Opis:
The possibility of application of naturally existing differences in isotope contents 18O/16O, 2H/1H in waters for investigation of transport and mixing of various waters in the tributary-river system is presented. Experiments carried out on the Bug-Narew rivers-Zegrze Lake and the BugoNarew-Vistula rivers systems have indicated that the hydrogen isotope ratio 2H/1H can be used as an intrinsic tracer of natural mixing processes occurring in rivers. The IRMS methodology was used for isotope ratio measurement of water samples. The degrees of water mixing as a function of distance from the confluence point of rivers were determined. The obtained results indicate that in water systems where the natural differences in ?2H are higher than 5‰ this technique can replace the time-consuming and expensive dye (or radiotracer) dispersion tests for evaluation of pollutant transport in rivers.

In the present work the carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of food products bought in the retail trade in Warsaw is demonstrated. The research was carried out using meat (pork, chicken), hen eggs and honey. These products originated from the conventional and ecological farms. The values of the isotopic ratios are expressed as δ notation and correspond to the international standards (V-PDB for δ13C, and air for δ15N) according to the following general formula: δ(‰) = [(R sample / R standard) – 1] × 1000, where R represents the ratio between the less abundant and more abundant isotopes, in particular 13C/12C and 15N/14N. The results received in our laboratory, were compared with results presented in the literature for similar products. The results of the study show that the N and C stable isotope ratios in the tested products can be applied to verify their authenticity.

Opis:
The objective of this study was to obtain a double and triple labeled human cystatin C (hCC). Another objective was to record sets of 2D and 3D NMR spectra of the hCC dimer (in a solution) using a 700MHz spectrometer. The data obtained during attempts to determine the NMR structure should provide useful information about chemical shifts of amino acid residues. They will certainly accelerate solving the human cystatin C NMR structure. In this paper the main focus is put on triple isotopic labeling, protein overproduction and NMR analysis of hCC. The first two processes lead to obtaining hCC labeled with stable isotopes of carbon ( 13 C), nitrogen ( 15 N) and hydrogen ( 2 H) (double labeled hCC was obtained with a similar method). The obtained protein was later used for the purpose of NMR spectra.

Opis:
Application of stable isotopes in soil studies has improved quantitative evaluation of evaporation and other hydrological processes in soil. This study was carried out to determine the effect of tillage on evaporative loss of water from the soil. Zero tillage and conventional tillage were compared. Suction tubes were installed for soil water collection at the depths 0.15, 0.50, and 1.0 m by pumping soil water with a peristaltic pump. Soil water evaporation was estimated using stable isotopes of water. The mean isotopic composition of the soil water at 0.15 m soil depth were -1.15‰ (d18O) and -0.75‰ (dD) and were highly enriched compared with the isotopic compositions of the site precipitation. Soil water stable isotopes (d18O and dD) were more enriched near the surface under zero tillage while they were less negative down the profile under zero tillage. This suggests an occurrence of more evaporation and infiltration under conventional then zero tillage, respectively, because evaporative fractionation contributes to escape of lighter isotopes from liquid into the vapour phase leading to enrichment in heavy isotopes in the liquid phase. The annual evaporation estimated using the vapour diffusion equation ranges from 46-70 and 54-84 mm year-1 under zero and conventional tillage, respectively, indicating more evaporation under conventional tillage compared with zero tillage. Therefore, to reduce soil water loss, adoption of conservation tillage practices such as zero tillage is encouraged.

The summary of the measurements of CO2 stable isotopic composition emitted from different anthropogenic sources in the Krakow region is presented. The sources are divided into three main groups . high emission (electric and heat power plants), low emission (coal and methane burning in the households) and car traffic (gasoline, diesel and LPG supplied engines equipped and not equipped with catalyst). Presented results include two measurement campaigns made in the years 1995 and 2000. The measurements revealed three well-defined groups with respect to carbon isotope composition (delta13CVPDB): .30.60 plus-minus sign 0.37 per mille (thousand) sign (car traffic) .23.82 plus-minus sign 0.10 per mille (thousand) sign (coal burning) and .51.8 plus-minus sign 1.1per mille (thousand) sign (methane burning). The oxygen isotope composition (delta18OVPDB-CO2) of CO2 varied in a broad range, from ca. .11per mille (thousand) sign to ca. .22 per mille (thousand) sign, the most negative values being observed for coal and methane burning and the most positive for cars equipped with a catalyst. No significant isotopic shift has been observed between two measurement campaigns.

