The purpose of this article is to describe the role of implementing the principles of sustainable development in tourism industry and show how tourism development depends on the state of the natural environment. The authors analyse the characteristics of sustainable development in tourism, describe the implementation of sustainable development through international declarations and legal acts, and track trends in modern tourism. They also discuss the importance of cross-border tourism from the perspective of sustainable development and the role of environmental education in sustainable tourism development. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of the laws of nature for sustainable human existence.

The article presents the issues related to travel and tourism, the development of this branch of service, and attempts to create alternative solutions to reduce this phenomenon’s dysfunctions. The introduction outlines the nineteenth century beginnings of tourism on the British Isles, including the setup of the first travel agency and the effects of increasing number of participants of mass tourism. The second section discusses the evolution from traveller to the tourist consumer of the commercial offer and social and environmental impacts of these changes. The third part presents the attempts to create alternatives to mass tourism with the adaptation of the rules resulting from the concept of sustainable development, and stressed the need for pro-environmental education.
W artykule przedstawiono problemy związane z podróżami oraz turystyką, rozwojem tej gałęzi usług oraz próby tworzenia alternatywnych rozwiązań ograniczających dysfunkcyjność tego zjawiska. We wstępie zarysowano XIX-wieczne początki turyzmu na Wyspach Brytyjskich z powstaniem pierwszego biura podróży oraz skutki wzrastającej liczby uczestników turystyki masowej. Następnie omówiono ewolucję: od podróżnika do konsumenta turystycznej oferty komercyjnej oraz skutki społeczne i środowiskowe tych przemian. W części trzeciej przedstawiono próby tworzenia rozwiązań alternatywnych do turystyki masowej z adaptacją zasad wynikających z koncepcji rozwoju zrównoważonego oraz wskazano na konieczność edukacji prośrodowiskowej.

The main purpose of the article is to show the supply of enotourism in Poland as part of sustainable tourism. An appropriate management of this supply can help consumers enjoy leisure time for the benefit of their health and in harmony with nature. It can also contribute to the conservation and restoration of local cultural heritage. Sustainable tourism is closely related to sustainable development, so the first part of the article focuses on explaining the concept of sustainable development. In the next enotourism is presented as part of sustainable development. While some authors treat winery tourism as part of culinary tourism, it is usually shown in terms of its regional, historical and economic characteristics, which makes it sustainable. The last part is devoted to the management enotourism in Poland and provides detailed information about the supply of services offered by Polish vineyards.

Tourism is mostly concentrated in protected areas. The highest level of protection of nature and landscape represents national parks, which are important biosphere reserves. Tourism in national parks has to be developed with a thoughtful and considerate approach to the environment and in accordance with sustainable development values, which are based on economic, social and environmental principles. The object of the study is the Tatra National Park, whose task is to preserve and protect the original conditions of the natural environment in the protected landscape and utilise its potential for recreational, medical and sport purposes. In the last decade, the territory of the national park has been undergoing major innovations associated with the construction and improvement of tourism facilities. The aim of the article is to examine the sustainability of tourism in the Tatra National Park based on indicators developed by UNWTO (2004) in terms of visitors with an emphasis on social and environmental aspects.

The article focuses on working out sustainable tourism indicators taking into account national priorities of Ukraine. Among national priorities of tourism in Ukraine the varied and diverse natural healing resources (mineral waters, peloids (medical mud), climate, rump of estuaries and lakes, seawater, ozocerite, bischofite) and resort territories are the leading ones. Assessment of the state of natural healing resources and resort territories is suggested as a national priority among nine mandatory problem areas according to UNWTO recommendations for monitoring in observatories of sustainable tourism.

The main goal of the article is to attempt to summarize scientific research into sustainable tourism which has so far been completed in Poland and especially the presentation of different ways in which this concept is understood, the identification of principal research problems within this field and the identification of new paths of scientific research. The study was conducted using the desk research method and the comparative analysis method. Research had shown that Polish scientific centers had sees a rise in the number of researchers looking into sustainable tourism. This achievement is still not very extensive and presents numerous research gaps (substantive, empirical, methodological and practical). On account of the complexity of this study subject a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, systemic and strategic, model approach to the problems of sustainable tourism is needed.

