In order to provide safety of navigation, the ship's officer employs a lot of different devices which are installed on navigational bridge. One of them, very useful equipment is system for Automatic Identification of Ships (AIS). How ever, the Information thus obtained can be inaccurate or even false. In this article the author presented ways to verify the data obtained from Automatic Identification of Ships (AIS) with the help of radar (ARPA). The advantages of earlier verification of information obtained from AIS are presented when a vessel is manoeuvring and the data presented by ARPA are not reliable. An algorithm of a program which makes it possible to verify the reliability of data obtained from AIS has been presented here. A possibility has been demonstrated of constructing a device employing that algorithm in order to support the navigating officer in making decisions avoiding collisions. This system will alert the Watch Officer about incorrectness and about inaccuracy of ARPA and AIS. This solution could be a very helpful tool to be used in adverse weather conditions particularly for the vessels in collision situation.

Opis:
Common use of shipboard AIS creates conditions for the use of a new kind of dynamic data in the situation of the risk of collision. AIS position report is a source of supplementary information derived from error leveraged radar measurement. However, in view of the results of the studies there are opinions with regard to inconsistent AIS dynamic data in the process of decision-making by the officer of the watch. By taking into consideration the recordings of the studies and technical specification of AIS it can be concluded that the results of inconsistent data have significant role in collision avoidance manoeuvring.

The problem of determining geographic position considered only in terms of measurement error, seems to be solved on a global scale. In view of the above, from the nineties, the operational characteristics of radio-navigation systems are equally important. The integrated navigation system operate in a multisensor environment and it is important to determinate a temporal validity of data to make it usable in data fusion process. In the age of digital data processing, the requirements for continuity, availability, reliability and integrity information are already grown. This article analyses the problem of time stamp discrepancies of dynamic position reports. For this purpose, the statistical summary of Latency Position Reports has been presented. The navigation data recordings were conducted during 30 days of March 2014 from 19 vessels located in area of Gulf of Gdansk. On the base of Latency Position Reports it is possible to designate the availability of AIS system.
Problem określania pozycji geograficznej, z racji powszechnej dostępności systemów satelitarnych, w kontekście dokładności wyznaczeń wydaje się obecnie drugorzędny w skali globalnej. Od lat dziewięćdziesiątych ocena własności operacyjnych systemów radionawigacyjnych jest uważana za równie ważną. Zintegrowane systemy nawigacyjne działają w środowisku wielosensorowym i bardzo ważne staje się określenie zmienności w czasie danych nawigacyjnych, jeśli mają one podlegać fuzji. W erze cyfrowego przetwarzania danych wymagania ciągłości, dostępności, niezawodności i wiarygodności informacji wzrastają. W artykule zaprezentowano analizę problemu niezgodności znacznika czasu w odniesieniu do informacji dynamicznej w kontekście informacji o pozycji. W tym celu poddano analizie statystycznej opóźnienie informacji o pozycji. Rejestracje danych z dziewiętnastu statków były prowadzone przez trzydzieści dni marca 2014 roku na akwenie Zatoki Gdańskiej. Wykazano, że na bazie informacji o opóźnieniu raportów pozycyjnych możliwe jest wyznaczenie dostępności systemu AIS.

Automatyczny system identyfikacji statków dla znacznej części jednostek jest obecnie traktowany jako wyposażenie obowiązkowe. Pomimo początkowych obiekcji również personel pokładowy oraz systemów nadzoru ruchu coraz chętniej z niego korzysta. Nie milkną jednak głosy krytyczne, zgłaszające zastrzeżenia co do celowości, wartości systemu, a nawet zagrożeń wynikających z jego wprowadzenia. Jedną ze sygnalizowanych niedoskonałości usług świadczonych przez system AIS jest dostępność transmisji. Pojawiły się doniesienia o niedoskonałości systemu jako kanału transmisji danych, czego dowodem miały być przypadki braku możliwości odbioru sygnałów w zaplanowanym interwale czasowym. W artykule poddano analizie problem dostępności systemu AIS z punktu widzenia jakości kanału transmisji danych i podjęto próbę oceny dostępności kanału transmisji serwisu AIS. Wykorzystując dane zarejestrowane przez stację VTS Gdynia pochodzące ze stacji bazowych rozmieszczonych na wybrzeżu Zatoki Gdańskiej, zaproponowano metodę oceny dostępności serwisu AIS.
The automatic identification system of ships is considered obligatory equipment in relation to a large number of ships. Despite the initial objections deck personnel and traffic control personnel are more and more willing to use it. Voices of criticism, questioning purposefulness and value of the system as well dangers related to its use can still be heard. One of the signaled deficiencies of the services offered by the AIS is transmission availability. There has appeared some information concerning deficiencies of the system as a channel for data transmission, which can be proved by cases of inability to receive signals at the planned time interval. The paper analyses the problem of availability of transmission channel in the AIS service in relation to the quality of the transmission channel. It also attempts to assess availability of the transmission channel in the AIS service. Using data recorded by Gdynia VTS station coming from base station located along the Bay of Gdańsk coast, a method for assessing AIS service availability is proposed.

