    In the article the problems of relations between supervisors and subordinates are presented. The author tried to find the answer to the question if they are partners or rivals. Seeking this answer three research goals were to be realized and research hypothesis was to be verified that the way of treating subordinates by supervisors was a key determinant of subordinates’ contentment. The results of the correspondence analysis applied towards the field data allowed to confirm the hypothesis. Six other variables were analyzed in the article too. The character and power of potential dependences between them and respondents’ contentment and their openness to recommend the employer were studied. It allowed for hierarchical ordering of identified dependences and drawing important conclusions having cognitive and applicable value.

    The paper tries to address attention to the recent phenomenon of large-scale land acquisitions (LSLAs) made by foreign investors in low-income agriculture-based countries. Since 2008, the phenomenon of LSLAs has increased at a very high speed and at a growing scale, although it has assumed different connotations, compared with previous LSLAs, with particular reference to the space concerned (the phenomenon has a global dimension), to the motivations behind it, to the way in which the acquisitions have been made, not to mention the impacts produced on local populations and the environment. The aim of the paper is that of contributing to examine, from the economic theory historic-analytical perspective, some aspects of contemporary LSLAs, global land and water grabbing in particular, which seem passed generally unnoticed. The main thesis will be that the dominant economic theory (neoclassical economics) appears indeed as an invisible though crucial driver of that phenomenon, in so far as it profoundly shapes the ‘vision’ which supposedly lies at the very background of most of the subjects and of the policy makers and institutions involved. It is suggested that an alternative ‘vision’ should be used instead – the contemporary classical economic theory rivaled by Sraffa in the 1960s.

    In this paper, I employ the method of reflective equilibrium to analyse background conditions of our considered judgements about distributive justice generated by a thought experiment called “Three Children and a Flute”, proposed and interestingly commented upon by Amartya Sen in his book The Idea of Justice. I claim that, contrary to Sen’s conclusions drawn from the thought experiment, for the utilitarian and egalitarian visions of distributive justice to hold other things about distribution of resources and social life that we are not willing to accept must be true and that it is not the case then that it is a ‘difficult decision’ to make what pattern of distribution should prevail in the thought experiment. To boot, I hold that libertarian or natural pattern of distribution does not presuppose these background conditions that we are not willing to accept and which are presupposed by egalitarian and utilitarian distributive patterns. I conclude that taking into consideration the fact that there is a plethora of inconsistencies, counter-intuitive consequences and anti-scientific implications of the utilitarian and egalitarian solutions to the thought experiment, it is a natural pattern of distribution that prevails in the ‘flute dilemma’.
    Artykuł ten analizuje za pomocą metody równowagi refleksyjnej warunki tła naszych rozważnych sądów na temat sprawiedliwości dystrybutywnej, wygenerowanych przez eksperyment myślowy określany mianem „Trójki dzieci i fletu”. Eksperyment ten został zaproponowany i w interesujący sposób skomentowany przez Amartya Sena w jego książce pod tytułem The Idea of Justice. W swym artykule stawiam tezę, że – w przeciwieństwie do konkluzji, które Sen wywiódł z tego eksperymentu myślowego – aby utylitarna i egalitarna wizja sprawiedliwości dystrybutywnej mogła pozostać w mocy, szereg innych twierdzeń dotyczących życia społecznego oraz dystrybucji zasobów, których nie jesteśmy chętni zaakceptować, musi być prawdziwych. Argumentuję również, że nie jest prawdą twierdzenie Sena, iż zdecydowanie o tym, który ze wzorców dystrybucji powinien przeważyć w tym eksperymencie myślowym, nie jest wcale „trudne”. Co więcej, twierdzę też, że tzw. naturalny czy libertariański model dystrybucji nie zakłada tych samych warunków tła, co utylitarny i egalitarny model dystrybucji, a których to warunków nie jesteśmy skłonni zaakceptować. W artykule swym dochodzę do wniosku, że biorąc pod uwagę cały szereg niespójności, nieintuicyjnych konsekwencji oraz sprzecznych z doniesieniami nauk szczegółowych implikacji rozwiązań utylitarystycznych i egalitarystycznych, to naturalny model dystrybucji stanowi jedyne rozwiązanie dylematu fletu.

