The dynamics of the cultural landscape is associated with the penetration of people into the natural landscape, the settling and adaptation to the needs of the society and its development. Climate creates the decisive influence, specifically the form of extremely high rainfall causing flooding. Adverse impact on the cultural agricultural landscape is mainly the submersion time. This time depends on the configuration of the terrain, its disposition and the existing drainage ditches in the area, ensuring the drainage of the flood to the recipients. Long-lasting floods have stipulated taking measures for the protection of the area from flooding by building dikes and drainage of the flood from the area. Identifying the extent of extreme floods and zones of permanent waterlogging is currently provided by modern technology which allows recording satellite images in different spectral bands. Within the basic distinguishing signs mainly accruing is used and it is possible to track changes of the extent of flooded areas and thus identify problem areas insufficiently protected against long-term flooding. Consequently, it is possible to solve the concept of exploiting such areas to keep them in the structure of PPF or their reclassification in wetland systems with necessary legislative security. The aim of this paper is to show the possibility of using satellite images in identifying the extent of flooding.

At present, climate change is particularly evident in areas heavily used by man. Such localities are mainly urbanized areas. With the increment in urban area and construction related to urban development, the hydrological regime of such sites is disrupted. When the natural character of the surface has changed, where precipitation, evapotranspiration and outflow of water from the area has been balanced, there is now an increase in territories that are impermeable and caused almost 100% runoff. The influence of the built-up area on the temperature increase in urbanized areas in comparison with the surrounding landscape is also known as a thermal island. The identification of the current status and possible potential interventions in the water regime of cities is provided by the possibility of using information obtained from the satellite monitoring of the Earth's surface. The range of areas in urbanized areas contributing to runoff can be ascertained by remote sensing, where in particular using multispectral images, where it is possible to distinguish surface characteristics using LAI and controlled image classification. At the same time, it is possible to identify areas that could be used to create space for rainwater infiltration and its accumulation below the surface. The paper evaluates the extent of changes in land use in Nitra from 1954 to 2017. The growth of areas with minimal infiltration capacity in the area of the Slovak University of Agriculture is identified. Possibilities of use of rainwater and their accumulation in the monitored area are analyzed.

Space information, or information obtained by means of space remote sensing, is widely and effectively used by many countries to solve a lot of scientific, technical and applied problems. Most manufacturers of space remote sensing systems declared the high resolution values of their systems. However, these values are computed theoretically, without considering the various factors affected them. To determine the real resolution of the system, we have considered mathematical modeling which describes the influence of different factors on the satellite images resolution. Some of these factors are: atmosphere turbulence, image shift, residual defocusing, and diffraction. One of the most important characteristic of the images resolution is the modulation transfer function (MTF) which allows the estimation of different factors affected on the image resolution. The modulation transfer function (MTF) is a fundamental tool for assessing the performance of imaging systems. Various authors [Zhang et al. 2012, Hwang et al. 2008, Ryan et al. 2003] investigate diferent MTF assessment methods of high resolution satellite images: a slant-edge method, a knife-edge method, a sine wave method and a grill pattern. We propose a generalized approach for MTF assessment based on theoretical assumptions which allows to determine the inluence of diferent factors. A comparative analysis of the modulation transfer function(s) for different space imaging systems shows that the image resolution depends mainly on the atmosphere turbulence and size of a sensor element. Additionally, we established that atmospheric turbulence significantly reduces the transmitting possibility of images. The parameters which describe the influence of turbu¬lence required additional studies. The main goal of our researches is to show that real spatial image(s) resolution is much "inferior" than the value provided by the manufacturers of space remote sensing systems.

Ship motion affects quality of acoustic data collected by various acoustic remote sensing systems used for bottom and fisheries surveying. The angular position of an acoustic beam changes in time from its nominal position vertical to sea surface. This motion affects the acoustic returns from the bottom and other targets by changing their intensity and arrival times. In this paper we illustrate these effects on bottom returns obtained using single beam sonar.

Aerial photographs are a source of geological information that may be unobtainable elsewhere. If the fullest use is to be made of this information for the purpose of geological mapping, there must be a planned integration of the photogeological work with the field and laboratory investigations. The appearance of the first satellites for civil purposes on the beginning of the 1970s (such as ERTS – Landsat series), of most land areas of the Earth has provided new opportunity for photogeologists. Many areas can now be studied and mapped geologically for which neither adequate maps nor vertical aerial photograps were available. The advantages of the present satellite systems and examples of their application by specialists of the Polish Geological Institute are presented in this paper. Nowadays, it is practically impossible to imagine performing geological mapping without application of remote sensing data and analysis. Development of new technologies is very fast and new borne techniques are coming like permanent scatter interferometry, laser scanning etc. However, we should always remember, that they are only very useful tools to help geologists in their field mapping art and practise.

The field of remote sensing is an area of science and technology that has undergone rapid development in recent years. This paper focuses primarily on how to exploit the capabilities made available by remote sensing and how to put them to use by combining them with a sys-temic approach to design and analysis in various measurement and control applications. The emphasis is placed on high-resolution satellite and Lidar sensors – the most prevalent remote sensing technologies. Following the presentation of some general issues related to low- and high-level processing of remote sensing data, such as data dimensionality reduction, data fusion, and change detection, the paper provides examples of control-related applications of remote sensing technologies. It is argued that successful exploitation of new generations of remote sensing technologies will require extensive development of new algorithms based on a variety of approaches, such as machine vision, statistical learning, and artificial intelligence.

The paper investigates the application of digital modulation access technique called Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) to remote sensing of a seafloor. In a traditional sonar, the next ping cannot be sent until the echo from previous transmission has been received by the sonar transducer. As a result, such a sonar system is characterized by low duty ratio what causes the decrease of data resolution especially for larger depths. Using the CDMA modulation technique, may reduce pulse repetition rate. In the CDMA technique, each sonar pulse consists of several multiple narrow pulses, where each is encoded with a phase shift 0 or đ based on a spreading code. The paper presents the performance investigation results for this modulation scheme as applied both to transmitted and seafloor backscattered signal. The bottom backscattering was modeled numerically for typical bottom material and morphology. The advantages and constraints of the proposed technique were discussed in the context of echo detection and usefulness in acoustic seafloor characterization.

Active surface reflectance in a UV/VIS/NIR range deserve special attention among remote sensing techniques due to the potential of information it carries. Data are diversified in terms of spatial, spectral and temporal resolution, resulting in differences in data comparison and collection of material that may be redundant. The aim of the study was to assess whether the use of high-resolution data in analysis of an intensively used meadow is justified. 116 images from Planet sensor were analysed, registered from 2016 to 2019. NDVI, EVI and GLI were calculated for all of the terms. Resampling of data was carried out, with the use of 30 m grid, prepared on the basis of 3 m Planet pixel. Data with different resolution was compared. Seasonal course of values was similar in all cases, values of chosen deciles were nearly the same, however, differences in minimum and maximum values were noted.  It was concluded that the use of high-resolution data is not advisable in the context of the spatial variability of seasonal vegetation indices in the case of a terrain with homogeneous land cover. Values of structurally simplified indices are less homogeneous than that of indicators consisting of a greater number of modifying factors.

With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, our ability to obtain remote sensing data has been improved to an unprecedented level. We have entered an era of big data. Remote sensing data clear showing the characteristics of Big Data such as hyper spectral, high spatial resolution, and high time resolution, thus, resulting in a significant increase in the volume, variety, velocity and veracity of data. This paper proposes a feature supporting, salable, and efficient data cube for time-series analysis application, and used the spatial feature data and remote sensing data for comparative study of the water cover and vegetation change. In this system, the feature data cube building and distributed executor engine are critical in supporting large spatiotemporal RS data analysis with spatial features. The feature translation ensures that the geographic object can be combined with satellite data to build a feature data cube for analysis. Constructing a distributed executed engine based on dask ensures the efficient analysis of large-scale RS data. This work could provide a convenient and efficient multidimensional data services for many remote sensing applications.

The article presents the use of satellite images in the determination of forest fire danger rating categories. The assessment was carried out based on images from the LANDSAT TM, IKONOS and NOAA satellites, with the finding that the LANDSAT TM images are the most useful. A new solution proposed is to make forest fire danger rating categories refer to forest ranger sub-districts, what gives the forest service greater control over forest fire prevention activities. Forest fire danger assessment was done taking into account remote sensing indices such as the NDVI, TNDVI, and IHT, as well by the analysis of the spatial distribution and the number of fires in the previous six years. In accordance with the Polish State Forest Classification System, three classes were specified: 1 - high fire danger, 2 - moderate fire danger, 3 - low fire danger.

Of late, the science of Remote Sensing has been gaining a lot of interest and attention due to its wide variety of applications. Remotely sensed data can be used in various fields such as medicine, agriculture, engineering, weather forecasting, military tactics, disaster management etc. only to name a few. This article presents a study of the two categories of sensors namely optical and microwave which are used for remotely sensing the occurrence of disasters such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, avalanches, tropical cyclones and suspicious movements. The remotely sensed data acquired either through satellites or through ground based-synthetic aperture radar systems could be used to avert or mitigate a disaster or to perform a post-disaster analysis.

The method has been developed for recognition of changes, caused by vegetation, using the Earth remote sensing data obtained at different points of time. The method includes automatic calculation of brightness groups in segments of changes for each range in the multizonal image. Also, the problem of the spatial multispectral decomposition is resolved with regard to the areas of changes caused by vegetation, with the automatic selection of the object's components homogeneous in terms of their reflection properties.

W pracy podano pewne sugestie zastosowania metod teledetekcyjnych w monitoringu środowiska (przyrodniczego i antropogenicznego). Przedstawiono również krótkie wprowadzenie historyczne do problemu monitoringu. Zestawiono podstawowe metody teledetekcyjne (bierne i czynne). Opisano ponadto zasadnicze różnice między monitoringiem in situ a teledetekcyjnym wspomaganym technikami GPS i GIS. Zwrócono uwagę na konieczność stosowania komplementarnych systemów monitoringu w celu dokładniejszej interpretacji pozyskiwanych wyników obserwacji i pomiarów komponentów środowiska. Określono trzy podstawowe, istotne komponenty środowiska: atmosferę, hydrosferę i litosferę wraz z biosferą. Dla potrzeb monitoringu teledetekcyjnego - zwłaszcza dla zdjęć lotniczych, zobrazowań satelitarnych i obserwacji radiometrycznych - wprowadzono pojęcie morfostruktur antropogenicznych i przyrodniczych ekosystemów. Podkreślono ważność stosowania metod teledetekcyjnych w monitoringu środowiska w związku z przystąpieniem Polski do Wspólnoty Europejskiej.
The paper presents some suggestions of an applictaion of remote sensing methods for the monitoring of envirnonment (natural and antropogenic). It contains also a short historical introduction to the problem of monitoring. As next it have been listed fundamental remote sensing methods (passive and active). Moreover, it is described principial differences between an in situ and remote sensing monitoring supported by the GPS and GIS technics. The neccesity of an application of complementar monitoring systems for more precise interpretation of obtained results of observations and measurements of environmental components is taken into consideration. Three fundamental, substantial components of environment have been defined such as: atmosphere, hydrosphere and litosphere together with biosphere. For the need of the remote sensing monitoring - especially for aerial photographs, satellite images and radiometrie observations - an idea of morfostructures of antropogenic and natural ecosystems have been introduced. The importance of using remote sensing methods in the environmental monitoring according to the accession of Poland to the European Union, at most was emphasized.