The modern Naval Co-operation and Guidance for Shipping Automated Data Processing (NCAGS ADP) systems obtain shipping information from different sources to have the most recent shipping picture in the area. Most of these systems use the AIS, because it is the mandatory tool for merchant ships to be equipped with, according to the new regulations of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). So far, only merchants over 300 gross tonnage have to fit it on board, but the intention is to be installed on all 'sea-goers'. This mandatory tool gives NCAGS ADP systems all necessary data almost automatically in every few seconds. This article provides a short overview of the structure and capabilities of AIS.
Organizacja NCAGS wspiera dwóch najważniejszych użytkowników morza: żeglugę oraz siły morskie. Wsparcie i dekonfliktacja z jednej strony są osiągalne w drodze identyfikacji potencjalnych zagrożeń, z drugiej - dzięki monitoringowi ruchu żeglugowego na głównych szlakach komunikacyjnych. W związku z tym sprawą kluczowej wagi staje się pozyskanie i utrzymanie obrazu żeglugi w obszarze operacyjnego zainteresowania dowódcy sił morskich. Aby wykonać to zadanie, organizacja NCAGS musi używać, wciąż rozwijanych, systemów komputerowego przetwarzania danych, takich jak NAMESIS, NSCIMA i BRITE. Artykuł przedstawia struktury i możliwości tych systemów.

Opis:
Radar and ARPA feature certain efficacy limitations due to weather conditions and target manoeuvres. Therefore, it appears rational to supplement the information derived from radar with additional information. A system which is claimed to be tailored to perform this task is AIS delivering proper information automatically and continuously. However, in certain users opinion, integrity of AIS data is still insufficient. In this paper, discussion concerning incompleteness and integrity of this type of data is presented. To prove effectiveness of AIS dynamic data in collision avoidance, detailed investigations have been conducted. Analysed data originate from the Gulf of Gdansk, dating back to the years 2006‐2012. According to the research results, there are exceptional situations, when the information coming from the sensors cooperating with AIS is incomplete. This problem concerns information related to HDG and ROT, especially, when the vessels are not “on the way”.

Due to safety reasons, the movement of a ship in coastal areas should be monitored, tracked, recorded, and stored. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is a suitable tool to use in performing these functions. The probability limit for the AIS dynamic data availability can be limited by the lack of a Global Position System (GPS) signal, heading (HDG), and rate of turn (ROT) data in the position report. The unavailability of a data link is an additional limitation. To fill this gap, it is possible to attach the discrete Kalman filter (KF) for the position and course estimation. Coordinate estimation in the absence of a transmission link can improve the quality of the AIS service at Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) stations. This paper has presented the Kalman filtering algorithm to improve the possibilities for ship motion tracking and monitoring in the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) and fairways area. More than 570 iterations were calculated and the results have been presented in figures to familiarize the reader with the operating principle of the Kalman filter algorithm.

This paper considers the degree of competition among small and medium-sized container ports located in a multi-port gateway region. The level of port competition is evaluated by means of an analysis of the revealed preferences in the port-calling pattern of container feeder vessels deployed on their various links and routes. Unit of analysis is feeder vessel sailing legs and ports stays at/between adjacent container ports. At these ports’ terminals, ships are moored and loading and unloading of containers are performed. The vessel movement data is provided by the Automatic Identification System (AIS). A study of the principal container ports in the Oslo Fjord area is performed, measuring the actual container feeder traffic during the year of 2015. It is demonstrated to which extent ports in the Oslo Fjord region are acting as substitutes, and to which extent they are functioning more as a complement to each other.

Równolegle z coraz powszechniejszym stosowaniem systemu AIS pojawiają się opinie o jego niedoskonałościach kojarzonych z brakiem transmisji lub przekazywaniem niewiarygodnych informacji. W artykule omówiono zagadnienie niezdatności informacyjnej AIS przejawiające się przekazywaniem niekompletnej lub niewiarygodnej informacji. Uwzględniając wyniki badań i analiz innych autorów, rejestracje własne oraz specyfikację techniczną systemu, zaproponowano założenia modelu oceny niezdatności AIS. Przedstawiono również wyniki badań pilotażowych kompletności informacji transmitowanych systemem AIS w rejonie Zatoki Gdańskiej.
As AIS is more and more commonly used there appear opinions concerned with its deficiencies associated with absence of data transmission or transferring incredible information. The paper discusses the issue of uselessness of AIS information manifested in transmitting incomplete or incredible information. Taking into consideration the results of investigations and analyses done by other authors, our own records and technical specification of the system proposed are some assumptions for a model to be used to assess uselessness of AIS. The paper also presents the results of pilot investigations into completeness of information transmitted with AIS in the Bay of Gdańsk.

