Opis:
Urban development along the southern coastal zone of West Java province involves land-use changes that have a direct impact on coastal ecosystems and services. The southern coastal, a metropolitan area to the south of west java province, is a study case in which the urban coastal occupation is reflected, with the consequent loss of certain services that the ecosystems offer to the population. The research analyses the Environmental Impact Assessment and the impacts of Coastal Zone Management proposals. The methodology used in the research leads to the Drivers-Pressures-State change-Impact-Response (DPSIR) perspective. The approach to the DPSIR has been based on a set of objectives that have brought a strong focus on the long-term preservation of the environment. As such, the planning process has included - and is recommended to include - the following steps: a) Environmental risk assessment; b) Sieve mapping process; c) Formulation of development regulations; d) Local development plans; e) Environmental Impact Assessment, f) Environmental Management Plan. In this sense, management responses should focus on the conservation of these threatened services, with the coordination and cooperation among different public administrations.

Opis:
This article discusses the formation and evolution of the coastal zone of the southern Baltic from the decay of the last Scandinavian ice-sheet, which took place some 14 ka BP. During the first 4 ka, the shores of the then southern Baltic basins were shaped under the dominant influence of considerable variations in water level and the young, post-glacial topography emerging from under the ice. Later, until the beginning of the Atlantic transgression, the shores were also unstable, because sea level changes resulting from periodic connections with the World Ocean followed one another in rapid succession. Since that transgression destroyed much of the former shoreline, its reconstruction is at best highly problematical, and in some places no longer possible. The maximum range of the Litorina Sea gave rise to a coastal zone that in many places is to this day quite conspicuous in the local topography and sediments. During the last 4 ka, the shoreline has changed relatively little, thus the present shoreline is largely redolent of the original one. In the coming 100 years or so, the abrasion of the cliffs along the southern Baltic shore will probably accelerate, as will the retrogradation of certain sections of the shoreline, with the result that the shoreline will be less of a straight line than it is at present. Land up to a height of 1 m above sea level will be inundated. The greatest changes in the lie of the shoreline are to be expected in the River Wisła (Vistula) delta and around the Zalew Szczeciński (Oderhaff, Szczecin Lagoon).

Opis:
In July–September 2004 and April 2005, the specialists of the Department of Marine and Environmental Geology of All-Russian Geological Institute (VSEGEI) conducted field studies of the coastal zone of the Gulf of Finland from thesouthern alignment of the St. Petersburg Flood Protective Dam to Lebyazhye. The basic purpose of the studies is the analysis of coastal zone dynamics. Along the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland from Lebyazhye to the Dam, three different coastal dynamics zones were identified: (1) flat accumulative shore with aquatic plants, (2) erosion zone and (3) zone of modern sand accumulation. Along-shore sand drift in the eastern direction was also determined. Alongside with routine observations, the comparative analysis of space photography images of the study area, carried out during last 20 years, allowed finding out that as a result of intense eastward sand transfer, as mush as 80 metres of sand accumulative bodies have been eroded since 1982 near the village of Izhora. To the west of a small river, a 230-metres long sand split has been formed since 1982.

Opis:
The wave-induced bedload transport and spatial distribution of its magnitude in the southern Baltic coastal zone of Poland are estimated. The vicinity of Lubiatowo was selected as a representative part of the Polish coast. It was assumed that transport is a function of shear stress; alternative approaches, based on force balances and discharge relationships, were not considered in the present study. Four models were studied and compared over a wide range of bottom shear stress and wind-wave conditions. The set of models comprises classic theories that assume a simplified influence of turbulence on sediment transport (e.g., advocated by authors such as Du Boys, Meyer-Peter and Müller, Ribberink, Engelund and Hansen). It is shown that these models allow to estimate transport comparable to measured values under similar environmental conditions. A united general model for bedload transport is proposed, and a set of maps of wave bedload transport for various wind conditions in the study area is presented.

Stwarza, wiec nieporównanie większe możliwości zrozumienia uwarunkowań i przebiegu zjawisk decydujących o skutkach, jakie obserwujemy w strefie brzegowej, szczególnie w aspekcie zniszczeń posztormowych zagrażających infrastrukturze.
The coastal zone, due to its inaccessibility and dynamic processes, is a very interesting but difficult research area. Until recent years, the variety of coastal environments required the use of different research techniques, however the analysis of the results obtained, was not detailed enough to describe very complicated phenomena and coastal development. The integrated laser Canning (LiDAR) technology creates new opportunities to obtain fast, accurate and simultaneous data of the sea bottom and the beach relief. Laser scanning measurements taken in the highest water transparency with good sea and weather conditions make it possible to obtain 2.5÷3 Secchi Depth, which - in case of the south Baltic Sea - equals approximately 30 meters. The analysis of Digital Surface Model (DSM) and Digital Terrain Model (DTM), obtained through filtering vegetation and other objects, allows to identify the relationship between the causes and effects of dynamic processes observed in the underwater and the land part of the coastal zone. Application of the laser scanning technique creates better opportunities to understand the conditions and phenomena observed in the coastal zone, especially storm damages posing threat to the infrastructure.

Coastal peatlands depend in respect to their vertical growth totally on the sea level, are witnesses of its variations and, furthermore, preserve remnants of organisms which permit conclusions about the nutrient content and salinity of the flood water and thus of the surrounding sea. Black layers which occur frequently in the peat profiles point to evolution phases whereas the sea level fell or the mire became desiccated. Around thirty radiocarbon data, data from pollen and diatom analyses as well as from geochemical investigations provide the base to reconstruct the sea level history. The placement of particular transgression/regression stages could be determined with a higher accuracy than before and demonstrate a strong correlation to climate oscillations such as to the Late Bronze Age dry period or the Little Ice Age climate deterioration. Uncertainties still remain in regard to the regression magnitudes and to the length of the hiatuses in the peat sequences.