Coastal zones are not only the fundaments for local economics based on trade, shipping and transport services, but also a source of food, energy, and resources. Apart from offering diverse opportunities for recreation and tourism, coastal zones provide protection against storms and other meteorological disturbances. Environmental information is also essential because of the direct influence on a country’s maritime zones, which are territorial sea and exclusive economic zones. Keeping local communities and ecosystems healthy requires monitoring and assessing of all the vital changes of territorial sea and its baseline. The paper presents a method and a concept of a system that provides an efficient means of automatic analysis of spatial data provided by satellite observation systems (optical Landsat 8 and SAR Sentinel 1) in order to monitor, and detect, changes in the coastline. The proposed methodology is based on a set of algorithms that enable one to trace and detect changes in coastline shape, and eventual damage to marine infrastructure, such as breakwaters and harbours, relying on high resolution satellite observational products.

Drought is a natural phenomenon as it often occurs in the area of Yasothon province, northeastern of Thailand. It causes effects on vegetation condition in the area. Drought information might be useful for local government to prepare for prevention and mitigation plan in the future. For this reason, the primary objective of the research was to conduct the examination of this province to find severe drought years. Firstly, the researcher needed to find Normalized Differences Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) by analyzing monthly Landsat data acquired at different periods of time from January to December 2014, 2015, and 2016, covering 4,096 km2. Then, the researcher needed to find relationship between VCI and monthly rainfall represented in term of space and time. As results, VCI and its relationship with monthly rainfall were congruent. VCI showed that the drought area was 33.87% or 1,387.32 km2 of studied area in 2014, 16.24% or 665.19 km2 of studied area in 2015 and 27.95% or 1,144.83 km2 of studied area in 2016. Therefore, the most and the least severe drought years were 2014, 2016, and 2015 respectively.

The Remote Sensing Centre has been set up within the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography shortly after launching the first environmental satellite. The main task of the Centre was to use satellite images in research of environment. The Landsat images have been used by the Centre to elaborate the first maps of land use in Poland. Satellite images have also been used to assess the forest damage in Sudety Mountains, elaboration of the satellite maps, assess of the air pollution in the country and elaboration of the soil data bases for Poland. Satellite images acquired in microwaves have been used to map a flood extent in Odra River Valley and to estimate damage caused by the flood. The most diverse application satellite images found in agriculture. They were used for assessment of the stage of crop development, crop yield and production of the cereals in Poland. Several other scientific institutes have also used satellite images in their investigation. One of them was the Institute of Oceanology. It has used satellite images for the Baltic ecosystem monitoring.

The effect of angular structure differences between measured and best-fit analytical phase functions of the equivalent backscattering ratio on calculated reflectance values was studied and shown to be significant. We used a Monte Carlo radiative transfer code to check the effect of choosing different analytical (several Fournier- Forand (1994) and Henyey-Greenstein (1941)) phase functions with backscattering ratios identical to the ‘classical’ average Petzold function. We show that the additional variability of the resulting water leaving radiance is about 7% (4% between the Fournier-Forand functions themselves) for most scenarios. We also show a previously unknown maximum of the discrepancy (up to 10%) for highly scattering waters. We discuss the importance of relative differences in phase function for different angular ranges to this maximum and to the behaviour of the discrepancy as a function of solar zenith angle.

We have utilised techniques of remote sensing in combination with ground observations in order to investigate eskers of the Vormsi and Väinameri region of northwestern Estonia. Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) images were the basis for recognition and regional interpretation of esker systems, and kite aerial photography was employed for detailed, low-height views of selected eskers. A special Landsat TM composite was developed to enhance the display of shallow sea floor features. On this basis, we have extended known, land-based eskers across the sea floor, and we have identified additional probable eskers marked by shallow shoals and tiny islands. The known and suspected eskers of Vormsi and surroundings demonstrate a regular pattern in their distribution, which we suggest represents a subglacial drainage network that was anastomosing in character. The esker network is located along the central pathway of the Väinameri ice lobe, and the overall direction of drainage was toward the Palivere glacial limit. We interpret eskers of the Vormsi-Väinameri vicinity as evidence for substantial meltwater discharge beneath the Väinameri ice lobe, which terminated in a proglacial lake.

Currently, remote sensing sensors are very popular for crop monitoring and yield prediction. This paper describes how satellite images with moderate (Landsat satellite data) and very high (QuickBird and WorldView-2 satellite data) spatial resolution, together with GreenSeeker hand held crop sensor, can be used to estimate yield and crop growth variability. Winter barley (2007 and 2015) and winter wheat (2009 and 2011) were chosen because of cloud-free data availability in the same time period for experimental field from Landsat satellite images and QuickBird or WorldView-2 images. Very high spatial resolution images were resampled to worse spatial resolution. Normalised difference vegetation index was derived from each satellite image data sets and it was also measured with GreenSeeker handheld crop sensor for the year 2015 only. Results showed that each satellite image data set can be used for yield and plant variability estimation. Nevertheless, better results, in comparison with crop yield, were obtained for images acquired in later phenological phases, e.g. in 2007 – BBCH 59 – average correlation coefficient 0.856, and in 2011 – BBCH 59-0.784. GreenSeeker handheld crop sensor was not suitable for yield estimation due to different measuring method.

The paper describes a methodology of determining the toxicity sources, using bioassay based on the wildlife objects that change their colorimetric parameters under the influence of toxic factors. The work explores the dynamism of the colorimetric attributes associated with plant pigments. It can be determined by computer processing of the data obtained from digital remote sensing of the lands affected by toxic pollution by means of such relatively low-cost and straightforward methods as digital photography from an aircraft or a drone. The results obtained do not allow direct measurements but rather serve as a basis for the development and characterization of new biomarkers.

This paper discusses the use of satellite tracking during an environmental disaster at sea, and it assesses the possibility of using remote sensing imagery captured by satellites using multispectral cameras and synthetic-aperture radar (SAR). This study is based on scientific literature and satellite tracking of the X-Press Pearl container ship disaster, which involved the EO-Browser platform. The purpose of this paper is to assess selected remote sensing methods for detecting and tracking marine pollution. The first part of the paper discusses satellite tracking of the X-Press Pearl disaster. The second part focuses on evaluation of the quality of remote sensing imagery from satellites and aircraft, when taking weather conditions into consideration. It should be noted that the research was conducted in real time when the incident occurred. News about the accident was also tracked in real time, allowing for a thorough analysis of the incident and, thus, an assessment of the different sensing systems. Although research on such disasters is crucial for the protection of the marine environment, scientific literature on this topic remains limited. This research area is very important for the protection of the marine environment, in the context of looking for solutions to these issues.

The object of the study is the processing of space images on the territory of the Carpathian territory in the Lviv region, obtained from the Landsat-8 satellite. The work aims to determine the area of deforestation in the Carpathian territory of the Lviv region from different time-space images obtained from the Landsat-8 satellite. Methods of cartography, photogrammetry, aerospace remote sensing of the Earth and GIS technology were used in the experimental research. The work was performed in Erdas Imagine software using the unsupervised image classification module and the DeltaCue difference detection module. The results of the work are classified as three images of Landsat-8 on the territory of the Carpathian territory in the Lviv region. The areas of forest cover for each of them for the period of 2016-2018 have been determined. During the three years, the area of forests has decreased by 14 hectares. Our proposed workflow includes six stages: analysis of input data, band composition of space images on the research territory, implementation of unsupervised classification in Erdas Imagine software and selection of forest class and determination of implementing this workflow, the vector layers of the forest cover of the Carpathians in the Lviv region for 2016, 2017, 2018 were obtained, and on their basis, the corresponding areas were calculated and compared.

Wind has huge influence on take-off, landing and cruising of aircraft. Therefore measuring wind direction and speed as well as evaluating its structure are the most important tasks in meteorological support of flights. Wind shear, which is characterized by rapid changes of speed and/or direction, is one of the most hazardous phenomena for aviation. This phenomenon exists mostly in low tropospheric jet streams, areas of active atmospheric fronts, near convective clouds and strong temperature inversions. The paper proves that wind shear is mainly dependent on non-uniform layout of ascending and descending air currents and shows that this phenomenon can be detected by using ground sensors (ultrasonic anemometers), remote sensing methods (sodars, radars, wind profilers) and data from numerical mesoscale models.

Years go by. Time obliterates the memory of people and events that they initiated or inspired. Events, being fruits of efforts made by individuals, frequently driven by fascination, necessity or even chance, build the history of different spheres of social life, and in the case which is of interest to us – of the discipline which is now known as remote sensing. This sketch aims to outline the origin of remote sensing in Poland and the milestones in its development during the past five decades. It does not intend to offer a detailed substantive analysis of various studies, directions of research or numerous practical applications. In the sketch’s final part, the programme of training specialists in geinformatics and remote sensing offered at the University of Warsaw is shortly discussed. In 2009, 45 years passed since the conference of geographers and specialists in aerial photographs interpretation which was held in Warsaw, at the Institute of Geography, Faculty of Biology and Earth Sciences of the University of Warsaw. The conference was organised by the Laboratory of Aerial Photographs Interpretation at the Chair of Regional Geography of the Institute of Geography. The aim of the meeting – which took place in May 1964 – was to familiarise the participants with the findings of research and didactic work at academic centres abroad and at home, in order to develop a new and uniform curriculum for all geography specialisations in Poland. In addition to that, directions of research work conducted by individual laboratories of aerial photograph interpretation were also discussed. The first classes in remote sensing were conducted at geographical studies at the University of Warsaw, specialisation of regional geography, as early as the academic year 1960/1961. Similar classes were also held at the University of Wrocław, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin. In Poland, aerial photography started to be in use from the very first years of independence. In 1921-1924, photoplans on the scale of 1:10 000 covering an area of 3000 km² were made for the Polish-Soviet border areas. 1930 saw the setting up of a specialised enterprise, FOTOLOT. The establishment of the Polish Photogrammetic Society in 1930 was a momentous event as its activity played an important role in the development of photogrammetric methods based on aerial photographs, catering to different needs of the national economy. The most significant achievements in the years 1920-1939 included: a 1931 study by Roman Gryglaszewski, which described the methodology of taking and interpreting aerial photographs for land improvement works on the rivers of the Polesie region, and a 1935 study by Roman Feliński on the analysis of cities, villages and spas in the settlement organisation of the country, in which he highlighted the role of aerial photographs in studies on the country’s spatial development. In 1937-1939, aerial photographs were used in land classification and forestry. We should also mention the work of the Polish geologist Stanisław Zuber, who conducted geological surveys on the Caspian Sea and was a pioneer of using aerial photographs in geology and geotectonic research. In the inter-war period, the Lvov Polytechnic Professor Kasper Weigl, organiser of aerial photography courses, was the most eminent personality in the teaching of remote sensing. Some aerial photographs taken by the German army survived until today from the times of the Second World War; one of such photographs is an aerial photograph of Warsaw taken on 5 August 1944, at the very beginning of the Warsaw Uprising. In it, one can see areas engulfed by fi res and military operations, and the area of the ghetto, razed to the ground, in the form of a light tone. The first aerial photographs after the Second World War were taken already in 1945. The first years after the War, and later, until the end of the 1950s, were not easy for the development of remote sensing in Polish geography despite the systematic character of aerial photography of Poland at the time. In 1957, Bogodar Winid set a long-term plan for himself to change the neutral to negative approach of the geographers’ community to a new research methodology – interpretation of aerial photographs. The plan included familiarisation with the theoretical foundations of photointerpretation, development of materials for this type of classes, gradual training of specialists, gradual introduction of classes in interpretation of aerial photographs for students specialising in regional geography, and later in other specialisations and disciplines, conducting research in this field, and starting cooperation with state bodies and institutions to familiarise them with the socalled “aeromethods”. Looking at this programme fifty years later, we can say that – probably mostly owing to Bogodar Winid’s outstanding drive and energy – this programme was implemented in full. In 1966, interpretation of aerial photographs was made a compulsory subject in geographical studies. To coordinate the development of photointerpretation, on 23 October 1964 a specialised body, the Photointerpretation Committee, was set up as part of the Polish Geographical Society (PTG). A specialised series entitled Fotointerpretacja w geografii [Photointerpretation in geography] was initiated for scientific exchange purposes; currently, it is known as the Teledetekcja Środowiska [Remote sensing] series. By the end of 2008, a total of 40 volumes with 480 papers was published. The Photointerpretation Committee, later transformed into the Remote Sensing Club of the Polish Geographical Society, in the years 1964-2009 organised 19 nation-wide conferences on issues of photointerpretation and remote sensing. The range of remote sensing applications was expanded to other areas ane institutions owing to cooperation with government institutions, as a result of which OPOLIS, the Centre for Processing Aerial Photographs and Satellite Images, was set up as a part of the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography.

