Opis:
An adaptive iterative receiver for layered space-time coded (LSTC) systems is proposed. The proposed receiver, based on a joint adaptive iterative detection and decoding algorithm, adaptively suppresses and cancels co-channel interference. The LMS algorithm and maximum a posteriori (MAP) algorithm are utilized in the receiver structure. A partially filtered gradient LMS (PFGLMS) algorithm is also applied to improve the convergence speed and tracking ability of the adaptive detector with a slight increase in complexity. The proposed receiver is analysed in a slow and fast Rayleigh fading channels in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems.

In this review we focus our attention on supervised learning methods for spike time coding in Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs). This study is motivated by recent experimental results regarding information coding in biological neural systems, which suggest that precise timing of individual spikes may be essential for efficient computation in the brain. We are concerned with the fundamental question: What paradigms of neural temporal coding can be implemented with the recent learning methods? In order to answer this question, we discuss various approaches to the learning task considered. We shortly describe the particular learning algorithms and report the results of experiments. Finally, we discuss the properties, assumptions and limitations of each method. We complete this review with a comprehensive list of pointers to the literature.

Opis:
In this paper, we derive an analytical expression for the exact pairwise error probability (PEP) of a space-time coded system operating over a spatially correlated slow fading channel using a moment-generating function-based approach. This analytical PEP expression is more realistic than previously published exact-PEP expressions as it fully accounts for antenna spacing, antenna geometries (uniform linear array, uniform grid array, uniform circular array, etc.) and scattering models (uniform, Gaussian, Laplacian, Von-Mises, etc.). Inclusion of spatial information provides valuable insights into the physical factors determining the performance of a space-time code. We demonstrate the strength of our new analytical PEP expression by evaluating the performance of two space-time trellis codes proposed in the literature for different spatial scenarios.

Opis:
The paper presents a novel implementation of a time-to-digital converter (TDC) in field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices. The design employs FPGA digital signal processing (DSP) blocks and gives more than two-fold improvement in mean resolution in comparison with the common conversion method (carry chain-based time coding line). Two TDCs are presented and tested depending on DSP configuration. The converters were implemented in a Kintex-7 FPGA device manufactured by Xilinx in 28 nm CMOS process. The tests performed show possibilities to obtain mean resolution of 4.2 ps but measurement precision is limited to at most 15 ps mainly due to high conversion nonlinearities. The presented solution saves FPGA programmable logic blocks and has an advantage of a wider operation range when compared with a carry chain-based time coding line.

In the paper, results of experimental research on wavelet video codec are presented. The author has put emphasis on the optimal selection of the coder parameters to optimize the coding time. The author has used six test sequences (Basket, City, Crew, Harbour, Ice and Soccer in 352x288, 30 fps) for the experiments. The sequences used in the research are commonly used to assess the effectiveness of video sequence compression. The measurement of the image quality is based on the PSNR. The results of optimal selection of wavelet video codec parameters due to the coding time are presented. The main goal of the paper is to show the coder parameters that provide the best values of the PSNR for a reduced coding time.

Alamouti encoding is a well-known space time block encoding technique used to improve the received signal quality in Rayleigh fading channels. In aeronautical telemetry, this encoding technique is applied to shaped offset quadrature phase shift keying tier generation (SOQPSK-TG) modulation in order to handle the two-antenna issue. It is provided for in telemetry-related IRIG standards. In this paper, we propose a unique decoding architecture for Alamouti-encoded SOQPSK-TG signals, taking advantage of pulse amplitude modulation decomposition with soft and hard outputs. We exploit this result to obtain a Viterbi algorithm (VA) for hard decoding and a soft output Viterbi algorithm (SOVA) for soft and hard decoding, with a twofold benefit: operation using one trellis structure, unlike decoders that are based on the 8-waveforms cross-correlated trellis-coded quadrature modulation (XTCQM) approximation, and very attractive bit error rate performance, as well as a complexity trade-off.

Opis:
This paper presents a method of limiting the effect of ambient temperature drift on the measurement uncertainty of a time counter (TC). A change in ambient temperature causes a change in the TC transfer function, i.e. the widths of quantization steps to be exact. Recalibration is a procedure that is then required, but it disturbs the measurement process. However, with the knowledge of the current ambient temperature and having the set of transfer functions identified at different temperatures, it is possible to determine and use the most adequate transfer function and virtually eliminate the temperature impact. For this purpose, three interpolation methods were studied: the nearest neighbor method, linear and polynomial interpolations. A newly evaluated transfer functions were tested in interpolating TC to select the best interpolation method.

This paper presents the diagnostic and control software of a time interval counter with multi-edge coding in independent coding lines, implemented in the Spartan-6 FPGA device manufactured by Xilinx. The method of time-to-digital conversion [1] is presented along with the design of the time interval counter (Fig. 1). Subsequently, the main goals of the control software, along with its logical structure, are described. The paper shows the layer model (Fig. 2) of the program, reveals the method of communication with the time counter and the way of decoding measurement frames. The bottom-most communication layer transfers the data through USB to the device. The next control layer operates on hardware registers and the measurement layer calibrates the counter and triggers measurements. Finally, the graphic user interface (GUI) layer binds the application together and steers the user interface. The program operates in two main modes: calibration and time interval measurement. Apart from both these modes, the data flow across the layers and the way of saving data generated during counter operation are described. The GUI (Fig. 3) is described as well, showing the main types of operation along with the capabilities of configuring the calibration and measurement processes. Finally, the paper presents the test results of the time counter in both main operation modes (Fig. 4).

W artykule opisane są projekt i wyniki badań przetwornika czas-liczba o rozdzielczości 5,3 ps (1 LSB) i zakresie pomiarowym 428 ps. Do przetwarzania czasowo-cyfrowego użyta została metoda kodowania wielokrotnego. Metoda ta umożliwia pokonanie ograniczeń technologicznych współczesnych układów scalonych i uzyskanie wartości rozdzielczości mniejszej niż czas propagacji pojedynczej komórki linii kodującej. Przetwornik został zrealizowany w układzie programowalnym Spartan-6 firmy Xilinx.
This paper presents the implementation and tests results of a time-to-digital converter based on the wave union method and implemented in Spartan-6 FPGA (Xilinx). The converter has the resolution of 5,3 ps (1 LSB) in the measurement range of 428 ps and the integral nonlinearity of 3,8 LSB (Fig. 7). In the wave union method, contrary to the typical conversion methods with a single coding, the resolution is lower than the FPGA cell delay thanks to coding several transitions of the time event signal (Fig. 2). In addition, the linearity of conversion is increased by reducing the width of wide bins. Although, using a multi-transition pattern gives better performance, it also brings more problems to be solved. The main problems such as implementation of a pattern generator for certain amount of transitions, minimal delays between transitions and elimination of bubble errors are discussed in this paper. The pattern generator (Fig. 3) is implemented with use of a carry chain. It enables controlling the pattern by means of diagnostic and measurement software. Bubble errors (Fig. 4) are eliminated with a fast asynchronous encoder (Fig. 5). The diagnostic-control software (Fig. 6) allows to configure the pattern generator, launch the measurement session and generate a text file with all information needed to calculate conversion characteristics of the time-to-digital converter.

Doppler-RAKE detection in the CDMA system has been further developed and offers better performances in comparison to conventional RAKE detection, especially in fast-fading environments. Also, the multi-user Doppler-RAKE system works more effectively with channel coding applications. However, by means of exploring the Doppler effect, the system's data rate is decreased. We propose a simple solution to increase the data rate for the system while keeping the Doppler gain.