Kaolin deposits, situated ~10 km north-west of Gonabad (eastern Iran), formed by the intrusion of hydrothermal fluids from a granite dyke in the western part of the study area, and the alteration of rhyolite, dacite and rhyodacite related to Eocene volcanism. There are four major kaolin quarries. The rocks in the investigated area are mainly slate, dacite, rhyolite, andesite-trachyandesite, and lithic and felsic tuffs. The mineralogical compositions of the kaolin deposits are dominated by quartz, kaolinite, dickite and illite with minor chlorite, montmorillonite, albite, hematite, pyrite and gypsum. Sanidine and plagioclase crystals in rhyolite-rhyodacite are sericitized and kaolinized. Whole rock chemistry of the kaolin deposits shows high contents of SiO2 and Al2O3. Enrichments of Sr in some samples demonstrate retention of Sr and depletion of Rb, Ba, Ca and K during hydrothermal alteration of sanidine and plagioclase within the volcanic units. The chondrite-normalized rare earth element patterns of the clay deposits show LREE enrichments (La/Lu)cn = 6.75 to 57.74, pointing to kaolinization in low-pH waters. The isotope composition of the kaolin (δ18O ~+5‰) is consistent with formation at isotopic equilibrium with water of hydrothermal/magmatic origin. The mineralogical composition, REE contents and elemental ratios in these deposits suggest provenance of the kaolin deposits mainly from felsic rocks and hydrothermal fluids. The O isotopic character also supports these results.

Oxygen and carbon stable isotope records of two stalagmites from NW Romania provide a continuous climatic record between 14.8 and 5.6 ka BP. The chronology is established by 21 TIMS uranium series ages. Uncertain ties in the isotope chronology range between ±20 and ±100 yr. The δ18 O values are positively correlated with temperature, whereas δ13 C fluctuations suggest changes in soil CO2 production. Lateglacial deposition of both stalagmites started at ~14.8 ka BP. The delta 18 O records subsequently show a slow decline in temperatures until 12.6 ka BP. Three warmer periods with increased soil productivity occurred at 14.5-13.9 ka BP, 13.6-13.2 ka BP, and 12.9-12.6 ka BP. Lower delta 18 O and high δ13 C values between 12.6 and 11.4 (11.7) ka BP in dicate a cold and dry climate during the Younger Dryas (GS-1). During the Early Holocene, three short cold intervals are marked on the δ 18 O profiles at 11.0-10.6, 10.5-10.2 and 9.4-9.1 ka BP. For the remainder of the Holocene sequence, the δ18 O records show less variation between 9 and 7.8 ka BP and gradual warming from 7.6-5.6 ka BP. The speleothem records correlate with the Green land ice core records and with other proxies through out Europe and the North Atlantic region.

We have determined the content of 40Ar* (1.49 nmol/g) and 4He (1.75 nmol/g) in the Baszkówka meteorite by static vacuum mass spectrometry. The radiogenic argon content was calculated from the measured argon spectrum using the equation: 40Ar* = 40Ar - 295.536Ar assuming a potassium content of 680 ppm wgt. We have obtained K/Ar ages of 3.78 Ga for the chondrules and 3.47 Ga for a bulk sample of Baszkówka. A similar 4He content (1.47 nmol/g) but larger 40Ar* (2.32 nmol/g) content was found for the Mt. Tazerzait bulk sample. The K/Ar age of this meteorite on the basis of the K content (732 ppm) is 4.34 Ga. Sulphur isotope analysis of troilite specimens from both meteorites reveals essentially negative delta 34S values: -1.25š0.06o/oo for Baszkówka and -1.18š0.06o/oo for Mt. Tazerzait expressed on the V-CDT scale. This indicates that both chondrites may have a common origin. The oxygen isotope data (delta 18O = 4.88š0.03o/oo and delta 17O = 3.66š0.10o/oo) suggests that Baszkówka belongs to the L chondrites.

Groundwater quality determination and age estimation in a desert landscape of El Golea province situated in the south of Algeria has been investigated in the present research paper. For this regard, 57 water samples were collected from an aquifer composed of two superimposed systems; phreatic and deep continental intercalary (CI) aquifers which are a part of the Northern Sahara Aquifer System (NWSAS). Samples were analyzed to assess the age and water quality using descriptive, multivariate statistics (PCA and HCA) and stable isotopes. It is revealed that more than 71% of the IC points are characterized by a water type (Ca2+, Mg2+) (HCO3 – )2 and more than 83% of the TC samples are defined by a water type (Ca2+, Na+) (HCO3 – , SO4 2 – ) and very high salt ions contents due to the influence of surface water, evaporate leaching and irrigation water return. The isotopic composition of samples of phreatic and CI aquifers shows a clear difference between the two qualities of water. The phreatic aquifer is characterized by the δ18O range from –4.68 to –6.1, whereas δ2H from –47.25 to –59.48 and CI with values of the δ18O range from –5.96 to –7.6, and δ2H range between –53.7 and –65.78 isotopic signature. The unconfined aquifer above IC forms a special case of a mixture of ancient water from deep horizons and recent water strongly enriched from shallow horizon lands.

