Opis:: W artykule przedstawiona została, na materiale twórczości Michaiła Arcybaszewa, kwestia idei nietzscheańskich w Rosji początku XX wieku. Sygnalizując zbieżność, ale nie tożsamość, idei powieści Arcybaszewa Śmierć Landego (1904) i Sanin (1907) z koncepcją niemieckiego filozofa, autorka akcentuje specyfikę poglądów pisarza rosyjskiego: jego indywidualistyczną „filozofię życia”, związaną z naturą, pierwiastek optymistyczny, na przekór powszechnej hegemonii pesymizmu, hasła człowieka harmonijnego, zmierzającego do radości życia i swobodnej miłości. Nietzscheanizm był więc znany w Rosji tego czasu, jednak w świadomości artystycznej łączy się z czysto rosyjskimi doświadczeniami: teoriami Tołstoja, Dostojewskiego, Turgieniewa i nihilistycznej inteligencji raznoczyńskiej. Analizując sekret niezwykłego rozgłosu powieści Sanin, badaczka dostrzega go nie w warstwie śmiałych opisów, lecz w obrazie stworzonego przez Arcybaszewa „człowieka naturalnego” XX wieku, bohatera adogmatycznego. W artykule podejmuje się ponadto problem popularności tego bohatera i jego filozofii życiowej w masowym odbiorze czytelniczym początku wieku, czego przykładem mogą być liczne kontynuacje utworu, amatorskie przedłużenia (nieraz ironizujące) jego losów.

Opis:: The article analyzes the letters by Hryhoriy Skovoroda, which are a striking example of the epistolary genre of his time. These texts show the development of Skovoroda’s philosophy in the sphere of everyday life practices. These works were the first to announce and develop the important moral and ethical categories of his science, formulating and testing the leading concepts of Skovoroda’s philosophical system. It’s possible to trace the peculiarities of Hryhoriy Skovoroda’s temperament through his epistolary. This method creates the effect of the living presence of the author, because of the researched philosopher’s letters. The analysis of his letters to friends of different stages of the philosopher’s life testifies to the openness and immutability of his existential principles. The style of Skovoroda’s epistolary has not undergone significant changes for several decades. It is marked by shining Baroque metaphors, wits and aphorisms, imaginary dialogue with the recipient and thinkers of different eras. They also have a noticeable tendency to combine philosophical content with a travesty form, sincerity and respect for the recipients.

Opis:: Artykuł jest poświęcony analizie rozstrzygnięcia pytania o sens ludzkiej egzystencji przez założenie bytu absolutnego. Artykuł uzasadnia tezę: jeśli cel, a zatem sens pochodzi od konkretnej sytuacji człowieka, zestaw wyników „sytuacyjnej egzystencji”, osobnych, a czasami nawet sprzecznych, nie pozwalają nam mówić o konkretnej ludzkiej egzystencji. Jeżeli dana osoba widzi sens swojego istnienia w bycie absolutnym, jego celem jest osiągnięcie pełni bytu, który jest dobrem absolutnym.
The article is devoted to analysis of the issue on meaning of human existence and its solution through statement on the absolute being. The article justifies the thesis: if the goal, and therefore the meaning derives from a concrete human situation, the set of results of “situational existence”, separate and sometimes even contradictory, do not allow us to speak about a concrete human existence. If an individual sees meaning of his existence in the absolute being, then he purposes to realize completeness of being which is the absolute good.

Opis:: Celem tego artykułu jest przedstawienie i zanalizowanie różnych sformułowań celu ostatecznego człowieka na gruncie filozofii Ayn Rand, obiektywizmu. Analizuję sformułowania stosowane przez samą Rand, zgodnie z którymi ostatecznym celem człowieka jest (i) jego własne życie, (ii) przetrwanie jako człowieka oraz (iii) jego własne szczęście. W drugiej części tekstu przyglądam się dwóm możliwym sformułowaniom celu ostatecznego człowieka z punktu widzenia filozofii obiektywistycznej, a mianowicie: cel ostateczny jako (iv) własne rozkwitanie oraz (v) szczęśliwe życie. Stawiam tezę, że wszystkie analizowane przeze mnie sformułowania – zarówno te, którymi posługuje się Rand, jak i pozostałe dwa – są ze sobą nie tylko zgodne, ale również komplementarne.
The aim of this paper is to present and analyze different formulations of human beings ultimate goal in Ayn Rand’s philosophy. I offer an analysis of Rand’s own formulations, namely that the ultimate goal is (i) one’s own life, (ii) one’s survival qua man, and (iii) one’s own happiness. The remainder of the paper is focused on two other possible formulations of the ultimate goal from an Objectivist perspective: (iv) one’s own flourishing and (v) happy life. My thesis is that all these formulations – both Rand’s and the two others – are not only compatible with each other but also complementary.