This article concerns the use of remote sensing methods to assess the potential of tourism and recreation of lakes by using unmanned aerial vehicles as a tool that offers new measurement possibilities in such difficult areas to research as river and lake systems. For the purpose of the study, air surveys over three lakes used for tourism and recreation purposes were planned and carried out. These were the following lakes: Swarzędzkie, Wolsztyńskie and Zbąszyńskie located in western Poland. The photos were taken with a RGB and a multispectral cameras. On the basis of calculated orthophotomaps and digital surface models, anthropogenic and natural values were assessed. The examples of the research show the versatile possibilities of using drones dependent on the type sensor used. Remote sensing performed from the deck of an unmanned aircraft is widely used in the study of lakes and is an alternative to existing land and water research methods.

The purpose of this work is to study the development and regularity of morphological structures associated with thermokarst processes. An attempt is made to solve two problems, by analyzing the spatial regularity of morphological structures associated with thermokarst, and that of their dynamics. We use the method of landscape mathematical morphology - a branch of landscape science, investigating quantitative laws of landscape mosaics using methods of mathematical analysis of these mosaics. Investigation was carried out for five parcels in Siberia and Alaska. The analysis shows that a number of deductions from the proposed mathematical model for thermokarst lake plains are generally corroborated by empirical data.

Remote sensing from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) has been gaining popularity in the last few years. In the field of vegetation mapping, digital cameras converted to calculate vegetation index (DCVI) are one of the most popular sensors. This paper presents simulations using a radiative transfer model (libRadtran) of DCVI and NDVI results in an environment of possible UAS flight scenarios. The analysis of the results is focused on the comparison of atmosphere influence on both indices. The results revealed uncertainties in uncorrected DCVI measurements up to 25% at the altitude of 5 km, 5% at 1 km and around 1% at 0.15 km, which suggests that DCVI can be widely used on small UAS operating below 0.2 km.

Our ecosystem, particularly forest lands, contains huge amounts of carbon storage in the world today. This study estimated the above ground biomass and carbon stock in the green space of Bilbao Spain using remote sensing technology. Landsat ETM+ and OLI satellite images for year 1999, 2009 and 2019 were used to assess its land use land cover (LULC), change detection, spectral indices and model biomass based on linear regression. The result of the LULC showed that there was an increase in forest vegetation by 12.5% from 1999 to 2009 and a further increase by 2.3% in 2019. However, plantation cover had decreased by 3.5% from 1999–2009; while wetlands had also decreased by 9% within the same period. There was, however, an increase in plantation cover from 2009 to 2019 by 2.1% but a further decrease in wetlands of 4.3%. Further results revealed a positive correlation across the three decades between the widely used Normalized Differential Vegetation Index (NDVI) with other spectral indices such as Enhance Vegetation Index (EVI) and Normalized Differential Moisture Index (NDMI) for biomass were: for 1999 EVI (R2 = 0.1826), NDMI (R2 = 0.0117), for 2009 EVI (R2 = 0.2192), NDMI (R2 = 0.3322), for 2019 EVI (R2 = 0.1258), NDMI (R2 = 0.8148). A reduction in the total carbon stock from 14,221.94 megatons in 1999 to 10,342.44 megatons 2019 was observed. This study concluded that there has been a reduction in the amount of carbon which the Biscay Forest can sequester.

Sub-basins prioritization is one of the most important resolutions of development sustainability and natural resources comprehended management. In this study, 11 sub-basins of Lohender in east Golstan province about 272/63cm Prioritized using computation and morphometric analysis and using GIS and RS techniques. Erosion mode in each sub-basin specified through Sediment Yield Index approximation. In morphometric analysis, parameters like canal length, bifurcation ratio, discharge density, sub-basins shape coefficient, round coefficient, stretch coefficient and compressive coefficients were computed thus these parameters divided to two classifications: linear coefficients and figurative coefficient. In order to study annual sediment index, from fields applied maps, land coverage, slope, soil type and topographic map scale 1:50000 were used. Finally, each sub-basin Priority determined due to Sediment Yield Index (SYI) and total average of morphometric parameters. According to morphometric parameters, the BS sub-basin and according to SYI parameter, A5 sub-basin showed more critical mode and combination of both showed that B2 sub-basin showed the worst situation.

Land-cover by land-use shows the influence of human on earth surface by different phenomena’s, ecological processes and human activities, its indication is a parameter of measurement how and with which extent the human influenced the natural surface with temporal variations. The change detection technique is used based upon the temporal observations from 2000 to 2015. Study area is one of the most populated city of Pakistan where industrial revolution is at its peak. The whole study area is categorized into four classes (i.e. Agricultural, Barren, Built-up and semi natural surfaces). The observational intervals were divided into three main classes i.e. 2000 to 2005, 2005 to 2010 and 2010 to 2015. Remarkable changes were occurred in built up area from 2000 to 2015 which is 38.6 % of total area, while the total change/decreased in barren land is -332 9(ha), similarly the Parks and grasses are also in decreasing extent and affect the local biodiversity and natural environment. The land cover is directly proportional to population expansion of urban city. For making the prediction of future urban expansion, previously occurred changes were aggregated to come up with a single value and then adding it to the recent land-use values. The mapping and analysis was undertaken through techniques of remote sensing and GIS, which proved to be very effective to measure the changes, and trend of changes with time, this mapping not only tells us the scale of change but, also tells us the patterns and the forces which causes these changes.

Land cover change is the result of complex interactions between social and environmental systems which change over time. While climatic and biophysics phenomena were for a long time the principal factor of land transformations, human activities are today the origin of the major part of land transformation which affects natural ecosystems. Quantification of natural and anthropogenic impacts on vegetation cover is often hampered by logistical issues, including (1) the difficulty of systematically monitoring the effects over large areas and (2) the lack of comparison sites needed to evaluate the effect of the factors. The effective procedure for measuring the degree of environmental change due to natural factors and human activities is the multitemporal study of vegetation cover. For this purpose, the aim of this work is the analysis of the evolution of land cover using remote sensing techniques, in order to better understand the respective role of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling this evolution. A spatio-temporal land cover dynamics study on a regional scale in Oranie, using Landsat data for two periods (1984–2000) and (2000–2011) was conducted. The images of the vegetation index were classified into three classes based on Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values and analysed using image difference approach. The result shows that the vegetation cover was changed. An intensive regression of the woody vegetation and forest land resulted in -22.5% of the area being lost between 1984 and 2000, 1,271 km2 was converted into scrub formations and 306 km2 into bare soil. On the other hand, this class increased by around 45% between 2000 and 2011, these evolutions resulting from the development of scrub groups with an area of 1,875.7 km2.

This research aimed to present the technique for land surface temperature analysis with the data from Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) /Thermal Infrared Sensors (TIR) in Meuang Maha Sarakham District, Maha Sarakham Province, Northeast Thailand. The research was conducted as following three steps: 1) Collecting the satellite data in thermal infrared band from Landsat-8 TIR satellite to adjust the value of Top of Atmosphere (ToA) Reflectance and then analyzing the land Surface temperature 2) Collecting multi-band data from Landsat-8 OLI satellite to adjust the value of Top of Atmosphere (ToA) Reflectance and then analyzing values of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), Fractional Vegetation Cover (FVC) and Land surface Emissivity (LSE) 3) Bringing the results of 1) and 2) to analyze the land surface temperature with split window algorithm. The research results indicated that the analysis of the data from Landsat-8 OLI/TIR satellites in 18 March 2015 indicated a mean temperature of 33.57 °C.

Opis:
Results of research of the identification of flooding as a result of groundwater table fluctuations on the example of the valley of the River Vistula, with the use of multi-spectral Sentinel-2 images from the years 2017-2018 are presented. An analysis of indexes of water use, calculated on the basis of green, red and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands, for extraction of water objects and flooded areas was carried out. Based on the analyses conducted, a mapping method was developed, using three water indexes (MNDWI Modified Normalised Difference Water Index, NDTI Normalised Difference Index and NDPI Normalised Difference Pond Index). Results show that the 10 metre false colour composite RNDTIGNDPIBMNDWI obtained significantly improved submerged extractions more than did individual water indexes. Moreover, the 10-m-images of MNDWI and NDPI, obtained by the sharpening High Pass Filter (HPF), may represent more detailed spatial information on floods than the 20-m-MNDWI and NDPI, obtained from original images.

Results of unique laboratory measurements of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) of several phytoplankton species typically occurring in high abundances in the Baltic Sea waters are presented. Reflectance spectra for diatoms: Cyclotella meneghiniana and Skeletonema marinoi and Dolichospermum sp., Nodularia spumigena and sp. were analysed in terms of assessment of their characteristic features and the differences between them. These species contain similar pigments, which results in general similarities of reflectance spectra, i.e. decrease of reflectance magnitude in the blue and red spectrum regions. However, hyper-spectral resolution of optical measurements let us find differences between optical signatures of diatoms and cyanobacteria groups and between species belonging to one group as well. These differences are reflected in location of local maxima and minima in the reflectance spectrum and changes in relative height of characteristic peaks with changes of phytoplankton concentration. Wide ranges of phytoplankton concentrations were analysed in order to show the persistence of Rrs characteristic features. The picoplankton species, Synechococcus sp. show the most distinct optical signature, which let to distinguish separate cluster in hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA). The results can be used to calibrate input data into radiative transfer model, e.g. phase function or to validate modelled Rrs spectra.

