Opis:
The term contrastive grammar is still ambiguous. In this paper we trace the unjustified synonymy of terms (confrontative grammar, comparative grammar, contrastive grammar) which lead to controversy among linguists and we attempt to introduce appropriate clarifications to explain the phenomenon. We can state that this linguistic direction is quite new, and its metalanguage is still in the process of development and formation. When studying contrastive grammar in the modern scientific functional-communicative paradigm, the focus of attention is directed to the issues of pragmalinguistics, that is the research, in addition to the actual meanings, of the semantics of linguistic units for designating objects of the environment, also the speech-thinking activity of speakers who use these units and listeners who interpret them; the possible situations of their application; the study of “language in context”; language research, taking into account the goal that is planned to be achieved in the communication process; the wide multidimensionality of the interpretation of the statement; the study of interactive means, taking into account grammatical meanings. The main category of pragmalinguistics is the category of evaluation, and therefore, the issue of contrastive grammar and contrastive description of languages is important to consider in the focus of the paradigm of the category of evaluation; in particular, this concerns the manifestation of each grammatical category.

Opis:
The author discusses theoretical issues of functional semantics, especially such directions of the contemporary anthropological linguistics as ethnosemantics and cognitive semantics. The diversification of the content of a lexical meaning under the influence of external, mainly pragmatic and cultural, factors is the primary object of interest here. Therefore, the author considers the degree of semantic specification of lexical units at various levels of interpersonal communication: both general and subcultural. As assumed by the contemporary cultural linguistics, a concept is considered to be a category of representation of knowledge encoded in language signs. The author gives arguments in favour of the view that the opposition of the (lexical, general) meaning and concept is gradual and concerns the scope of semantic information encoded in the sign in accordance with adaptive requirements.

This paper aims to demonstrate mechanisms of intertextual strategies, which require the recipient to be familiar with pragmatic codes, to discover references and allusions, and to be able to discern various textual relations. The analyses have been conducted on the example of four titles: W Sieci (On the Web), Polityka (Politics), Najwyższy Czas (High Time), Przegląd (Overview). The motivation for the research was the conviction that the title page in opinion-forming periodicals functions as a product of mass culture and can serve as the basis for describing the area of interests of the contemporary human being.

The article deals with the stylistic peculiarities of the translations made by R. Pevear and L. Volokhonsky, L. and A. Maud, J. Carmichael of the novel Anna Karenina by L. Tolstoy on the basis of pragmastylistics and comparative analysis. It tries to analyze the text of the novel using the lingo-stylistic characteristics in accordance with the national bias in the way of thinking and individual creative preferences of every translator taking an attempt to introduce a foreign picture of the world to his countrymen. It underlines the impact of Tolstoy’s complicated attitude towards the customs and traditions of the Russian Orthodox church and the specific relationship of the author of the novel with God and its manifestation in the description of the heroes’ characters. In stresses how vital it may turn out to preserve the author’s ideostyle - lexis and syntax (the word order, the choice of them and the length of the sentences) for the successful interpretation of the writer’s views and stance by the reader.

This article offers a multifaceted interpretation of the controversial "miękiszon" neologism, which Minister of Justice Zbigniew Ziobro used to provoke Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, just as journalists and media scholars suspected. The article uses the tools of pragmalinguistics, rhetoric, and discourse theory to prove the term’s performative and vulgar character. It also attempts to popularize the pragmatic-rhetorical methods of text interpretation.

The paper prepared on the basis of 842 hand-written letters of Zofia Kraszewska to her husband Józef Ignacy, is the author’s next publication of 19th century epistolography.Cosidering the specific features of family letters the author starts from the theory of literaturę, pragmatics and sociolinguistics, which describes variant of language in different social groups.Then he presents some types of derivatives used by Kraszewska to show to the addres- see the situation context of writing, to express her permanent sensitives and temporary affections, as well as to fortify the pragmatic impact of particular letters. They are the equivalent of conversation and should compensate the lack of face-to face contact bet- ween the wife and her lamous husband.