The aim of this paper is to understand the real activity and operating situation of container ships in order to improve navigation efficiency. The study focused on the navigation for an entire ship voyage to understand the real activity of container ships using the historical ship navigation based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, which is possible so as to unveil the characteristics of real ship activity. The analysis considers ship voyages in the Seto Inland Sea and its oceanic waters, which are the primary traffic routes for container transportation particularly for China, Japan, and South Korea. The results of this study can be used to improve the efficiency of container ships and develop a smoother maritime transportation.

Due to the safety reason, the ship movement on the littoral area should be monitored, tracked, recorded and stored. Automatic Identification System (AIS) is the perfect tool to ensure this requirement. The limit probability for the AIS dynamic data availability can be limited by the lack of Global Position System (GPS) signal, heading (HDG) and rate of turn (ROT) data in position report. Availability of data link is an additional limitation. For this purpose, it is possible to attach the Discrete Kalman filter (KF) for the position, and course estimation. Coordinate estimation in the absence of a transmission link can improve the quality of AIS service at Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) stations. This article presents Kalman filtering algorithm to improve the possibilities of ship motion tracking and monitoring in the TSS (Traffic Separation Scheme) and fairways area. Only 39 iterations were presented to familiarize how the Kalman filter algorithm works. The archival data from 2006 were used deliberately. During that time, there were problems with the AIS availability service. With the use of measurements series from those years, it is easier to observe the effectiveness of Kalman filter in absence of AIS data.
Dla zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa żeglugi ruch jednostek pływających w rejonie wód wewnętrznych i w strefie przybrzeżnej powinien być monitorowany i rejestrowany, najlepiej w postaci cyfrowej. Doskonałym narzędziem do tego celu jest automatyczny system identyfikacji (AIS). Dostępność danych dynamicznych AIS może zostać jednak zredukowana z powodu braku dostępu do systemów pozycjonowania (GPS) oraz braku danych o kursie (HDG) i prędkości kątowej (ROT) w raportach pozycyjnych. Niedostępność łącza komunikacyjnego w paśmie VHF jest dodatkowym ograniczeniem systemu. W celu estymacji danych dotyczących pozycji i kursu statku w czasie, gdy dane te nie są dostępne, można zastosować dyskretny filtr Kalmana (KF). Estymacja współrzędnych w przypadku braku łącza komunikacyjnego wynikającego z ograniczeń dostępności systemu AIS podnosi jakość serwisu zarządzania ruchem statków (VTS). W artykule zaprezentowano 39 iteracji filtru Kalmana. Celowo zastosowano dane archiwalne z 2006 roku, albowiem w tych rejestracjach występują wyraźne przerwy w strumieniu danych. Rzecz w tym, że efektywność zaproponowanego rozwiązania łatwiej zaobserwować, jeśli zostaną zastosowane serie pomiarowe z okresu, gdy występowały problemy z dostępnością serwisu AIS.

According to the IMO recommendation when the target data from AIS and radar tracking are both available and the association criteria are fulfilled such that the AIS and radar information are considered as for one physical target, then as a default condition in radar equipment, the AIS target symbol and the alphanumerical AIS target data should be automatically selected and displayed only. The article presents research conducted in real conditions on the reliability of information presented by the ship's AIS about the passing distance with the other vessel equipped with AIS and time to pass it by comparing data from the AIS with that presented by ARPA.

With the wide use of AIS system in the world, especially in ports and the waters with heavy traffic, AIS message loss may be related to environmental conditions, obstacle, limitation of VHF technology and AIS network overload, thereby reducing the AIS signal successful reception rate. This paper selected typical AIS data received by Yagi and Omni antennas at the same time in specific waters, uses grid and AIS data recovery technology, establishes the AIS signal coverage model, analyzes signal reception rate of Yagi antenna and Omni antenna of AIS base station, and verified the superiority of Yagi antenna in AIS signal reception rate.

South Louisiana is undergoing rapid land loss and the construction and utilization of navigation channels by the offshore oil and gas industry, the commercial fishing industry, the oil refining industry, and freight shippers is one cause. A network of natural and man-made navigation channels support commerce and industry throughout the region, but no quantitative information is available on the users of the channels and their contribution to land loss. The purpose of this note is to characterize utilization across eight channels in South Louisiana using data from the Automatic Identification System. Approximately 125,000 vessels used the channels over a two year period between 2011-2012. The Mississippi River was the most heavily utilized channel with an average of 345 vessels per week across the report zone, followed by Bayou Lafourche and Sabine Pass with about 195 vessels per week. The oil refining industry was the primary user of the Calcasieu and Sabine Pass channels while the freight industry was the primary user of the Mississippi River. The offshore oil and gas industry were the primary users of Bayou Lafourche, the Houma Navigation Canal, the Atchafalaya River and Freshwater Bayou.

Maritime traffic situations is regulated in the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), but how well are these rules followed by officers on board vessels? When the world shipping fleet grow and the traffic becomes more intensive, the risk of collision increase. By analysing AIS data from vessels in the traffic separation scheme Bornholmsgat during 24 hours in December 2013, 421 traffic situations were found where the passing distance between the vessels were less than 1.5 nautical miles. The compliance with the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) seems to be good, but the average avoiding action is less than the recommended manoeuver.

