Opis:
Laser induced fluorescence is a powerful spectroscopic technique commonly used to study the structure and internal state distributions in molecules of biological interest. Betanin $(C_{24}H_{26}N_{2}O_{13})$ is a specific violet betacyanin and the most prominent pigment in the red beet root where it contributes to 75-95% of the total visible color. Our method of excitation of the beet root extract is based on the tunable (320 nm to 475 nm) Nd:YAG laser system. Fluorescence images of beet root extract excited at 320, 340, 360 and 400 nm were obtained. The fluorescence is observed in range from 580 nm to 660 nm. The influence of the solution concentrations on the fluorescence intensity is also analyzed.

Opis:
The present communication reports a rapid, uncomplicated, sustainable and facile method of eco-friendly synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The pressing need for the development of benign, profitable and eco-friendly alternative routes has inspired researchers to explore plant extracts as safer replacements to hazardous chemicals. In the present study, a benign method of synthesis of AgNPs using Soymida febrifuga aqueous root extract has been developed. The characterization studies of synthesized AgNPs revealed spherical morphology and crystalline nature of AgNPs. The average particle size was 21.81 nm. The synthesized AgNPs were employed as mercury nanosensor for the selective and sensitive detection of toxic mercury ions in water and soil samples. The AgNPs showed a marked visual color change and change in surface plasmon resonance band on interaction with mercury ions. The greater selectivity of AgNPs towards mercury ions was observed. The limit of detection of mercury by 100 μL of colloidal AgNPs was found to be 2×10-4 M visually and 1.332×10-5 M spectrophotometrically in water samples and ×-4 M visually and 22.3×10-5 M spectrophotometrically in soil samples. The method makes use of a small quantity of AgNPs for detection of mercury in water and soil samples. The method proposed in the present study provides a rapid, selective and sensitive method for detection of mercury ions in environmental water and soil samples. The synthesized AgNPs were also used as effective microbicidal agents. The microbicidal potential of the synthesized AgNPs was checked against two gram positive and gram negative bacterial strains.

In the study, the possibility of an application of Ajuga reptans leaf and root extracts in antipollution cosmetics was investigated. The influence of Ajuga extracts on the skin condition was also evaluated. Both leaf and root Ajuga ethanolic extracts were obtained and added to the developed cosmetic formulations. Two types of emulsion W/O and O/W, washing gels and eye serum, containing as an active substance Ajuga extracts were prepared. For the stable formulations physicochemical and user properties were studied. The obtained results show that cosmetic products, containing the Ajuga reptans extracts, positively affect the skin condition: causing an improvement in the degree of skin hydration and elasticity, reducing the skin pores size and skin hyperpigmentation, and reducing the wrinkles depth.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of Citrosept preparation and Scutellaria baicalensis root extract, administered per os to growing turkey hens in 3 different dosages, on the content of selected mineral elements in blood plasma of slaughter turkey hens. An attempt was also made to specify the most effective dosage of the applied preparations with the highest efficiency regarding increased levels of examined macro- and microelements in the birds’ blood. The research experiment was conducted on 315 turkey hens randomly divided into seven groups, each consisting of 45 turkey hens. Group C constituted the control group without experimental additions of the above-mentioned preparations. In turkey hens in groups II–IV, Citrosept preparation was instilled to water in the following dosages: Group II – 0.011 ml/kg of bm; Group III – 0.021 ml/kg of bm; Group IV – 0.042 ml/kg bm. For birds which belonged to groups V–VII, a preparation of Scutellaria baicalensis root extract was instilled to water in the following dosages: Group V – 0.009 ml/kg of bm; Group VI – 0.018 ml/kg of bm, Group VII – 0.036 ml/kg bm. In the examined plant extracts and blood plasma of the birds the levels of Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cu, Zn, and Fe were identified. The use of examined extracts influenced changes in the levels of all tested elements in slaughter turkey hens’ blood plasma. An upward tendency was recorded in the level of calcium and magnesium, and a downward tendency of sodium, potassium, copper, zinc, and iron in relation to the results achieved in the control group.

Opis:
Both seed and root extracts of the medicinal plant, Ashwagandha, Withania somnifera exhibit insect growth regulatory activity against the polyphagous pest, Pericallia ricini. Topical administration of W. somnifera seed and root extracts to last instar larvae of P. ricini disrupted moulting and metamorphosis, leading to a number of developmental abnormalities such as delay in larval-pupal and pupal-adult ecdysis, formation of larval-pupal, pupal- -adult and larval-pupal-adult mosaics/chimeras, ecdysial failure, suppression of pupation and adult emergence and formation of abnormal pupae and adultoids. The treatment with seed extracts was more severe than that of root extracts as it completely suppressed the pupation and adult emergence. The results clearly suggest that the medicinal plant, W. somnifera acts as a potential insect growth regulatory (IGR) disrupting the moulting and metamorphosis as a consequence of interference with the endocrine system.

Pelargonium sidoides DC is an interesting plant with various biological properties. Pharmaceutical companies and manufacturers of food supplements are particularly interested in its beneficial effects in upper respiratory tract infections. The search for new therapeutic options is especially important at a time when antibiotics are prescribed too often. However, due to proven clinical effects of extracts from Pelargonium sidoides, their use in diet supplements, especially intended for infants and small children, is highly disputable. The paper presents reports on the use of Pelargonium sidoides extracts in paediatrics and also tries to answer the question whether the pelargonium extract should be qualified as food supplement or medicine.

Opis:
The effects of water extracts of Chenopodium album leaves and roots on the growth of grass weed (Setaria viridis) and broad leaf weed (Corchorus olitorius) grown with beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) in greenhouse pots were studied in the National Research Centre, Giza, Egypt. In this experiment fresh leaf and root extracts and their corresponding dry leaf and root extracts at different concentrations were used. There were significant inhibitions in the dry weights of S. viridis and C. olitorius by all extracts at the flowering stage of beans and at harvest. The inhibition effect of all C. album extracts on both weeds (dry weight/pot) depended on the extracted plant organ (leaf or root), its fresh or dry form as well as its concentrations. The inhibition caused by the leaf extract was much higher on weed growth than that of root extract. A higher concentration of fresh leaf extract (25%) had the highest significant inhibition effect. The results also indicated that C. olitorius was more sensitive to the extracts than S. viridis. On the other hand, the inhibition effect of the extracts on the growth of both weeds was accompanied by increased bean growth and yield/plant. The analysis of both leaf and root extracts of C. album revealed that the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids in the leaf extract was more than triple that of the root extract. The results suggested that the fresh leaf extract of C. album may be a possible tool for the development of weed control using natural herbicides.

Betalains are one of the most common groups of plant pigments found in nature, especially in red beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) which is the main commercially exploited source of betalains produced in the form of concentrates or powders. This report presents results of thermal decarboxylation studies on betacyanins present in a specifically purified highly concentrated betalain-rich extract (BRE). The first tentative structures formed by decarboxylation of the main pigment present in BRE, betanin and its diastereomer, were established by means of liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detection and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (LC-DAD-ESI-MS/MS). In the extract, two new isomeric bidecarboxylated betanins were tentatively identified. A high rate of generation of 2-decarboxy-betanin/-isobetanin which are present in the BRE extract at very low level was observed, which was dependent on the starting concentration of the BRE substrate. The bidecarboxylated derivatives were generated at a higher rate mostly from 17-decarboxy-betanin/-isobetanin as well as 15-decarboxy-betanin by further decarboxylation at carbon C-2. Further studies will be performed to demonstrate if the decarboxylated betanins being products of heating B. vulgaris preparations can be used for various food applications with new health-promoting actions and colorant properties.
