Opis:
Having psychological, psychiatrical, biological, anthropological, sociological and philosophical data, the author attemps to develop the structure of an individual identity, and to come up with a definition which would answer the question: who am I? Different descriptions of identity found in American authors have been presented in this article. The author takes advantage of them in order to give her own complete holistic definition of identity. She delineates four elements present in the identity of every individual: 1) genetically inherited characteristies;2) characteristies acquired through family socialization;3) characteristies acquired through re-socialization;4) self-evaluation reganding one's own status, role, potential, priorities of values, obligations, abilities, group solidarity, nationality, religion and ethnic belonging. The author regards the ethnic identity as an integral element of the individual's identity which is especially active in his or her psyche on account of emigration. The article introduces and explains among others the notion of psychical immunology. It allows to analyse the process of emigrant's acceptance or rejection of the culture of the new environment. This notion provides for a better understanding of the processes which take place in emigrant's psyche and lead to changes of his or her identity and to the development of a "third value". In her conclusion the author states that she regards ethnic identity as a special "colouring" of the emigrant's identity. She considers it also as an element which deeply infiltrates the whole psychical structure of an emigrant and the creative processes which take place in it.

Since the first years before the post-revolutionary emigration („the first wave”), the problem of the special assignment given by history appeared. Authors of the emigration literature understood its mission differently, however, they did agree on this one point: the principle of artistic freedom is the underlying reason for the emigrants’ literature. Alluding to Nina Berberowa’s wellknown formula, it is not about exile, but about the mission. Spiritual values of the „mission” of the Russian diaspora are becoming a part of the national culture in contemporary times.

Opis:
The article analyzes the problem of aiding emigrants from the Polish lands in the long period from the end of the 19th century to the contemporary post-accession migration (after joining the structures of the European Union by Poland in 2004), excluding the period of the Polish People’s Republic, when emigrating from Poland was stopped for ideological reasons. In the main part of the article the author chronologically analyzes the social and political conditionings of the emigration processes, pointing to the forms of aiding emigrants in their preparations to leaving Poland. She considers the actions taken by various state and social institutions, as well as the special role played by the Catholic Church and the clergy in the care taken of emigrants. The analyses are based on historical and sociological works, and on the sources from Polish and Ukrainian (Lvov) archives. The article shows similarities and differences in the forms and circumstances of providing care and aid to emigrants. It also draws the reader’s attention to peculiar, especially modern, forms of support given to economic migrants. In the conclusion basic arguments justifying the significance of various type of aid given to emigrants are pointed to, like: a) protection from ethnic exclusion in the target country, b) protection from the loss of cultural-ethnic identity in the face of a cultural clash or the effect of globalization processes, c) protection from abuses and exploitation of emigrants by dishonest employment agents, d) making emigrants realize the need of proper actions protecting the family, and especially the children, from the negative consequences of separation, e) the significance of social and organizational actions for emigrants who have troubles with the basic actions necessary for fulfilling the requirements connected with going abroad.

Dina Kaminskaya was a defense lawyer of Soviet dissidents and participated in the most famous political trials of the 1960s. She acted as a defense lawyer for the members of the human rights movement in the Soviet Union, the creators and disseminators of samizdat, those who organized protests and demonstrations, including the one on the Red Square in Moscow in August 1968. Leaving the USSR under the threat of arrest in 1977, in exile, she wrote a memoir, Attorney’s notes, which was published in New York by the Chronicle-Press publishing house in 1984. Not only is the Soviet political judicial system with its ideological tricks vividly represented in this book, but also the portraits of those dissidents whom she knew personally and worked for as a lawyer.

Opis:
In Poland, in the last 25 years, theologians, lawyers, sociologist and psychologists have discussed significant changes in the field of marriage and family. The political transformations caused not only economic development, but also cultural transformation and globalization of social phenomena. Among such issues there is the problem of the emigration of young polish citizens. Apart from the positive economic and cultural aspects of working abroad, some negative influence on the strength and unity of the families has been observed. In the article effort was made to examine the impact of labor migration on the reorientation of the general family in the light of matrimonial nullity processes, where the emigrant was involved as the Petitioner or the Respondent party. The author`s conclusion is that it is the last chance to create and put into practice, as soon as possible, the modern and interdisciplinary program of pastoral care directed to the families of the migrants, especially the new generation.