The aims of this paper are to review research literature on the role that the second language (L2) and foreign language (FL) environments actually play in the development of learners’ target language (TL) pragmatic ability, and also to speculate as to the extent to which individual factors can offset the advantages that learners may have by being in the L2 context while they are learning. The paper starts by defining pragmatics and by problematizing this definition. Then, attention is given to research literature dealing with the learning of pragmatics in an L2 context compared to an FL context. Next, studies on the role of pragmatic transfer are considered, with subsequent attention given to the literature on the incidence of pragmatic transfer in FL as opposed to L2 contexts. Finally, selected studies on the role of motivation in the development of pragmatic ability are examined. In the discussion section, a number of pedagogical suggestions are offered: the inclusion of pragmatics in teacher development, the use of authentic pragmatics materials, motivating learners to be more savvy about pragmatics, and supporting learners in accepting or challenging native-speaker norms. Suggestions as to further research in the field are also offered.

Określeniu statusu dowcipów dialogowych jako wypowiedzi cytowanych oraz spojrzenie na tekst komiczny z perspektywy teorii tekstu umożliwiły wskazanie pewnych właściwości wypowiedzi komicznych i ich miejsca wśród innych form językowych. Dowcip dialogowy zdefiniowano jako bachtinowski genre mowy i przedstawiono z punktu widzenia danych aktów komunikacji językowej. Te ostatnie zbadano zarówno jako wypowiedzi dialogowe, jak i formy cytowane, rozważane jako całości. Stwierdzono nacechowanie wszystkich funkcji mowy z punktu widzenia komizmu badanych dowcipów. Scharakteryzowano nadawców i odbiorców, kod, przekaz, kontakt i kontekst w dwóch powyższych płaszczyznach. Przyjęcie podwójnej optyki badawczej okazało się konieczne także w opisie mechanizmów komizmu wykorzystującym podstawowy aparat pojęciowy pragmatyki językoznawczej. Wewnątrz dialogów wyróżniono: konkretne rodzaje implikacji lub presupozycji konwersacyjnych, kontrast implikacji, przeciwstawienie implikacji i presupozycji (konwersacyjnych lub konwencjonalnych), opozycję presupozycji, hiperbolizację presupozycji oraz kontrast implikacji lub presupozycji z sensem wypowiedzi. Wskazano również rodzaje naruszanych maksym konwersacyjnych w poszczególnych wypowiedziach dialogowych i w dowcipach jako formach cytowanych. Wykorzystywane są wszystkie maksymy, nie zawsze naraz w jednym dialogu, choć bywają i takie przykłady. Najczęściej nie respektuje się maksymy sposobu i ilości.
Determining dialogic jokes as quoted statements as well as looking at a comic text from the text theory perspective made it possible to point out certain features of humoristic statements and establish their position among other linguistic forms. A dialogic joke has been defined as Bakhtin’s speech genre and has been described from the point of view of given communicative speech acts. The latter have been analyzed as dialogic statements and quoted forms seen as wholes. From the point of view of the comic aspect of analyzed jokes all speech functions have been found marked. Senders, recipients, code, message, contact and context on the two above mentioned planes have been determined. Adopting a double research perspective turned out to be also necessary in describing mechanisms of humour using an essential term apparatus of pragmalinguistics. Concrete implication types or conversational presuppositions, implication contrast, implication and presupposition juxtaposition (both conventional and conversational), presupposition opposition, presupposition hyperbole, as well as implication or presupposition contrast with utterance meaning all have been found in dialogues. What has also been found were types of breaching conversational maxims in individual dialogic statements as well as in jokes treated as quoted statements. All maxims are used, though not all of them in each dialogue and every time, yet such examples can also be fund. The maxims that are breached most frequently are the Maxim of Manner and the Maxim of Quantity.

The contemporary translation strategies concerning equivalents of names from the field in translations of the New Testament actualise the conclusions drawn by researchers, who confront the nominations that are in use in the Polish language with their perceptions by those in question, that is black people. A response to a certain depreciation of the semantics of the lexemes Murzyn, Czarny (when used as nouns) is the selection of a safer strategy, which consists in transferring the adapted form from the source text (Etiop, Etiopczyk, Królowa etiopska, Niger).

Emotions are an indispensable part of human life, and consequently of speech. On the other hand, they are put under pressure by the culture – not least by the good nursery – so that, politely, one does not always express directly what is important to one‘s heart. Goethe summed it up in Faust II as follows: “In German you lie when you are polite” (see also Szczęk 2012). Sometimes, however, one is forced to let the emotion run wild. This is exemplified in the article on Günter Grass’ Hundejahre and Peter Handke’s Publikumsbe¬schimpfung. On the other hand, the article focuses on an important aspect of the subconscious emotive, namely verbal aggression as a substitute for assault. The author joins Meinunger (2017: 11 f.), where he says: “Ranting is much better than his reputation. […] It is essentially a substitute for physical violence. […] must be seen as a victory of culture over nature.” At the same time he is contradicted when he also summarizes hate speech under ranting.

