Opis:
The symbolism of flowers has always been a significant part of cultures around the world due to their functional meaning in daily life. From their decorative to their aromatic role, flowers and their symbolic meaning trigger emotions, convey wishes and represent thoughts that can not be explicitly expressed. In this regard, an elaborate language based on flower symbolism was developed in many societies, to convey clear messages to the recipient. However, in some cultural contexts, although the flower symbolism has social connotations, it is mainly associated with economic references. As flowers are an essential precursor to fruits, they are inevitably a source of expectations and hence foster a set of hopes and dreams, which can ultimately lead to excitement or disappointment.Through a discourse analysis based on factional narratives, this article explores the parameters through which the symbolism of bifaceted meaning of flowers fictionalises a space that refers to the social reality. This association between the fictional world and social reference has highlighted that writing can profoundly be a means of representing social events through the rhetoric of symbolism. Through a sociological reading approach, this paper aims to analyse how the symbolism of flowers informs the rhetoric of disenchantment that can foster a content-based pedagogy in language learning where silencing practices engender imagery to exercise the freedom of expression.

The paper aims at investigating the idea of a symbolic nature of sounds and its implications for in the acquisition of foreign language phonology. Firstly, it will present an overview of universal trends in phonetic symbolism, i.e. non-arbitrary representations of a phoneme by specific semantic criteria. Secondly, the results of a preliminary study on different manifestations of sound symbolism including emotionally-loaded representations of phonemes and other synaesthetic associations shall be discussed. Finally, practical pedagogical implications of sound symbolism will be explored and a number of innovative classroom activities involving sound symbolic associations will be presented.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the ways in which religious symbols are present in non-religious spheres of contemporary European culture. It is widely known that, as a result of secularization, religious symbolic language is no longer present in the public sphere and culture of contemporary European societies in the same way as it was in the past. At first sight, it seems that it has lost its relevance for other fields of culture as well as for everyday communication, and that religion has become a relatively closed system of communication. However, more thorough investigation shows that various religious symbols are widely used in many fields of secular culture. The fundamental question concerning religious symbols is whether and, if yes, in what particular way, they change their meaning as a result of being used in non-religious cultural activity. What is the reason that previously marginalized religious symbols reappear in secular culture? It may be hypothesized that religious symbols are not culturally contingent, but they constitute a universal dimension of culture and are deeply rooted in the human mind.

Strawberries were the fruit that the Modernists and Modernism were very fond of. It thus should not be a surprise that strawberries also feature in Modernist prose texts of Katherine Mansfield. Although they make their appearance only in a couple of stories, and then merely for a brief moment, they should not by any means be treated as mere tiny blots belonging to the background. For when we take a closer look at them it turns out that, as is usually the case with Mansfield’s short stories, there is more to it than meets the eye. Seemingly unimportant, often unnoticed and therefore frequently underestimated, this small, sweet, red and fragrant fruit makes a significant statement in every text it is mentioned.

Opis:
This article concerns two problems. The first is baptismal symbolism, and the second liturgical mystagogy understood as a constant initiation of the faithful into the understanding of the faith. Hence, the first part shows the assumptions of contemporary liturgical mystagogy, which calls for an appropriate approach to the baptism of children on the part of both pastors and parents. The baptismal rites, rich in symbolism, can be helpful in this respect. The second part of the paper provides an explanation of baptismal symbolism. It discusses the importance of baptism, the presence of the community, the questioning of the parents and the godparents, the significance of the church door, the name of the child, the sign of the cross, the procession to the chancel, the exorcism, the blessing of water, the renunciation of evil, the profession of faith, the matter and form of the sacrament, the anointing with chrism, the putting on of a white garment, the giving of a lighted candle and the procession to the altar.

The author focuses her attention on the aspects of folk rituals using hair, including the symbolic meaning of manipulation of hair, such as combing, pinning and cutting. In addition to determining social status, the important role in the ritual’s calendar and family life, hair has been associated with broadly understood symbolism and various meanings. The purpose of the text is to also show the relationship between the belief function and the appearance of the hair and the actions by which they are affected.

Opis:
Lilac has been the symbol of Russian gardens for ages, gradually becoming their inseparable attribute. The Russian word ‘’ (lilac) is derived from Greek ‘syrinx’ meaning a pipe (musical instrument). This name has also its own mythic explanation of double i.e. Greek and Scandinavian origin. Since the 19th century lilac has been attracting attention of many Russian poets and painters, becoming the source of their inspiration. The most eminent painter of lilac is Mikhail Vrubel, whose “portraits” of lilac: Lilac bush () , 1900) and Lilac (, 1900 and 1901) are magical, ambiguous and  stunning with their enchanting, iridescent colours and the atmosphere of mystery. Vrubel gives his paintings a profound philosophical meaning playing with the ambivalence of his subject. This subject is the transformation of Chaos into Cosmos. The same attitude can be observed in the poems of A. Blok, K. Balmont, I. Annenski. In each of the iconic representations of lilac analysed by the author of this article, lilac obtains the status of a symbol as an artistic sign with a complex semantic structure and definite, melancholically sensual emotional quality. In this way lilac becomes an iconic announcement with a multi-level structure for Russian symbolists. The process of perception of poetry and paintings becomes the way a realibus ad realiora, from matter to feeling. It leads to the conclusion that Russian artists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries saw in lilac the sign of a higher, better world, where all its elements (real, mystic, mythic and fantastic) coexist, the sign of yearning for the idea of harmony.