The aim of the article is to raise and discuss, according to contemporary research findings, the most important reservations regarding the concept of sustainable (harmonious) tourism development as well as the barriers to the implementation of its principles in practice. The author points to ambiguities in the interpretation of the term ‘sustainability’ and, as a result, the methodological implications for tourism studies including the problem of measuring and evaluating ‘sustainability’ in tourism development processes. In addition it considers the social hostility towards limiting consumption in tourism and the growing climatic, economic and political instability at tourism destinations hindering its implementation of the concept of sustainability. In conclusion, the author proposes a new paradigm for sustainable tourism which does not directly relate to the imperative of harmonious interconnection between differing development goals and values in tourism.

Celem rozważań jest przedstawienie teoretycznego, długookresowego modelu turystyki zrównoważonej, który spełniałby warunki: kompletności, uniwersalności, jednoznaczności i prostoty. Podstawą konstrukcji modelu było przyjęcie, m.in. na podstawie studiów literaturowych, kilku głównych założeń oddających istotę turystyki zrównoważonej. Sam model został zaś zbudowany przy wykorzystaniu metody wnioskowania dedukcyjnego z przyjętych założeń. Do jego prezentacji zastosowano graficzny obraz funkcji matematycznej oraz zapis formalny. Artykuł składa się z trzech części. W pierwszej, mającej charakter wprowadzający, przedstawiono w skróconej formie, przegląd głównych koncepcji turystyki zrównoważonej. W drugiej części zaprezentowano, wybrane z literatury przedmiotu, próby oddania istoty turystyki zrównoważonej przy wykorzystania ujęcia modelowego. Z kolei trzecia, zasadnicza część artykułu zawiera proponowany teoretyczny, długookresowy model turystyki zrównoważonej. Obejmuje ona w szczególności graficzną formę modelu, a także opis: celów budowy modelu, jego głównych założeń, zastosowanych zmiennych, modelowych warunków równowagi i jej zakłóceń, prezentację czynników oddziaływują-cych na zmienne niezależne, jak również możliwości oraz ograniczenia wykorzystania modelu.
An aim of deliberations is to present a theoretical long-term model of sustainable tourism that would have met the prerequisites of completeness, universality, explicitness, and simplicity. A ground for construction of the model was an adoption, among other things on the basis of literature studies, of a few basic assumptions showing the essence of sustainable tourism. The very model was built with the use of the method of deductive reasoning on the grounds of adopted assumptions. For its presentation, there were used a graphical picture of the mathematical function and a formal record. The article consists of three parts. In the first one, of the introductory nature, there are presented, in an abbreviated form, a review of the main concepts of sustainable tourism. In the second part, there are presented, selected from the subject literature, attempts to convey the essence of sustainable tourism with the use of the model approach. In turn, the third, the essential part of the article, includes the proposed theoretical long-term model of sustainable tourism. It comprises, in particular, a graphical form of the model as well as a description of the objectives of model construction, its main assumptions, applied variables, model terms of equilibrium and disturbances thereof, presentation of the factors affecting independent variables as well as the opportunities and constraints of model use.