The paper is based on marital and family letters; the author analyses them using pragmalinguistic and cultural linguistic methods. The article focuses on the phrases which copy or replace the gestures people make during face-to-face communication. The analysed expressions inform mainly about kissing, blessing, and the need of physical closeness. They are used to maintain emotional bond between the distanced family members. Relating to other sets of correspondence from the past, the phrases used by the Pawlikowscy are characterized by freshness and originality; they testify to the creativity of the authors, drawing from the morphological and lexical resources of the 19th century Polish language.

This paper examines the discursive means by which authors of scientific texts in the humanities and social sciences take a critical stance on the theses of their colleagues. Focusing on controversy rather than polemics, and using a corpus in French and English borrowed from Language Science, translation and didactics, the paper presents rhetorical figures and linguistic structures that maintain conversational propriety despite the emotionality of disagreement.
Artykuł analizuje dyskursywne środki, za pomocą których autorzy tekstów naukowych z zakresu nauk humanistycznych i społecznych krytycznie odnoszą się do tez swoich kolegów. Koncentrując się raczej na kontrowersjach niż na polemikach i wykorzystując korpus w języku francuskim i angielskim zapożyczony z nauki o języku, tłumaczeń i dydaktyki, artykuł przedstawia figury retoryczne i struktury językowe, które zachowują poprawność konwersacyjną pomimo emocjonalności sporu.

Opis:
The paper analyses the language of two Italian films set in different historical and social contexts. The Leopard (Il Gattopardo) by Luchino Visconti is set in Sicily in 1860, on the background of contemporary political events, with a language corresponding both with the historical period and the social setting. In the film Perfect Strangers (Perfetti sconosciuti) by Paolo Genovese, old friends meet at a dinner table. With their informal talk, the characters’ language strives to be as close as possible to everyday language. The aim of the article is to demonstrate the differences between the language of the first film and the “natural” language of everyday life of the second one. Through comparative analysis, the article demonstrates how the differences in the historical social contexts determine the language of both films. Within the framework of pragmalinguistics, some aspects of the modality and of the information structure of the sentence are taken into consideration.
Questo articolo si concentra sull’analisi del linguaggio filmico di due film italiani appartenenti a contesti storici e sociali diversi: Il Gattopardo di Luchino Visconti, film che racconta la Sicilia del 1860, sullo sfondo degli eventi politici dell’epoca, con un linguaggio corrispondente sia al periodo storico che all’ambiente, e il film Perfetti sconosciuti di Paolo Genovese, che racconta di un incontro informale tra alcuni amici, in cui gli autori si sforzano di avvicinare il più possibile il linguaggio alla lingua quotidiana. L’obiettivo del lavoro è dimostrare quali siano le differenze tra il parlato filmico e il parlato naturale; nel processo di analisi comparativa si mirerà a dimostrare che così come il contesto storico e sociale dei due film è diverso, allo stesso modo è diverso e diversificato il linguaggio. Nel quadro teorico della pragmalinguistica vanno considerati i fattori della situazione comunicativa e alcuni aspetti della modalità e della struttura informativa dell’enunciato.

The article examines the contexts of the verb to confide given in the dictionaries of contemporary Polish and in the works on semantics. The aim of the paper is to establish whether all the common modern expression, which communicatively competent Pole could describe as he / she confides, contain all the definitional features of that verb.

The paper focuses on how nonnative teachers of a target language (NNTs) deal with pragmatics in their classes. It starts with a discussion of what pragmatics entails. Next, issues relating to the teaching of pragmatics are identified, such as the language background of the teacher, comparisons between second- (L2) and foreign-language (FL) instruction, and the potential role of digital media and other means in providing models for pragmatic behavior. Then, an international survey is presented which probed into the experiences of NNTs of various languages while teaching the pragmatics of their language of instruction. A total of 113 teachers were asked to indicate what they taught with regard to pragmatics, 30 native-language teachers (NTs) and 83 NNTs. They were also asked to report on their experience as teachers of L2 and FL pragmatics (e.g., if they encountered classroom moments when they did not feel like an authority on some aspect of pragmatics, what they did about it). Since pragmatics is a meeting of language and culture, the teacher respondents were asked to assess their knowledge regarding pragmalinguistics (i.e., the language forms) and sociopragmatics (sociocultural knowledge). In addition, they were asked to give their opinion regarding similarities and differences between the teaching of FL as opposed to L2 pragmatics, as this traditional dichotomy gives way to a more hybrid reality in an increasingly globalized world. Similarly, they were asked about their methods for teaching pragmatics (e.g., their use of digital media and their handling of dialect differences). Finally, they were asked to suggest areas in which they would like to see research conducted that would inform the teaching of pragmatics. The paper reports the findings from the study, including statistical differences in reported teaching of criticism, sarcasm, and cursing, as well as in the use of digital media and in having students gather data on pragmatics.