W artykule autorzy analizują możliwość wykorzystania coraz powszechniej dostępnych danych z systemu AIS do celów planowania, prowadzenia i koordynacji akcji poszukiwawczo ratowniczych na morzu. Właściwy dobór adekwatnej jednostki do specyfiki akcji poszukiwawczo-ratowniczej może w znaczący sposób wpłynąć na jej skuteczność. Opracowana metoda filtracji danych AIS jest pomocna w selekcji jednostek nieratowniczych, które pod względem techniczno-eksploatacyjnym różnią się między sobą i w różnym stopni mogą być przydatne do konkretnej akcji SAR. W artykule omówiono działanie sytemu AIS, format pozyskiwanych danych oraz metodę ich dekodowania. Ponadto scharakteryzowano najważniejsze aspekty związane z selekcją i doborem jednostek nieratowniczych do celów akcji poszukiwawczo-ratowniczych w oparciu o dane AIS.
In this article, the authors analyse the possibility of using AIS data, which are becoming more and more widely available, for the purposes of planning, conducting and coordinating search and rescue operations at sea. The proper selection of an appropriate unit to suit the specifics of an search and rescue operation may significantly affect its effectiveness. Developed method of AIS data filtration is helpful in the selection of rescue units, which are technically and operationally different from each other and can be in different degrees useful for a specific SAR action. The article discusses the operation of the AIS system, the format of the collected data and the method of their decoding. In addition, the most important aspects related to the selection of non-professional rescue units for Search and Rescue operations based on AIS data have been characterized.

The basic concept of the function of the Archaeological Information System (AIS) is the following: A GIS (Geographic Information System) is integrated into the virtual research environment of the AIS and allows access to external and internal databases through the Internet or intranets. The AIS is utilised for visualisation, analysis, and finally publication of heterogeneous archaeological data (site registries, excavation plans and reports, and photographic records) through the integration of additional open-source tools. This article investigates settlement patterns and the conception of settlement spaces west and east of the lower Oder from the Late Roman Iron Age until the Early Middle Ages. All relevant data from archaeological finds and natural features are condensed into the AIS and analysed as a case study on the use of experimental design of the developed AIS. A pattern of discrete settlement clusters containing multiple individual settlements was identified during the Late Roman Iron Age. These clusters lay exclusively in areas with high natural potential for crop cultivation and animal husbandry. The borderlands demarcating these clusters are partly infertile and partly fertile, indicating that the agricultural potential of the landscape was not wholly responsible for the location of these clusters, but rather that this was done in a planned fashion and based on social concepts. Considerable emigration out of the Oder region occurred in the Migration Period, reaching its high point in the late fifth century A.D. and resulting in a broad desettled region in the sixth and early seventh centuries. First the settlement clusters underwent a process of concentration and only those in optimal natural resource surroundings could continue to exist. Not until the second phase do these clusters dissolve and for a brief time there were only individual settlements lying far away from one another. Interestingly, the repopulation of the Oder region during the Early Middle Ages in the eighth century initially copied the old pattern of discrete settlement clusters. Following the first consolidation phase however settlement formation of the Oder region at the end of this period in the ninth and tenth century was widespread and the previous spatial concept of discrete settlement clusters abandoned.1
Podstawowe założenia funkcji archeologicznego systemu informacyjnego (AIS) są następujące: GIS (geograficzny system informacji) jest zintegrowany z wirtualnym środowiskiem badawczym AIS i umożliwia dostęp do zewnętrznych i wewnętrznych baz danych przez Internet i Intranet. AIS służy wizualizacji, analizie i wreszcie publikacji heterogenicznych danych archeologicznych (spisów stanowisk, planów i raportów z wykopalisk) poprzez zastosowanie dalszych narzędzi z otwartych zasobów. Prezentowany artykuł poświęcony jest rozważaniom nad wzorcami osadniczymi i konceptem przestrzeni osadniczej na zachód i wschód od dolnej Odry od późnego okresu wpływów rzymskich do wczesnego średniowiecza. Wszystkie istotne informacje o znaleziskach archeologicznych i naturalnych cechach krajobrazu zostały razem zestawione w oprogramowaniu AIS i przeanalizowane jako studium przypadku. W późnym okresie wpływów rzymskich stwierdzić można obecność wyodrębniających się wyraźnie zespołów osadniczych, na które składa się po kilka osiedli. Skupiska te położone są wyłącznie na obszarach o dużym potencjale gospodarczym, zarówno z punktu widzenia uprawy roślin jak i hodowli. Rubieże tych skupisk, i przestrzenie między nimi to jednak po części tylko obszary o małej żyzności, co świadczy tym, że uwarunkowania gospodarcze były tylko jednym z czynników wpływających na takie właśnie rozmieszczenie osadnictwa i że istotną rolę w tym względzie musiały odgrywać również czynniki społeczne. Znacząca emigracja z ziem położonych w dorzeczu dolnej Odry ma miejsce w okresie wędrówek ludów, osiągając apogeum w V wieku naszej ery i skutkując trwałym wyludnieniem w szóstym i początkach siódmego stulecia. Proces ten przebiega w dwóch fazach. Początkowo następuje koncentracja osadnictwa połączona z zanikiem całych skupisk osadniczych leżących na gorszych z gospodarczego punktu widzenia terytoriach. Następnie dochodzi do zmniejszenia się gęstości zaludnienia w tych skupiskach, które wciąż funkcjonowały. W rezultacie sieć osadniczą tworzą pojedyncze stanowiska, położone w dużej odległości od siebie. Interesujące jest to, że w początkach powtórnego zasiedlania dorzecza dolnej Odry – w ósmym wieku – sieć osadnicza kopiuje starszy wzorzec z wyraźnie wyodrębnionymi skupiskami osadniczymi. Dopiero w IX i X wieku, wraz ze wzrostem gęstości zasiedlenia, model ten zostaje porzucony i zacierają się granice pomiędzy skupieniami osadniczymi.