This article is the first of two papers on the remote sensing methods of monitoring the Baltic ecosystem, developed by our team. Earlier, we had produced a series of detailed mathematical models and statistical regularities describing the transport of solar radiation in the atmosphere-sea system, the absorption of this radiation in the water and its utilisation in a variety of processes, most importantly in the photosynthesis occurring in phytoplankton cells, as a source of energy for the functioning of marine ecosystems. The comprehensive DESAMBEM algorithm, presented in this paper, is a synthesis of these models and regularities. This algorithm enables the abiotic properties of the environment as well as the state and the functioning of the Baltic ecosystem to be assessed on the basis of available satellite data. It can be used to determine a good number of these properties: the sea surface temperature, the natural irradiance of the sea surface, the spectral and spatial distributions of solar radiation energy in the water, the surface concentrations and vertical distributions of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in this sea, the radiation energy absorbed by phytoplankton, the quantum efficiency of photosynthesis and the primary production of organic matter. On the basis of these directly determined properties, other characteristics of processes taking place in the Baltic ecosystem can be estimated indirectly. Part 1 of this series of articles deals with the detailed mathematical apparatus of the DESAMBEM algorithm. Part 2 will discuss its practical applicability in the satellite monitoring of the sea and will provide an assessment of the accuracy of such remote sensing methods in the monitoring of the Baltic ecosystem (see Darecki et al. 2008 – this issue).

This paper is the second of two articles on the methodology of the remote sensing of the Baltic ecosystem. In Part 1 the authors presented the set of DESAMBEM algorithms for determining the major parameters of this ecosystem on the basis of satellite data (see Woźniak et al. 2008 – this issue). That article discussed in detail the mathematical apparatus of the algorithms. Part 2 presents the effects of the practical application of the algorithms and their validation, the latter based on satellite maps of selected Baltic ecosystem parameters: the distributions of the sea surface temperature (SST), the Photosynthetically Available Radiation (PAR) at the sea surface, the surface concentrations of chlorophyll a and the total primary production of organic matter. Particular emphasis was laid on analysing the precision of estimates of these and other parameters of the Baltic ecosystem, determined by remote sensing methods. The errors in these estimates turned out to be relatively small; hence, the set of DESAMBEM algorithms should in the future be utilised as the foundation for the effective satellite monitoring of the state and functioning of the Baltic ecosystem.

For this purpose, soil samples were collected from East Azerbaijan Province (Iran) and their color and texture were investigated through Munsell color system and hydrometer method, respectively. Stepwise regression, principle component analysis and sensitivity function methods were employed to find the dominant indices and bands using artificial neural network (ANN) as one of the machine learning techniques. The improved indices as the model input had better performance, for example, the calculation of correlation coefficient between indices and hue showed 51.48% increase of correlation coefficient with comparison of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) to modified soil adjustment vegetation index (MSAVI) and 54.54% correlation enhancement of soil adjustment vegetation index (SAVI) com- pared to MSAVI. Stepwise regression method along with error criteria decline may enhance the performance of soil color model. In comparison with multivariate regression, ANN model exhib- ited better performance (with a 12.61% mean absolute error [MAE] decline). Temporal variation of modified perpendicular drought index (MPDI) as well as band 31 could justify the Munsell soil color components variations specifically chroma and hue. MPDI and thermal bands could be employed as a precise indicator in soil color analysis. Thus, remote sensing data combined with machine learning technique can clarify the procedure potential for soil color determination.

The increase in demand for food and the need to predict the impact of a warming climate on vegetation makes it critical that the best tools for assessing crop production are found. Chlorophyll fluorescence (ChlF) has been proposed as a direct indicator of photosynthesis and plant condition. The aim of this paper is to study the feasibility of estimating ChlF from spectral vegetation indices derived from Sentinel-2, in order to monitor crop stress and investigate ChlF changes in response to surface temperatures and meteorological observations. The regressions between thirty three Sentinel-2-derived VIs, and ChlF measured on the ground were evaluated in order to estimate the best predictors of ChlF. The r-Pearson correlation and polynomial linear regression were used. For maize, the highest correlation between ChlF and VIs were found for NDII (r=0.65) and for SIPI (r=-0.68). The weakest relationship between VIs and ChlF were found for sugar beets. Despite this, it should be noted that the highest correlation for sugar beets appeared for EVI (r=0.45) and S2REP (r=0.43). The results of this study indicate the need for a synergy of low and high resolution satellite data that will enable a more detailed analysis for estimating fluorescence and its relation to climatic conditions, environmental aspects, and VIs derived from satellite images.

The SatBałtyk (Satellite Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Environment) project is being realized in Poland by the SatBałtyk Scientific Consortium, specifically appointed for this purpose, which associates four scientific institutions: the Institute of Oceanology PAN in Sopot – coordinator of the project, the University of Gdańsk (Institute of Oceanography), the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk (Institute of Physics) and the University of Szczecin (Institute of Marine Sciences). The project is aiming to prepare a technical infrastructure and set in motion operational procedures for the satellite monitoring of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. The main sources of input data for this system will be the results of systematic observations by metrological and environmental satellites such as TIROS N/NOAA, MSG (currently Meteosat 10), EOS/AQUA and Sentinel -1, 2, 3 (in the future). The system will deliver on a routine basis the variety of structural and functional properties of this sea, based on data provided by relevant satellites and supported by hydro-biological models. Among them: the solar radiation influx to the sea’s waters in various spectral intervals, energy balances of the short- and long-wave radiation at the Baltic Sea surface and in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the Baltic, sea surface temperature distribution, dynamic states of the water surface, concentrations of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in the Baltic waters, spatial distributions of algal blooms, the occurrence of coastal upwelling events, and the characteristics of primary production of organic matter and photosynthetically released oxygen in the water and many others. The structure of the system and preliminary results will be presented.

Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) method which is commonly used for geodetic applications has a great potential to be successfully harnessed for multiple civil engineering applications. One of the most promising uses of TLS in construction industry is remote sensing of saturation of building materials. A research programme was prepared in order to prove that harnessing TLS for such an application is viable. Results presented in the current paper are a part of a much larger research programme focused on harnessing TLS for remote sensing of saturation of building materials. The paper describes results of the tests conducted with an impulse scanner Leica C-10. Tests took place both indoors (in a stable lab conditions) and outdoors (in a real environment). There were scanned specimens of the most popular building materials in Europe. Tested specimens were dried and saturated (including capillary rising moisture). One of the tests was performed over a period of 95 hours. Basically, a concrete specimen was scanned during its setting and hardening. It was proven that absorption of a laser signal is influenced by setting and hardening of concrete. Outdoor tests were based on scanning real buildings with partially saturated facades. The saturation assessment was based on differences of values of intensity. The concept proved to be feasible and technically realistic.

This work describes original methods of improving the quality of Digital Elevation Models (DEM), obtained by means of satellite altimetry data. Shown are subsequent steps of geometric correction of global raster DEM, such as SRTM, SRTM DLR and ASTER GDEM, which are commonly available. According to the authors of this analysis, methods proposed here can be used in geoinformation projects.

W artykule przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania teledetekcji w celu monitorowania infrastruktury kolejowej. Omówiono aktualnie stosowane metody teledetekcji na różnych poziomach pomiarów: satelitarnym, lotniczym i naziemnym. Przedstawiono przykłady zastosowań teledetekcji do monitorowania infrastruktury kolejowej oraz przeprowadzono analizę zalet i ograniczeń tej metody. W ramach badań naziemnym skanerem laserowym RIEGL-400 stwierdzono przemieszczenia skarpy kolejowej na linii kolejowej nr 8 Warszawa – Kraków. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono przykładowe wyniki z dalszych pomiarów naziemnym skanerem laserowym, którymi objęto strefy przejściowe na wiadukcie celem sprawdzenia wpływu osuwiska na wiadukt. Z przedstawionej w artykule analizy wynika, że teledetekcja naziemna w porównaniu z teledetekcją satelitarną i lotniczą wykazuje wiele pozytywnych aspektów.
The possibilities of remote sensing usage to railway infrastructure monitoring have been presented in the paper. The currently applied methods of remote sensing at various levels of measurements such as: satellite, aerial and ground have been discussed. Some examples of remote sensing application for railway infrastructure monitoring and the analysis of advantages and limitations of this method have been given. During ground measurements with the use of laser scanner RIEGL-400 on the railway line No. 8 Warsaw - Krakow embankment displacement was found. Some findings from the next measurement sessions with implementation of ground laser scanner that were carried out at transition zones on the viaduct in order to check the impact of landslides on the overpass have also been given. The results of carried out analysis show that ground remote scanning in comparison with satellite measurement and aerial measurement points out several positive aspects.

Polityka Unii Europejskiej musi się opierać na spójnych i aktualnych informacjach przestrzennych niezbędnych zarówno do nakreślenia polityki Wspólnoty Europejskiej, jak i realizacji postanowień wynikających z dyrektyw Wspólnoty. Dwa programy Unii Europejskiej wychodzą naprzeciw tym oczekiwaniom, a mianowicie program INSPIRE oraz program GMES. W artykule omówiono te programy ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem roli fotogrametrii i teledetekcji. Prace nad projektem programu INSPIRE dotyczącym Europejskiej Infrastruktury Danych Przestrzennych rozpoczęto pod koniec lat 90. W wyniku działania Grupy Ekspertów programu INSPIRE i prac kilku Grup Roboczych opracowano wstępne założenia programu INSPIRE. Wynikiem tych prac było opracowanie projektu dyrektywy INSPIRE, który 23 lipca 2004 roku został przekazany do Parlamentu i Rady Unii Europejskiej celem przeprowadzenia procesu legislacyjnego. W wyniku prac prowadzonych w obu tych ciałach powstał dokument prezentujący wspólne stanowisko Rady, który miał być poddany głosowaniu w czerwcu 2006 roku na posiedzeniu plenarnym Parlamentu Europejskiego. Zgodnie z tym dokumentem podstawowe źródło informacji o terenie stanowić mają ortofotomapy satelitarne bądź lotnicze. Program GMES (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security) realizowany przez Komisję Europejską i Europejską Agencję Kosmiczną dotyczy permanentnego monitorowania naszego kontynentu, a głównie użytkowania Ziemi i dużych aglomeracji miejskich. Główne źródło informacji w tym programie stanowić będą średnio- i wysokorozdzielcze zdjęcia satelitarne.
The policy of the European Union must be based on condense and up-to date spatial information, necessary both to create the policy of the European Union as well as to implement and monitor the resolutions resulting from the directives of the Union. Two programmes of the European Union meet these expectations. These are INSPIRE and GMES programme. This article presents these programmes, focussing of the role of photogrammetry and remote sensing. The work on the project of the INSPIRE programme, referring to the European Infrastructure of Spatial Data started at the end of 1990s. As the result of the activities of the Group of Experts of programme INSPIRE and several Working Groups, preliminary premises for the INSPIRE programme were made. The result of this work was making the project of the Directive INSPIRE, which, on 23rd July 2004 was submitted to the Parliament and Council of the European Union for the legislation process. As the result of the work done in both these bodies, a document was issued. The title of the document was: Common Statement of the Council. The term of voting is June 2006, at the plenary session of the European Parliament. According to this document, the basic source of terrain information should be satellite or airborne orthophotomaps. Programme GMES (Global Monitoring of Environment and Security) realized by the European Commission and European Space Agency refers to permanent monitoring of our continent and mainly the use of Earth and large city agglomerations. Main source of information in this programme will be medium and high resolution satellite images.

