Opis:: The paper presents results of experimental study on the possibility of calculating the content of diesel oil in soils from measurements of dielectric permittivity with the TDR technique in a soil-water-air-diesel oil system. Results of calculation were compared with the actual content of diesel oil measured in laboratory conditions. The comparison shows that the content of diesel oil in soils may be precisely determined pn the basid of measurements of dielectric permittivity in contaminated soils.

Opis:: Naziemne pomiary wilgotności gleby są niezbędne do kalibracji i weryfikacji modeli wyznaczania wilgotności wierzchniej warstwy gleby za pomocą zdjęć satelitarnych. Analiza długoterminowej zmienności czasowo-przestrzennej wilgotności gleby może bowiem ujawnić trendy w obiegu wody, związane ze zmianami klimatu i zmianami pokrycia terenu roślinnością. Stacje monitoringu wilgotności gleby są nadal nieliczne, a istniejące systemy nie są ujednolicone pod względem technik pomiarowych, formatu danych, dostępu, itp. Nowo powstała instytucja o nazwie International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) ma służyć jako scentralizowana baza danych, dostępnych użytkownikom oraz jako próba standaryzacji informacji, odnoszących się do wilgotności gleby. Za pomocą przeglądarki internetowej zapewnia ona globalny dostęp do wyników pomiaru wilgotności gleby z istniejących stacji pomiarowych i pomiarów walidacyjnych w formie znormalizowanych i zharmonizowanych zbiorów danych. Obecnie ISMN zawiera dane z 16 sieci i ponad 500 stacji zlokalizowanych w Ameryce Północnej, Europie, Azji i Australii, w tym 6 stacji pomiarowych, należących do Instytutu Agrofizyki PAN (IA PAN) w Lublinie. Baza danych ciągle jest poszerzana, zarówno w odniesieniu do liczby stacji pomiarowych, jak i okresów pomiaru. Wkrótce ISMN stanie się ważnym źródłem informacji do weryfikacji modeli klimatycznych i zwiększenia dokładności satelitarnych pomiarów wilgotności gleby. Praca przedstawia podstawowe elementy systemu ISMN oraz sieci monitoringu wilgotności gleby, opracowanej i wdrożonej przez IA PAN w Lublinie oraz działającej również na poletkach doświadczalnych Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczego we Wrocławiu. Użytkownicy systemu z IA PAN mogą udostępniać swoje dane w ramach sieci ISMN oraz korzystać z dostępnych danych na zasadzie dobrowolności i bez ponoszenia żadnych kosztów.
Ground measurements of soil moisture are invaluable for calibration and verification of models determining the surface soil moisture from satellite images. Furthermore, the analysis of long-term time-spatial variation of soil moisture can reveal trends in the water cycle related to climate change and changes in land cover vegetation. Soil moisture monitoring stations are still scarce, and the existing systems are not standardized in terms of measurement techniques, data format, access, etc. The newly formed organization called the International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) has to serve as a centralized database available to users as well as an attempt to standardize information relating to soil moisture. It provides global access using a web browser to soil moisture data from the existing stations and validation campaigns in the form of standardized and harmonized data sets available to users. ISMN currently contains data from 16 networks and more than 500 stations located throughout North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, including six stations that belong to the IA PAS in Lublin. The database is still growing, both in terms of the number of stations and measurement periods. In the near future ISMN will be an increasingly important source of information to verify and improve the accuracy of satellite measurements of soil moisture. The paper presents the basic elements of the ISMN system and soil moisture monitoring network developed, implemented by the IA PAS in Lublin and operating also on experimental plots at the University of Life Sciences in Wroclaw. Users of the system from IA PAS can share their data in the ISMN voluntarily and at no cost.

