The article describes qualitative research into the interpretation of the “life” phenomenon in 12 selected pre-school children. These are children with special educational needs from the Special Nursery School for children with more defects. Their individual disorders and handicaps may affect their comprehension of the life phenomenon. The research techniques applied were as follows: an analysis of children’s drawings, a non-structured interview and selection of pictures specially prepared in advance. The results achieved are presented in general, showing also several exemplary case studies of specific pupils with the specification of their handicap. The article discusses possible effects of children’s handicaps on the process of their forming comprehension of the common life phenomenon.

The purpose of this article is to present research conducted in Poland enabling the evaluation of the structure and level of perceptual musical abilities of thirdgrade students finishing their early-school education. The evaluation was based on A. Weiner’s Test of Perceptual Musical Abilities which examines important areas of music perception, including the complex structure of the abilities. The research presented herein is unique and the analysis of differences in gender-related results provides essential information on the strong and weak aspects of the skills. The research does not confirm the numerous reports indicating the superiority of girls in music tests.

Celem autorki było określenie poziomu umiejętności nominacyjnych dzieci w wieku od czterech do sześciu lat, a także zbadanie, czy nadając nazwy nowym zabawkom, dzieci ze wskazanej grupy wiekowej robią to w sposób losowy czy też proces ten nosi znamiona systemowości. Przeanalizowano metody stosowane przez dzieci w tworzeniu nazw. Rozważono, jakie elementy rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej są utrwalane w chrematonimii dziecięcej. This paper aims to investigate the level of naming skills of children between four and six years of age and to check if pre-schoolers, while naming new toys on the ad-hoc basis, do it randomly or whether the process is systemic. The methods, as well as the elements of extra-linguistic reality, used in the creation of names by children are analyzed. Moreover, efforts were made to deepen the study by analysing the influence of socio-cultural factors such as age and gender on nomination skills of children.

Aim. The article provides a new solution to the problem of the formation of sustainable development competencies in primary school students. The objective of the article is to substantiate the method of forming sustainable development competencies in primary school students and to reflect it in the model. Methods. The main research methods are observation, test, interview, questionnaire, analysis of media works, expert evaluation, and pedagogical experiment. A set of diagnostic tools has been specified. Results and Conclusions. The efficiency of the developed technique has been proved with the results obtained from the experiment: the partnership of teachers, students and parents contributes to sustainability competencies formation; implementation of common areas of media education and education for sustainable development evidenced to feasibility of the research, namely: education in legal, economic aspects, creation of media products with a projection to sustainable development, learning critical perception of mass media information, sustainability goals orientation. Due to the introduction of the experimental methodology, the number of students with high (12.07%) and satisfactory (14.65%) levels of the key competencies in the field of sustainable development increased against the background of a decrease in the number of respondents with sufficient (12.93%) and low (13.79%) levels. Originality. Emphasis is placed on the features of the designed methodology: application of partnership pedagogy and pedagogy of empowerment, integration of education for sustainable development with media education, compliance with a number of pedagogical conditions, forms and methods.

The article covers topical problems related to the group dynamics theory and practice in play and games in nurseries. It offers a brief overview of various research findings in the pedagogy, social psychology, cultural theories and mass media. According to the authors, play activities and games recreate social interactions of people. These activities broaden children’s views and enhance interaction skills. They should be regarded as part of children’s upbringing and education. Activities based on play and games in pre-schools are related to other factors which develop and foster children’s social skills. The findings of the present study verify that group dynamics in play and games among children mirrors children’s social behaviour and helps children build up and enhance their interaction skills.

Introduction: Proper nutrition and physical activity are very important elements in the proper functioning and development of children. The lack of daily, systematic physical effort in younger and younger age groups is a public health problem. Purpose: To evaluate the nutrition and physical activity of children attending primary school. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among 707 pupils form randomly selected elementary schools using the authors’ own questionnaire in the school year 2013/2014. The questionnaire included questions on selected dietary habits and physical activity as well as the socio-economic conditions of the families. Results: Among the studied children, 88.6% consumed 4 or 5 meals a day. There was a statistically significant relationship between the number of meals consumed and the age of the children. Breakfast was consumed by 86.4% of children, more often residents of the city than the village (88.0% vs. 81.7%, p <0.05). Daily consum-ption of second breakfast was declared by 71.5% of boys and 74.2% of girls. The vast majority of the studied students (86.8%) have always taken part in physical education classes. Outdoor leisure time was declared by 75% of the surveyed children. Rural students showed greater involvement in outdoor activities than students from the city (86.1% vs. 70.2%, p <0.001). A total of 62.2% of boys and 51.8% of girls (p <0.05) participated in sports activities. Conclusions: Inappropriate nutrition and lack of physical activity affected both girls and boys, and the abnormalities were dependent on where they lived and were age-related.