Opis:
Knowledge of the Poles who immigrated to the United States is relatively good. However, we know little about the assistance given to newcomers by Poles who arrived to America earlier. The Polish Immigrants' Association in California “Samopomoc” (1950-1975) was formed, among others, on Anna Górska's initiative in Los Angeles in 1950, in order to set proper conditions for Polish immigrants, mainly going to the States after World War II to settle down there. The aim of the association was also to find jobs for the newcomers, to help them learn English, to prepare them for the examination qualifying to obtain American citizenship, to help them get the licence to set up a business and pass the driving test. However, the most important task for “Samopomoc” was to defend the Polish language, to preserve the national heritage and to transmit it to the next generations; which boils down to supporting the national spirit, preserving the Polish culture, the native tongue, customs and the Catholic morality, knowledge of the history of Poland, as well as uniting the new immigrants with the whole of the Polish circles. These tasks were carried out by “Samopomoc” very well. Apart from that, owing to the Polish doctors' and lawyers' public spirit, it secured free medical and legal assistance to all the Polish immigrants. Doctor Tadeusz Mrozowski was the most active person in this respect; he even used to go to the railroad station to meet the newcomers there. All the activities of “Samopomoc” were coordinated by the Managing Board, with the help of members of the Association. Moreover, within the Board there was the Social Welfare Department in which a few people worked, one- or two-people Event Department, and outside the Managing Board – the Control Board and the Court of Arbitration. The number of members of “Samopomoc” increased from 85 in 1950 to 235 at the beginning of 1954 and to 315 in 1958. The Association did not have its own premises; it resided in a hired office. As soon as the initial period of its existence, “Samopomoc” joined the State Polish American Congress and it became a shareholder of the Polish Home of the Polish American Congress. It published a magazine entitled “Komunikaty” that was soon renamed “Samopomoc-Komunikaty”. It also had its column in the monthly “Nasze Sprawy”. The Association, basing on the membership fees, organized many sorts of social meetings for the post-war immigrants; they often included lectures, dances and balls, as well as other kind of events aiming at integrating the newcomers, and giving them aid from the financial means obtained in this way. In this kind of activity “Samopomoc” especially took care of young people, especially those who were students, by supplying them with stipends, giving them loans, etc. It cooperated with Polish American organizations set up by the newly arriving immigrants. It was active in the life of American cultural organizations, staging exhibitions showing Polish culture and art. With Anna Górska's active inspiration, already at a very early stage a center was developed – that was affiliated with “Samopomoc” – of independent Polish creative work, and soon five autonomous departments were established, such as a Polish school, theatrical and sports sections, a youth club and a Ladies' circle with an education section. With time, from autonomous departments separate social organizations evolved, such as “Polonia” Sports Club, Polish School Organization, or Polish Theater; a choir called “Hejnał” and a dance group “Krakusy” were established, both supported financially and morally by “Samopomoc”. The Association contributed a lot of work, which is proven not only by the effort necessary to organize the events, but first of all by the level of financial outlay for assisting the immigrants. During the twenty-five years of work (1950-1975) “Samopomoc” spent at least 50 thousand dollars to this aim; during the first fifteen years (1950-1965) it was exactly $32, 806.86. The work of “Samopomoc” was the more so generous that in the whole twenty-five years none of its members-activists received any money; everyone treated it as welfare work only. Nearly from the very start “Samopomoc” tried to keep contact between the Polish immigrants and so it strove for building its own center, that is a building in which new arrivals from Poland could meet from time to time, talk about their common problems, and share the news from their homeland. After a few vain attempts at buying some land on which to build a house, “Samopomoc” finally joined the River's End Polish Center established by American Polish organizations, and paid it $25,000 in 1971. The formal union of “Samopomoc” and the Polish Center took place in 1975. Practically this meant the end of the Polish Emigrants' Association in California “Samopomoc”. The new organization – The Polish Center – that is open for all the Polish Americans, has been working until now.