Opis:: The objective of this paper is to present a method for determining diurnal distribution of the intensity of effective non rainfall water flux. It was found that the application of TDR technique for the determination of diurnal dynamics of effective non rainfall water flux requires temperature correction of sensed volumetric moisture contents. Without temperature correction the error of estimated non rainfall water flux can be as much as 26%. In addition, the effect of temperature changes on the soil surface was determined in 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours periods. It was found that the intensity of effective non rainfall water flux was determined to the greatest extent by the rate of temperature drop during the period of 3 h preceding the non rainfall water flux determination. The agreement of non rainfall water flux calculated with the method proposed and that obtained by the collector was better for dew than for hoarfrost periods.

Opis:: Specjalnie zaprojektowana sonda pomiarowa aparatu TDR, przeznaczonego do pomiaru wilgotności w glebach, pozwala na otrzymanie refie kio gram u charaktery stycznego dla efektu studni impedancji oraz stwarza możliwość przeprowadzenia procesu automatycznej kalibracji aparatu pomiarowego. W pracy dokonano oszacowania przydatności kilku wybranych układów prętów równoległych do konstrukcji sondy generującej sygnał odbiciowy, charakterystyczny dla efektu studni impedaneji. Dokonano optymalnego wyboru układu geometrycznego prętów sondy dla przypadku elementów rozwartych i zwartych. Dla każdego z omawianych przypadków stwierdzono fakt automatycznego tworzenia się wzorcowej linii transmisyjnej, niezbędnej do przeprowadzenia procesu kalibracji. Słowa kluczowe: wilgotność, TDR, efekt studni impedancji. W obu przypadkach, długość kabli wzorcowych, 25R i 95R, może być wyznaczona z formuły (4).
Specially project probe of the TDR apparatus, destined to measuremnt of moisture in soils allows on receiving a special kind of reflectogram with effect of the impendance well and creates a possibility of automatic calibration of the TDR apparatus. The change of geometrical dimensions of probe rods or the change them quantities allows on fixing of the sensor impredance. The estimate of usefulness of selected sets of the parallel rods to construction of probe was made. The optimized set of the geometrical rods with connected and gaping rods was found For every discussed cases was ascertained fact of automatic creations of patterns, indispensable for execution of the calibrating process.

Opis:: The paper presents the results of an investigation which took place over the years 2008-2012 in the Shatsk National Natural Park. For the investigation four genetically different soils in that area were selected. Those were a soddy-podzolic soil (S01) under grass vegetation, lowland peat bog (S02), anthropogenic lowland peat bog (S03) with mineralised upper layer and a soddygley loamy soil (S04). The TDR device developed and created in the Institute of Agrophysics PAS in Lublin, and probes for measurement soil moisture, temperature and salinity were used in the study. The eight probes of the TDR-measuring system were installed at different depths, from 10 to 80 cm, at 10 cm intervals, for soils S02, S03 and S04, and at the depths of 10 сm and 50 cm for soil S01. The dynamics of soil temperature and soil moisture at different depths and the speed of response to changes in subsequent uncured layers are presented. Hourly TDR data have been diurnalaveraged and used for the calculation of correlation coefficients between soil temperature at different depths, air temperature, precipitation, solar activity parameter, Wolf number and total solar radiation. The study included also the effect of changes in solar radiation in the soil with the seasons.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań prowadzonych w latach 2008-2012 na terytorium Szackiego Parku Narodowego. Do badań wybrane zostały cztery genetycznie różne gleby na tym terenie. Są to gleby soddy – podzolic (S01) porośnieta trawą, lowland peat bog (S02), anthropogenic lowland peat bog (S03) ze zmineralizowaną warstwą powierzchniową i soddy – gley loamy soil (S04). Badania zostały przeprowadzone przy użyciu urządzenia TDR opracowanego i wykonanego w Instytucie Agrofizyki PAN w Lublinie oraz sond polowych do pomiaru wilgotności gleby, temperatury oraz zasolenia. Praca przedstawia zmienność właściwości fizycznych gleby w czasie w różnych typach gleby i na różnych głębokościach. Osiem sond TDR zostało zainstalowane w glebach S02, S03, S04 na głębokości od 10 cm do 80 cm w odstępach 10cm oraz w glebie S01 na głębokości od 10 cm do 50 cm. Dane dobowe z pomiarów TDR zostały uśrednione i wykorzystane do wyznaczenia współczynników korelacji między temperaturą gleby na różnych głębokościach a temperaturą powietrza, opadami atmosferycznymi, parametrami aktywności słonecznej, liczbą Wolfa i całkowitym promieniowaniem słonecznym. Zbadany został również wpływ promieniowania słonecznego na zmiany badanych parametrów w glebie wraz z porami roku.