Opis:
Ship route planning is one of the key issues in enhancing traffic safety and efficiency. Many route planning methods have been developed, but most of them are based on the information from charts. This paper proposes a method to generate shipping routes based on historical ship tracks. The ship's historical route information was obtained by processing the AIS data. From which the ship turning point was extracted and clustered as nodes. The ant colony algorithm was used to generate the optimize route. The ship AIS data of the Three Gorges dam area was selected as a case study. The ships’ optimized route was generated, and further compared with the actual ship's navigation trajectory. The results indicate that there is space of improvement for some of the trajectories, especially near the turning areas.

Interpolation of ship motion vectors is able to be used for estimating the lost ship AIS dynamic information, which is important for replaying marine accidents and for analysing marine traffic data. The previous methods can only interpolate ship’s position, while not including ship's course and speed. In this paper, vector function is used to express the relationship between the ship’s time and space coordinates, and the tangent of the vector function and its change rate are able to express physical characteristics of ship’s course, speed and acceleration. The given AIS dynamic information can be applied to calculate the parameters of ship's vector function and then the interpolation model for ship motion vectors is developed to estimate the lost ship dynamic information at any given moment. Experiment results show that the ship motion vector function is able to depict the characteristics of ship motions accurately and the model can estimate not only the ship’s position but also ship’s course and speed at any given moment with limited differences.

According to the IMO recommendation when the target data from radar tracking and AIS are both available and the association criteria are fulfilled such that the radar and AIS information are considered as for one physical target, then as a default condition in radar equipment should be automatically selected and displayed the AIS target symbol and the alphanumerical AIS target data only. The article presents research conducted in real sea conditions on the reliability of information presented by the ship's AIS and ARPA about the passing distance with the other vessel tracked by radar equipment and fitted with AIS.

Vessel traffic flow is a key parameter for channel-through capacity and is of great significance to vessel traffic management, channel and port design and navigational risk evaluation. Based on the study of parameters of characteristics of vessel traffic flow related to channel-through capacity, this paper puts forward a brand-new mathematical model for one-way channel-through capacity in which parameters of channel length, vessel arrival rate and velocity difference in different vessels are involved and a theoretical calculating mechanism for the channel-through capacity is provided. In order to verify availability and reliability of the model, extensive simulation studies have been carried out and based on the historical AIS data, an analytical case study on the Xiazhimen Channel validating the proposed model is presented. Both simulation studies and the case study show that the proposed model is valid and all relative parameters can be readjusted and optimized to further improve the channel-through capacity. Thus, all studies demonstrate that the model is valuable for channel design and vessel management.

Collision avoidance is one of the high-level safety objectives and requires a complete and reliable description of maritime traffic situation. A combined use of data provided by independent data sources is an approach to improve the accuracy and integrity of traffic situation related information. In this paper we study the usage of radar images for automatic identification system (AIS) and radar fusion. Therefore we simulate synthetic radar images and evaluate the tracking performance of the particle filter algorithm as the most promising filter approach. During the filter process the algorithm estimates the target position and velocity which we finally compare with the known position of the simulation. This approach allows the performance analysis of the particle filter for vessel tracking on radar images. In a second extended simulation we add the respective AIS information of the target vessel and study the gained level of improvement for the particle filter approach. The work of this paper is integrated in the research and development activities of DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation dealing with the introduction of data and system integrity into the maritime traffic system. One of the aimed objectives is the automatic assessment of the traffic situation aboard a vessel including integrity information.

It is essential to evaluate safety of marine traffic for the improvement of efficiency and safety of marine traffic. Spread of AIS makes observation of actual marine traffic more easily and faster than before. Besides, description of collision avoidance behaviours of ships are indispensable to simulate a realistic marine traffic. It is important to develop and implement an algorithm of collision avoidance corresponding to a target traffic or target area into the marine traffic simulation because actual actions for collision avoidance depend on circumstances where ships are sailing. The authors developed an automated marine traffic simulation system with AIS data. And in this paper, we proposed a series of systematic procedures for marine traffic simulation including analysing for collision avoidance behaviours using AIS data.