Artykuł porusza kwestię zrównoważonej turystyki w Polsce i na Słowacji, podkreślając jej znaczenie, a także cele i zadania. Sytuację turystyki w Polsce przedstawiono w odniesieniu do zagadnień gospodarki przestrzennej, podczas gdy przykład słowacki koncentruje się głównie na znaczeniu dziedzictwa kulturowego. Oba powiązane ze sobą aspekty uznano za kluczowe dla rozwoju zrównoważonej turystyki. Wskazując na zauważalnie niezrównoważony charakter współczesnej turystyki, autorzy podkreślili pilną potrzebę odwoływania się do argumentów etycznych i aksjologicznych w procesie wdrażania zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju i ładu przestrzennego do turystyki.
The present article raises the question of sustainable tourism in Poland and Slovakia, highlighting its significance, as well as its objectives and tasks. The situation of tourism in Poland is presented in relation to the issues of spatial economy, whereas Slovak example concentrates mainly on the importance of cultural heritage. Both interrelated aspects were considered crucial for the development of sustainable tourism. Pointing to the noticeably unsustainable character of modern tourism, the authors emphasized the urgent need to refer to ethical and axiological arguments in the process of implementing the principles of sustainable development and spatial order to tourism.

Opis:
Indicators of sustainable tourism are used for the multidimensional evaluating of destination development. The application of indicators must be custom-made to each destination and depends on various factors, including data availability, type of destination, stakeholders’ contribution and tourism development objectives. In Slovakia, there is little attention to the measurement and evaluation of sustainable tourism development. The aim of this paper is to examine the availability and limitations of data for the measurement of sustainable tourism indicators in protected areas of Slovakia. The paper deals with the availability and relevance of the data of the official statistical unit, tourism-related ministries, destination management organisations, nature conservation agencies and other institutions in assessing the sustainable development of tourism. In order to arrive at an impression of which data are available, we conduct literature-based research and comparative analyses. The article deals with the availability of data for measuring sustaina- ble development of tourism and its limitations in Slovak protected areas.
Wskaźniki zrównoważonej turystyki są wykorzystywane do wielowymiarowej oceny rozwoju miejsc docelowych. Zastosowanie wskaźników musi być dostosowane do każdego miejsca docelowego i zależy od różnych czynników, w tym dostępności danych, rodzaju miejsca docelowego, wkładu zainteresowanych stron i celów rozwoju turystyki. Na Słowacji niewiele uwagi poświęca się pomiarowi i ocenie zrównoważonego rozwoju turystyki. Celem opracowania jest zbadanie dostępności i ograniczeń danych potrzebnych do pomiaru wskaźników zrównoważonej turystyki na chronionych obszarach Słowacji. Opracowanie dotyczy dostępności i przydatności danych oficjalnej jednostki statystycznej, ministerstw związanych z turystyką, organizacji zarządzających miejscem docelowym, agencji ochrony przyrody i innych instytucji w ocenie zrównoważonego rozwoju turystyki. Aby zorientować się, które dane są dostępne, prowadzone są badania literaturowe i analizy porównawcze. Opracowanie dotyczy dostępności danych do pomiaru zrównoważonego rozwoju turystyki i jej ograniczeń na słowackich obszarach chronionych.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest ocena skutków oddziaływania turystyki na środowisko przyrodnicze w Bieszczadzkim Parku Narodowym, jak również sprawdzenie, czy funkcjonowanie obszarów chronionych w Bieszczadach oraz realizacja zadań ochronnych znajduje swoje odzwierciedlenie w podnoszeniu świadomości ekologicznej zwiedzających. Wyniki przeprowadzonych badań wskazują, że możliwy do osiągnięcia jest kompromis pomiędzy zachowaniem zasad ochrony przyrody, a oczekiwaniami i potrzebami zwiedzających.
The purpose of this article is to evaluate the effects of tourism on the natural environment in the Bieszczady National Park, as well as to check whether the functioning of protected areas in the Bieszczady Mountains and the implementation of protection is reflected in the increasing environmental awareness of the visitors. The results of this study indicate that it is possible to achieve a balance between the principles of conservation and the needs and expectations of the visitors.