Opis:
This paper analyses Holocene beachrocks from the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Aqaba to explain the mechanisms that influence the cementation process in these areas. Holocene beachrocks in the Gulf of Aqaba are composed of predominantly terrigenous material derived from erosion of adjacent uplifted Precambrian basement, while the beachrocks in the Arabian Gulf are composed mainly of marine bioclasts and wind-blown siliciclastic sands. The cements of beachrocks in both areas show three textural varieties: (1) isopachous phreatic acicular aragonite; (2) a micritic envelope of high-Mg calcite (HMC); (3) meniscus and gravitational vadose HMC. Radiocarbon dating of beachrock samples from the Arabian Gulf yielded ages from ca. 2300 to 660 yr cal BP whereas samples from the Gulf of Aqaba range in age between 5500 and 2800 yr cal BP. Oxygen isotope values range from 2.6 to 4.4‰ respectively for the Arabian Gulf whereas the Gulf of Aqaba values range from 1.2 to 1.5‰. Carbon isotope values range from 3.2 to 5.9‰ for the Arabian Gulf whereas those from the Gulf of Aqaba range from 3.8 to 4.6‰. The values of δ18OVPDB and δ13CVPDB in the beachrocks of both areas suggest a marine origin. The beachrocks of the Arabian Gulf were precipitated under high evaporation conditions, while beachrocks from the Gulf of Aqaba were precipitated in normal shallow-marine conditions. The mineralogy and textural habits suggest that cementation of these beachrocks started within the shallow-marine phreatic zone.

Opis:
The hydrogen and oxygen isotopes of water and the carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from different aquifers at an industrial site, highly contaminated by organic pollutants representing residues of the former gas production, have been used as natural tracers to characterize the hydrologic system. On the basis of their stable isotope compositions as well as the seasonal variations, different groups of waters (precipitation, surface waters, groundwaters and mineral waters) as well as seasonably variable processes of mixing between these waters can clearly be distinguished. In addition, reservoir effects and infiltration rates can be estimated. In the northern part of the site an influence of uprising mineral waters within the Quaternary aquifers, presumably along a fault zone, can be recognized. Marginal infiltration from the Neckar River in the east and surface water infiltration adjacent to a steep hill on the western edge of the site with an infiltration rate of about one month can also be resolved through the seasonal variation. Quaternary aquifers closer to the centre of the site show no seasonal variations, except for one bore hole close to a for mermill channel and an other bore hole adjacent to a rain water channel. Distinct carbon isotope compositions and concentrations of DIC for these different groups of waters reflect variable influence of different components of the natural carbon cycle: dissolution of marine carbonates in the mineral waters, biogenic, soil-derived CO2 in ground- and surface waters, as well as additional influence of atmospheric CO2 for the surface waters. Many Quaternary aquifer waters have, how ever, distinctly lower δ13CDIC values and higher DIC concentrations compared to those expected for natural waters. Given the location of contaminated groundwaters at this site but also in the industrially well-developed valley out side of this site, the most likely source for the low δ13CDIC values is a biodegradation of anthropogenic organic substances, in particular the taroils at the site.

Opis:
This study investigates the effect of biological and environmental inter-individual variability on the meaning of d18O and d13C values acquired on small carbonated shells. First we present data obtained with a MultiPrep automated carbonate system on small sample sizes of a homogeneous carbonate material: Carrara marble. This demonstrates the capacities of the analytical system to reliably run small amounts of carbonates even down to 10 mg. Then we present two data sets obtained on real fossil samples of various size (sensu number of individual organisms) calibrated against the NBS19 carbonate standard. Both datasets evidence a clear trend of between-biological sample standard deviation increase for both d18O and d13C measurements when the number of pooled specimens per sample decreases. According to the results obtained from a systematic study of a geologically homogeneous sample of coeval fossil Elphidium foraminifera, we estimate that there is 95% of chances to reach between-biological sample standard deviation values higher than 1.02‰ (d18O) and 1.45‰ d13C) based on single-cell measurements. Such values are one order of magnitude higher than the instrumental standard deviations associated with these stable isotope ratios. Conversely, a minimum of 35 (d18O) and 44 (d13C) pooled specimens of Elphidium appears necessary to reach a between-sample standard deviation £ 0.25‰ with a probability of 95%. Such biological intrinsic and irreducible variability between coeval individuals, and thus samples, clearly questions the interest for single-cell analyses, more precisely, for coastal marine species, such as Elphidium, subject to many environmental changes during their life-time. Indeed, strong variations in salinity or temperature, as well as biogenic fractionation, could influence the isotopic composition of an individual specimen. Results might be less problematic for an average community including several tests. This paper underlines uncertainties linked to specific environments in which selected organisms live, especially for paleoceanographic or paleoclimatic reconstruction purposes where secular oxygen and carbon isotope variations typically range from 0.5 to 1.5‰.