Autor konfrontuje je z tzw. tradycyjną polską grzecznością językową i wskazuje na fundamentalną zmianę w modelu grzeczności, polegającą na zmianie orientacji: z nastawienia na TY (na rozmówcę) na nastawienie na JA (na nadawcę). Wśród najważniejszych czynników zmian wymienia i omawia egalitaryzm grzecznościowy i dążenie do skracania dystansu pomiędzy uczestnikami komunikacji, przyspieszenie cywilizacyjne, kult młodości, emancypację kobiet i ogólną amerykanizację (makdonaldyzację) stylu życia – powiązaną z wpływami postmodernizmu.
Polish language politeness – then and now The paper discusses the major changes that have occurred in Polish linguistic etiquette and that have resulted mainly from the changing communication styles of young Poles. The author juxtaposes these changes with the so-called traditional language politeness in Polish and points to a fundamental transformation in the politeness model that involves a change in the orientation from You (the hearer) to I (the speaker). Among the most significant factors that have influenced this shift we address the following: politeness egalitarianism, the tendency to remove distance between interlocutors, speeding civilisation development, the cult of youth, women’s emancipation, as well as the Americanization (McDonaldization) of lifestyle, related to the influence of postmodernism.

W przestrzeni publicznej istnieją różnorodne sposoby wyrażania bycia społecznością olimpijską, zjednoczonej ideami barona Pierre’a de Coubertina. Taki charakter mają znicz olimpijski, pięć kółek olimpijskich, flaga olimpijska i wiele znaków graficznych, werbalnych i dźwiękowych, obecnych w symbolicznej przestrzeni publicznej. Jednym z tego rodzaju spajających „olimpijczyków” komunikatów miały być także muzyka, piosenki i hymn olimpijski. Kilkadziesiąt piosenek, które przez ostatnie 30 lat były kojarzone z igrzyskami opiera się na semantyce emocji i interpretacji ducha, płomienia, snu, marzeń, które w zależności od autora tekstu mają bardziej lub tylko nieco mniej sztampowy charakter. Nie są zbyt gęste semantycznie i pragmatycznie, ale aktywują różne konteksty i ramy interpretacyjne oraz są niedookreślone tematycznie (nie wiadomo często, czy są o sporcie czy o miłości). Z pewnością jest w nich komunikacja nie wprost, a kooperacja opiera się na presupozycjach i implikaturach.
In public space there is a variety of means to express the feeling of belonging to the Olympic community united by the ideas of Baron Pierre de Coubertin. The Olympic torch, five Olympic circles and the Olympic flag all represent this, so do many graphic, verbal and sound signs present in the symbolic public space. One of such messages uniting ‘the Olympians’ would be music, Olympic songs and the Olympic anthem. The several dozens of songs associated with the Olympic games throughout last 30 years are based on the semantics of emotion and the interpretation of spirit, flame, dream which, depending on the author, are more or less clichéd. They are not overly substantial in semantic and pragmatic aspect, but they do activate different contexts and interpretational frames; they are also vague in terms of the theme (it is often unclear whether they are about sports or love). Surely the communication in them is not direct and cooperation is based on presuppositions and implications.

The theme of the article is a description of possibilities of articulating a directive speech act. The author makes the form of expressing a DEMAND conditional on non-linguistic relationships between participants of a communication act. Based on the degree of interlocutors’ interdependence the form of a DEMAND may be the one of superiority, subordination or symmetry. The article describes various forms of verbalizing DEMANDS depending on relationships between a speaker and a listener as well as the ability of interpreting the directive speech act by the speaker and the listener.