The conception of sustainable development applies to all spheres of human activities since natural environment, which undergoes changes all the time, constitutes space of life for human race. The paper presents the issue of the sustainable tourism which corresponds with the concept of the sustainable development. The work concentrates on the theoretical analysis of the sustainable tourism, often treated as a tool of accomplishment of the sustainable development or the tool of the development of tourism itself. The article is an attempt to state the basic rules of the sustainable tourism on the so-called rural health resort areas. The work shows what kind of tourism can be developed on the analysed rural areas, at the same time being in harmony with the concept of the sustainable tourism. In the paper the analysis of the national and foreign literature from the domain of the concept of the sustainable tourism, including rural areas, and the observation of the chosen indicators of the sustainable development of health resorts villages are presented. The concept of the sustainable development arose in the 1970s and it was an expression of the critical reaction to the growing interference in natural and social and cultural resources. The concept of the sustainable development is not opposite to the possibilities of economic growth, on condition that the pace of the reproduction of the environmental resources is not slower than the pace of the usage of these resources. The theoretical basis of the usage of the rules of the sustainable development in the world literature started to be seen at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The document „Agenda 21 for Travelling and Tourism Economy” turned out to be fundamental for the development of the concept of the sustainable tourism. The practical use of the concept of the sustainable development in the rural areas economy needs devising indicators and indexes characterizing this development. The indicators are divided into: indicators of environmental pressure (danger, stress), indicators of condition (quality) of the environment and indicators of preventive activities. The economic significance of the tourism lies in its positive influence on the different departments of the economy, including agriculture. One of the more important impacts is stopping the migration of people from the rural areas.

Sustainable tourism, considered as a model for the whole tourism, must include the right to limit development and forms of tourism in the name of preserving exceptional and universal human goods. Essential for the problem of sustainable tourism seems to be the question: Is sustainable tourism adapted to the principles of modern civilization, or is it a model of action that will bring about change in the social space of the present? Keywords relating to the fair and equitable sharing of income from tourism have an overtone both social and political, in the discovery of many revolutionary ideologies. The idea of sustainable tourism indicates the link between the possibilities of meeting the universal need for travel and the need to preserve the world these travels take place. The concept of sustainable tourism seems to be a social ethos that accentuates the kind of solidarity of a man who takes responsibility for his social order and the acquired cultural and natural heritage. An important issue for the tourism development seems to be the nature of orthodoxy sustainability.
Turystyka zrównoważona nie jest uznawana za formę turystyki. Kategoria „turystyki zrównoważonej” jest zatem kategorią aksjologiczną. Wyraża pewien ideał odnoszący się do obrazu społeczeństwa idealnego. Pojęcie „turystyki zrównoważonej” ma status idei uniwersalnej. W modelu turystyki zrównoważonej akcentuje się potrzeby społeczne, ekonomiczne i estetyczne. Nie są one symetrycznie rozłożone między tymi grupami podmiotów. Turystyka zrównoważona traktowana jako model odnoszący się do całej praktyki turystycznej człowieka musi zawierać w sobie przyzwolenie dla ograniczania rozwoju i form turystyki w imię zachowania dóbr wyjątkowych i dla człowieka uniwersalnych. Istotowym dla problematyki turystyki zrównoważonej wydaje sie byc pytanie: Czy turystyka zrównoważona ma dostosować sie do zasad działania obowiązujących we współczesnej cywilizacji czy ma być wzorem działania, który przyniesie zamiany w całej społecznej przestrzeni współczesności? Hasła odnoszące się do sprawiedliwego i równego podziału dochodu z turystyki mają wydźwięk tak społeczny jak i polityczny, odnajdowany w wielu ideologiach rewolucyjnych. Idea turystyki zrównoważonej wskazuje na związek między możliwościami zaspokojenia powszechnej potrzeby podróżowania a konieczności ochrony i zachowania świata, w którym owe podróże się urzeczywistniają. Koncepcja turystyki zrównoważonej wydaje się mieć charakter etosu społecznego akcentującego gatunkową solidarność człowieka biorącego odpowiedzialność za tworzony przez siebie porządek społeczny i otrzymane dziedzictwo kulturowe i przyrodnicze. Istotną kwestią wydaje się być natura owej ortodoksji zrównoważenia.