During his pontificate Pope John Paul II made 104 foreign journeys and visited 130 countries. In 45 countries he met members of the Polonia (Polish Community Abroad), Polish emigrants and members of the Polish national minority in Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine. This happened in 19 European, 8 African and 9 South American countries. Moreover, the Pope met Poles in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Kazakhstan. During the meetings he made speeches they had expected. He also spoke to Polish pilgrims coming to Rome from various countries of the whole world. There were more than 70 such speeches. In them, the Pope ponders on the problems that Poles face when leaving their country and settling down abroad. They can be reduced to two basic ones. They are: maintaining their own spiritual identity based on Christian values in the Polish culture gained in their homeland, and integration with the nations living in the country they are going to settle. The Pope indicates that maintaining one’s own Christian identity is a necessary condition for having respect for oneself and for bringing a valuable contribution to the culture of the target countries. Integration in the meaning of joining the life and culture of the target countries, with maintaining the basic values of the Christian Polish culture is considered a necessary social process by the Pope.

In 1831 in Galicia there were former insurgents form the troops of the generals: Józef Dwernicki, Girolamo Ramorina, Samuel Różycki and others. They left their memories which are utilised by the present article: twenty fve diaries, memoirs, journals and correspondence. The social--economic features of Galician cities, towns and villages were selected from the above sources. The descriptions of itineraries also depict the picture of infrastructure or historical monuments of the locations passed by the insurgents. The analysed texts perceived circular cities as made of brick, with many so-called keepsakes of the past. Towns, dominant in Galician landscape were perceived as neat and tidy but muddy places with wooden buildings. The characteristic feature of the countryside was the so-called chimneyless huts. Galicia in 1831 was a land full of manor houses of various sizes where the nobility was sympathetic towards the national cause.

When a group of Polish emigrants came to Paris after the November Insurrection in the Autumn of 1831, their images of Paris as a splendid place were not confirmed. Poles were offended by street disorder, untidines and lack of space. They were also overpowered with noise, permanent street traffic and crowd. Feeling of solitude and loss was intensified in the face of the world of all-powerful trade and publicity. Polish emigrants were unable to find their place in that great, strange and ruled by power of money city, typical for Western-European civilization. Citizens of French capital were also not especially friendly. Poles experienced really nice moments when they visited respectable Paris monuments and remains of the past.

Opis:
The article discusses the causes, course and significance of the celebrations of “The Polish Emigrant's Week” that was organised on the whole territory of Poland in June 1930. The aim of this event, which had been prepared as a large scale one by committee in Warsaw that had numerous branches in the provinces, was: 1) raising the consciousness of the Polish society with respect to the proportions and significance of emigration from Polish lands to different countries. It also stressed the need of and profits from maintaining contacts and bonds between the several million mass of Poles living abroad and their homeland for both Poland and the emigrants; 2) raising funds for the construction of the Polish Emigrants’ Home in Warsaw that would concentrate state and community institutions working for the welfare of emigrants leaving Poland. The course of the “Emigrant's Week” is shown on the basis of archival records and press articles, and it presents the activity of State, community and Church officials in propaganda, cultural-educational and financial fields. Special attention is focused on the course of the “Emigrant's Week” in the area of East Małopolska (Little Poland), i. e. in the Lvov, Stanisławów and Tarnopol provinces where the phenomenon of emigration was especially intensive and complicated because of the ethnic composition of the population inhabiting that area. Poles, Ukrainians and Jews joined the work on the “Emigrant's Week”. The basic task here was to raise funds necessary to complete the construction of the Emigration Home in Lvov for emigrants belonging to all the three nations. The idea of building the Emigration Home had its roots in the necessity to secure protection against exploitation by illegal emigration agents to the masses of emigrating people. It was also supposed to provide help in gaining information about the immigration opportunities in different countries, about the social, economic and legal conditions prevailing in them, job markets for emigrants, formal requirements connected with obtaining passports, booking ship or railway tickets as well as securing decent conditions of transport to the border (night’s lodging, food) and during the travel to one’s destination. The Home was opened and blessed in 16 June 1930. On the territory of East Małopolska the action was repeated, albeit on a smaller scale, as “Emigrant's Day”, in the autumn of 1931.

