Opis:
Theoretical background: A sports career is a specific activity because it starts at an early age, lasts a relatively short time, and usually athletes are most successful when their peers are just starting to develop their typical professional careers. In previous research on the second careers of ex-athletes, mainly the top performers were described, forgetting that many athletes play in the lower leagues and sport is also their main profession. In this study, athletes who played at different levels of competition were analysed. Purpose of the article: The article aims to determine how the length of a sports career affects the second professional career of former athletes. Research methods: The studied population were Polish basketball players of working-age after finishing their sports careers. The survey was conducted online in 2021 and 301 people took part in it. The average duration of a sports career of participants was 10.13 years. Former basketball players were divided into 2 groups according to their career length. The first group consisted of those whose basketball careers lasted at least 10 years (160 people), and the second group consisted of those whose careers were shorter than 10 years (141 people). Main findings: Former players whose sports careers lasted for at least 10 years are more satisfied with them than those whose sports careers were shorter, but they assess their current career prospects worse. It may result from the fact that among those whose sports careers were shorter, a greater percentage have higher education. The results also show that those whose basketball careers were longer, are now more likely to work in the field of sport. In conclusion, it can be said that earlier retirement from sports, favours to a greater extent university graduating and also allows a faster transition to a second professional career.

Opis:
This collection of memories depicts the background of the pre-war legal career of the well-known Polish civil law judge, Witold Święcicki. His experiences range from his family background and childhood; his exile to Russia in 1905; his studies; the beginnings of his professional career; marriage; and repatriation in 1918. Successive posts held by Witold Święcicki during the Second Polish Republic, as well as positions on editorial boards of legal periodicals with which he co-worked, are listed. However, more important is the description of the functioning of the judge’s house, in particular his limited social contacts, which were reduced to the group of former, current or future related lawyers. German occupation stories are sourced from his daughter’s coverage of events. A combination of historical events, which twice brought Witold Święcicki to the Bialy- stok district, are detailed. The memoir ends in 1944. The career circumstances for Witold Święcicki, were typical of the Second Polish Republic.

Opis:
In reference to cultural patterns in collectivistic societies, teaching and learning are greatly influenced by the teachers’ collectivistic or individualistic cultural orientation (Kaur & Noman, 2015). However, in dealing with both audiences and their teaching platforms, a chasm appears between methodologies and their applications since collectivistic societies are reluctant to accept methodologies perceived as mere Western innovations. In other words, a seemingly pedagogical incongruence arises where direct individualistic Western influence is perceived as unsuitable to a collectivistic mindset. One must keep in mind that family members in collectivist societies, who view themselves as part of a group rather than independent individuals, seem to feel more interdependent and mutually responsible for each other. In addition to Vygotski’s assertion that children’s cognitive development is enriched through social interaction with more skilled individuals (1978), Bandura (1982) emphasizes that the degree to which learners believe in their own self-efficacy influences their functioning cognitively, motivationally, emotionally, and their decision making process. Also, self-efficacy is perceived to accelerate the process of adapting to a new environment while learners adopt new cultural practices and consent to norms and expectations. In our exploration, second-language learners (SLLs) from collectivistic societies advance academically—English as a second language included—within the frame of sociocultural theory, since they seem to be motivated by their culturally- induced sense of obligation to honor their parents and other group members. These SLLs are positively influenced by their prior experiences with the group’s perceptions and expectations of their capability to learn an additional language (Bandura & Schunk, 1981; Schunk, 1991). Our research seems to indicate that this outcome is significantly affected by the self-efficacy and self-reliance produced by prior successes in challenging tasks that may have been mandated by the SLL’s elders. In addition, SLLs also seem to succeed in accomplishing more challenging goals as they observe their families’ values and traditions even when they are in a society that enforces individualistic values.