The oral biblical exegesis and oral transmission, or the unwritten tradition, represent pillars in the circulation of texts and ideas since the very dawn of Christianity, both in orthodox and heterodox circles. Namely, this vast topic encompasses the concepts related to the concepts of the written sources and the spoken word, and their interrelation, and, furthermore, to the symbolism of the ear, Logos, and secret teachings (arcana). The role and impact of the oral transmission will be examined on the example of the Bogomils, and this paper will re-assess the importance and function of the oral transmission of the Bogomil doctrine. Therefore, the Biblical exegesis will also be analyzed in that key, and the question of the Bogomil preachers will be addressed. More broadly, the oral transmission of the Bogomil teachings can be observed as one of the modi operandi that the Bogomils resorted to in the aim of propagating their ideas, as well as possibly their interpretative manner to approach the Scriptural material and parables.

The boar and the bear lived side by side, and this common presence – both the real one, connected with their similar habitats, and the proximity in the sphere of material and spiritual culture – could lead to the features of both these animals merging in one image, that is in the Sokola coat of arms, in which one can see a half-boar and half-bear.

European integration impacts the perception and symbolism of space, and the resultant transformation seems to be linked to changes in memory. Both of these factors belong to the deep, although not always conscious effects of integration. Memory is rarely stable. The biographical events in an individual’s life, along with changes in the meaning of the broad European space, affect the symbolism of a local space as developed in both individual and collective memory. This also transforms the memory and symbolism of even the most intimate experience of a local space-and again, this takes place both in the memory of individuals and in the collective memory of local communities. Its form greatly depends on the variety of agents involved in public discourse, such as the media and the arguments made by political and religious leaders. One of the factors involved is the change in social and cultural perspective created by the expanded area of easily accessible space, which in today’s EU includes countries once separated by physically experienced borders. In the article I will attempt to identify and describe the mechanisms involved in transforming the symbolism of local space. One of the issues addressed will be the confrontation between advancing cosmopolitanism and the rise of attachment to localities.

For thousands of years, we can observe that the donkey, an animal commonly used in the Mediterranean world and Asia as a beast of burden, has a rich symbolism associated with religion. It was ridden by ancient heroes, prophets, patriarchs and gods. In the Judaic and Christian traditions, there are positive aspects of this animal that are associated with messianic symbolism. The donkey was also used in the legal practices of the ancient East. Phrase to kill a donkey used in the existing in the second millennium BC in the present territory of Syria and Iraq, the city and the country of Mary, has become a technical term meaning the conclusion of the covenant.
Dosiadali go starożytni bohaterowie, prorocy, patriarchowie i bogowie.

The vast majority of the papers on populism describe this political phenomenon as one which is very difficult to explain and to analyze due to its discursive versatility and behavioural chameleonism. Furthermore, I would argue that the term populism covers more political and social realities than one single term would normally concentrate from a semantic point of view. I focus more over the psychological roots of populism which can be observed in the political symbolic field. In that manner, I consider that political symbolic, as part of the behavioural theory, can be a better tool for unveiling the populist discourse than the usual techniques of political analysis.

The article deals with national and transnational symbolism of birds in the sphere of the soul in Polish folk culture against the Slavic background. The study aims to observe the variety of the imagery in the post-mortal existence of souls and their relation with the living. The analysis shows that there are cultural differences on the level of bird species. The symbolic meanings of birds are based on the characteristics of their species (the size, appearance, lifestyle, colour of plumage, nesting place) and the cultural context (both inherited and developed locally).

The paper examines a special place that the characters of Ophelia and Narcissus, so closely connected with the motif of water, occupy in the poetic imaginarium of George Rodenbach. What we deal with here is an unhealthy obsession within which two characters of literature and mythology, unhappily in love, are presented as two alter egos of the poet himself. An endless sequence of images associating water with death reveals the fascination and trepidation of the symbolist, who uses the Opheliac depths and Narcissus’s water mirror as a reflection of different states of his soul.

“Onomatopoeic formations are never organic elements of a linguistic system,” appears in Saussure’s General linguistics, “besides, their number is much smaller than is generally supposed”, he adds (Saussure 1959, 69). Consequently, these linguistic elements have been neglected ever since then in linguistic studies. In my paper, I would like to show that these elements can lead us to detecting basic linguistic phenomena that have not been studied yet, and to present an approach to a linguistic system that does not exclude onomatopoeic formations, but is based on them. The starting point of my research was the large number of Hungarian verbs with an expressive sonority and meaning. In the case of the onomatopoeic verbs we can see a similarity between meaning and form, but not in the case of other verbs whose sound form is expressive and motivated, but the motivation can only be perceived in the light of other verbs with similar sound form and meaning. Since the beginning of the 20th century, Hungarian grammars have referred to these two groups of verbs as differing, but related to each other. However, the relation between sound form and meaning in the two cases differs, and their place in the grammatical system is still unsettled. It is mainly these verbs that are impossible to fit into the traditional morphologies of language, though not only. If we take on a different approach then the traditional one, we can see that the grammar systems prevailing, are by far not the only ones that seem suitable. I will present correlations between elements of the verb structure like the number of syllables, word-ending, sound structure and word meaning, based on a study of Hungarian verbs. These principles only fit into another kind of morphology than the traditional ones, similarly to the verbs that they are based upon.