The article discusses issues concerning long-distance cross-generational relations within families from the perspective of emigrants’ parents who live in the Silesian Voivodship. The empirical basis is a survey conducted in 2015 on a sample of 300 people. It reports the attitudes of the respondents to their children’s migration and the estimates of migration’s impact on family ties as well as on the commitment to livelihoods issues. The article focuses on the findings related to the frequency of contacts between parents and children, both direct and through digital tools. An important part of the considered issue is the parents’ anticipation of their own future. The article attempts to identify the parents’ potential concerns regarding their functioning within the transnational family framework in the context of their senility.

Opis:
Guaranteeing the availability of European labour markets constituted a very important element of the Polish foreign policy during the negotiation of conditions under which Poland would become a member of the European Union. At the time of the Polish accession, Poles as citizens of United Europe gained the right to take up legal work in other Member States. This opportunity was taken by Polish young people – “thirdgeneration emigrants” tempted by better earnings and prospects for the future. The proposed text is an attempt to capture migrants’ reality in the context of adaptative difficulties experienced by migrants with regard to globalisation-related transformations and the construct of a global teenager. The research results were obtained from two research projects carried out: (1) a research project carried out under the promotional grant in the years 2008-2012 (National Center for Science in Krakow – NN 106 348 140 (grant manager: Prof. Magdalena Piorunek, PhD) under the title: ‘Polish emigration and reemigration as an experience. Sociological and pedagogical aspect’, the results of which have been published in: Kozielska J., (2014) Post-accession migration. The theoretical and empirical context. Social support. The research sample in the quantitative analysis consisted of 174 persons who emigrated for at least one year and stayed in Poland for at least 6 months from the time of their return to the time of the research. The sample was targeted, and the target group consisted of return emigrants who emigrated during the pre-accession period and decided to stay in a European state rather than a “traditional” country of migration like the United States of America. The quantitative research was supplemented with a qualitative analysis of texts derived from hermeneutic methods, which included online forums (created by and for emigrants, both those who are still abroad and those who are planning to return or have already returned to Poland) and blogs containing fragments of emigrants’ biographies; (2) a research project carried out in London and Scotland under the POSTDOC scholarship of the Adam Mickiewicz University “Unique Graduate = Opportunities. An increase in the didactic potential of the Adam Mickiewicz University through proinnovative education in English, interdisciplinariness, e-learning, investment in human resources” under the title: ‘Transnational biographical counselling. Opis:
The author of the article discusses stages of the learning trajectory of emigrants who go through a period of floating. The experience of emigration, called a trajectory of floating (biography of floating), is not identical with the trajectory of suffering (F. Schütze). Introduced by A. Bron, the category of floating redefines this experience as emancipation and an educational process of learning. Studying the ways and methods of emigrants’ learning may help organise intercultural counselling for the already settled foreigners, newcomers from other cultures as well asthose planning to emigrate.

Opis:
The relation of pastoral activity to the ethnic identity of emigrants is a current problem. In order to define the model of this relation the Church takes into consideration two basic criteria: the dignity of a person and the unity of the Church. These criteria are, as it were, two poles orientating the Church's teaching and activity in this matter. Hence, four principles can be drawn according to which the pastoral activity: a. respects and strengthens the ethnic identity of emigrants; b. facilitates the openness of the ethnic groups to other societies; c. supports the Church's integration which contributes to the development of the original identity; d. rejects extreme and nationalistic attitudes, e.g.an artificial uniformism (assimilation), or false particularism. The influence of pastoral care on ethnic identity is a complex and many-levelled process. The following pastoral factors play a decisive role here: a. Catholic religion itself which is a symbiosis of faith and culture (inculturation of faith); b. pastoral ministration which has a certain cultural function in the emigrant environment; c. an ethnic parish which integrates the society of emigrants; d. an ethnic priest who is the leader and spiritual patron of the ethnic fellowship; e. different groups and Church institutions which respectively protect and develop the ethnic identity of emigrants.