Autorka, przywołując skomplikowane, wieloskładnikowe zależności rządzące sytuacją komunikacyjną, aktualizuje wiedzę na ten temat w odniesieniu do nowego, błyskawicznie upowszechnionego kontekstu kształcenia zdalnego. Złożoność narzędzi, udostępnionych przez pragmatykę językową, umożliwia opis nowego zdarzenia dydaktycznego, uruchamiającego konieczność przedstawienia dwóch kluczowych odniesień: realnej sytuacji, w którą zanurzony jest każdy uczestnik spotkania, oraz wspólnego dla wszystkich uczestników kontekstu wirtualnego. Autorka dowodzi, że oba wymiary wzajemnie się warunkują, wskazuje jednocześnie, że opisywane mechanizmy oddziaływania podczas zdarzenia komunikacyjnego twarzą w twarz (np. zabieranie głosu, podtrzymywanie kontaktu wzrokowego, sygnalizowanie emocji) wymagają weryfikacji, aktualizacji w warunkach zdalności.
By referring to complex and multi-component relationships governing the communication situation, Monika Grzelka updates the existing knowledge on the subject in relation to the new context of remote learning, which has undergone rapid dissemination. The complex tools provided by the linguistic pragmatics are helpful in describing a new educational event that makes necessary the presentation of two key frames of reference: a real situation in which each participant in the meeting is immersed and a virtual context common to all the participants. Grzelka argues that both these dimensions determine each other (and create a hybrid situation). She also points out that the conditions of remote learning make necessary the verification and updating of the mechanisms of influence used during a face-to-face communication event (e.g. taking the floor, maintaining eye contact, signalling emotions).

Opis konkretnych realizacji orzeczeń modalnych w wypowiedzeniach dotyczy niektórych aspektów modalności zdaniowej i fakultatywnej oraz wybranych zagadnień systemowych, sytuacyjnych i interakcyjnych języka. Biorąc pod uwagę kontekst pragmatycznojęzykowy i interakcyjny konstrukcji modalnych i innych, obecnych w tekstach, zwracamy uwagę na jakość kompetencji dyskursywnej dzieci przedszkolnych.
The paper concerns the analysis of the modal logic and intentional constructions with the modal verb móc in preschool discourse. Some aspects of pragmalinguistic and systemic-functional theory provide tools to characterize the ways in which children use constructions in the colloquial-conversational language and text. Our analysis is focused on the sense of predicate móc in particular applications and on the process of creation of indirect acts of speech. It also provides information on the development of discourse competence of children.

Eine besondere Stelle, nicht nur im Rahmen der sprachwissenschaftlichen Forschungen, sondern auch in anderen Forschungsgebieten, wird durch Erscheinungen rund um Humor eingenommen. Im Projekt wird darauf hingearbeitet, Strategien und Mechanismen zur Humorerzeugung in deutschen und britischen Panel-Shows zu ermitteln. Mündliche spontan geäußerte Texte sind bislang nicht hinreichend untersucht worden. Das Wesen der Komödie hat seinen Ursprung in der Wahrnehmung von inkongruenten Elementen, welche die Struktur oder den Inhalt eines humoristischen Aktes ausmachen. Fokus wird auf die Darstellung dessen gelegt, wie humoristische Inhalte geschaffen werden. Die Erläuterungen basieren auf den pragmalinguistischen Konzepten und GTVH, wobei eine Erweiterung durch Ansätze der kognitiven Linguistik durchaus möglich ist. Ins Forschungsfeld werden sowohl axiologische Erkenntnisse als auch kulturelle Hintergründe miteinbezogen. Die Analyse wurde dank Videoclips durchgeführt, die deutschen und britischen Panel-Shows entnommen worden sind. Es ermöglichte, eine komparative Grundlage zu schaffen, um sprachlich-kulturelle Erkenntnisse zu gewinnen. Die gesammelten Einsichten sind dabei äußerst behilflich, Unterschiede zwischen den verglichenen Programmen desselben Genres offenzulegen.
A special place among the research conducted in the field of linguistics, but also other scientific disciplines, is occupied by the broadly understood issues of humour. The aim of the project is primarily to show ways and mechanisms of generating humorous effects in German and British panel shows. Spoken spontaneous humorous utterances have not undergone sufficient studies. The existence of comedy has its origin in the noticing of inconsistent elements constituting structure or content of a comical act. Emphasis has been put on presenting how humorous content is constructed. The explanations were delivered thanks to pragmalinguistic theories and GTVH. There is possibility to include methods used in cognitive linguistics as well. In the research field remain axiological elements as well as the cultural background. The compilation consisting from video clips from both- German and British panel shows, allowed the creation of a comparative base to reach linguistic and cultural conclusions revealing differences and similarities between the compared programmes of the same type that were produced in different countries.