Antibiotic therapy in the cystic fibrosis (CF) mouse model has been shown to result in reduced bacterial load of the intestine and significant body mass gain. The effect was suggested to be linked to the improvement of intestinal digestion and absorption. Therefore, we aimed to assess the influence of routinely applied antibiotic therapy in CF patients on fat assimilation. Twenty-four CF patients aged 6 to 30 years entered the study. Inclusion criteria comprised confirmed exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and bronchopulmonary exacerbation demanding antibiotic therapy. Exclusion criteria comprised: antibiotic therapy six weeks prior to the test, liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, oxygen dependency, the use of systemic corticosteroids. In all enrolled CF subjects, 13C-labelled mixed triglyceride breath test (13C MTG-BT) was performed to assess lipid digestion and absorption, before and after antibiotic therapy. Sixteen subjects were treated intravenously with ceftazidime and amikacin, eight patients orally with ciprofloxacin. Cumulative percentage dose recovery (CPDR) was considered to reflect digestion and absorption of lipids. The values are expressed as means (medians). The values of CPDR before and after antibiotic therapy did not differ in the whole studied group [4.6(3.3) % vs. 5.7(5.3) %, p = 0.100] as well as in the subgroup receiving them intravenously [4.6(3.2) % vs. 5.7(5.3) %, p = 0.327] or in that with oral drug administration [4.6(3.4) % vs. 5.7(5.4) %, p = 0.167]. In conclusion, antibiotic therapy applied routinely in the course of pulmonary exacerbation in CF patients does not seem to result in an improvement of fat digestion and absorption.

The history of research into the cementation of the Upper Cretaceous Chalk of the UK is reviewed. Calcite-filled vugs within the shell cavities of terebratulid brachiopods from the Cenomanian Chalk of eastern england have been investigated by cathodoluminesence imaging, staining, electron microprobe and stable isotope analysis. This has provided the first detailed analysis of the geochemistry of the Chalk.s cement. two cement series, suboxic and anoxic, are recognized. Both start with a Mg-rich calcite with positive [delta^13]C values considered to have been precipitated under oxic conditions influenced by aerobic ammonification. The suboxic series is characterized by positive [delta^13]C values that became increasingly so as cementation progressed, reaching values of 3.5[per mil]. Manganese is the dominant trace element in the earlier cement, iron in the later cement. Mn-and Fe-reducing microbes influenced cement precipitation and the trace element and [delta^13]C patterns. The anoxic series is characterized by [delta^13]C values that became increasingly negative as cementation progressed, reaching values of .6.5[per mil]. Trace elements are dominated by iron and manganese. Sulphate-reducing microbes influenced cement precipitation and the trace element and [delta^13]C patterns. Both cement series are related closely to lithofacies and early lithification pre-dating the regional hardening of the Chalk. The suboxic series occurs in chalk which was continuously deposited and contained hematite pigment and limited organic matter. The anoxic series was associated with slow to nil deposition and hardground development inc halks that originally contained hematite pigment but no longer do so, and an enhanced supply of organic matter.

Black limestone, also known as black "marble", was widely used in the Polish small-scale architecture and art of the 17th and 18th centuries. Besides the Devonian limestone from Dębnik near Krakow, also popular were the Netherlandish (Wallonian), Devonian to Carboniferous limestones from the Meuse River and Schelde River valleys. This paper deals with the possibility of identifying the rocks imported to Poland. Macroscopic similarities between the Netherlandish rocks and some Dębnik limestones have been highlighted for the oldest Carmelite quarry in Dębnik, exploiting the best stones. The analyses include: optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with EDS, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence and isotope ratio mass spectrometry (13 C and 18 O stable isotopes). Carboniferous limestones from Netherlands can be identified within and distinguished from the Dębnik limestone in the macroscopic observations. Differences, depending on the varieties, are associated primarily with the presence of white calcite fragments of fossils, calcite veins intersecting the rock in all directions or hardness of the limestones. Deeply black Devonian limestones from Wallonia and Dębnik without macrofossils and calcite veins differ in microscopic observations considering their texture, type of microfossils and inventory of non-carbonate components. The characteristic graying and whitening of the black limestones has also been discussed as a possible feature of rock provenance.

Opis:
This work aims at estimation of the amount of metamorphic fluids which led to the present-day variability of isotopic compositions, ?D and ?18O, in serpentinites from the Gogołów–Jordanów Massif. This goal was achieved by means of a numerical model reproducing selected features of geological environment and a computer application supporting this model. The Gogołów–Jordanów Massif consists of peridotites transformed to a different degree into serpentinites and subject to brittle deformation that produced a complex fracture system. The potential tectonic control on the pattern of the fluid migration paths was investigated using palaeostress analysis based on slickenside measurements. Isotopic analyses were carried out for hydrogen and oxygen from serpentine, oxygen from magnetite, and hydrogen and oxygen from carbonates. The variability of ?D and ?18O in the serpentinites along the modelled migration paths demonstrates that serpentinization of peridotites was caused by fluids derived from at least three sources revealing different isotopic characteristics. Fluids produced during the magmatic-hydrothermal stage played a major role in serpetinization, since they represent approximately 95% of all fluids interacting with the rock. In contrast, oceanic water represents only 1% of fluids involved in serpenti- nization. The calculated mean amount of fluid required for serpentinization of 1 m3 of peridotite is equal to 98 × 104 kg.

