    Recent progress in the field of computational creativity has supplied an unanticipated model of the neurobiological knowledge management system known as the brain. Close examination of this model offers an alternative language for the field of knowledge management as well as a means for implementing cognitive agents coming closer than ever to emulating human intelligence and consciousness. Knowledge management (KM) theorists have proposed a number of frameworks for distinguishing different types of knowledge. Oftentimes we hear distinctions such as explicit versus tacit1, content-based or relational2, or new contrasted with established knowledge3. With close to three decades experience in emulating cognitive function in neural networks, the author finds such delineations interesting, to say the least, foreseeing a general debate that mirrors the ongoing dialogue between high- and low-level psychologists: the former group seeks to model human behavior on the basis of beliefs, desires, fears, and hopes, primitives that tend to be as cyclic in definition as KM terms such as 'explicit' or 'tacit'. The latter group takes a totally different tack, asserting as Crick4 did, that all we are, our intelligence, personalities, perhaps even soul, is the outcome of neural mechanics. Such reductionism may ultimately diminish certain mystiques, but the capture, development, sharing, and effectiveness of knowledge is about to enter a boom period exactly because of this new outlook.

    Artykuł jest przeglądem dorobku R. Thalera pod kątem możliwości jego wykorzystania do analizy konkurencyjności firm. Uwaga została skupiona szczególnie na firmach najmniejszych, w tym samozatrudnionych. Podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, w jaki sposób wprowadzenie elementów behawioralnych do analizy konkurencyjności przedsiębiorstw tego typu, może pomóc w rozwoju nauki oraz jak może być wykorzystane w praktyce gospodarczej. Traktując dorobek naukowy Thalera jako inspirację, postanowiono zidentyfikować główne narzędzia przez niego wypracowane, w tym różne typy błędów poznawczych, systematycznych błędów czy rzekomo nieistotne czynniki, które są pomijane w głównych nurtach teorii ekonomii, a w rzeczywistości mają istotne znaczenie dla procesu podejmowania decyzji. Dodatkowym celem analizy było zidentyfikowanie obszarów badawczych, których wzbogacenie o elementy ekonomii behawioralnej mogłoby przynieść najwięcej korzyści. Wyodrębniono dwa takie obszary: w teorii mikroekonomii – obszar „decyzje producenta” oraz w teorii makroekonomii – obszar dotyczący interwencji państwa i prowadzenia polityk publicznych.
    The article contains a review of R. Thaler’s scientific output with respect to its possible use for the analysis of competitiveness of companies. The attention is focused particularly on the smallest businesses, including the self-employed. An attempt is made to answer the question of how the introduction of behavioural elements into the competitiveness analysis of enterprises of this type can foster the development of science and how it can be used in the economic practice. Inspired by Thaler’s scientific output, the author decided to identify the main tools developed by Thaler, including the various types of cognitive biases, systematic errors, or supposedly irrelevant factors that are overlooked in the mainstream economic theories which, in fact, are essential for the decision-making process. An additional aim of the analysis is to identify the research areas which, if enriched with elements of behavioural economics, could be most beneficial. Two such areas are identified: in the microeconomic theory – the area of “manufacturer’s decisions”, and in the macroeconomic theory – the area of state intervention and public policies.

    The author summarizes the origin and development of the thaler since its emergence in Central Europe in the 1520s to the general spread of the term “thaler” for large silver coins in the 1540s as well as the attempts to replace the thaler with another type of coin in the Roman-German Empire under the Second and Third Imperial Coin Order. The year 1566 was a major turning point. The “imperial thaler” was redefined in metrological terms and the collection of custom duties in the North Sea straits was regulated, which (instead of gold coins) continued to be collected in silver thalers. This move spurred the expansion of the thaler coins in those countries of continental Europe that used the North Sea trade route. At that time, the thaler also became the equivalent for mutual conversions of the most important monetary systems. This is evidenced by the exchange rates from the end of the 16th century from Hamburg. In them, the ”imperial thaler” serves as a tool for the mutual conversion the seven major currencies used in the North Sea and Baltic trade areas (the Lübeck mark, the Hamburg pound, the Antwerp pound, the Amsterdam pound, the imperial Rhine gulden, the Lisbon milreis and the Polish gulden).
    Autor zwięźle podsumowuje genezę i rozwój talara od jego pojawienia się w Europie Środkowej w latach 20. XVI w. po powszechne rozprzestrzenienie się terminu „talar” na określenie dużej, srebrnej monety w latach 40. XVI stulecia, jak też próby zastąpienia w cesarstwie rzymsko-niemieckim talara monetą innego typu Drugą i Trzecią Cesarską Ordynacją Menniczą. Najważniejszym punktem zwrotnym był rok 1566. „Talar imperialny” został na nowo zdefiniowany pod względem metrologii, jak też uregulowano pobór ceł w cieśninach Morza Północnego, które (zamiast monet złotych) nadal pobierano w srebrnych talarach. To posunięcie pobudziło ekspansję monety talarowej w krajach Europy kontynentalnej korzystających ze szlaku handlowego Morza Północnego. W tym czasie, talar stał się także jednostką obrachunkową najważniejszych systemów monetarnych. Świadczą o tym kursy walut z końca XVI w. z Hamburga. „Talar imperialny” służy w nich jako narzędzie do przeliczania siedmiu najważniejszych walut używanych na obszarach handlowych Mórz Północnego i Bałtyckiego (marka lubecka, funt hamburski, funt antwerpski, funt amsterdamski, cesarski gulden reński, lizboński milreis i polski złoty).

