Opis:
This study aims to review the effectiveness of social media as a platform for social mobilization and to show how social media influence social movements in the US. It seeks to offer a literature-based comparison between the traditional and the new ones, answering the question why social media is a matter in American politics. It offers practical data about the role of social media in raising awareness, creating movements, influencing policy decisions, and changing Americans’ minds. This paper builds on several meta-analysis studies. It reviews and discusses previous results found in literature. It also uses the Pew Research Center which offers critical data relating to the research topic. It finds that social media successfully encourage the Americans to engage in political discussions and increase their participation. Social media are an alternative space to social mobilization, which has positively influenced social movements.

Opis:
The emergence of Poland’s Komitet Obrony Robotników, KOR, is a challenge for social movement research whose concepts were mainly developed studying movements in Western democratic countries. The currently dominating structuralist rationalist approach tends to reduce protests to a strategic reaction to favourable opportunity structures. Although this approach offers an adequate evolutionary explanation for KOR’s success, it does not offer a convincing causal explanation for its emergence and the mobilization of activists. This article develops an alternative explanation, using concepts from theories of collective identity, american pragmatism, Émile Durkheim, and Max Weber.

To what extent do current models apply to analyze soft repression? Research on soft repression is still under development, and due to technological advancement, it is necessary to analyze different types of soft repression in a way to modify and refine existing typologies. Drawing on lessons learnt from Asian and regional studies, this article aims to discuss critically selected theoretical tools used to study soft repression. It scrutinizes four models that apply to delve analytically into different types of soft repression. The focus is on the most influential approaches in recent years that gained the highest impact on the development of studies on contentious politics. The first typology applies to differentiate between soft repression forms used mainly by non-state actors. The second approach treats soft repression as an explaining variable, as the text focuses on the consequences of soft repression. The third model applies to studying hard and soft repression during protests. Its analysis exposes how the combination of effectively selected forms of repression leads to the demobilization of individual movements and discourages participation in the protest. The last model involves a specific form of soft repression that uses relationships and interpersonal ties to demobilize protesters.

This article is a critical analysis of the rhetoric of successful mass mobilization against the proposed total ban on abortion in Poland, focusing on the Black Protest initiated in social media in September 2016 and resulting in the All-Poland’s Women Strike which took place on the October 3rd, 2016. I argue with the dominant feminist narrative of the Black Protest, which conceptualizes it as a radical transformation of public debate and civil society in Poland as well as a clear manifestation of changing identities and attitudes towards the political among the so-called “ordinary women“. Instead of a story of change, I propose a narrative of continuity, arguing that 2016 women’s mobilization was successful and mobilized so many different women because it was rooted in well-known neoliberal discourse and traditional social genotypes of femininity, such as the Polish Mother and the indispensable family life manager.

Opis:
This article is a case study of the process of mobilization to violence on the internet. The goal of this paper was to identify a select number of factors within the narrative on the topic of modern immigration that can be found on the internet and analyze them using the theoretical constructs that can be found in the literature on this subject. The scientists that study genocide have identified several factors commonly found in historically documented events that must be present in order for genocide to occur. In this paper the author will refer to works of scientists such as Helen Fein, Manus I. Midlarsky, Lech M. Nijakowski. The author of the paper analyzed the content published on the internet that deals with the topic of immigration. The materials selected for research contained topics that treat the subject of accepting refugees from outside of Europe, their process of assimilation and the way they coexist with the local population. The analysis was based on content in the Polish language which includes both materials that were created in Polish and those that were originally in a different language and then were remade with Polish footnotes. The content for the study was selected from among the following sources: propaganda movies which spread on the internet through social media, short unscientific propaganda and informational articles and finally memes (pictures with short footnotes). Factors that were analyzed in the following article: 1) Universe of obligation, construct created by Helen Fein. 2) Conspiratory discourse, described by Lech Nijakowski. 3) Utility and parasitism; discourse referring to them. 4) Two conditions necessary to instigate genocide, described by Manus I. Midlarsky. 5) Discourse on the topic of immoral sexual actions described by the author based on the theory of discourses created by Lech Nijakowski. During the study all the aforementioned factors have been identified. The author described the examples analyzed, interpreted them and subsequently matched them to the categories described above. It was determined that within those examples we can distinguish a number of factors that match the elements of mobilizing the population to violence. The article closes with an analysis of potential consequences of the phenomena described.