Introduction. Obesity in children and adolescents is a growing problem in the 21st century. The epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases resulting from obesity is currently one of the biggest problems of modern medicine. Excessive body weight is the result of a long-lasting imbalance between the amount of energy supplied and its expenditure. Energy regulation of the body is subject to both genetic and environmental factors. Among other things, due to this, the problem of excessive body weight is most severe in societies with a high degree of socio-economic development. The aim of this paper is to determine the influence of selected environmental and social factors on the occurrence of overweight and obesity in pre-school children. Material and methods. The study included pre-school children from south-eastern Poland. After obtaining the consent from parents, 200 children (87 boys, 113 girls) aged 3 to 6 years were examined. A questionnaire used for the research was derived from the program: European Pilot Study Evaluating the Influence of Local Promotional Activities on Prevention of Obesity in Pre-school Children. In the subjects, body weight was measured on an electronic scale three times and the body height was measured three times using a stadiometer. Obesity was determined according to the criteria developed by the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF). Results. The prevalence of overweight and obesity among children amounted to 6.4% in 3-year-olds, 11.3% in 4-year-olds, 17.7% in 5-year-olds, and 20.7% in 6-year-olds. A factor significantly increasing the risk of obesity among the examined girls and boys was the mother’s BMI index. Conclusion. Although knowledge about the factors that promote overweight and obesity is common, it is still a common health problem. Particular attention should be paid to the prevention of obesity in children of parents with a BMI above 30 kg m2. Early maternal education can change the lifestyle of the whole family.

Background. The nutrition of pre-school children often does not follow the recommendations, and qualitatively and quantitatively limited selection of products in the diet shapes an attitude of aversion towards new products and dishes. The risk of deficiencies in many important nutrients emerges, particularly in vitamins and mineral components, which can affect the psychophysical development of the child and have an impact on nutritional status and health disorders in adulthood. Objective. Study of dietary preferences in pre-school children and identify possible food aversions. Material and methods. Nutritional preferences of pre-school children in Olsztyn were examined using a questionnaire prepared in a graphic form, presenting images of 40 food products classified into 5 groups, and the acceptance level and knowledge of the product was established. Results. The values of Cole’s index proving the proper nutritional status of pre-school children were obtained for about 87% of the examined group, excessive nutrition was observed in more than 4% of the examined group, about 2% of the group demonstrated obesity and mild malnutrition was observed in about 7% of the examined children. A high acceptance rate of sweets and fast-food products by children was observed. A high degree of preference for milk was recorded, as well as traditional and cognitive aversion for kefir. In the group of fruit and vegetables, both a high degree of preference and aversions to all indicated vegetables and fruit were observed. Taste determined the results, with high acceptance for the sweet taste and rejection or a neutral attitude towards sour and bitter products Conclusions. Food aversions, by reducing the intake of food products, can result in nutritional deficiencies, affecting the psychosomatic development and cognitive abilities of the child. Traditional and cognitive food aversions was observed towards kefir, cheeses and most of vegetables. A high level of preference was observed in relation towards sweet and fast food products and a low acceptance level for selected vegetables, fruits and dairy products.
Wprowadzenie. Żywienie dzieci przedszkolnych często nie odpowiada zaleceniom, ograniczony ilościowo i jakościowo dobór produktów w diecie kształtuje postawę niechęci wobec nowych produktów i potraw. Pojawia się ryzyko niedoborów wielu ważnych substancji odżywczych, głównie witamin i składników mineralnych, które rzutować mogą na rozwój psychofizyczny dziecka i wpływać na stan odżywienia i zaburzenia zdrowia w dorosłości. Cel. Badanie preferencji żywieniowych dzieci przedszkolnych i określenie możliwych awersji pokarmowych. Materiał i metody. Preferencje żywieniowe dzieci przedszkolnych badano z zastosowaniem kwestionariusza opracowanego w formie graficznej, przedstawiającego obrazy 40. produktów spożywczych podzielonych na 5 grup i określano stopień akceptacji oraz znajomość produktu. Wyniki. Wartości wskaźnika Cole’a, świadczące o prawidłowym stanie odżywienia dzieci przedszkolnych, uzyskano dla blisko 87% badanej grupy, nadmierne odżywienie wykazano u ponad 4% badanych, około 2% grupy charakteryzowała otyłość a u około 7% badanych dzieci zaobserwowano nieznaczne niedożywienie. Zaobserwowano wysoką akceptację słodyczy i produktów typu fast-food wśród badanych dzieci. Zanotowano wysoki stopień preferencji dla mleka i awersję tradycyjną i poznawczą do kefiru. W grupie owoców i warzyw zaobserwowano zarówno wysoki stopień preferencji jak i awersje do wszystkich wskazanych warzyw i owoców. O wyniku decydował smak, charakterystyczna była wysoka akceptacja dla smaku słodkiego i odrzucanie lub obojętny stosunek do produktów kwaśnych i gorzkich. Wnioski. Awersje pokarmowe poprzez ograniczenie spożycia produktów spożywczych mogą skutkować niedoborami pokarmowymi, wpływając na rozwój psychosomatyczny i możliwości poznawcze dziecka. Awersje tradycyjne i poznawcze zaobserwowano względem kefiru, serów oraz większości warzyw. Wysoki poziom preferencji zaobserwowano w relacji do produktów słodkich i żywności typu ‘fast-food’, a niski poziom akceptacji dla wybranych warzyw, owoców i produktów nabiałowych.