    Ekonomia behawioralna jest stosunkowo nowym nurtem, kwestionującym podstawę stosowanego w ekonomii neoklasycznej modelowania podmiotu działań ekono- micznych jako homo oeconomicus. Wykazując nieracjonalność w podejmowaniu decyzji przez ludzi, systematyczne błędy, jakimi obarczone jest ludzkie rozumowanie w określonych sytuacjach, oraz odczuwaną przez większość osób awersję do straty, Kahneman i Tversky zastąpili teorię użyteczności oczekiwanej teorią niepewnych perspektyw, dając asumpt do dalszych badań nad podejmowaniem decyzji przez rzeczywiste podmioty eko- nomiczne. Richard Thaler, laureat Nagrody Nobla z dziedziny ekonomii z roku 2017, otrzymał to wyróżnienie w uznaniu zasług w rozwoju badań nad tymi zagadnieniami. W swoich pracach, opartych na eksperymentach laboratoryjnych oraz badaniach ankietowych, opisywał wiele interesujących efektów, w tym efekt posiadania czy mentalną rachunkowość.

    It is widely believed that the data contained in coin designs are fully reliable. In fact, the metrical data, i.e. information about the issuer, place and time of mintage are not always accurate. This can be the case of modern or even almost contemporary coins. Dates on coins happened not to be updated under Russian partition, German occupations during the WW II and Russian occupation in Polish People Republic. Unmatched record are thalers with an image and name of the Empress Maria Theresa (d. 1780) minted in large quantities in different countries with the same design for two hundred years. Although a similar situation could have existed in the early Middle Ages, we are lacking written sources to confirm that. The very coins are thus the only source. There are two main reasons why designs, these certificates of coins, happened to be false: first, because foreign coin designs were imitated; second, because own coin designs were not changed and thus underwent immobilization. In the first case, coins with the best reputation were imitated: Roman, Byzantine, Anglo-Saxon and Cologne coins, but also gold Arabic dinars. The best known examples of immobilized coins are Carolingian and Saxon pennies and pfennings with the names of the King Otto III and the Empress Adelheid. The latter were minted in large quantities for more than half a century. Therefore they were imitated both in Saxony and Poland, where also Anglo-Saxon, Bavarian and Czech patterns were copied. The best way to identify the real issuer, place and time of issuing of various imitations is to examine the die-links between these imitations and coins with ascertained designs. Nevertheless, sometimes new information contained in the designs of coins, and not taken from outside or from the past, is false. Good example are the twelfth / thirteenth century regional issues of a number of dukes in Poland who did not possess the right of minting. Therefore they issued coins with the names and images of their late fathers or even earlier ancestor. Errors in identifying coins may, however, arise not only from entrusting the false certificates, but also because of the improper interpretation of the designs. It is assumed, for example, that the legends explain the images from the field. In fact, words and images were separate elements that did not have to match. Falsifying legends occurred more frequently than one might expect in different times and on various territories. The driving force behind such actions was mainly economic, and sometimes also political. Accidents also played role. Therefore one must first thoroughly examine a coin, before he makes an attempt to interpret it as a historical source. Slightly extended version of this text in Polish was to appear in the publication of materials from the conference Money and Banking in Great Poland held in Poznań on 20-21 November 2008 (35 figures).

    Band sawing is one of the most efficient methods for which in general it is known that uneven tool wear, chatter and cutting blade defects can affect cutting performance significantly. A data acquisition system was arranged on an industrial band saw machine in order to characterize the band sawing process based on measurements of forces. In this paper, the cutting force signals are analyzed in order to demonstrate important relations to workpiece and cutting blade properties. It is shown that cutting forces contain information about in homogeneity of a cut workpiece. Signals of cutting forces also reveal important properties of blade geometry that is related to uneven blade wear. Discontinuities such as blade welding are clearly evident in force signals and it is shown that unevenness of blade backing geometry can cause a significant variation in forces due to wedging between the workpiece and a blade support. An original method for blade shape extraction from force signals is presented in detail. Paper also reports on chatter phenomena observed at specific cutting conditions. Possible solutions to the addressed problems and phenomena are discussed in the conclusion.

    Thalers struck by Central European rulers were in circulation in the Eastern part of Europe too. Among the numismatic holdings of the “Pereyaslav” National Museum in Ukraine are coins of this type, which were in circulation throughout Ukrainian territory. The present publication of the Museum holdings of coins of this type supplements our picture of coin circulation in Ukraine in the 17th and 18th centuries.
    Stałe zainteresowanie budzą srebrne talary wybite przez władców Europy Zachodniej, które szeroko obiegały również na rynkach Europy wschodniej. W zbiorach narodowego muzeum „Perejeslav” znajdują się dotychczas nieopublikowane talary, które trafiły na terytorium Ukrainy. Ich publikacja uzupełnia dane na temat obiegu pieniężnego na ziemiach Ukrainy w XVII i XVIII w.
    Особый интерес представляют крупные серебряные талеры, чеканенные от имени правителей государств Западной Европы, получившие широкое распространение тоже на восточном европейском денежном рынке. В фондах Национальнoго историко-этнографического заповедника „Переяслав” хранятся неопубликованные раньше талерные монеты имевшие распространение на денежном рынке украинских земель. Они добавляют данные об монетном обращении на территории Украины XVII-XVIII веков. Особый интерес представляют крупные серебряные талеры, чеканенные от имени правителей государств Западной Европы, получившие широкое распространение тоже на восточном европейском денежном рынке. В фондах Национальнoго историко-этнографического заповедника „Переяслав” хранятся неопубликованные раньше талерные монеты имевшие распространение на денежном рынке украинских земель. Они добавляют данные об монетном обращении на территории Украины XVII-XVIII веков.