Opis:: Followers of methodological antinaturalism in philosophy, who criticise the application of methods representing the natural sciences to other realms of knowledge, argue for the necessity to separate the humanities from the empirical instrumentarium of research. The exposed dualism of investigation process reveals differences between axiomatic and deductive explanation of arguments of formal sciences and with the understanding of the humanistic interpretation and with idealizing historical and comparative analysis in the area of sciences concerning the spirit. An important contribution into historic analyses of the Geisteswissenschaften sphere came from a disciple of the Marburg Neo-Kantianism and follower of Kantian apriorism, Ernst Cassirer, and an author of the antipositivistic turn and the historical philosophy of life, Wilhelm Dilthey. Both philosophers enter into the polemics with naturalistic ideas of the man and the culture; they enter into polemic with a positivistic vision of the reality determined exclusively by physical and biological factors. In their own considerations they stress the irreducibility of the historical world to the dimension of nature. They underline the qualitative exceptionality of man as a conscious and creative (in cultural terms) individual. Taking as the point of departure the question of history, I will show dependences, collected at the perspective of the empirical (not metaphysical) ideas of the culture created by the selfconsciousness producing cultural meanings.

Opis:: The contemporary man, and perhaps especially Christian, feels himself torn in to direction. On the one hand, he wants to be a good Christian, and he is moved in the direction of worship, adoration and faith in Christ. On the other hand, he believes in man and man’s eff ort to build up the world, in human progress, in different philosophy and political conception, in human potential to build the future. Both of these directions seem good and deserving of all his eff ort, but they seem to be two diff erent directions. There is an apparent conflict between the upward impulse of faith, worship, adoration and the forward in the direction of faith only in man, faith in the liberally world, faith in human progress, faith in economy and political philosophy. This apparent conflict between man’s upward impulse toward God and his forward impulse toward progress results in a spiritual dualism. Therefore a man in our time will better know himself and reality of the progress of the world in the authentic value of our civilization too. On the way of renovation of his life in the faith’s dimension, has a man the possibility to find the motivation to live in the new light of God’s love.

Opis:: The focus of this article is on the conformity of quality of life indicators reformed by the institutions of the European Union with the concept of sustainable development. The reform was launched in 2009 under the title GDP and beyond – Measuring progress in a changing world. The issue is presented from the perspective of conclusions drawn on the basis of philosophical analysis of the problems we need to solve in order to design the indicators adopted to sustainable development concept, such as defining quality of life, needs, objective and subjective quality of life measurements, existence of universal quality of life indicators (on the example of gross domestic product). In order to describe the tools used to perform the analysis, the issue of theoretical status of sustainable development philosophy is approached.

Opis:: The term respect is frequently used in ordinary communication however it also has a significant role in philosophical discussions focused on environmental ethics. This essay deals with the ambiguity of the term respect. The author analyzes respect from a philosophical point of view claiming that several possible interpretations of what the word respect means and what standards of behavior to which it is to be related. It is pointed out that the issue of whether respect should be understood as an attitude or behavior. The author highlights the problem of constraints imposed by respect and the relation of respect to intrinsic and instrumental value. The approach is analyzed also from the point of view of Kant’s ethics, nevertheless the author examines it also from the standpoints of various contemporary environmental ethicists (e.g. Taylor, Goodpaster, Katz, Lo). However, author concludes that understanding respect as a virtue appears to be a most promising approach in contemporary environmental ethics because it can solve the problem of finding balanced interpretation of respect.

Opis:: The paper covers the symbolism of death, which seems to be largely overlooked, trivialized or narrowly read both by the public and by some authors of texts on contemporary aesthetics. Numerous artists of the 20th and 21st century, including those widely known and commented on, try to restore the theme of mortality to the culture of the West, often showing it in the form of intercultural symbols, present in art from the beginning of its documented existence. The aim of this essay is to summon some meanings of such symbols, which are in a comprehensive way traditional, but invariably attractive for contemporary artists and thus freely transformed, and to sketch the possibility of their potential existential impact. The exploration of the possible causes of these meanings has been conducted on the basis of the selected proposals of interpretation in visual anthropology and depth psychology. The symbolism of death and its alleged role in contemporary art and contemporary Western culture have been also confronted with the selected proposals of the philosophy of life.
Artykuł dotyczy symboliki śmierci, która wydaje się w dużej mierze niezauważana, banalizo-wana lub wąsko odczytywana zarówno przez współczesnych odbiorców sztuki, jak i przez estetykę współczesną. Autorka zakłada, że artyści XX i XXI wieku, również ci szeroko znani i komentowani, starają się przywrócić kulturze Zachodu tematykę skończoności życia, podając nam ją często „do widzenia” w postaci zestawień międzykulturowych symboli obecnych w sztuce od początku jej udokumentowanego istnienia. Celem pracy jest ukazanie niektórych znaczeń symboliki śmierci (nieodmiennie atrakcyjnej dla twórców, w sposób szeroko pojęty tradycyjnej, choć swobodnie współcześnie trawestowanej) oraz możliwości jej potencjalnego oddziaływania. Eksploracja możliwych przyczyn aktualności tych znaczeń przeprowadzona została w oparciu o wybrane propozycje interpretacyjne antropologii kultury wizualnej i psy-chologii głębi. Symbolika śmierci i jej domniemana rola w sztuce współczesnej i współczesnej kulturze zachodniej zostały także skonfrontowane z wybranymi propozycjami filozofii życia.

Opis:: Based on the analysis of texts by Jan Patočka, the author explores two concepts of human existence. The concept of three movements of life and the concept of two basic forms of life are examined in this paper, with the aim to referring to similarities and differences between them and to try to point out the essentials from these conceptions. The motivating question that gives rise to author´s efforts in this paper is: “What kind of agreement can be found between different concepts?”
