization of topological logic interpreted as place logic. In the third part there are examples of formalization of sentences of legal language and of legal inferences using symbols occurring in place logic. In the article there is shown that such kind of logic can be applied to logical analysis some reasoning conducted in legal language, specifically such reasoning in which there appear sentences including, in an explicit or a hidden way, phrase “in place”, that is, information about that, where certain events are realized.

Opis:
A framework for descent algorithms using shape as well as topological sensitivity information is introduced. The concept of gradient-related descent velocities in shape optimization is defined, a corresponding algorithmic approach is developed, and a convergence analysis is provided. It is shown that for a particular choice of the bilinear form involved in the definition of gradient-related directions a shape Newton method can be obtain. The level set methodology is used for representing and updating the geometry during the iterations. In order to include topological changes in addition to merging and splitting of existing geometries, a descent algorithm based on topological sensitivity is proposed. The overall method utilizes the shape sensitivity and topological sensitivity based methods in a serial fashion. Finally, numerical results are presented.

Opis:
The study objects were Aldrovanda vesiculosa L., an endangered species and fifty five water sites in Poland. The aim of the present work was to test the Self-Organizing Feature Map in order to examine and predict water properties and type of trophicity for restoration of the rare plant. Descriptive statistical parameters have been calculated, analysis of variance and cluster analysis were carried out and SOFM model has been constructed for analysed sites. The results of SOFM model and cluster analysis were compared. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological map of sites are similar in relation to dendrogram of cluster analysis, but not identical. The constructed SOFM model is related with significantly different contents of chemical water properties and type of trophicity. It appeared that sites with A. vesiculosa are predominantly distrophic and eutrophic waters shifted to distrophicity. The elevated model showed the sites with chemical properties favourable for restoration the species. Determined was the range of ecological tolerance of the species in relation to habitat conditions as stenotopic or relatively stenotopic in respect of the earlier accepted eutrophic status. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties constituting a validation of the SOFM method in this type of studies.