The article presents a method for determining the content and temperature on the basis of spectra from remote measurements. The technique uses measurements of a high resolution radiation spectrum that allows the visibility of the individual rotational lines of gases such as CO₂, used here in the range of 2470-2495 cm¯¹. At the same time a new algorithm is applied of pre-processing the spectrum, involving the use of multiple ratios of intensity at several wavenumbers as input to an inverse model based on neural networks. Due to it, the dimensionality of the input can significantly be reduced. Additionally, the data interpreted do not have to be measured in units of spectral radiance. Thus only the calibration of the sensitivity of the spectrometer at various wavelengths is required. The neural models were constructed on the basis of data from the simulation. The proposed method works with a uniform layer of radiating gas for determining the temperature and CO₂ content. For a non-uniform layer it is possible to determine the line-of-sight temperature profile and average gas content. The method can be extended to different spectral ranges and to other gases present in substantial quantities in the exhaust gases of various processes.

Statistical relationships between the quantum yield of photosynthesis Φ and selected environmental factors in the Baltic have been established on the basis of a large quantity of empirical data. The model formula is the product of the theoretical maximum quantum yield ΦMAX =0.125 atomC quantum−1 and five dimensionless factors fi taking values from 0 do 1: Φ = ΦMAXfa fΔ fc(Ca(0)) fc(PARinh) fE, t. To a sufficiently good approximation, each of these factors fi appears to be dependent on one or at most two environmental factors, such as temperature, underwater irradiance, surface concentration of chlorophyll a, absorption properties of phytoplankton and optical depth. These dependences have been determined for Baltic Case 2 waters. The quantum yield Φ, calculated from known values of these environmental factors, is then applicable in the model algorithm for the remote sensing of Baltic primary production. The statistical error of the approximate quantum yields Φ is 62%.

This article presents a method of determining the spatial orientation of measuring sensors. This method is based on isometric space transformation of a rigid body registered in an oblique coordinate system and is adopted for photogrammetric purposes. The approach is based on incomplete coordinate systems used for determination of transformation parameters. In this publication an incomplete coordinate system is one without one of the axes and in which the matching points connected to primary and secondary coordinate systems are on the two other axes. On the basis of angular momentum, translocation of the beginning of coordinate system is determined first. The next step is to calculate the Euler angles – exterior orientation of sensor. In this method the beginning (the center) of the coordinate system is associated with the sensor itself. This approach, in comparison with the methods known from photogrammetry and remote sensing, allows one to reduce the points needed for transformation. In case of determining the Euler angles two points are indispensable and, in case of moving the beginning of coordinate system, three points are essential. At the end of this paper the analysis of transformation, based on independent control points (ICP), was completed.

The carbon emissions are essential for climate change and 26% of the world's carbon emissions are related to transport. But focusing only on fewer carbon emissions might be biased at times. In order to keep a balance between economic growth and carbon emissions reduction, this paper evaluated the performance of carbon control by considering the input factors and output factors together, which is more comprehensive and reliable. Firstly, this paper has calculated the transport carbon emissions reduction efficiency (TCERE) based on the model of super SBM with undesirable outputs. The input factors include capital stock, labor force and fossil energy consumption. And the output factors include gross domestic product and carbon dioxide emissions. Then the influencing factors of TCERE were analyzed using econometric models. The economic growth, transport structure, technology level and population density were posited as influencing factors. This paper creatively proposed the per capita nighttime lights brightness as a new indicator for economic growth. An empirical study was conducted in East China from 2013 to 2017, and this study has found that the relationship between TCERE and economic growth shows an U-shape. Besides, transport structure and technology level both show a positive impact on TCERE. The implications of our findings are that: (a) The TCERE declines slower in East China, giving us reason to believe that the improvement of TCERE is predictable; (b) When economic growth exceeds the turning point, economic growth is conducive to the improvement of TCERE. We could develop the economy boldly and confidently; (c) Increased investment in railway and waterway transportation infrastructure projects is needed to strengthen the structure of the railway and waterway transportation systems. Furthermore, the general public and businesses should be encouraged to prefer rail or river transportation; (d) Investment in scientific and technological innovation should be enhanced in order to produce more efficient energy-use methods.

W artykule omówione zostały możliwości zastosowania teledetekcji do badania ruchów masowych. Przeprowadzono analizę wykorzystania teledetekcji satelitarnej, lotniczej i naziemnego skanera laserowego do skanowania terenów osuwiskowych. Omówiono zagrożenie ruchami osuwiskowymi na terenie Polski. Przedstawiono przykłady zniszczeń spowodowanych osuwiskami w budynkach i infrastrukturze komunikacyjnej. Szkody takie powstają szczególnie po obfitych opadach deszczu, bowiem woda jest jednym z głównych czynników aktywujących ruch osuwiskowy. W artykule przedstawiono schemat tworzenia się osuwiska i czynniki wpływające na jego uaktywnienie. Porównano zalety i ograniczenia każdego z poziomów teledetekcji: satelitarnej, lotniczej i naziemnej. Do monitorowania powierzchniowego osuwisk wybrano metodę naziemnego skanowania jako najbardziej odpowiednią w zakresie rozdzielczości przestrzennej i czasowej. Obraz otrzymany tą metodą to trójwymiarowy model składający się z milionów pojedynczych punktów. Chmura punktów stanowi pewnego rodzaju dokumentację przestrzenną, do której możemy w każdej chwili wrócić, aby wykonać dodatkowe pomiary, analizy lub odtworzyć stan z dnia wykonania skanu. Ruchy masowe można śledzić na podstawie modelu różnicowego konstruowanego na podstawie dwóch lub więcej przestrzennych modeli.
The paper describes the applicability of remote sensing to the study of mass movements. An analysis of the use of satellite remote sensing, aerospace and terrestrial laser scanner to scan the landslide areas was carried out: Risk of landslide movements on the area of Poland was characterized. The examples of the devastation in buildings and transport infrastructure caused by landslides were presented. Such damage would occur especially after heavy rains, as water is one of the main factors activating mass movements. This paper presents the scheme to create a landslide movement and factors affecting its activation The advantages and limitations of each level remote sensing: satellite, aerospace and terrestrial laser scanner were presented. For monitoring of the landslide surface scanning method was selected as the terrestrial laser scanner for the most appropriate spatial and time resolution. Image by this method was a three-dimensional model consisting of millions of individual points. Cloud of points is a kind of spatial documentation to which we can return at any time to perform additional measurements, analysis, or restore the status of the implementation of the scan. Mass movements can be tracked on the basis of the constructed differential model based on two or more spatial models.

The objective of this study was to estimate the height of roughness element (ZH) and zero-displacement length (Zd) for Baghdad city using remote sensing and GIS techniques and resources such as DEM, DSM, and shapefile. The difference between DEM and DSM produced digital height model which represents the height of the roughness element for the region, which was used to determine the zero-displacement height. The results showed that the variations in Zd values depend strongly on ZH. Rusafa had the highest Zd (15.8 m) while Dora had the lowest values (4.7 m). Thus, Baghdad city has medium density classification according to the results of Zd and ZH values.

Illegal extraction of gold has grown to be a problem in many countries, causing the degradation of the environment. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate changes in tree cover and surface pollution. The development of a mine site has been observed and analysed with images acquired from Landsat and the Sentinel missions. The results of the study showed changes in the state of the environment, strongly suggesting the possibility of ongoing pyrite weathering processes and the transportation of clay materials down watercourses, which can cause not only the further deterioration of the environment but also slow down the natural regeneration of the forest. In addition, research has found disturbing changes in vegetation, showing a loss of tree cover in the Amazon Rainforest as high as 17%. The validity of using remote sensing methods to observe the development of individual mining sites and their characteristics was confirmed.

The water requirements of the wheat crop are represented by the actual evapotranspiration, which depends on the meteorological data of the study area and the amount of water consumed during the season. Estimation of crop coefficients (Kc) and evapotranspiration (ETc) using remote sensing data is essential for decision-making regarding water management in irrigated areas in arid and semi-arid large-scale areas. This research aims to estimate the crop coefficient calculated from remote sensing data and the actual evapotranspiration values for the crop. The FAO Penman-Monteith equation has been used to estimate the reference evapotranspiration from meteorological data. Linear regression analysis was applied by developing prediction equations for the crop coefficient for different growth stages of comparing with the vegetation cover index (NDVI). The results showed that (R2 = 0.98) between field crop coefficient and crop coefficient predicted from (Kc = 2.0114 NDVI-0.147) in addition to (RMSE = 0.92 and (d = 0.97).

Assessing the tendency of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the river watersheds enables a better understanding of the hydromorphological properties of its basins and the associated processes. In addition, analyzing this trend is essential to address several important issues such as erosion, water pollution, human health risks, etc. Therefore, it is critical to determine a proper method to quantify spatio-temporal variability in SSC. In recent years, remote sensing and GIS technologies are being widely applied to support scientists, researchers, and environmental resource investigators to quickly and synchronously capture information on a large scale. The combination of remote sensing and GIS data will become the reliable and timely updated data source for the managers, researchers on many fields. There are several tools, software, algorithms being used in extracting information from satellites and support for the analysis, image interpretation, data collection. The information from satellite images related to water resources includes vegetational cover, flooding events on a large scale, rain forecast, population distribution, forest fire, landslide movements, sedimentation, etc., and especially information on water quality, sediment concentration. This paper presents the initial result from LANDSAT satellite image interpretation to investigate the amount of sediment carried downstream of the Ba river basin.