Opis:: Odpowiednio zaprojektowana sonda aparatu TDR, przeznaczonego do pomiaru wilgotności w glebach, pozwala na otrzymanie reflektogramu charakterystycznego dla efektu studni impe dancji. Elementy wyróżnione takiego reflektogramu sugerują konstrukcję prostego detektora czasu propagacji impulsu testującego w obszarze czujnikowym sondy. Detektor umożliwia uzyskanie wyniku pomiaru w trybie natychmiastowym i bez obecności układu mikroprocesora. Modyfikacja linii transmisyjnej, polegająca na wprowadzeniu do niej dodatkowej nieciągłości impedancji, umożliwia zastosowanie omawianego detektora do przeprowadzenia procesu kalibracji przyrządu pomiarowego TDR,
Properly projected probe of the TDR apparatus, destined to measurement of moisture in soils, allows to receiving of reflectogram characteristic for effect of the impredance well. A characteristic features of the received reflectogram suggest a construction of the simple detector which estimate propagation time of the testing pulse in area of the probe. The detector makes possible to receive a result of measurement in instanta neous moge without a microporocessor. The modification of the tranmission line, relying on introducing of additional nonlinearly of impredance allows to apply of this same detector for calibration process of the TDR apparatus

Opis:: W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono metodę wyznaczania strefy czułości sensorów stosowanych do pomiaru wilgotności objętościowej w ośrodkach porowatych. Analizom poddano czujniki wykorzystujące reflektometrię domenowo czasową (TDR), wyprodukowane w Instytucie Agrofizyki Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Lublinie. Na podstawie przeprowadzonych badań laboratoryjnych stwierdzono, że zasięg strefy czułości sensorów typu laboratoryjnego i polowego jest zależny od zawartości wody w ośrodku, w którym prowadzone są pomiary. W przypadku czujnika laboratoryjnego (LP/ms), gdy oznaczenia prowadzone są w glebie całkowicie suchej, strefę czułości stanowi objętość prostopadłościanu o wymiarach 0,6 cm i 5,8 cm i grubości równej średnicy prętów sondy LP. Natomiast gdy gleba jest nasycona to strefę czułości stanowi walec eliptyczny o wysokości 5,5 cm i promieniach 0,5 cm i 0,8 cm. W przypadku czujnika polowego (FP/mts), gdy pomiary prowadzone są w glebie całkowicie suchej, strefę czułości stanowi walec eliptyczny o wysokości 10,2 cm i promieniach 0,3 cm i 0,4 cm. Natomiast gdy gleba jest nasycona wodą walec o wysokości 11,2 cm i podstawie koła o promieniu 1,7 cm.
The paper presents a method for the determination of the zone of sensitivity of probes used for the measurement of volumetric moisture in porous media. The probes under analysis were TDR (Time-Domain Reflectometry) probes manufactured at the Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Lublin. Based on the laboratory studies performed it was found that the extent of the sensitivity zone of the field- and laboratory-type probes depends on the water content of the medium in which measurements are conducted. In the case of the laboratory probe (LP/ms), when the measurements are conducted in a completely dry soil, the zone of sensitivity of the probe is the volume of a cuboid with dimensions of 0.6 cm by 5.8 cm and a thickness equal to the diameter of the rods of the LP probe. Whereas, when the soil is saturated with water the zone of sensitivity of the probe is an elliptical cylinder with height of 5.5 cm and radii of 0.5 cm and 0.8 cm. In the case of the field probe (FP/mts), when the measurements are conducted in a completely dry soil, the probe sensitivity zone is an elliptical cylinder with height of 10.2 cm and radii of 0.3 cm and 0.4 cm. Whereas, when the soil is saturated with water that zone is a cylinder with height of 11.2 cm and a circular base with a radius of 1.7 cm.