Exploitation of lignites, carried out within glaciotectonic structures of Muskau Arch, led to formation of numerous post-minng lakes impacted by Acid Mine Drainage (AMD). . The isotopic analyses decribed in this paper allowed for identification of sources of the dissolved sulphates in the waters of two representative lakes. One of the sources of sulfur isotopes could be oxidation of sulphides (supplied in debris sliding from the slopes of waste dumps, which are surrounding the lakes) in the water column. The fraction of oxygen from water in forming the sulphates vary from about 5% to 25% in the first lake, while in the second it falls within the range 25%-85%. The research confirmed that the main source of sulfates in the lakes is the oxidation of pyrite.

Opis:
Stężenia związków biogennych: OWO, azotu ogólnego i fosforu ogólnego wynosiły średnio odpowiednio 2,31%, 0,21% i 0,031% s.m.o.

Opis:
The regional hardening of the Late Cenomanian to Early Turonian Chalk of the Northern Province of eastern England has been investigated by examining the pattern of trace elements and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes in the bulk calcite of two extensive and stratigraphically adjacent units each 4 to 5 m thick of hard chalk in Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. These units are separated by a sequence, 0.3–1.3 m thick, of variegated marls and clayey marls. Modelling of the geochemistry of the hard chalk by comparison with the Standard Louth Chalk, combined with associated petrographic and geological evidence, indicates that (1) the hardening is due to the precipitation of a calcite cement, and (2) the regional and stratigraphical patterns of geochemical variation in the cement are largely independent of each other and have been maintained by the impermeable nature of the thin sequence of the clay-rich marls that separate them. Two phases of calcite cementation are recognised. The first phase was microbially influenced and did not lithify the chalk. It took place predominantly in oxic and suboxic conditions under considerable overpressure in which the Chalk pore fluids circulated within the units, driven by variations in compaction, temperature, pore fluid pressure and local tectonics. There is evidence in central and southern Lincolnshire of the loss of Sr and Mg-enriched pore fluids to the south during an early part of this phase. The second phase of calcite precipitation was associated with the loss of overpressure in probably Late Cretaceous and in Cenozoic times as the result of fault movement in the basement penetrating the overlying Chalk and damaging the seal between the two chalk units. This greatly enhanced grain pressures, resulting in grain welding and pressure dissolution, causing lithification with the development of stylolites, marl seams, and brittle fractures. Associated with this loss of overpressure was the penetration of the chalk units by allochthonous fluids, rich in sulphate and hydrocarbons, derived probably from the North Sea Basin. Microbial sulphate-reduction under anoxic conditions within these allochthonous fluids has been responsible for dissolving the fine-grained iron and manganese oxides within the chalk, locally enriching the Fe and Mn content of the calcite cement. The possibility is discussed that the pattern of cementation preserved in these regionally hard chalks of Late Cenomanian and Early Turonian age may be different from that preserved in the younger (late Turonian to Campanian) more basinal chalks of eastern England.

Twenty-five surficial sediment samples, collected on board ORV Sagar Kanya during her 199th and 200th cruises along a north-south transect between latitudes 9.69◦N and 55.01◦S, and longitudes 80◦E and 40◦ E were studied for isotopic variations (values of δ18O and δ13C) of the indicator planktonic species Globigerina bulloides. The results indicate that from latitudes 9.69◦N to 15◦ S both these isotopes (δ18O and δ13C) fluctuated significantly. Between latitudes from around 15◦S to 30–35◦S δ18O values steadily increased, whereas δ13C showed a decreasing trend. However, to the south of latitudes 30–35◦S, both isotope values showed a similar response with a gradual increase up to latitude 50◦S, beyond which δ18O continued to increase while δ13C declined. The characteristic patterns of the values of both isotopes indicates that the signatures of different water masses are associated with various frontal systems and/or water masses across the transect. The signature of the Polar Front at around latitude 50◦S shows the specific response of the isotopic values (δ18O and δ13C) of G. bulloides. Such a response beyond 50◦S latitude is ascribable to the general decrease in the ambient temperature, resulting in a continuous increase in δ18O values, while δ13C values decrease as a result of reduced photosynthesis in regions approaching higher latitudes owing to low light penetration. To further corroborate our results, those of many such transects from geographically distinct regions need to be studied for isotopic variations in the calcareous shells of planktonic foraminiferal species. The results have the potential to be used as a proxy to assess the movement of frontal systems in southern high latitude regions.

Stable light isotope ratios (13C/12C and 18O/16O) in fossilteeth provide key archives for understanding ecology of past faunal communities and the evolution of environments during the Plio-Pleistocene. Given the inevitable processes of diagenesis during fossilisation, the integrity of isotopic in formation and the degree of detailed in formation that can be extracted, remain important issues in all fossil studies. The most appropriate tests are those in trinsic to isotopic abundances in ecosystems. They are easier to develop for 13C/12C in savanna environments where large 13C/12C differences exist between C4 tropical grasses and C3 trees and shrubs. Validating 18O/16O ratios in fossil carbonate or phosphate is more difficult, but patterned variability, mainly tracking water-related behaviour, within modern faunal communities has been replicated in several fossil as semblages. The identification of seasonal variation in 13C/12C and 18O/16O along the growth axis of a tooth crown, also applicable in areas composed solely of C3 plants, fills a dual role as a test and for providing data on seasonal amplitude. The results of studies from low- and mid-latitude African sites suggest that isotopic variation in rain fall on short timescales and ecological differences amongst animals, dominate over smaller differences in 18O16O composition due to temperature.