The object of this paper is to analyze the Koranic symbolism of water in the light of the Islamic conception of nature as well as God’s attributes and His attitude towards His creatures. According to the Qur’an, God made from water every living thing. Rain, rivers, seas, streams and springs are signs and manifestations of God’s existence in the universe. Water is also regarded as one of God’s favors on His servants. There are numerous Koranic verses relating water as a vehicle of penalty both in the wordly life and in the hereafter. In the Koranic eschatological descriptions, it also appears as God’s reward for believers in paradise.

Opis:
The present article proves that Augustine, explaining in Enarrationes in Psalmos the texts of Psalms, does not treat references occurig in them, to the moon merely as a part of the descriptions of beauty of the created world, but tries to perceive in it a hidden meaning, the disclosure of which serves the interpreation of different theological questions. For the bishop of Hippo, the moon is a metaphor of God the Creator, of Christ, of the Church and of the human being. With reference to God the Creator, the moon is to remind Christians, that God creating everything as being good and beautiful, He himself is the Good and the Beauty. Furthermore, the motive of the moon is to point to God’s self-sufficiency, his freedom and independence. The moon as metaphor of Christ, in turn, allows to perceive in Him the true God who, through the event of Incarnation, revealed to the human being the eternal plan of salvation. The ecclesiological dimension of the symbolism of the moon, however, introduces the concept of the beginnings of the Church, points out to its persecutions and to the presence of sinful people in it. What’s more, the moon-Church is the mystical Body of Christ and Christi s its Head. It is, furthermore, a Glorious Church that will be reigning with Christ for ever. Through the antropological dimension of the figure of the moon, Augustine exposes to the listeners of his sermons the truth about human fragility, corporality and mortality, moral inconstancy and a necessity for gaining more and more perfection with the suport of the Holy Spirit. The moon is salso to direct the human thinking at the truth of resurrection.

Opis:
This paper deals with the history of the development of canon tables in early medieval manuscripts. The author concentrates on the role of the architectural decoration of canon tables. This type of decoration was very important for the development of iconography, especially in Byzantium, where one can observe the tendency to expand the role of calligraphy on the cost of illumination. Canon tables were instrumental in propagation of the type of composition (originating probably from astronomical codices of late antiquity) in which text is enclosed by an architectural frame. For the canon tables created after the 10th century characteristic is transition from tectonic to ornamental treatment of the frame. The motifs of antithetic animals (usually birds) and pair of trees placed next to the arcades are obligatory elements of the frame. This pattern deriving from the canon tables compositions belongs to the most widespread schemes in medieval illuminations.

Opis:
The book Twórczość Leśmiana w kręgu filozoficznej myśli symbolizmu rosyjskiego written by Sobieska is a pioneering attempt at combining a discussion on the literary output of the author of Dziejba leśna with the reflection stemming from the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church. The book, notwithstanding its shortcomings and self-imposed limitations, comprehensively discusses views and opinions hitherto unknown to the Polish reader, introduces and explains the context of the findings of such thinkers as Soloviov or Biely, compares texts written by Russian symbolists with Leśmian’s poems. Sobieska categorizes the problem issues into subsequent thematic ranges (epiphany insight into the nature of being, musicality and the notion of poetical metre, creative imagination, mystical femininity) in order to point at potential sources of the recontextualization of Leśmian’s poetical sensitivity. The findings, being an example of classic comparatistic studies, have been enhanced by iconological and musicological observations as well as by some additional guiding elements facilitating the understanding of Orthodox theology. The present sketch discusses the book and is complemented with a polemics with some of its methodological solutions.

The issue of the harnessing of symbols by politicians is essential, because it ex-plains to what extent government representatives are able to make an impact on society and how much identifying with specific symbols can be viewed as an acceptance of political myths and ideas by voters. This topic is particularly valid in the light of upcom-ing local government elections. Time caesuras of the analyzed subject will be limited by the duration of the election campaign that took place in 2011, from the announcement by the President of the Repub-lic of Poland to the start of electoral silence. Territorial coverage of the undertaken re-search will apply to constituency No. 25: the Gdańsk constituency which covers the following counties: Gdańsk, Kwidzyn, Malbork, Nowy Dwór, Starogard, Sztum, Tczew and cities with county rights like Gdańsk and Sopot. The intention of this article is to indicate the manner and intensity in which the symbol of “Solidarity” was used during the parliamentary election campaign by candi-dates from the Gdańsk constituency as well as to answer if, and to what extent it contrib-uted towards their electoral success.