Wobec wzrastającego zagrożenia naturalnego środowiska ekosystemu Bagien Biebrzańskich oraz konieczności jego ochrony dużego znaczenia nabiera monitoring przyrodniczy aktualnego stanu pokrycia roślinnego oraz uwilgotnienia terenu. Metody teledetekcji są w takim przypadku bardziej dokładne i szybsze od metod polowych, pozwalają rozpoznać oraz określić aktualną strukturę przestrzenną roślinności i wyznaczyć granice jej poszczególnych elementów, jak również oszacować uwilgotnienie danego siedliska. Współczesna technika satelitarna umożliwia prowadzenie kompleksowych badań jednocześnie na dużych obszarach, często trudno dostępnych. Wykorzystuje się informacje pozyskiwane w różnych zakresach widma elektromagnetycznego i w różnym czasie. Autorzy proponują wykorzystanie zdjęć pozyskiwanych przez satelity środowiskowe, pracujące w widmie optycznym i mikrofalowym. Zdjęcia zarejestrowane w widmie optycznym wykorzystano do klasyfikacji zbiorowisk roślinnych, obliczenia wskaźników roślinnych oraz gęstości strumieni ciepła. Zdjęcianzarejestrowane w zakresie mikrofalowym wykorzystano do obliczenia wskaźnika LAI (ang. "Leaf Area Index") i wilgotności gleby. Algorytmy szacowania różnych parametrów biofizycznych opracowane na podstawie danych naziemnych i satelitarnych dla poszczególnych zbiorowisk roślinnych, występujących na obszarze Bagien Biebrzańskich, pozwalają na wykonywanie map tematycznych tych siedlisk z dużą rozdzielczością czasową i przestrzenną. Porównywanie kolejnych sekwencji czasowych takich map umożliwia monitoring przyrodniczy ekosystemu bagiennego, wychwycenie zmian ilościowych i jakościowych oraz ich kierunku. Z uwagi na dynamizm siedlisk bagiennych i ich różnorodności biologicznej informacje te mogą być wykorzystane w planowaniu działań, zmierzających do ochrony tego ekosystemu przed degradacją.
This study was carried out in the Biebrza Valley, a NATURA 2000 and Ramsar Convention site situated in Northeast Poland. This paper presents monitoring and mapping of various soil-vegetation variables using optical and microwave satellite data. Satellite data used in the study included: ENVISAT ASAR and MERIS; ALOS PALSAR, AVNIR-2, and PRISM; NOAA.AVHRR; Terra ASTER and MODIS; Landsat ETM+. Optical images were used for classification of wetland communities and calculation of vegetation indices. Latent Heat Flux (LE) was estimated from NOAA. AVHRR and meteorological data and soil moisture index was calculated as the ratio of Sensible Heat Flux (H) to LE. Parallel to satellite observations the soil-vegetation variables were measured at the test site. Data from optical and microwave satellite images and soil-vegetation field measurements were analysed to develop methods for the Leaf Area Index (LAI), biomass, and soil moisture assessment over wetlands. Monitoring and mapping of various soil-vegetation variables is very important part of better management and protection of wetland areas. Presented results allow for monitoring and mapping soilvegetation parameters of wetlands and their changes over time. The methodology developed is suitable for applications in the system of wetland monitoring in Europe. The studied areas can be perceived as a reference for other wetlands.

Results of the computation model of the sound propagation in Fram Strait environment condition is discussed. 3D environment has been simulated with respect to statistical properties of the real cross-section of the strait. The model demonstrates the presents of the stable rays which structure is not changed under the varying environment condition. Travel time variations are presented for the signal propagated along the stable rays through the 200 km path in transverse direction refer to water flow. Obtained data are useful for the estimation of the potential accuracy of the remote sound sensing application for the measurement of the inhomogeneous flow movement. The method developed relies on the advections of small-scale inhomogeneities across the acoustic path and travel-time variations in process of signal crossing the Strait on a number of paths to infer the intervening of fme-scale variability and transverse current. These inhomogeneities produce perturbations in the travel time of the sound and the current can be sensed by generating a timelagged cross-correlation of the full acoustic field. The linear four element transmission array and the four element receiving array with equally spaced elements were used for calculations. By combining the signals from each transmitter-receiver pair in different ways, a number of different paths position were probed and profile of transverse current along the propagation path was retrieved. Calculations done in frame of ray model of the signal propagation.

The aim of the study was to diagnose the main trends of changes in land cover in selected communes of Polish metropolitan areas. Detailed studies were conducted in deliberately selected housing estates located in the core of metropolitan area (at least one housing estate) and communes located directly at the border of cities and located on the outskirts of metropolitan areas. The examined communes also differed in the quality of natural conditions of agricultural production. The study used LANDSAT 5 TM and RapidEye satellite images from three limited-time registrations (1996/1999, 2011, 2016/2017). On the basis of remote sensing data, changes in land use were specified by presenting them in a graphic form as compilation of numerical maps. The analyses were performed on processed images (colour compositions), which were subjected to supervised classification using the maximum-likelihood technique. The quality control of supervised classification showed accuracy of 89.3% for LANDSAT 5 TM scene analyses and 91.8% for RapidEye images. Kappa coefficient for the discussed classification was: 0.84 (LANDSAT TM) and 0.89 (Rapid Eye). The results obtained for individual metropolitan areas allow to identify the directions of changes (Land Use Change Cover) taking place in them, with consideration to specificity of each of them.

Badania nad możliwościami wykorzystania technik teledetekcyjnych do operacyjnego monitorowania stanu jakości wód Zalewu Wiślanego są prowadzone od roku 2006. Prace badawcze wykonywano w ramach trzech projektów międzynarodowych: SWANLAKE (projekt ESA Category-1 LBR), MONTRANSAT (projektu typu INTERREG dofinansowany ze środków Europejskiego Funduszu Rozwoju Regionalnego w ramach Programu Sąsiedztwa Litwa, Polska, Obwód Kaliningradzki Federacji Rosyjskiej) i VISLA (projekt dofinansowany ze środków Norweskiego Mechanizmu Finansowego). W prezentowanej pracy wykorzystano dane satelitarne rejestrowane przez skaner CHRIS/PROBA w trybie „Water”, pozyskującym dane w 18 kanałach spektralnych. Opracowaniu podlegało sześć bezchmurnych scen satelitarnych zarejestrowanych w latach 2007–2009. Obrazy satelitarne CHRIS/PROBA zostały poddane procesowi korekcji radiometrycznej, atmosferycznej i geometrycznej, a następnie dla tak przygotowanych danych przeprowadzono analizy statystyczne mające na celu otrzymanie formuł obliczeniowych umożliwiających uzyskanie rozkładów przestrzennych wybranych wskaźników jakości wody. Korekcję atmosferyczną wykonano przy zastosowaniu modelu ATCOR 2/3 w wersji 6.4.2. Dokonując analizy zależności między odbiciem spektralnym w punktach poboru wody a wartościami wskaźników jakości wody, określonymi metodami analitycznymi, otrzymano formuły empiryczne dla widzialności krążka Secchiego (R2=0.75), zawartości zawiesiny ogółem (R2=0.88) oraz zawartości chlorofilu-a (R2=0.73). Wyniki jakie uzyskano dla obszaru badawczego „Zalew Wiślany” wskazują na możliwość zastosowania danych CHRIS do operacyjnego określenia m.in. przezroczystości wód, zawartości zawiesiny ogółem oraz zawartości chlorofilu-a.
The investigation possibilities of usage remote sensing techniques for water quality monitoring of Vistula Lagoon have been made since 2006. All research studies, presented in the article, have been done under three international projects: SWANLAKE (ESA Project Category-1 LBR), MONTRANSAT (INTERREG project co-financed from European Regional Development Fund within the framework Neighbourhood Programme Lithuania, Poland and Kaliningrad Region of Russian Federation) and VISLA (project co-financed within the frame Norway Grants). All presented in article analysis based on the six cloudless superspectral satellite images of CHRIS/PROBA (in “Water” mode, 18 spectral bands) acquired in 2007–2009. CHRIS/ PROBA images were processed according to successive steps: radiometric correction, atmospheric correction, geometric registration, water quality parameters extraction. CHRIS/PROBA satellite data was made using ATCOR 2/3 model – version 6.4.2. Water quality parameters were extracted using empirical and statistical relationships between CHRIS measured spectral reflectance and in situ measurements (regression based): Secchi disc depth (R2=0.75), suspended solids (R2=0.88), chlorophyll-a (R2=0.73). Results presented in article for Vistula Lagoon test site, shows the real possibilities of CHRIS satellite data usage for near real time determination of various water quality parameters like water transparency, total suspended solids, chlorophyll-a concentration.

Two methods of determining changes of objects (structures) using remote sensing data obtained in different times are considered in this article. The comparison of the percentage of destroyed buildings as a consequence of the earthquake in L'Aquila city (Italy) was implemented. For comparison two ways of data collection were used: obtaining data by the digitalization of objects before and after the disaster (using MapInfo software) and by automatic image classification using a special module Delta Cue (Erdas software).

Due to growing demand for ground-truth in deep learning-based remote sensing satellite image fusion, numerous approaches have been presented. Of these approaches, Wald’s protocol is the most commonly used. In this paper, a new workflow is proposed consisting of two main parts. The first part targets obtaining the ground-truth images using the results of a pre-designed and well-tested hybrid traditional fusion method. This method combines the Gram–Schmidt and curvelet transform techniques to generate accurate and reliable fusion results. The second part focuses on the training of a proposed deep learning model using rich and informative data provided by the first stage to improve the fusion performance. The demonstrated deep learning model relies on a series of residual dense blocks to enhance network depth and facilitate the effective feature learning process. These blocks are designed to capture both low-level and high-level information, enabling the model to extract intricate details and meaningful features from the input data. The performance evaluation of the proposed model is carried out using seven metrics such as peak-signal-to-noise-ratio and quality without reference. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods in terms of image quality. It also exhibits the robustness and powerful nature of the proposed approach which has the potential to be applied to many remote sensing applications in agriculture, environmental monitoring, and change detection.

In this study, changes in Land Use Land Cover (LULC) have been investigated over the Udhaim River Basin in Iraq by using spectral indices. NDVI, NDBI, NDWI, NDBaI, and CI represent respectively the vegetation, built-up, water bodies, bare-land, and soil crust of LULC. Two different images were acquired for the analysis, namely a Landsat 5 TM image from 1 July 2007 and a Landsat 8 OLI from 5 June 2015, both representing summer conditions. Results show that the percentages of vegetated land and water body areas have decreased. On the contrary, the percentages of built-up, bare land and soil crust areas have increased. The loss of vegetated areas and water body areas is a signal of land degradation leading to desertification, due to the combined effects of climate conditions, water deficit and human activities. Field observation shows that human activities have a significant impact on land degradation.

This article presents the problem of climate warming and the effect of melting ice caps. The problem of climate warming is discussed in two stages. In the first stage, the factors affecting global warming are discussed in detail and the effects and risks of ablation extensively described. Analyses were conducted on data available online from NASA and Carbon Dioxide Information Analysis Center. The Greenland area (Jakobshavn Glacier) was selected to visualize glacier calving front changes. The analysis of changes was performed on the selected satellite images covering the summer period (June to September) provided by the Landsat program. Then, the changes in the position of the calving front of the Jakobshavn Glacier were visualized for the period 1985–2020, with a repeatability of every 5 years. Thus, our results addressed the challenges of environmental changes to remote sensing data processing. In addition to the visualization, a surface summary of these changes was presented in the study. The results were discussed in the context of climate change data processed by means of the GIS method. Furthermore, an analysis of the effects of greenhouse gases on glacier surface changes was performed. In summary, the results reveal that satellite imagery is an excellent source of data on which to visualize glacier calving rates, comparing individual layers showing the position of the glacier calving front and calculating the area of calved ice.