Opis:
In this study the materials dealing with the Soviet realities published in Warsaw by the Russian emigrants’ weekly “Mech” during a year period (the first 45 issues) are analyzed. The analysis constitutes a segment of historical and political context prevailing at that time in Poland, especially of its complex relations with the Soviet Union. In retrospect one can observe a distinct turn in the weekly’s activity explained partly by a change of its form - from a magazine to newspaper (issue 21) which demanded replacement of is analytic way by more informative attitude and partly by separation from emigrant centre in Paris. The air of publications reflected difficult situation of the emigrants, though all information this way or another dealing with the Soviets was filled with biting comments and sheer anti-Soviet rhetoric. Also a clear quantitative tendency is shown in the number of the Soviets related publications, from 1-3 in the initial period up to 11-13 by the end of the period under the study. The scope of issues was also widening embracing economy, political life, repression, education, Soviet manhood, etc. The publication type change is also traced evolving to a more eye-witness, document support, interview, Soviet source mentioning, citation from contemporary Soviet literature depicting real life columnistic kind. The material analyzed gives much food for thought about the character of the Russian identity and its tragic split.

Opis:
The issues addressed in the title of the work have been exemplified with Jan Simonides’s travelogue Incarceratio, liberatio et peregrination. The text is an exemplar of the dramatic experience of Slovak Protestants in 1674-1675, following by their liberation and forced emigration lasting till 1682. Unfortunately, the original text by Simionides from 1676 has been not maintained. It was edited down by Josef Minarik from eighteenth-century copies as Imprisonment, liberation and peregrination of Jan Simonides and his comrade Tobias Masnik. Referring to the epoch documents, letters, notes and authentic surnames and taking into account the chronicle requirements – strict dating and narrative time division according to the sequence of events, Simonides gives a recipient a sense of authenticity. He is not blind to his own confession but he is interested in dissimilarities. Although he most often uses a collective subject, paradoxically, he gives a recipient his individual experience.

Opis:
Pierwszą stanowiła emigracja polityczno-wojskowa – oficerowie w wojsku tureckim, żołnierze francuskiej i hiszpańskiej legii cudzoziemskiej, oddziały wojskowe biorące udział w działaniach zbrojnych związanych z II wojną światową.
In this paper, we indicate the role and activity of Polish emigrants in Arabic countries and cultures. The regions considered in the text embrace north-western and north-eastern Africa, the Near East and the Arabian Peninsula – regions dominated by the peoples of Arabic descent. The first emigrants from the Polish territories began to arrive in Arabic countries as early as the Middle Ages and early Modern times. It was only from the end of the 18th century that the numbers began to grow, yet this part of the world has never been an attractive destination for settlement for Polish emigrants. The largest groups settled there during World War II, comprised of political refugees from the territories occupied by the Third Reich and those evacuated from the Soviet Union. The emigrants from Poland who made their way to Arabic countries can be divided into three groups. The first was formed by the political-military emigration – officers in the Turkish army, soldiers of the French and Spanish Foreign Legion, military troops participating in the battles of World War II. The economic and gainful employment-oriented emigration were the second group, constituted by craftsmen, professionals, artists, research and engineering personnel of the 19th and 20th centuries. Finally, the third was derived from socio-cultural emigration, i.e. members of the clergy who provide their services in this part of the world or Polish-Arabic married couples.