    As expressed in the EU-China 2020 Strategic Agenda for Cooperation adopted in 2013, the European Union and the People’s Republic of China are committed to a comprehensive strategic partnership. The new nature of Chinese foreign policy under the leadership of Xi Jinping has caused new problems in European-Chinese relationships. The rise of China to a position of global superpower, symbolized by the Belt and Road Initiative, has changed the conditions for EU-China relations and created a necessity for Europe to revise its approach or even to profoundly change the way it perceives relations with Beijing.The goal of this article is to discuss EU policy towards China between 2013 and 2019 in the context of these new conditions and the changing perception of China in Europe. The rethinking process on the side of the EU was symbolized by describing China as a systemic rival in the strategic outlook presented by the European Commission in March 2019. The main research question is: how did public debate in Europe around the term systemic rival, and the change in perception of China it caused, correspond with the actual state of EU-China relationships on the level of political practice? The hypothesis, that the commotion caused by the use of the term systemic rival created a distorted impression of the current state of EU-China relations will be tested by analyzing specific cases of the operationalization of EU policy such as investment screening frameworks, European industrial policy and the major political EU-China visits and summits in 2019.

    L'article propose d'analyser, dans une optique comparatiste, les objectifs et les spécificités de la caricature graphique d'Honoré Daumier et de la caricature littéraire de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam. Par son projet de vengeance satirique sur les bourgeois, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam se réclame de la méthode de Daumier, fondée sur l'ironie, et envisage de dépasser le dessinateur. Dans la présentation de l'univers bourgeois et des milieux choisis (journalistique, artistique) le dessinateur et l'écrivain élaborent leurs propres façons d'exploiter les ressources de la caricature. Tout en dénonçant les vices de la société, Daumier propose un type particulier de comique (dans lequel la légende joue un rôle secondaire) et développe l'aspect ludique de son art, tandis que Villiers se concentre sur la raillerie violente, même si sa caricature relève souvent de l'ambiguïté. Érigée en genre littéraire, la caricature villiérienne relie le portrait déformé à la caricature langagière et celle de situation, en élargissant ainsi les sens véhiculés par le dessin de Daumier.
    This article analyzes, from a comparative perspective, the aims and the characteristics of two types of caricature: Honoré Daumier’s graphic caricature and Villiers de l’Isle-Adam’s literary one. For the purposes of his satiric revenge on bourgeoisie, Villiers resorted, by means of irony, to Daumier’s method, even trying to overshadow him. In their way of presenting the world of bourgeoisie and selected social groups (journalist and artistic ones), this draughtsman and this writer worked out their own means of the use of caricature. Without stopping stigmatising the vices of society, Daumier proposed a peculiar kind of caricature (in which an explanation played a secondary role) and developed the ludic aspect of his art, whereas Villiers was focused on mockery, even though his caricatures were often ambiguous. Villiers’ caricature, which even became a literary genre, connects a distorted portrait with a linguistic and situational caricature, by which means it makes the sense, formed by Daumier’s image, broader.

    The article aims at presenting two opposite socio-philosophical stances, to which most of research on power within the framework of discourse studies can be attributed. These outlooks are represented by the names of Noam Chomsky and Michel Foucault. The discussion between these intellectuals constitutes the basis for the comparative analysis presented in the article. The competing approaches to the following questions are juxtaposed: what is political power, why power relations need to be analyzed and possibly changed, what is the role of ideas like “struggle”, “freedom” or “justice” in these processes. For many researchers interested in discursive manifestations of power relations, this set of notions delineates the scope of normatively legitimate pragmatic issues inscribed into the research practice. The aim of the paper is to closely examine the assumptions underlying the rival solutions to the above mentioned issues. This is achieved by presenting the contrasting arguments used as a means for the justification of legitimacy and moral rightness of each standpoint.
    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie dwóch przeciwstawnych stanowisk filozoficzno-nau- kowych, do których można przyporządkować dużą część badań nad władzą prowadzonych w ramach analizy dyskursu. Sygnowane są one nazwiskami Noama Chomsky’ego i Michela Foucault. Podstawą ich prezentacji jest dyskusja, w której udział wzięli obaj uczeni. Artykuł przedstawia opozycyjne spojrzenia na to, czym jest władza polityczna, co jest celem jej bada- nia i ewentualnej zmiany oraz jaką rolę odgrywają w tych procesach takie pojęcia jak: walka, wolność czy sprawiedliwość. Dla wielu badaczy dyskursowych przejawów relacji władzy ten zestaw terminów wyznacza sferę umocowanych normatywnie konkretnych problemów wpisanych w praktykę badawczą. Tekst stawia sobie zadanie prześledzenia przesłanek dwóch sposobów teoretyczno-badawczego rozwiązania tych kwestii, poprzez zaprezentowanie czę- ściowo przeciwstawnych argumentów służących nadaniu własnej optyce prawomocności lub moralnej słuszności.