Estimation of surface temperature using multispectral imagery retrieved from satellite sensors constitutes several problems in terms of accuracy, accessibility, quality and evaluation. In order to obtain accurate results, currently utilized methods rely on removing atmospheric fluctuations in separate spectral windows, applying atmospheric corrections or utilizing additional information related to atmosphere or surface characteristics like atmospheric water vapour content, surface effective emissivity correction or transmittance correction. Obtaining accurate results of estimation is particularly critical for regions with fairly non-uniform distribution of surface effective emissivity and surface characteristics such as coastal zone areas. The paper presents the relationship between retrieved land surface temperature, air temperature, sea surface temperature and vegetation indices (VI) calculated based on remote observations in the coastal zone area. An indirect comparison method between remotely estimated surface temperature and air temperature using LST/VI feature space characteristics in an operational Geographic Information System is also presented.

Drought, water scarcity and climate changes are very important threats for agriculture on a global basis. Remote Sensing (RS) is accepted as a technique to collect data and determine water stress indices. Water Stress Indices (WSI) are useful tools to prevent drought and determine irrigation scheduling. The water stress indices are primarily identified as the Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) and the Water Deficit Index (WDI). The effect of soil background is major problem to establish CWSI especially during early growth stage measurements of canopy temperature (Ts). Hence, WDI is a better index when it comprised with CWSI because of Ts. CWSI and WDI can be determined by two different techniques. These are determined by using measured by using traditional components to collect data and estimated methods by applying RS components to collect necessary data. Estimated method has many advantages when this method compared with measured method. However, estimated method needs some RS components which are infrared gun (IR), sling psychrometer, Spectro radiometer. With the help of these tools, the necessary data are obtained and WDI is determined. By using Spectro radiometer vegetation indices are defined. Among the many vegetation indices, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is mostly used one. By using NDVI determination of vegetation cover is easy and accurate technique to establish WDI. Establishing these both stress indices with less fieldwork and by saving money, time and labor conveys the necessary information for agriculturists using remotely sensed data especially for large agricultural fields.

Tidal flat plays a crucial role in socio-economic development and ecological environment. Tidal flats in Ha Long-Cam Pha in Vietnam are impacted by human activities, especially coal mining activities. Using remote sensing data is able to detect, extract, and monitor the changes of tidal flats and exploited coal mine area with multi-temporal, in various scales, and for a large coverage. This study aims to investigate the impact of coal mining activities on the changes of tidal flats using remote sensing in Cam Pha, Ha Long, one of the biggest coal basins in Vietnam. Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) of tidal flats constructed by Landsat satellite images acquired in years 1989, 2001, and 2014 are compared to determine the volume changes. Besides, coal mining activities including coal production, waste rock dump area, and the expansion of open coal mine during the period 1989-2014 are investigated using correspondent Landsat images and the reports from the coal mine companies in the study area. Sediment samples in tidal flats are analyzed to determine the origin of the sediments. As the results, organic matter in the tidal flats is dominant with the concentration of 459 g/kg to 607 g/kg, which is evidence for the impact of coal exploitation on the coastal environment. In addition, the relationship between coal mine activities and tidal flat variation is well observed in this study.

The absorption properties of phytoplankton in surface waters of the Baltic Sea and coastal lakes are examined in the context of their relationships with the concentration of the main photosynthetic pigment, chlorophyll a. The analysis covers 425 sets of spectra of light absorption coefficients aph(l) and chlorophyll a concentrations Chla measured in 2006—2009 in various waters of the Baltic Sea (open and coastal waters, the Gulf of Gdańsk and the Pomeranian Bay, river mouths and the Szczecin Lagoon), as well as in three lakes in Pomerania, Poland (Obłęskie, Łebsko and Chotkowskie). In these waters the specific (i.e. normalized with respect to Chla) light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton aph *(l) varies over wide ranges, which differ according to wavelength. For example, aph *(440) takes values from 0.014 to 0.124 mg1 m2, but aph *(675) from 0.008 to 0.067 mg1 m2, whereby Chla ranges from 0.8 to 120 mg m3. From this analysis a mathematical description has been produced of the specific light absorption coefficient of phytoplankton aph *(l), based on which the dynamics of its variability in these waters and the absorption spectra in the 400—700 nm interval can be reconstructed with a low level of uncertainty (arithmetic statistical error: 4.09—10.21%, systematic error: 29.63—51.37%). The relationships derived here are applicable in local remote sensing algorithms used for monitoring the Baltic Sea and coastal lakes and can substantially improve the accuracy of the remotely determined optical and biogeochemical characteristics of these waters.

The study looked at the application of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems in the landuse pattern in Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo state; this is with the aim of classifying the area into the four basic classes observed in the study area. Landsat8 imagery with 30m by 30m resolution within path 191 and row 55 was downloaded, administrative boundary of the local government was used to clip the image using ArcGIS software and bands’ combination was done. Bands 7, 5 and 4 were combined to produce the composite image that gives natural colours for easy identification of features using supervised classification method. The study area was categorized into built up, vegetation, bare ground and water body. During the course of the study, it was gathered that the area has 56.84% vegetation, 39.61% built up, 3.32% bare ground and 0.23% water body. Confusion matrix was adopted for accuracy assessment. At the end, it was shown that the study had an overall classification accuracy of 83.67% and the Kappa Index is substantial at 0.77. Therefore, it was concluded that supervised image classification method is suitable for landuse classification and the results obtained are reliable.

The cartography and quantification of irrigated fields in the context of decreasing rainfall constitute a key element for water resources management. Therefore, in this context, the use of remote sensing methods applied to Landsat-type images with a high spatial resolution for monitoring the changes in land use in general and irrigated crops, in particular, is highly relevant. This paper aims to present a method for mapping spatial and temporal changes in irrigated parcels in the Guigou Plain, located in the central Middle Atlas, based on Landsat images and fieldwork. For the years 1985, 1998, 2010 and 2018, the use of a supervised classification method based on the principle of machine learning, fed by precise field surveys, has made it possible to highlight a significant extension of irrigated areas to the expense of pastureland and rainfed crops. Over the entire period under consideration, the results obtained with good precision (98.5% overall accuracy) showed that the area under irrigated crops has increased from approximately 699 ha to 3988 ha, i.e. an increase of 570%. The corollary of this increase is strong pressure on the water resource, especially groundwater. This information on the total extension of irrigated plots can be taken as a reference in the perspective of reasoned management of water resources in the sector.

In this study we present calibration/validation activities associated with satellite MERIS image processing and aimed at estimating chl a and CDOM in the Curonian Lagoon. Field data were used to validate the performances of two atmospheric correction algorithms, to build a band-ratio algorithm for chl a and to validate MERIS-derived maps. The neural network-based Case 2 Regional processor was found suitable for mapping CDOM; for chl a the band-ratio algorithm applied to image data corrected with the 6S code was found more appropriate. Maps were in agreement with in situ measurements. This study confirmed the importance of atmospheric correction to estimate water quality and demonstrated the usefulness of MERIS in investigating eutrophic aquatic ecosystems.

W dniach 24-25 września 2018 roku na Wydziale Nauk Geograficznych Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego odbyła się XXIII Ogólnopolska Konferencja Fotointerpretacji i Teledetekcji. Jest to cykliczne spotkanie specjalistów z tej dziedziny nauki organizowane od 1964 roku. Organizatorami konferencji były: Oddział Teledetekcji i Geoinformatyki Polskiego Towarzystwa Geograficznego, Sekcja Teledetekcji Komitetu Badań Kosmicznych i Satelitarnych PAN oraz Zakład Geoinformacji Wydziału Nauk Geograficznych Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego. Ośrodek Łódzki nie pierwszy raz był gospodarzem tego wydarzenia - wcześniej organizował VIII Konferencję w roku 1977. Także w Łodzi, dzięki osobie Henryka Gawlika, tematyka fotointerpretacyjna i teledetekcyjna była stosowana w uniwersyteckiej dydaktyce geografii.
On September 24-25, 2018, the 23rd Conference on Photointerpretation and Remote Sensing took place at the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of the University of Lodz. The organizers of the conference were: the Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics Division of the Polish Geographical Society, the Remote Sensing Section of the Space and Satellite Research Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Department of Geoinformation of the Faculty of Geographical Sciences of the University of Lodz. 23rd conference, organized under the slogan „Contemporary remote sensing in geographical environment research”, was one of the events related to the 100th anniversary of the Polish Geographic Society.

This study aims to investigate crop selection and spatial patterns of agricultural fields in a drought-affected region in Isfahan Province, central Iran. Based on field surveys portraying growth stages of the main crops including wheat, alfalfa, vegetables and fruit trees, three Landsat 8 operational land imager (OLI) images were acquired on March 15 (L1), June 27 (L2) and October 1 (L3), 2015. After performing radiometric and atmospheric corrections, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) maps of the images were produced and introduced to the Multi-Resolution Segmentation algorithm to delineate agricultural fields. An NDVI-based decision algorithm was then developed to identify crops devoted to each field. Finally, a set of landscape metrics including Number of Patches (NP), mean patch size (MPS), mean shape index (MSI), perimeter-to-area ratio (PARA) and Euclidian Nearest Neighborhood Distance (ENN) was utilized to evaluate their respective spatial formation. The results showed that nearly 46% of fields are devoted to wheat indicating that the landscape has been dramatically shifted towards wheat monoculture farming. Moreover, the farmers’ inclination to grow crops in large fields (approximate area of 1 ha) with more regular geometric shapes are considered as an effective way of optimising water use efficiency in areas experiencing significant water shortage.

This paper is aimed at analyzing the phenomenon of shoreline retreat in the locality of Rufisque from 1978 to 2018 mainly using geospatial data and field visits. A set of Landsat images from different dates at 10 year intervals was then acquired through the United States Geological Survey platform and shoreline change analysis was run using the Digital Shoreline Analysis System. In addition to that desktop work, interactions with local residents allowed the determination of ongoing adaptation strategies actually in place to cope with coastal erosion. The study showed that Rufisque is subject to serious rates of erosion reaching −19.48 m/year from 1978–1988, close to −8 m/year from 1988–1998, −5.88 m/year from 1998–2008 and −6.67 m/year from 2008–2018. Beside that coastal erosion, it has been noticed that the coastline also experienced in some of its parts cases of accretion reaching 4.94 m/year for 1988–1998, 7.29 m/year from 1998–2008 and 7.68 m/year during the period 2008–2018. In terms of surfaces, Rufisque’ shoreline respectively lost 156.81 ha (1978–1988), 80.55 ha (1988–1998), 6.94 ha (1998–2008), 12.93 ha (2008–2018) and in the same note gained 2.86 ha (1988–1998), 32.51 ha (1998–2008) and 19.16 ha (2008–2018) attesting to the fact that the coastline is subject to both spatiotemporal changes. Finally, this study also reveals that while authorities’ reaction is taking place at much lower pace, local communities are actually using their ingenuity to put in place strategies to tackle coastal erosion.