This study explored multicultural pedagogy in pre-school education and how it plays an important role in strengthening the social interactions among children. The Multicultural Pedagogy approach in teaching children has established the multi-ethnic (PERPADUAN/Unity) pre-school. It is a qualitative study with data drawn from observation and interview sessions aimed to identify strategies in nurturing social interaction among multi-ethnic children. Through purposive sampling, a teacher with twenty-five children and parents from various ethnicities were selected. This study revealed that practising multicultural pedagogy reflects the diversity of ethnics strengthening social interaction. The teacher exposed the children to the cultures of every ethnic group to ensure they have understood other cultures from different ethnicity. When the children are exposed to the elements of different cultures, a sense of acceptance and tolerance attitude can be fostered. This strategy nurtured national integration, encouraging interactions among multi-ethnic children, stimulating acceptance and tolerance between children and creating a school environment that reflects the diversity of ethnicities. Core multicultural elements have been found in the PERPADUAN/Unity School. Overall findings from the current study provide new evidence illustrating how multicultural pedagogy implemented strengthens social interaction in early childhood education.

Introduction: Distorted processing of auditory information has a negative impact on the child’s cognitive development. There are only a few studies conducted by Polish researchers determining the normative values of psychoacoustic tests in auditory processing disorders. They are inconsistent due to different methodologies and different research protocols. Objective: The aim of the work was to determine the reference values of selected psychoacoustic tests for the population of Polish children between 7 and 12 years of age. Material and method: The study group consisted of 213 healthy children from 7 to 12 years of age. The condition for including the child in the study was an intellectual norm, proper sound sensitivity, proper development of children’s voice and speech. All children underwent two auditory temporal processing tests. The diagnostic procedure used a standardized Frequency Pattern Test (FPT) and Duration Pattern Test (DPT). The tests were carried out in accordance with the authors’ recommendations, using the original versions available on the CD for 60 dB SL intensity, simultaneously for the right and left ear. Results: The reference values for FPT and DPT tests were determined at various age ranges in children aged 7–12. It has been shown that auditory functions change with age and development of the child. Reference values including age, language, cultural and educational differences were prepared. Conclusions: The development of reference values for individual tests for the Polish children population is a key element in the reliable diagnosis of auditory processing.

Current developments of scientifi c thinking in the fi eld of education, are increasingly de-manding in various disciplines for young people as a matter of urgency. It is already known that child development is conditioned by ancestry, socio-cultural environment, including interaction with peers and adults. Albanian institutions (kindergarten) compared to contem-porary experience in more developed countries have to deal with issues such as: (1) The de-velopment of a run or optimal acceleration enrichment motor for kindergarten children, seen as an important element of the formation of the human personality and its preparation to cope with various situations of life ; (2) The role of infrastructure in the natural development of the personality of children and the educational process as a whole; (3) Parental community involvement as a fundamental prerequisite of real development of the child; (4) The qualifi -cation level of the teaching staff in the elementary education system and the preparation of students teacher. I hope to add my contribution through this paper, not only by identifying the problems abo-ve, but also in presenting alternatives of a development model of kindergarten children motors skills progress, compared to contemporary experience in more developed countries.