Opis:
Owing to the liberties granted the Church in the Kingdom of Poland after the revolution of 1905-1907, the Catholic clergy could take up social work, including the welfare of emigrants. Two Societies for Protection of Emigrants were founded in the Kingdom. The Warsaw Society was set up due to the efforts of the clergy from the diocese of Kujawy and Kalisz (Fathers Jan Stanisław Żak, Wojciech Helbich, Marian Fulman and Idzi Radziszewski). The Society in Płock acted by the Catholic Union. Father Adolf Szelążek, Rector of the Catholic seminary, seemed the most prominent social worker in the diocese of Płock. Shortage of social workers, particularly priests, and lack of .funds caused certain slackness on the part of the Societies. Above all they cared for the seasonal emigrants during their winter stays in the native country (religious instruction, talks on legal and economic problems) and kept in touch with them when they moved abroad, mostly by means of correspondence. It was postulated that clergymen should visit emigrants in the countries of their employment. These plans however were never fully realized owing among others to the reluctance of the clergy of Germany where most emigrants went. Although the majority of parish clergy were not particularly intersted in the welfare of emigrants, central action demanding reports and detailed statements before consistories forced them to take up the problem. Clergymen of two dioceses, Kujawy and Kalisz, and Płock were the most active, but priests from other dioceses also worked for the welfare of emigrants protecting them against exploitation. They paid, though, more attention to religious questions than to economic problems as the soluton of the latter was not within their powers.

The article focuses primarily on the institutions of the parish and family in relation to the cultural heritage of Polish Texans of the second wave since 1867. Reaching back to the beginnings of Polish emigration to the United States, which is associated with the settlement of Panna Maria in Texas by emigrants from Opole Silesia, the article presents the second wave of emigration from Galicia and Greater Poland. The analysis was based on the archival materials of the Polish Genealogical Society of Texas (PGST), which cover the periods from 1984 to 2021. The research material was collected from 124 PGST volumes (4,358 pages). The document proves that both the parish and the family were the basic units in the lives of Polish emigrants, around whom everyday family, social and religious life revolved.

This article presents an overview of the literary and publicistic heritage of emigrants in Tunisia introducing the “African” page of the expat chronicle of the Russian community. Through the example of the Bizertine cycle of poems by the poetess I. Knor-ring, the historical and literary body of the work of N. Monastyrev, A. Sernin, memoirs by M. Ardatov, V. von Berg, N. Knorring, A. Shirinskaya and publications in the periodical press we suggest a rich range of topics and imageries (history of the Russian f leet, loss of the Homeland, search in exile, diaspora life in the foreign land, etc.). The authors of the chronotope of the Russian exodus, and Bizerta as the last port of the Russian Squadron, meet individually authorial semiotic comprehension and interpenetration which ref lects the unique interaction of authenticity and mythologisation of reality in the space of the emigrant text.

The author uses the immersionist concept of counselling research to interpret the narratives of contemporary Polish emigrants and authentic documents (emigrants’ letters from The Polish Peasant in Europe and America by William Thomas and Flo- rian Znaniecki) and to identify the pre-emigration and migrant experiences which contribute to emigrants adopting (in the past and now) the role of a counselee and of a counsellor in the new environment. She also presents the processes of con- structing self-induced and incidental counselling, as well as the ways, types and settings of organising formal counselling in Polish immigrant communities. The author discusses the risks inherent in such activities and their time-bound differ- ences and similarities.

Opis:
A difficult financial situation, which resulted from high unemployment, was the main problem that the society of the Wieluń district had to face, after Poland regained its independence. This resulted in a tremendous increase of seasonal emigration to Western European countries for working purposes. The working population lost their contact with the Catholic faith there. In order to provide care for the religious life of emigrant diocese members, Bishop Teodor Kubina established “The Association of Polish Emigrants under the care of the Queen of the Polish Crown in the diocese of Częstochowa” whose goal was to unite seasonal workers, raise their level of morality and strengthen their patriotic attitudes. A particular group of diocese members, who was affected by the above-mentioned association, consisted of the residents of the Wieluń district.