Opis:
Wiele uwagi poświęca problemom związanym z organizacją orientacji i poradnictwa zawodowego w środowisku szkoły. Ilustruje, zapoczątkowany w 20-leciu międzywojennym, proces alokacji orientacji i poradnictwa zawodowego w środowisku szkolnym.
In this article, its author presents the beginnings of institutional career guidance in Poland and the factors that contributed to its development. It shows difficulties associated with training staff for the purposes of career guidance. A lot of attention has also been devoted to the problems connected with the organization of orientation and career guidance in the school environment. Furthermore, the article illustrates the process of introduction of orientation and career guidance to the school environment which was initiated in the interwar period. It recalls solutions introduced which were utterly negated by the authorities of Polish People's Republic. Remaining in this background, the author presents the activities of post-war educational authorities aimed at creating the school a center providing students with basic support in choosing a profession. Indirectly, she draws attention to the fact that personnel entrusted with the implementation of orientation and vocational guidance at school must possess appropriate competences in this field themselves.

Opis:
The May Coup d’État of 1926 was a turning point in the activity of the Supreme Admini- strative Tribunal (Najwyższy Trybunał Administracyjny – NTA), in that it undermined the position of judges associated with the former Austrian Administrative Tribunal. Guarding the standards of Rechtsstaat the judges could not tolerate violations of law on the part of the government, e.g. the appointment of a General Election Commis- sioner in 1927. In particular, they couldn’t accept the behind-the-scenes pressure on an independent judiciary. The displacement of Jan Sawicki, president of the NTA, was a warning for all judges and a prelude to mass personnel purges. The reform of the administrative judiciary from 1932, as opposed to former reforms, completely ignored the reorganisation plan proposed by R. Różycki, another president of the NTA not bac- ked by the new government. The task of reforming the NTA was delegated to people who were trusted by the new government (Sanacja).

Second Republic of Poland
Opis:
The Regional Court in Zamość was established on 1 June 1918. When Poland regained its independence, it was staffed by the President, 4 regional judges, one of whom was a vice-president, 4 examining magistrates, a prosecutor and 3 subcurators. By the end of 1928, preceding the introduction of the judicial reform, there were 2 vice-presidents, additional posts for regional judges, a reserve examining magistrate and a sub-prosecutor. The President of the Regional Court in Zamość at that time was Romuald Jaśkiewicz. The first structure of the court was based on lawyers of Galician provenance, but most of them were soon transferred to the former Prussian Quarter in order to strengthen the Polish judiciary organised there, or left to serve in new central institutions of the Reborn Polish State. The vacant positions were filled by local sub-curators, examining judges and magistrates, as well as lawyers coming to the country from Russia, which was engulfed in civil war, who often had extensive judicial experience. The stories of their return to their homeland illustrate the complicated fate of Poles in the civil war-stricken Russia. It was very difficult to recruit local sworn attorneys or notaries for courts in Zamość. The reason was not only a small number of lawyers of Polish origin in the eastern part of the former Lublin province, but also the low salary of the regional judge. Already in that period, examining judges, and sometimes sub-curators and magistrates, were sent to substitute trainee judges, which became the norm over time. The personnel turnover in these positions was high, sometimes associated with promotion to the positions of regional judges. In the years 1918—1928, 6 examining judges, 2 sub-curators and 5 magistrates of the peace were promoted directly to the positions of regional judges in the Zamość region. Some distinguished judges, after being retired, received lucrative notarial positions. Among them was President Romuald Jaśkiewicz and 4 regional judges.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the careers of three personages from different strata of the nobility in Lesser Poland, who began their careers with activities for the Republic of Poland, and then devoted themselves to the service of the Catholic Church at the end of their lives. The fate of Aleksander Skrzyszowski, a minor nobleman and soldier, who became the parish priest of the municipal parish in Staszów and a canon in Poznań, is outlined first. He is followed by Hieronim Michał Komornicki, a middle-class nobleman, soldier and parliamentary activist, who died in 1689 as the abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Holy Cross. The last persondiscussed is Piotr Mikołaj Koryciński (1644–1680), the son of the chancellor, a regional assembly activist, royal secretary, diplomat, provost general of Miechów and bishop nominee of Chełmno. The article emphasizes the fact that the everyday life of the nobility was influenced by a strong engagement in State and Church affairs, while underlining the practice of publicly active nobleman obtaining church offices and dignities.