Opis:: The article presents the description of measurement methodology of moisture transport in unsaturated porous materials using Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique on the example of measurement of capillary uptake phenomenon in the sample of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). In the paper there are presented basic principles of the TDR method as a technique applied in metrology, its potential for measurement of moisture in porous materials like soils and porous building materials. Second part of the article presents the experiment of capillary rise process in the sample of AAC. Within the experiment moisture content was monitored in the sample exposed on water influence. Monitoring was conducted using TDR FP/mts probes. Preparation of the measuring setup was presented in detail. The TDR readouts post-processing, graphical presentations of the obtained results, short discussion and comparison of TDR readouts to gravimetric measurement were also presented.
W artykule przedstawiono opis metodyki pomiaru transportu wilgoci w nienasyconych porowatych materiałach przy wykorzystaniu techniki Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) na przykładzie pomiarów zjawiska podciągania kapilarnego przez próbkę autoklawizowanego betonu komórkowego. Zaprezentowano podstawowe informacje na temat metody TDR jako techniki stosowanej w metrologii. Omówiono jej potencjał do pomiarów wilgoci w takich ośrodkach porowatych, jak gleby i porowate materiały budowlane. Druga część artykułu przedstawia eksperyment podciągania kapilarnego przez próbkę autoklawizowanego betonu komórkowego. W trakcie trwania eksperymentu monitorowano zmiany wilgotności w próbce wystawionej na oddziaływaniewody. Monitoring realizowano za pomocą sond TDR FP/mts. Rozdział „Materials and Methods” przedstawia szczegółowo przygotowanie stanowiska pomiarowego. W rozdziale „Results” podano odczyty miernika TDR przeliczone na wilgotność oraz zaprezentowano uzyskane wyniki w postaci graficznej. Zawarto w nim również krótką dyskusję wyników i porównanie odczytów TDR z pomiarami grawimetrycznymi.

Opis:: We report on a multichannel sensor for multipoint corrosion monitoring of an aluminum film, which was corroded by nitric acid as a corrosive solution. The sensor head was a commercial 1x4 optical fiber coupler combined with the optical time domain reflectometry technique. The effects of the concentration and pH of acid on the corrosion rate of the aluminum film are initially studied and characterized. Then, about 100 nm of pure aluminum is coated on the end facets of each fiber channel and reduction of the back reflected signals is simultaneously monitored as a measure of corrosion rate. It is found that the fabricated sensor is very sensitive to the variation of pH as by increasing of the pH up to similar to 13, the corrosion rate of aluminum is raised to similar to 75 millimeter per year. Our experimental results have been verified by the standard immersion test, indicating very good consistency and reliability. Eventually, the sensor is used to trace the corrosion of sea water provided from the Persian Gulf, confirming the validity of laboratory results.

Opis:: Minimally invasive intraoperative imaging plays a crucial role in delicate microsurgeries for precise operation monitoring in which fiber optic imaging can be considered as an endoscopy and surgical proximity guidance tool due to its compactness. This paper presents a near-infrared time-domain reflectometric common-path optical coherence tomography imaging technique using a bare-fiber probe mounted directly on a scanning galvanometer. The common-path setup allows the use of a freely adjustable optical path length and a disposable fiber probe, as well as eliminating the need for an additional dedicated reference optical path. Experimental results demonstrate clear discrimination between the brain tumor tissue and the normal tissue for mouse brains with the images acquired in real-time over a wide area. The proposed method enables real-time and in situ visualization of tumor resection for intraoperative imaging, and this study demonstrates the feasibility of its application to microsurgical interventions.