Zgodnie z zaleceniami IMO, jeżeli dane o obiekcie są dostępne zarówno z AIS jak i z radarowej automatycznej pomocy nakresowej (ARPA lub ATA) oraz kryteria łączenia danych są spełnione tak, że informacje z AIS i radarowe są traktowane jako dotyczące jednego obiektu fizycznego, to w urządzeniach radarowych, jako stan domyślny, powinny być automatycznie wybierane i wyświetlane tylko symbol AIS i dane alfanumeryczne AIS tego obiektu. Artykuł przedstawia przeprowadzone w warunkach rzeczywistych wstępne badania wiarygodności prezentowanej przez statkowy AIS informacji o odległości i czasie mijania z drugim statkiem wyposażonym też w AIS, poprzez porównanie danych z AIS z prezentowanymi przez ARPA.

Automatic Identification System (AIS) is primarily used as a tracking system for ships, but with the launch of satellites to collect these data, new and previously untested possibilities are emerging. This paper presents the development of heuristics for establishing the specific ship type using information retrieved from AIS data alone. These heuristics expand the possibilities of AIS data, as the specific ship type is vital for several transportation research cases, such as emission analyses of ship traffic and studies on slow steaming. The presented method for developing heuristics can be used for a wider range of vessels. These heuristics may form the basis of large-scale studies on ship traffic using AIS data when it is not feasible or desirable to use commercial ship data registers.

The report presents the simulation results of collision between m/v “Gdynia” and m/v “Fu Shan Hai”. The analysis was performed by means of decision support in collision situations. This system is based on a structure of programme multiagents using AIS data (Automatic Identification System) with the possibility of cooperation between agents or vessels. The multiagent system of supporting anticollision decisions increases the reliability of navigational information and permits making right decisions, thereby increasing safety at sea.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) provides situational awareness for vessels at sea. AIS has a number of known security vulnerabilities that can lead to a several types of attacks on AIS, including the ability to create ghost vessels, false warning or meteorological messages, or bogus virtual aids-to-navigation (AtoN). A number of methods, with varying levels of complexity, have been proposed to better secure AIS and, indeed, emerging AIS protocols will implement some of these mechanisms. Nevertheless, little has been done to secure the current standards, which will remain in use for some time. This paper presents Protected AIS (pAIS), a demonstration of capability implementation using public-key cryptography methods to address several AIS security vulnerabilities, maintain backward compatibility, and be able to interoperate with non-pAIS devices.

Opis:
Ship navigation and operational activities at sea need meteorological and hydrographic information to enhance safety and efficiency. Besides observations collected from deployed data buoys, marine meteorological information services rely on weather observation reports from ships to increase the data density and thus service quality. Automatic Identification System (AIS), adopted internationally to facilitate ship-ship and ship-shore data exchange, has developed into communication links between ship/shore and buoys with many potential applications. This paper presents AIS applications designed and implemented for marine meteorological information services in a long-term project initiated by the Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan. Achievements of this initiative include: versatile service delivery via shore-based AIS network to shipborne application platforms such as smart phones, remote controllable moving weather data collection, and assisted sharing of weather observation reports from ships. Typhoon forecast and warning is one of the key applications implemented for this region.

The satellite-based Automatic Identification System (AIS) system has continuously been developed by the shipping industry in recent years. This paper introduces the satellite-based AIS including the concept, the system structure, the development and its new applications. The Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system, which is mandatory to be required on certain classes of ships engaged on international voyages to report their position at least every six hours using onboard communication means however, has similar kind of function of ship monitoring with the satellite-based AIS system. Based on the basic introduction of the LRIT system, this paper presents the comprehensive comparison between satellite-based AIS and LRIT in terms of the ship’s cost, the communication scheme, the monitoring coverage, the information details and the information creditability. The conclusion that the satellite-based AIS should be encouraged to effectively play a complement role to the LRIT system is advanced in the paper.

The operational measures in which a ship needs to avoid specified areas to escape ship stability failures were discussed at the International Maritime Organization as a part of the second generation intact stability criteria. It is necessary that the rationality and practicality of the operational measures are carefully investigated. In this study, master’s route decision-making criteria of trans-ocean vehicle carriers have been clarified by comparing the Pacific and the Atlantic data, derived from Satellite AIS and ocean wave data. Features of voyage routes of each ocean were discussed, followed by analysis of the encountered wave direction and height during a voyage. The master’s route selection criteria were defined by comparing the probability densities of the wave heights that occurred in the navigable area and that of the actual encountered waves. The navigation hours in a stormy area were also studied.

This article presents the movement vector research conducted in the radar laboratory of Gdynia Maritime University and during vessel cruises. The precision of designating the vessels' location, course, speed and CPA were researched using on-baord radars and AIS data. It is concluded that the precision of designating the researched parameters is greater than the International Maritime Organization requires.