The memoirs of Professor Stanisław Salmonowicz titled Life escapes like a donkey published two years ago constitute the recapitulation of his own life and the scientific autobiography including extensive and important retrospective remarks concerning science and scientific circles in Poland and Europe in the second half of the 20th century. He particularly refers to historical sciences and historical-legal sciences. Against other valuable memoirs of scholars of the period of the Polish People’s Republic, the memoirs by Prof. Salmonowicz are characterized by the thorough description and analysis of attitudes and achievements of scientists and scientific circles in this period. Moreover, as one of the few testimonies of this kind, they stem from the experience of the scholars who, as it was defined by the author, „did not pact with totalitarianism”. Dozens of years of research and teaching in the most outstanding universities in Poland and abroad (despite difficulties generated by the communist authorities) makes the memoirs rich in unique knowledge about the history of science in Poland, particularly in the period of the Polish People’s Republic and to some extent also in the Third Polish Republic. It is of major importance as the research on the history of science and scientific circles in the Polish People’s Republic still remains very scarce. That is why the testimonies of active and important scholars of the period are so significant. They are frequently a more reliable source of information than preserved formal documentation; they allow us to understand how scientific institutions operated in Poland prior to and after 1989 and how it determined their work, development and achievements.

Opis:
Wyróżniono trzy drogi zdobycia niezależności: 1) przygotowanie do zawodu, dającego pewną możliwość podjęcia pracy zarobkowej; 2) kształcenie artystyczne; 3) naukę niejako „dla siebie”, z motywów autotelicznych. Prezentowany artykuł szczegółowo omawia pierwszą z owych dróg, poczynając od planów i oczekiwań bohaterek, poprzez okres studiów, aż do momentu podjęcia pracy zawodowej.
The article shows how the process of emancipation has been perceived by the minor (‘minorum gentium’) female novelists of the time, and indirectly – by their female readers, whose expectations surely did matter to the authors. The text concerns a fragment of a larger phenomenon – the chances of gaining an education which would allow the heroines of eight selected novels to function in the areas of job market previously occupied mostly or solely by men. Three different ways of gaining independence were distinguished: 1) learning a profession which would ensure a gainful employment; 2) artistic education; 3) an education, as it were, ‘for oneself’, without any further plans. In the following paper I have concentrated on the first of the abovementioned paths, starting from the plans and expectations of the heroines, through the period of studies up to the moment of starting work.

Opis:
Postać profesora Edmunda Bulandy doczekała się serii artykułów wspomnieniowych, dostrzeżono ją w tekstach dotyczących środowiska historyków i archeologów polskich we Lwowie, a w ostatnich latach wzbudziła spore zainteresowanie ukraińskich badaczy dziejów Uniwersytetu Jana Kazimierza we Lwowie. Większość z nich w ocenie akademickich dokonań prof. Bulandy, rektora kadencji 1938/1939, powiela i podziela opinię ucznia Bulandy, profesora Kazimierza Michałowskiego, który nadzwyczajne zaangażowanie archeologa lwowskiego w sprawy organizacyjne uniwersytetu dość enigmatycznie tłumaczy brakiem wiary w sens rozwoju polskiej archeologii klasycznej. E. Bulandy.
A series of memoirs was written concerning the persona of professor Edmund Bulanda, as well as various publications about the milieu of Polish historians and archaeologists in Lviv. In recent years it also aroused considerable interest of Ukrainian researchers of the history of the Jan Kazimierz University in Lviv. Majority of them, in the evaluation of academic achievements of professor Bulanda, former university’s President, share the opinion of his student, professor Kazimierz Michałowski. Michałowski quite enigmatically explained the extraordinary involvement of the Lviv archaeologist in the organizational matters of the university. According to him, this was due to Bulanda's lack of faith in the sense of the development of Polish classical archeology. However, nobody tries to explain whether Bulanda was indeed troubled by doubts, and if so, what was the reason for such an attitude. It seems that from the beginning of his Lviv career, the professor had a clear and modern vision of the development of Polish classical archeology. In 1919, a project was created to establish the State Archaeological Institute. Although it never happened, Bulanda took the strategic assumptions of this idea to heart. It was an institutional internationalization of research through the creation of a Polish scientific center in Rome and Athens and the training of a young generation of archaeologists outside Poland. He did not doubt the sense of the necessary changes, although in practice he had a possibility to implement only a small part of the original idea. Michałowski turned out to be much more effective in this field. However, he passed over earlier initiatives, which possibly had a negative impact on the image of Prof. E. Bulanda.