Opis:
The analysis of carbon isotope composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is widely applied in hydrogeology and environmental studies. The method of analysis is simple and based on conversion of all DIC species to gaseus CO2 under acidic conditions. However, the analytical procedure may involve significant carbon isotope fractionation. Our experimental analysis showed that increasing the time of CO2 extraction influences the increase of ä13C(DIC) value as a result of re-dissolution of CO2 in the water expanded on the vacuum line or/and carbon isotope exchange between the extracted CO2 and the atmospheric CO2. The long time of sample storage yields an increase of ä13C(DIC) value and decrease of DIC concentration. The analytical precision up to š 0,1‰ may be achieved in the case of waters being analyzed few days after sampling. DIC concentration was evaluated according to height of peak 44 in the mass spectrum. The analytical precision of this method was š 2 mgCO2 per dm3. This method is very useful because the measurements of the height of peak 44 and carbon isotope composition of DIC can be performed simultaneously. However, this method is reliable for waters containing more than 4 mg CO2 per dm3

Opis:
One of the first installations in the World, based on the EGR (Enhanced Gas Recovery) operates in Borzecin (SW Poland). Thus creating the opportunity to gather experience in the development of CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) on an industrial scale. Due to the small size of the deposit, the technology allows great research opportunity to develop Enhanced Gas Recovery and all the processes associated with the injection of CO2 and H2S are possible to observe in a relatively short time scale. The main goal of the research is tracing migration fronts of injected gases threw sampling and isotopic analysis of gases from numeral boreholes. Gathered results gave the opportunity to get an appraisal of gas migration in the Borzecin deposit. Consequently a new tool for Enhanced Gas Recovery efficiency might be constructed with the potential of being applied in CCS technologies. Isotopic composition of hydrogen (n = 63) in methane varied from –159.3 to –85.2‰ (average –114.6‰) and isotopic composition of carbon including methane (n = 92) varied from –46.93 to –17.87‰ (average –35.22‰). Isotopic composition of carbon in carbon dioxide (n = 88) varied from –23.33 to –3.11‰ (average –13.35‰).
Głównym celem badań była próba oceny migracji zatłaczanych gazów poprzez pobór i analizę izotopów trwałych wodoru i węgla w gazach z poszczególnych otworów wiertniczych.

Streamside vegetation forming narrow "corridors" in temperate regions, is typically dominated by deciduous tree species reflecting strong influences by human activities. Riparian woodlands depend on hydrological resources and have to adapt to rapid changes in water levels and soil moisture conditions. Three main water sources are typically present in the riparian zone: river water originating in the mountains, ground water and rainfall. Stable isotopes, such as oxygen-18, are useful tools which allow for water movement to be traced within the riparian zone and which help to identify water sources utilised by the trees growing in these areas.

Biological markers and stable carbon isotopic compositions of bitumen impregnating the Pleistocene and Holocene sediments around the Starunia palaeontological site (Carpathian region, Ukraine) near discovered remnants of a mammoth and three woolly rhinoceroses, and one almost completely preserved rhinoceros carcass found in 1907 and 1929, were investigated. The research was carried out to assess genetic connections between the bitumen and oils from the nearby deep accumulations of the Boryslav-Pokuttya and Skyba units of the Carpathians. Another aim of these geochemical studies was to reveal the secondary geochemical processes (oxidation and biodegradation) influencing the bitumen, and to determine which environments have been favourable or unfavourable for the preservation of large Pleistocene vertebrates. Bitumen included within the near-surface rocks are not genetically connected with residual organic matter present in Quaternary sediments. Geochemical features, such as distributions of pentacyclic triterpanes and steranes, biomarker parameters and isotope composition indicate that all bitumens originate from oil-prone, Type II kerogen with insignificant admixture of terrestrial Type III kerogen in the middle stage of catagenesis. The oils occurring in deep accumulations in the Starunia area were the sole source of bitumen found in the near-surface sediments. Input of immature organic matter to bitumen from Pleistocene and Holocene sediments has not been found. The main factors differentiating the bitumen were: biodegradation, water washing and/or weathering. Additional influence of transport of bitumen by brine was found. The most favourable conditions for preservation of large, extinct mammals within the Pleistocene muds exist in the vicinity of Nos 22 and 23 boreholes, where bitumen is best preserved. The worst conditions were found in the vicinity of Nos 1, 4, 4' and 15 boreholes. Intensification of biodegradation and weathering effects were followed by intensive, chaotic changes of the remnants of large Pleistocene mammals.