Renewable energies have the potential to provide relatively clean energy, mostly for domestic energy. Wind power generation is expected to rise in the near future and has grown exponentially over the past decade in many countries. The most important parameter that must be taken into consideration when designing and studying wind power conversion systems is the wind speed. Probability density functions (PDF) such as Weibull is often used in wind speed and wind power analyses. This research presents an assessment of wind power based on the Weibull distribution statistics in the coastal of southern Iraq at Basrah province. Wind speed data for the study site were obtained from NASA at a height of 50 m for the period 1979–2016 with a time interval of 10 min. The data at a height of 50 m were extrapolated using the power law in order to estimate the wind speed at new heights: 30, 70 and 100 m. The different parameters of the Weibull function as well as the daily and monthly wind speeds, mean, variance and potential energy at four altitudes were estimated and analysed using Windographer software. Results indicate that the maximum wind speed at 100 m is 6.4 m·s–1, giving an average power density of 298 W·m–2, which indicates that the location of the study has marginal and useless potential for installing large wind turbines.

Opis:
The paper presents a description of the course of ice phenomena in three rivers (Rega, Parsęta, Łupawa) in the coastal zone (Southern Baltic) in the territory of Poland. An evident acceleration of the term of decline of ice phenomena has been observed over the period of the last 60 years, varying from 3 to 5 days∙dec-1. The situation caused shortening of the ice season in a range from 3 to 7 days dec-1. The observed transformation of the ice regime of rivers should be associated with climatic changes. The analysis of air temperature in the same period for two meteorological stations (Kołobrzeg, Łeba) suggests a considerable increase in the mean annual air temperature, amounting to 0.3 and 0.2ºC∙dec-1, respectively. In the monthly distribution, temperature growth was the highest in April, where an increase in air temperature of 0.5ºC∙dec-1 and 0.4ºC∙dec-1 was recorded, respectively.

High-resolution wind series in the southern Baltic Sea for the period of 1958–2007 are analysed to generate representative climate input conditions for a multi-scale morphodynamic model to simulate decadal-to-centennial coastline change. Four seasonal wind classes, each characterized by a predominant distribution of wind direction and speed, are derived from statistical analysis. Further calibration of this statistical description is done by sensitivity studies of the model to generate similar coastline changes of the Darss-Zingst peninsula as the measured data for the last century. The coastline change of this area is then projected for the next 300 years based on four different climate scenarios, through which impacts of accelerated sea level rise and storm frequency on the long-term coastline change are quantified.

Opis:
Research by the Polish Geological Survey has been carried out along the southern Baltic coastal zone over a distance of 38 km. The Baltic Sea is classified as non-tidal, and its southern coasts are built entirely of weakly lithified sedimentary rocks. These deposits form three main types of coast, namely cliffs, barriers and alluvial coasts (wetlands), with the research focusing on the first two. Methods including remote sensing, mapping (geological, hydrogeological), offshore survey (bathymetric and geophysical measurements), laboratory analyses and modelling revealed a number of natural hazards. These are, respectively: (1) permanently occurring hazards, causing material damage such as: landslides, coastal erosion and seabed erosion; (2) incidental hazards such as dune breakage and storm surge overflow and (3) hypothetical threats that may occur in the future, such as hydrogeohazards defined here as flooding resulting from groundwater level rise or more rarely, earthquake threats.

Palaemon elegans, a new component of the Gulf of Gdańsk macrozoobenthos, colonised the southern Baltic coastal zone in the late 20th and early 21st century. Analysis of the stomach contents of P. elegans revealed 16 plant and animal taxa that these prawns had fed on. The principal dietary component was detritus, with a mean frequency of occurrence in stomachs of > 80%. The most frequently occurring plant components in the diet were algae from the genus Cladophora and the family Ectocarpaceae, while the most significant animal components were Harpacticoida, Chironomidae, Ostracoda and Gammarus spp. The results of the study show that the dietary composition of P. elegans differed significantly between stations and months. The foraging area consisted of two distinctive regions – the Inner Puck Bay, and the Outer Puck Bay together with the Dead Vistula River; two of the stations – Gdynia and Sopot – were distinct from all the others. However, no obvious seasonality in the food composition could be demonstrated.

Concentrations of sulphate ions and particle size distributions were measured in the marine boundary layer using a ten-cascade Berner impactor at Hel between December 1997 and March 1998, and with a filter packin Gdynia from February to May 2001. In the marine boundary layer over the Hel Peninsula the presence of natural sea-salt and non-sea-salt sulphate ions (nssSO4 2−) was confirmed in the aerosols. The nssSO4 were present in all size ranges only in December 1997 and in the first half of January 1998, making up an average of 83.7±2.4% of the total sulphate content. In the other winter months, nssSO4 2− were recorded only in aerosols of diameters from 0.4 to 1.5 μm, and their average contribution dropped by over 20%. The extended growing season in the Southern Baltic resulted in the formation of fine particles that appeared in the marine boundary layer in early winter. At that time the proportion of nssSO4 2− in ultra-fine particles ranged from 75.7% to 100%. The concentration of nssSO4 2−, which varied from 0.8 to 2.3 nmol m−3 in particles < 0.4 μm in size probably constituted the natural background aerosol population in the relatively clean coastal environment of the Southern Baltic Sea. In the coastal urbanised area of Gdynia, the sulphate concentration in aerosols was higher than at Hel (av. 75.3 nmol m−3) but the proportion of nssSO4 was low, of the order of 24%. Sea salt was then the dominant source of sulphate.
