This paper presents the results of comparative studies on seed morphology and anatomy of two species: Erica carnea and E. erigena. SEM and LM micrographs are presented. The seeds differ in size and shape of epidermal cells of the seed coat, but they represent the same structural type, which is clearly dissimilar from that of the other European species of this genus.

The investigations of the effects of incorporation of some recessive genes into cv. Radius of alfalfa on seed productivity were performed in greenhouse and in field experiments. BC2 progenies were produced and compared to the standard cultivar Radius. Introduction of recessive genes lp (long raceme), tf (top flowering) and br (branched raceme) affected type of inflorescence: 1) the lp trait significantly increased floret and pod number per raceme, seed number per raceme and seed weight per sq. m., 2) the tf trait increased significantly number of raceme per stem and seed yield per sq. m., 3) the branched raceme trait governed by a single recessive gene br enhanced 6 – 10 times floret number per raceme.

Opis:
The genus Taraxacum is taxonomically complicated due to apomixis. Therefore, there are significant differences in knowledge of regional Taraxacum-Floras among European countries. Similarly, some taxa are well characterised with well-known distribution, whereas some ones are known e.g. from a single locality. Taraxacum scanicum of section Erythrosperma is one of the most common microspecies of this section in Europe. Recently, this taxon was split into three microspecies. In this study we map the distribution of three described taxa of this group in Poland, i.e. T. scanicum s.s., T. prunicolor and T. cristatum. The survey showed that T. scanicum has a similar distribution as T. prunicolor in Poland. This is in contrast with the hitherto known distribution of both taxa. T. cristatum was found at a single locality that is quite distant from the distribution in southern central Europe. We also provide with new morphological characteristics of achenes and pollen for T. scanicum s.s. and T. prunicolor.

Erysimum pieninicum (Zapał.) Pawł. (Brassicaceae) is an endemic species, growing only in Pieniny Mts. The aim of the presented work was to investigate its pollen morphology as well as its ultrastructural traits of pericarp and seed-coat. Pollen grains of this species were of small size, 3-zonocolpate with reticulate ornamentation. The external siliqua surface was of rugose sculpture, covered by numerous, stellate hairs. The internal surface of the fruit was naked and characterized by striate sculpture. The seed-coat ornamentation of E. pieninicum was of blister type.

Opis:
Pinus densiflora f. multicaulis is a rare and unusual form of genus Pinus. It has excellent ornamen- tal values due to many trunks from its root collar, and produces female, male, and bisexual strobili on the same tree. However, there is limited study whether the bisexual strobili are functional, mature lateral cones produce filled seeds, and the seeds from the mature lateral cones germinate and grow as well as those from mature apical cones. The structure of apical female, and lateral male and bisexual strobili were analyzed in an open-pollination-progeny population. The strobili were photographed to obtain external, cross-section, and radial-section images using a 45× stereoscopic microscope. Radial sections of strobili were imaged using scanning electron microscopy. Characteristics of apical and lateral cones and seeds were surveyed by cone analysis and germination test. P. densiflora f. multicaulis developed typical female strobili apically, and ordinary male and bisexual strobili laterally. Additionally, female strobili developed laterally whereas the male strobili were normally located. The mature lateral female strobili had the same structure as the apical female. In the mature bisexual strobili, the proportion of male and female tissue was unequal. The cones developed from lateral female strobili showed highly significant differences in the length, width, and weight, being shorter (32.7%), narrower (26.9%), and lighter (59.8%) than those from apical female strobili. Both types produced filled seeds and seedlings, and well significant positive correlations were found among characteristics of seeds from apical and lateral female strobili. The initial seed germination rate of the seeds from apical female strobili was higher than that of seeds from lateral female strobili, but the difference decreased over time. The viability and spatial distribution of the female and male tissue of bisporangiate cones, and their frequent occurrence suggests a common mechanism for the production of bisporangiate structures in seed plants.

Induced mutation rate of barley esterase loci has been estimated. Results suggested that about 3% of investigated M₁ spikes had seeds which gave rise to M₂ seedlings mutated in one of four esterase loci. M₁ plants were obtained after chemical treatment of seeds from two spring barley cultivars Aramir and Bielik. The majority of mutants were reconfirmed in the М₃ generation.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of a study on mericarps and seed morphology of four taxa occurring in Poland: Heracleum sphondylium subsp. sphondylium and subsp. sibiricum, H. mantegazzianum and H. sosnowskyi. Apart from selected biometric traits we analysed pericarps and seed-coat patterns using a stereoscopic microscope (SM) and a scanning microscope (SEM). Considerable diff erences in the dorsal surface of mericarps were observed, but major structural similarities were found on the ventral surface of mericarps. Pericarp surface diff ers signifi cantly between native and alien taxa in terms of secondary sculpture. The examined seeds were characterised by reticulate primary sculpture with diff erent size and shape of testa cells. The macro- and micromorphological characteristics of the mericarp and seeds may provide valuable additional diagnostic criteria for delimitation of Heracleum and can be used in the identifi cation of fruits and seeds.

The morphology and anatomy of generative organs of Salsola kali ssp. ruthenica was examined in detail using the light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The whole flowers, fruits and their parts (pistil, stamens, sepals, embryo, seed) were observed in different developmental stages. In the first stage (June), flower buds were closed. In the second stage (August), flowers were ready for pollination/fertilization. In the third stage (September), fruits were mature. Additionally, the anatomical and morphological structure of sepals was observed by means of LM and SEM. Thanks to the transverse and longitudinal semi-sections through sepals, the first phase of wing formation was recorded by SEM. The appearance of stomata in the epidermal cells of sepals above the forming wings was very interesting, too. The stomata were observed also in mature fruits.

Opis:
Pinus heldreichii (Bosnian pine) is a Balkan-Apennine endemic and relict pine species that inhabits high mountains in the Mediterranean and sub-Mediterranean regions. Nineteen populations of P. heldreichii from the Western Balkans encompassing 187 individual trees were examined to evaluate morphological variation, a rarely studied aspect of the species. Univariate and multivariate statistics were applied in order to assess the variation of morphological traits of cones and seeds, evaluate the relationships among the sampled populations and verify geographic differentiation in the Dinaric Alps versus Scardo-Pindic mountains. The observations of P. heldreichii covering the populations from the western margins and the centre of the species distribution range indicated a morphological variation among populations and their geographic structure. In general, the southern populations (Scardo-Pindic group) had lower values for the most of morphological traits than the northern ones (Dinaric group). The observed geographic differences between these populations exhibit a north-western to south-eastern gradient, with a few inconsistencies. The southernmost sampled population, Tomorr in Albania, showed remarkable morphological divergence from the other studied populations and appeared to be a distinct morphological group. The pattern of morphological variation in Bosnian pine most likely resulted from multiple effects of long-term isolation and fragmentation in high mountain systems, adaptation to extreme environments and human disturbances.