The operational limitations are discussed at the IMO as a part of the second generation intact stability criteria. Since it is a first attempt to introduce operational efforts into safety regulations, comprehensive discussions are necessary to realize practically acceptable ones. Therefore this study investigates actual navigation routes of container ships and pure car carriers in the trans-North Pacific Ocean in winter, because they are prone to suffer significant parametric roll which is one of stability failure modes. Firstly, interviews are made to shipmasters who have experiences to have operated the subject ships to identify major elements for route selection in the North Pacific Ocean. Secondly, sufficient number of actual navigation records is collected from Satellite AIS data to derive the weather criteria for the route selection in severe weather condition. Finally, shipmaster’s on-board decision-making criteria are discussed by analysing the ship tracking data and weather data.

Digital selective calling (DSC) has a certain drawbacks, which have led to the fact that it is practically not used in address radio communications. Attempts to improve it only within the DSC system itself did not lead to any noticeable results due to neglecting of real user needs. The article proposes an approach to improve the user interface of DSC based on the integration of VHF MF/HF DSC equipment with the INS within the three main outputs of strategic direction of e-navigation development related to the integration of communication and navigation systems and, in particular, the S-mode. This approach allows us to significantly simplify the DSC user interface, based on the standardization of DSC integration for all three VHF MF/HF communication sub bands. For implementation such standardization an additional inclusion into the integration a satellite AIS system should be done. The feasibility of the proposal is supported by the existence of relevant IEC standards and IMO documents. The possibility of increasing the cyber security level of AIS messages in this interface is also considered.

A Yagi plasma antenna model was established by HFSS according to the relationship between plasma dielectric constant and electron density. The patterns were simulated by changing plasma parameters and the number of director dipoles. Results show that when the passive vibrators were switched off, the antenna is omnidirectional antenna. The directionality increases with the increase of the number of passive dipole and the main lobe of which narrows down. Then the plasma Yagi antenna model is established by plasma tube, the gain changed by changing the number of passive dipoles, so the plasma Yagi antenna has a very good reconfigurability. Results prove that the feasibility of the plasma Yagi antenna can be used on AIS base station of Ships’ Routeing waters. It can promote the communication and capability of maritime supervision in Ships’ Routeing waters.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) offers automatic traffic control and collision avoidance services to the maritime transportation sector worldwide. Because AIS lacks security mechanisms, it is vulnerable to misuse and exploitation by unlawful adversaries (e.g. sea-pirates, terrorists, smugglers). To address the security issues of the AIS, in an earlier paper [1], we proposed the deployment of a Maritime Certificate-less Identity-Based (mIBC) public-key cryptography infrastructure that enhances AIS with on-demand anonymity, authentication, and encryption capabilities. In this paper we address implementation aspects of that infrastructure. In particular, we propose to use the Sakai-Kasahara Identity-Based Encryption (IBE) approach to implement the mIBC infrastructure, following the IEEE 1363.3-2013 standard for Identity-Based Cryptography.

This paper proposes an estimation method for ships on collision courses taking crash astern maneuvers based on a new potential area of water (PAW) for maneuvering. A crash astern maneuver is an emergency option a ship can take when exposed to the risk of a collision with other ships that have lost control. However, lateral forces and yaw moments exerted by the reversing propeller, as well as the uncertainty of the initial speed and initial yaw rate, will move the ship out of the intended stopping position landing it in a dangerous area. A new PAW for crash astern maneuvers is thus introduced. The PAW is developed based on a probability density function of the initial yaw rate. Distributions of the yaw rates and speeds are analyzed from automatic identification system (AIS) data in Madura Strait, and estimated paths of the maneuvers are simulated using a mathematical maneuvering group model.

The article presents analysis of the automatic radar plotting aid (ARPA) and automatic identification system (AIS) indications reliability performed on the base of the results of measurements conducted on merchant vessels at sea. In the first part of the article titled “Comparative study of the accuracy of AIS and ARPA indications. Part 1. Accuracy of the CPA indications” are described: vessels on which the tests were carried out, AIS and radar equipment installed on them, observed meeting situations and accuracy of the CPA indication. In this article are discussed, for the same meeting situations, accuracy of the information on true course and true speed of the opposite vessel presented by ARPA and AIS and correlation between this accuracies and errors of the CPA indication.

We demonstrate the value in previously disregarded parameters in AIS data, and present a novel way of quickly identifying and characterizing potentially safety critical situations for vessels with a properly configured AIS transponder. The traditional approach of studying (near) collision situations, is through vessel conflict zones, based on vessel location and speed from low resolution AIS data. Our approach utilizes the rate of turn parameter in the AIS signal, at maximum time resolution. From collision investigation reports it is often seen that prior to or at collision navigators perform frenetic rudder actions in the hope to avoid collision in the last second. These hard maneuverings are easily spotted as non-normal rate of turn signals. An identified potential critical situation may then be further characterized by the occurring centripetal acceleration a vessel is exposed to. We demonstrate the novelty of our methodology in a case study of a real ship collision. As the rate of turn parameter is directly linkable to the navigator behavior it provides information about when and to what degree actions were taken. We believe our work will therefore inspire new research on safety and human factors as a risk profiles could be derived based on AIS data.