Opis:
Lignin oxidation products (vanillyl, syringil and cummaryl phenols), and δ13C were measured in a variety of land and marine samples collected in Inner Puck Bay – dominated by marine vascular plants, small river run-off, and shallow bottom, and in Gdańsk Bay – characterized by large river run-off, small marine vascular plants population, and the average depth exceeding euphotic zone. Both study areas are parts of the Gdańsk Basin, Southern Baltic. Typical δ13C values (δ13C = -28‰) and both composition and concentrations of lignin phenols were measured in samples originating from land. Small, yet easily measurable amounts of lignin phenols were found in marine vascular plants biomass (Σ8 = 90 µg/100 mg organic matter). The biomass was characterized by exceptionally high δ13C values (-12‰). No lignin phenols and typical δ13C values (-22‰) were measured in marine phytoplankton biomass. δ13C and both composition and content of lignin phenols in organic matter of surface sediments collected in the study area fall in the range marked by the end members. The proportion of land derived organic matter calculated using lignin phenols, or δ13C in Gdańsk Bay were comparable, while in Puck Bay they differed substantially. It was concluded that a) in areas with substantial bottom coverage with vascular plants the two end members approach, usually employed to establish the contribution of organic matter sources, is insufficient, b) organic matter originating from three sources: riverine, phytoplankton, and vascular plants contribute to sedimentary organic matter in Puck Bay with the respective proportion 30:40:30.

Opis:
Investigations into chloride CO2-rich water occurring in the Polish and Slovakian Carpathians were carried out to gain a better understanding of the Cl- sources. The primary Cl- concentration in sea water, processes accompanying diagenesis, together with water-rock-gas interactions, have undoubtedly influenced the present content of chlorides. The Cl-- concentrations in the waters analysed vary from 35.5 to 4148.3 mg/l, lower than in sea water, with a mean ~19000 mg/l. The measured δ37Cl values range from -1.15 to -0.26‰, below the typical sea water value of 0‰. It might be concluded that the chemical and isotopic composition of these waters are the result of reactions during diagenesis (e.g., ion exchange or diffusion through low-permeability clay layers) as well as meteoric water influx.

A geochemical analysis was conducted on peat cores from two peatlands in Southern Poland that cover a time span from the Atlantic period (from 4900 BC in Wolbrom and from 4200 BC in Otrębowskie Brzegi) to modern times. The results were subjected to a statistical analysis using PAST software. The analysis was conducted taking into account previous botanical analyses, radiocarbon dating and lead-210 dating. The aim was to compare these two study sites in terms of their locations in different basins and anthropogenic activity. Elemental concentrations in the tested peat profiles were dependent on sediment type and their values range between very low (close to geochemical background values) and extremely high – especially in the case of heavy metals, like zinc and lead. The comparative analysis showed a synchronous record of local and regional changes of chemical composition in the two peatlands, which vary in terms of location, lithology and type of peat sediment.

The Oligocene Grybów Succession is recognized as a counterpart of the anoxic Menilite Formation. Its comprehensive geochemical investigations are made in the key sections of the Ropa Tectonic Window (the Grybów Unit, Polish Outer Carpathians). The maceral assemblages, dominated by land-plant liptinite, vitrinite and intertinite, correspond to kerogen types II and III. A Tmax vs. HI diagram shows terrestrial kerogen type II with various additions of type III and algal kerogen type I. A variation in δ13Corg. (from –25.21 to –27.38‰) may have resulted from variations in the composition of organic matter (the content of terrestrial vs. marine organic matter), controlled by depositional setting (turbidite vs. hemipelagic). The highest TOC contents are associated with an enhanced influx of land-derived organic matter. The redox-sensitive trace elements positively correlate with TOC and TS contents. Redox conditions varied between oxic and anoxic, as was concluded from TOC-TS, V/(V+Ni) and U/Th. The turbidity currents might have ventilated the bottom waters, especially more efficiently in the proximal zone of turbidite sedimentation. Moreover, oxygenated bottom waters may have also affected the concentration of trace metals, owing to migration of the redox interface downward within the sediments.

Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios of well-preserved calcitic bivalves from the Lower-lowermost Upper Kimmeridgian of Central Poland (SW margin of the Holy Cross Mountains) have been studied to reconstruct palaeoenvironmental conditions and variations in ancient water chemistry. Low and scattered δ18O and δ13C values of bivalve shells from shallow carbonate deposits of the Hypselocyclum and the Hypselocyclum-Divisum zone boundary (-3.5 to -1.5, and 2.6 to 4.0‰, respectively) are a result of salinity changes, and local variations in the composition of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in conditions of restricted water circulation. A slight increase in bivalve δ13C values and more densely clustering of δ18O values is observed after the marine transgression at the Divisum-Mutabilis zone boundary. A global decrease of δ13C values of marine carbonates is partly recorded in Lower-lowermost Upper Kimmeridgian bulk carbonates from central Poland (from the Radomsko Elevation and the Wieluń Upland). Local negative shifts and the data scatter are, however, observed in rocks deposited in a very shallow environment of carbonate platforms during the Platynota and Hypselocyclum chrons. This interval corresponds to the uppermost part of the lowstand systems track of a major regressive trend, which had started already in the Late Oxfordian.