Opis:
This article draws its inspiration from both Heidegger’s theses introduced in his landmark essay, “The Question Concerning Technology” (1977 [1956]) and his interpretation of poiēsis, a concept discussed throughout a range of works in the later portion of his career, in order to demonstrate the multidimensional foundation that drives successful online activist campaigns. In the contemporary era, among the most pressing concerns, as professed by Taylor (2018) and Dreyfus and Kelly (2011), is a widespread lack of existential commitment. Channeling Heidegger, and to an extent Kierkegaard, they proclaim that all things, including ourselves and our interests, are increasingly malleable and subject to revision depending on their applicability of being wielded as commodities in various social circumstances, specifically for the accruement of social capital. This phenomenon shows itself with remarkable clarity in a practice referred to as “mouse-click solidarity” (Herzogenrath-Amelung 2018), online communal engagement that lacks any substantive devotion or involvement. Fan activism, or cultural acupuncture, as it has been coined by Jenkins (2011), demonstrates a unique opportunity to explore social movements imbued with and inspired by sincere and legitimate commitment. Fan activism, in contrast to mouse-click solidarity (or slacktivism), is a form of online social media engagement that relies upon a user’s previously established devotion to a text, as well as an understanding of how its themes are applicable to understand real world issues. Such a combination has a unique ability to not only foster an irresistible desire to participate with likeminded others in order to ensure specific issues are addressed, but also an awareness of how individuals are involved in the cultivation of world. A Heideggerian interpretation of poiēsis is the critical component that sparks and sustains fan activist campaigns, as this concept unveils how we are both affected by world and compelled to engage, or dwell, with it. Through an analysis of fan activist campaigns, this chapter argues that revitalizing poiēsis in our everyday life, in particular as it concerns our communal self, is critical for reviving a sense of commitment in the world and, subsequently, to once again position and understand human beings as uniquely transformative agents.

Opis:
The relationships between social movement challenges and political outcomes remain strongly underresearched in the field of social movements. Here, we use the labels “social” and “political” in a broad sense to comprise many types of challenges and many types of outcomes, such as economic and social outcomes for specific movements as well as general policy outcomes. Four theories are crucial for understanding successful mobilization of social movements: relative deprivation, resource mobilization, framing, and the theoretical figure of the opening political opportunity structure. Political outcomes, at least in democratic political systems, are usually the result of a parallelogram of different claims and means of influencing outcomes, in short, of compromises. Here, we list various forms of outcomes, from successful acceptance of movement demands to part-time successes or entire failures, and also the various strategies incumbents have in dealing with social movement challenges. Researchers usually have focused on the individual and structural conditions of the emergence of social movements but less so on the conditions of processing social movement demands and the outcomes for movements themselves, for the electorate and for policy changes. Consequently, there is little research available that would meet the requirements of an adequate research design in view of the numerous factors spelled out here as a theoretical control list. The idea of a response hierarchy of incumbents is suggested as a sort of a dispositional concept for further, more consolidated, research in this area. Also the notion of cycles of various sorts has to be kept in mind in order to avoid misjudging of both, the persistence of social movements over time, and their eventual successes and failures.

Opis:
The appearance of the dysfunction affects in a specific way the functioning of the human, his environment, the relationships with others. A physically disabled person needs skills that allow him/her to regain self-reliance, self-esteem. The activities of many institutions aim at providing equal opportunities, working against all of the many forms of discrimination, social and professional included, against physically disabled/handicapped. However, despite the multiple actions undertaken, the social alienation of the people with various motor dysfunctions can be observed. One of the most interesting initiative that meets the needs and expectations of the handicapped/physically disabled people, especially those after spinal cord injury, is the idea of community/environmental rehabilitation that originated in the United States, and then developed in Sweden as an Active Rehabilitation movement. In Poland, Foundation for Active Rehabilitation (FAR) is an organization that promotes and implements the ideas of an active rehabilitation. It is a non-governmental organization, established on the initiative of “wheelchair users for wheelchair users”. In this paper we present the results of research of the effects of various forms of Active Rehabilitation supporting the process of the social activation of the physically disabled, aiming at their inclusion in the mainstream of social life, and the increase of their independence in life. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of personality model in the Active Rehabilitation.