Detection of small crafts/targets, in particular, sailing yachts with the ship's radar is not always possible. Radar reflectors are used to improve their detection. The AIS (Automatic Identification System) transmits position, motion vector and identification signals of a vessel to other ships and VTS (Vessel Traffic Services) centers . This system significantly increases the possibility to detect small crafts. The paper presents results of comparative study of using information from the Automatic Identification System and from radar to determine the accuracy of tracking the position and motion vector of ships in the Gulf of Gdansk. Possibilities and limitations of the AIS are also presented.

This paper proposes an approach for identifying and characterizing shipping routes using information contained in Automatic Identification System messages broadcasted by ships and recorded by the coastal Vessel Traffic Service centre. The approach consists of using historical Automatic Identification System data to build a graph, where nodes are cells of a grid covering the geographical area being studied and the weights of directional edges are inversely related to ship movements between cells. Based on this graph, the Dijkstra algorithm is used to identify a potential safe route, assumed to be the most used route by ships between two locations. A second graph is created simultaneously, with the same nodes and edges, but with edge weights equal to the average speed of transitions between cells, thus allowing the determination of the average speed profile for any possible path within the graph. The proposed approach is applied to two scenarios: an approach to the port of Lisbon and the entry through the fairway to a RO-RO terminal in the port of Setubal in Portugal.

Currently, Maritime safety is the best issue in the world. International Maritime organization (IMO) have recommended FSA methodology to enhance maritime safety. In this paper, the research conducted in the Malacca Strait. Malacca Strait is an area that has a high risk for shipping navigation. Many accidents occur in the area are like collision, fire, grounding and so on. Therefore a study on improving safety in this area is very important. it is to produce an output that can be used to provide input to the master and multiple stakeholders to improve safety on board at the time of sailing. In this study, AIS is used as a data source. Sea condition data collected actual traffic through the Automatic Identification System (AIS) equipment installed at Kobe University, Japan, and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Johor, Malaysia. The data is applied to define a method with the help of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

This paper presents the results of the Smart technologies application to the synthesis of MIMO-systems in oil and gas industry. In particular, there is considered a multidimensional multiply connected system for gas distillation process control through a distillation column with regulators configured on the basis of Smart-technologies – clonal selection algorithm (CLONALG) of an artificial immune system (AIS).
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki zastosowania inteligentnych technologii do syntezy systemów MIMO w przemyśle petrochemicznym. W szczególności rozważany jest wielowymiarowy układ sterowania procesem destylacji gazu w kolumnie destylacyjnej z regulatorami skonfigurowanymi na podstawie tzw. inteligentnych technologii – algorytmu doboru klonów (CLONALG) sztucznego układu immunolgicznego (AIS).

Opis:
The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an important maritime safety device, which is populous in inland rivers. Compared with that in open sea, the Package Error Rate (PER) of AIS in inland river has increased sharply due to its complex environment. With the help of hardware in loop simulation, it is possible to make statistical calculation on the PER under a given field strength and describe the data by quadratic rational fraction. Meanwhile, in the three dimensional software environments, the signal field strength is able to be calculated by the ray tracking method, which exhausts all the possible propagation paths, including direct way, reflection, diffractions, and the other medium attenuation matters. Beyond that, in the model, the propagation geography information in inland rivers is required to be simplified in some way, or the computation of the ray tracking is too hard to get. The paper set the Changjiang Wuhan channel as the field testing region, and all the deviations are less than 5% in sunny weather, which proves the method accurate and effective.

Opis:
The traffic density is a basic characteristic of marine traffic for some navigational area. In the case of narrow channels such as Strait of Split (Splitska vrata), apart from the traffic density, the number of simultaneous ship passages is also important as well as ships characteristics. Based on such data, additional navigational safety guidelines and regulations may be planned for the observed area. The purpose of this research is to determine the number of simultaneous ship passages via Strait of Split for a certain period of time. Collected AIS data in SPNMEA format was decoded by AIS Decoder online program to csv file. For five randomly selected days in the summer period, based on AIS data, the number of simultaneous ship passages was determined and ships information presented.

Optimal ship tracks computed via the VISIR model are compared to tracks recorded by the Automatic Identification System (AIS). The evaluation regards 43 tracks in the Southern Atlantic Ocean, sailed during 2016-2017 by different bulk carriers. In this exercise, VISIR is fed by wave analysis fields from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS). In order to reproduce vessel speed loss in waves, a new methodology is developed, where kinematic information from AIS is fusioned with wave information from CMEMS. Resulting VISIR tracks are analyzed along with AIS tracks in terms of their topological features and duration. The tracks exhibit quite diverse topological shapes, including orthodromic, loxodromic, and other paths with complex and dynamic diversions. The distribution of AIS to VISIR track durations is analyzed in terms of several parameters, such as the AIS to VISIR track length and their Fréchet distance. Model features of VISIR affecting the results are discussed and future developments suggested by the results are outlined.