Methane was collected from the surficial sedimentary layer (0 to about 20 cm) in 45 fresh water lakes in Poland. Sampling was also carried out at various depths of the over lying water column (0.15 to 12 m) between noon and early after noon, on a seasonal basis, between 1992 and 1996. A positive correlation between the depth of the lake water, the δ13 C (CH4) value (from ca. -l.4 to -2.3% per l m depth) and the wider δ13 C (CH4) variation over the thermocline are probably due to: the time of sinking of organic particles resulting in more in tense acetate fermentation in shallower portions of the lake; the temperature variation; differences in the precursors of methane, the diffusion effect, and an increase of bioavailable DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon) at greater depths. Non-seasonal variation of isotope ratios in methane and the depth-isotope ratio correlation show that the lake system is in dynamic equilibrium on a scale of hours and days. Therefore, earlier models of methanogenesis relating and the atmospheric methane isotopic budget, proposed by other authors and based on sampling of methane from sediments, need to be revised. More over, δ13 C (CH4) values higher during seasonal over turn (mixing of benthic and surface waters) than during stagnation, have been observed. This is probably due to the fact that during over turn periods some organic compounds (methane precursors) and methane in the surficial part of sediments, are oxidized with a resalting kinetic isotope effect. It is proposed that oxidation of methane and other organic compounds during seasonal over turn may be responsible for post-depositional lamination observed as pale (autumn over turn) and dark (summer organic-rich unoxic stagnation) millimetres-thick layers in fresh water lake sediments.

We present the results of isotope measurements (δ18O, δ D, δ13CDIC and 14C) and chemical analyses (TDS, TOC, HCO3–, SO42–, Cl–, NO3–, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+ Na+ and K+) conducted on groundwater samples collected from deep Cenozoic aquifers. These aquifers are the basic source of drinking water at numerous localities within the study area in northern Poland. Most of the δ18O determinations are characterised by low variability (i.e., > 70 per cent of δ18O are between –9.5‰ and –9.2‰). In most cases tritium activity was not detected or its content slightly exceeded the uncertainty of measurement (from ±0.3 T.U. to ± 0.5 T.U.). On average, 14C activity is twice higher than that under similar conditions and in hydrogeological systems. The δ13CDIC values fall within the –13.6‰ to –12.8‰ range. A slight variability is observed when considering all isotope and chemical data within the study area and under these hydrogeological conditions. In general, the results of isotope and chemical analyses seem to be homogeneous, indicating the presence of closely similar groundwaters in the system, irrespective of geological formation. It is likely that there is a significant hydraulic connection between shallow and deep aquifers in the Gwda catchment, which indicates the potential for seepage of pollutants from shallow Pleistocene to deep Miocene aquifers. This can endanger the latter by e.g., high concentrations of NO3–, SO42– and Cl– ions from shallow aquifers within the Gwda catchment.

Stable isotopes constitute a powerful tool to study the sources of greenhouse gases, especially CO2. Carbon dioxide derived from the burning of fossil fuels has a distinct 13C isotopic composition depending on the type of fuel. Therefore, one can attribute contributions of different emission sources to the total CO2 load in the urban atmosphere. Quasi-continuous measurements of the mixing ratio of atmospheric CO2 and its 13C signature were performed in Krakow in 2013 to analyze its seasonal and synoptic variability. High CO2 mixing ratios were observed in winter due to intensified burning of fossil fuels for heating purposes (mostly methane). During the summer of 2013, a slight increase in atmospheric CO2 was observed following a drought event and a subsequent suppression of the photosynthetic activity of the local biosphere. A high temporal resolution of the measurements allowed to analyze short-term increases of the measured CO2 mixing ratios. Two such events are presented and discussed. Isotopic mass balance combined with air backward trajectory analysis allowed to attribute local traffic and industry as potential sources of these events.

Opis:
Several decades ago during exploration for additional resources of tap water a saline water deposit (Cl-Na, J, Fe, B type) has been discovered in the area of Rzeszów hospital park. Nowadays this water is exploited for balneological purposes. In the frame-work of this study for the first time the following stable isotopes: (δ18 i δD, δ13C, δ37Cl) and radiocarbon were determined in order to elucidate the origin of water, its mineralization and quality. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope data leads to conclusion that these waters were formed in a warm pre-Pleistocene period or they are mixture of Miocene seawater with Pleistocene infiltration waters. Carbon isotopic composition (b13= –8.65‰) of bicarbonate is characteristic for deep pore waters occurring in sedimentary rocks, whereas distinctly positive and negative δ37 Cl value rather excludes origin of chlorine ion from an open sea basin. Absence of radiocarbon (in Rzeszów well) indicates no admixture of recent infiltration waters, hence these waters are well preserved from anthropogenic pollution. This is further confirmed by very low concentration of nitrate.