Methods of micrometeorological measurements in different scale are presented in this paper. The remote sensing method basing on a system of automatic measurements is the best for carrying continuous measurement in field scale. The mathematical model constructed on the basis of field measurement results is recommended as the very useful for investigation of heat and water balance structure. This model needs only standard meteorological data and information of plant development stage as input data. The model, when satellite infonnation is used, can be applied for practical purposes in agriculture.
W pracy są stosowane metody używane do mikro-meteorologicznych pomiarów w różnej skali. Metoda teledetekcyjna oparta na systemie automatycznych pomiarów jest najlepsza do przeprowadzania pomiarów w skali pola. Matematyczny model skonstruowany na bazie wyników badań pomiarów polowych jest polecany jako bardzo użyteczna metoda do badania struktury bilansu cieplnego i wodnego. Użycie tego modelu jest związane tylko ze znajomością standardowych danych meteorologicznych i informacją dotyczącą fazy rozwoju roślin, które służą jako dane wejściowe. Przy wykorzystaniu informacji satelitarnej model ten może mieć praktyczne zastosowanie w rolnictwie.

Groundwater is one of the most valuable natural resources which is essential for the environmental, biological and socio-economic activities. The present paper aims to delineate groundwater potential of Ulhas basin in India through remote sensing and geographical information system. Several groundwater influencing factors such as geology, geomorphology, slope, landuse, rainfall, lineaments are mapped in GIS environment. Later, these factors were ranked on the basis of their influence on the groundwater potential of a region. After that all these factors were integrated together in GIS environment to prepare the groundwater potential map of Ulhas basin. By implementing influencing factor, it is observed that about 21%, 50% and 29% areas are falling under high, moderate, and low groundwater potential zones, correspondingly. The present study is highly valuable to the policymakers, administrative bodies, engineers for management of groundwater and preparing sustainable water resource plans in Ulhas basin. Additionally, the present paper will help to construct artificial groundwater recharge plan in the study area.

The structure of geoinformatics can be understood in many ways, what can be seen from the more or the less complex schemas published in various articles. Geoinformatics creates new possibilities for the precise analysis of spatial phenomena, such as for following their dynamics or defining the associations existing between their components. The use of remote sensing data in such research, takes to another level those areas of knowledge, in which there nevertheless still is a scarcity of reliable materials. It also enables the current monitoring of those phenomena which can't be investigated and estimated in any other way, as well as the modeling of spatial (geographical) phenomena. Since 1996, many studies have been performed at the Laboratory of Remote Sensing of the Environment at the University of Warsaw, in which remote sensing data were integrated with data obtained by other means.

Remote Sensing is a method of examination used in the study of resources on earth without any physical contact. It is a method by which the characteristics of the land below are recorded from space and sky. Determining the characteristics of natural and cultural resources of earth, sustainable exploitation of these resources in the most effective ways and continuous monitoring of the changes in these resources are fundamental to being a developed country. For a sustainable land use and urbanization, data about the unstable natural environment must be collected and monitored at regular intervals, and in order to do these, Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are employed. Images obtained through RS method can be analyzed for the accurate use of the data available. This study seeks to determine the spatial development in and around the city of Isparta through digital imaging processing techniques on different satellite images which belong to different years. Images from satellites ASTER and LANDSAT; information on the quarters in Isparta and the city plan and ERDAS IMAGINE 9.1 program were used in the study. The spatial development of the city of Isparta was studied on the basis of the satellite images obtained in the years 1987, 2000 and 2010 and this study was integrated into GIS. Having analyzed how much change occurred and which way it trended, important information was collected which will be used as source for future studies to be carried out on Isparta. It was observed that while residential areas increased, amount of forested land, and agricultural areas decreased during the periods studied.

Opis:
Obserwowane w ostatnich latach na świecie sukcesywne nasilanie się procesów erozji brzegu (Zawadzka 1999, Pruszak 2003, Living with erosion... 2004) powoduje coraz szersze zainteresowanie naukowców, reprezentujących różne dziedziny nauki, problemami strefy brzegowej. Jednakże złożoność zachodzących na brzegu morskim procesów, ich przyczyn i uwarunkowań, stwarza poważne problemy w ich opisie. Wielokrotnie podejmowane próby wyjaśnienia mechanizmów reakcji zachodzących w strefie brzegowej, jak do tej pory, nie dały zadowalających wyników. Poznanie prawidłowości rozwoju linii brzegowej ma kluczowe znaczenie dla rozwoju regionalnego i zagospodarowania przestrzennego, szczególnie w aspekcie bezpieczeństwa brzegu i jego infrastruktury, a także planowania rozwiązań prawnych i finansowych w odniesieniu do obszarów zagrożonych zniszczeniem. Wykorzystanie w badaniach metod teledetekcyjnych może przyczynić się do wyznaczenia obszarów ulegających morfodynamicznym procesom erozji i akumulacji, a co za tym idzie do poznania prawidłowości rozwoju brzegu. Szczególnie do tego celu przydatne są przetworzone fotogrametrycznie zdjęcia lotnicze, które pozwalają na przeprowadzenie szczegółowych, krótko- i długookresowych obserwacji obejmujących swoim zasięgiem znaczny obszar. Celem prezentowanych badań było odtworzenie położenia linii podstawy wydmy / podnóża klifu wybrzeża Gminy Rewal w latach 1938, 1951, 1973 i 1996 oraz określenie na tej podstawie wielkości zmian i tendencji rozwojowych brzegu. W wyniku przeprowadzonych pomiarów określono wielkość i tempo zmian zachodzących w tym rejonie. Wykazano wyraźny charakter erozyjny analizowanego wybrzeża. Zaobserwowano znaczne zróżnicowanie wielkości zmian nawet na sąsiadujących ze sobą, jednorodnych geomorfologicznie, odcinkach brzegu. Wyznaczenie szczególnie zagrożonych odcinków brzegu, o znacznej wielkości i dynamice zmian erozyjnych, ma duże znaczenie zarówno dla samorządów lokalnych, jak i instytucji odpowiedzialnych za bezpieczeństwo brzegu, szczególnie w aspekcie obserwowanego nasilania się zjawiska erozji.
In the last years, the intensity of erosion processes have been observed worldwide (Zawadzka 1999, Pruszak 2003, Living with erosion...2004). Consequently, coastal zone problems have become a focus of interest for researchers representing different scientific disciplines. The complexity of processes operating in the coastal zone, their causes, and effects are very difficult to describe and analyse. Previous efforts to explain interactions between the litho-, hydro-, and atmosphere were not successful. Using remote sensing data makes it possible to collect short- and long-time observation series on coastline changes, whereby coast development processes may be followed. Photogrammetric georeferenced aerial photographs, taken in different years, supply short and long-term observation series. The area of study was a 20 km long stretch of the western Polilsh coast in the Rewal municipality (Maritime Bureau km 380-360). Analyses were carried out based on 4 series of aerial photograph taken in 1938, 1951, 1973, and 1996. The 1996 series was used to develop an orthophotomap, which was subsequently used to calibrate the remaining series (1938, 1951, and 1973). The dune base /cliff foot line was identified on every picture in each year. The changes in the location was calculated in different time spans (1938-51, 1951-73, 1973-96). Results of the calculations were used to analyse trends in the coast development and the rate of the changes; classification of dynamics changes was effected as well. Based on coastline change diagrams for 1938-1951, 1951-1973 and 1973-96, the magnitude of coast accretion and erosion in the area were analysed. As indicated by the results obtained, the Rewal municipality coast is erosive. In all the periods analysed, a substantial diversity of the magnitude of changes was observed, even in neighbouring, morphologically homogenous areas. The temporal analysis indicates an increase in the length of the coast affected by erosion; at the same time, the accretion area has been reduced; the accumulative sections of the coast have become shorter and shorter. The situation recorded in aerial photographs represents a net effect of coastal processes, so measurements taken indirectly incorporate effects of every factor that produced changes in the dune base /cliff foot line position in an individual period, e.g., sea level changes, storm surge damages, impacts of coastal defence structure (link side effect), and other human activities. Application of aerial photographs to measurements of dune base line changes makes it possible to look for patterns in coastline development. Identification of dangerous sections of the coast, affected by heavy coastal erosion and high dynamics of changes is very important for spatial planning, coastal protection, and ther activities, particularly in the part of the coast exposed to erosion hazard.

Modern changes of environment are the result of many factors, of which anthropogenic activities and the development of infrastructure play the leading role in environmental, morphometric changes. The dynamics of expansion of construction lands, which until recently have changed only as a result of natural factors, makes it invariably important to analyse time changes and forecast potential effects of construction projects on the environment. A good source of information about changes, for example the course of rivers, hydrological conditions, diversity of vegetation in the areas of investment, are cartographic sources, in particular GIS techniques, satellite images, and aerial photographs. Proper assessing of the territory using GIS techniques may allow constructing roads not only with less damage to the environment and human health, but also avoiding technical problems, such as low bearing capacity of soils. The main objective of the study is to evaluate multitemporal changes of the environment in the course of the ongoing construction project, which is the construction of the A4 motorway in its Rzeszów Wschód – Jarosław Zachód section, in the area of the Wierzbna junction. The analysis was carried out on the basis of Landsat satellite images recorded in two different investment periods of the tested object: in 2006 – prior to the start of construction works, in 2015 – in the course of the ongoing construction works. In addition, the analysis of the obtained Landsat multitemporal satellite images made it possible to examine the morphology of the substrate conditions of river valleys of the San, Wislok, and Mleczka.

Floods are a great concern for people and infrastructure, and this is an is‑sue which has increased in several regions around the globe in recent years. This study aims to evaluate flood risk areas and create a flood risk map using in‑tegrated remote sensing data and a geographic information system (GIS) in the Wasit governorate – eastern Iraq. Specifically, GIS‑based multi‑criteria analy‑sis (MCA) was used to map flood hazard areas using a four‑criteria layer which is as follows: flow accumulation, slope, rainfall, and elevation. These four layers are standardized and combined using the overlay approach in ArcGIS software and a final map was produced. The study area was divided into five zones based on the results map, namely: very low, low, medium, high, and very high, according to the flood risk area. The resulting map indicates that over 60% of the study area is likely to experience a high and very high level of propensity of flooding. This study could be useful for government planners and decision‑makers to predict potential flooding areas and enhance flood management plans.

This is the second in a series of articles, the aim of which is to derive mathematical expressions describing the vertical distributions of the concentrations of different groups of phytoplankton pigments; these expressions are necessary in the algorithms for the remote sensing of the marine ecosystem. It presents formulas for the vertical profiles of the following groups of accessory phytoplankton pigments: chlorophylls b, chlorophylls c, phycobilins, photosynthetic carotenoids and photoprotecting carotenoids, all for the uppermost layer of water in the Baltic Sea with an optical depth of τ ≈ 5. The mathematical expressions for the first four of these five groups of pigments, classified as photosynthetic pigments, enable their concentrations to be estimated at different optical depths in the sea from known surface concentrations of chlorophyll a. The precision of these estimates is characterised by the following relative statistical errors according to logarithmic statistics σ−: approximately 44% for chlorophyll b, approx. 39% for chlorophyll c, approx. 43% for phycobilins and approx. 45% for photosynthetic carotenoids. On the other hand, the mathematical expressions describing the vertical distributions of photoprotecting carotenoid concentrations enable these to be estimated at different depths in the sea also from known surface concentrations of chlorophyll a, but additionally from known values of the irradiance in the PAR spectral range at the sea surface, with a statistical error σ− of approximately 42%
