Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study on the fatigue strength in pendulum bending natural and modified pinewood. The contents of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were determined in wood-polymer for mechanical and rheological properties. The study of the bending fatigue strength and creep was realized on suitably prepared samples and research positions. Test results were documented in the form of charts and scraps. Differences in the decay of the natural and modified wood samples were observed after the attempt of the fatigue strength. The various mechanical properties of the sapwood, hardwood, and the polymer, influence on the stiffness of the individual components and consequently the whole composite. The process of fatigue degrades the structure of natural wood and wood polymer composite, the result is a gradual reduction of its stiffness. The Study of the creep behaviour was realized in stress in the sample of the level of 30% of the tensile strength. The samples were loaded longitudinally and transversely to the direction of the fibres. Significant differences of composite deformations were observed both as for the direction of the loaded fibres as well as the natural and modified wood. The character of changes in the fatigue strength and creep behaviour of the studied materials is implies to the influence of the polymer content on mechanical properties of modified wood. The tests carried out on account of the possibility of using wood polymer composite in sea constructions. Research carried out in connection with the possibility of the use of wood polymer composite marine construction. Modified wood can be used for keel blocks, decks, fender beam, bearings cantilevered shaft lines and the construction of yachts.

Opis:
The paper presents a method, developed by the authors, for manufacturing polymer composites with the matrix manufactured in a layered manner (via 3D printing – Fused Deposition Modeling) out of a thermoplastic material. As an example of practical application of this method, functional prototypes are presented, which were used as elements of foundry tooling – patterns for sand molding. In case of manufacturing prototype castings or short series of products, foundries usually cooperate with modeling studios, which produce patterns by conventional, subtractive manufacturing technologies. If patterns have complex shapes, this results in high manufacturing costs and significantly longer time of tooling preparation. The method proposed by the authors allows manufacturing functional prototypes in a short time thanks to utilizing capabilities of additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology. Thanks to using two types of materials simultaneously (ABS combined with chemically hardened resins), the produced prototypes are capable of carrying increased loads. Moreover, the method developed by the authors is characterized by manufacturing costs lower than in the basic technology of Fused Deposition Modeling. During the presented studies, the pattern was produced as a polymer composite and it was used to prepare a mold and a set of metal castings.

Opis:
A composite material consisting of woody skeleton and polymerized methacrylate has been developed and characterized. This paper presents an experimental program and the results concerning mechanical properties and strength of wood modified with polymerized methacrylate. In the article, there are examples of structural elements made of natural wood. Wood is a composite consisting of the layers of soft and hard wood. Wood is a composite and porous material. The porosity, which is a serious defect of wood, may be simultaneously its advantage. Wood saturation with different impregnates to minimize its disadvantages. If the wood pores will fill the monomer there is obtained the wood polymer composite. This composite is classified as of fiber composites. Such composite is effectively protected against degradation; it is durable in use, and show an improvement in mechanical properties. Design constructions of surface modified wood require the determination of fundamental material constants. Therefore, for the determination of these parameters is very important obtaining the appropriate research material. The surface impregnation of wood allows obtaining strength characteristics in a function of polymer content. This allows to model it's, and then design and perform specific ship structures. In the wood, there are three directions in relation to the annual rings. Wood properties, especially mechanical properties, are different in the selected directions. For the computation takes the orthogonal anisotropy in which there are three mutually orthogonal planes of symmetry, for which there is symmetry properties of the wood.

Opis:
The analysis of polymeric composites can be quite challenging because the samples are often of complex nature due to the presence of various groups of additives, compounding ingredients, and fillers. In this contribution, changes of hardness of Polypropylene (PP) composites during and after the exposure of materials to UV chamber and low temperatures were investigated. The particulate fillers talc and chalk in weight fraction from 10 to 50% and montmorillonite (MMT) in weight fraction 4% were used as fillers in the polypropylene matrix. The composites were mixed in the extruder while the length, diameter of screw, as well as the number of grooves in the feed zone were changed. The influence of ageing – UV radiation and low temperature was examined by change of Shore hardness after 360h and 720h of exposure. According to the performed tests we can conclude that the tested materials may be exposed to UV radiation and low temperature of -20ºC without significant changes of hardness.

Opis:
Developments in nuclear technology in the last century have lead to the use of radiation in different areas of human activity. These are not just the energetics but also food, agriculture, medicine, industry and science. Thus, radiation has become an inevitable phenomenon in our lives. Since we cannot isolate radiation from our life, the radiation protection methods should be available. As alternatives to conventional radiation prevention methods, such as lead and heavy concrete shielding, more functional materials need to become the focus of research. The development of the least harmful to the environment, easily applicable, flexible radiation shields has become very important. In this study, silicon matrix composite panels, doped with different ratios of barite and boron carbide, were produced and characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Gamma and neutron radiation shielding properties of these materials were investigated. The results have been compared with the lead as the standard shielding material.

Opis:
Investigations were performed to examine the possibility of using an electronic nose to monitor development of fungal microflora during the first eighteen days of rapeseed storage. The Cyranose 320 device manufactured by Sensigent was used to analyse volatile organic compounds. Each sample of infected material was divided into three parts and the degree of spoilage was measured in three ways: analysis of colony forming units, determination of ergosterol content, and measurement of volatile organic compounds with the e-nose. Principal component analysis was performed on the generated patterns of signals and six groups of different spoilage levels were isolated. An analysis of sensorgrams for a few sensors with a strong signal for each group of rapeseed spoilage was performed. The ratio of the association time to the steady state was calculated. This ratio was different for the low level and the highest level of ergosterol and colony forming units. The results have shown that the e-nose can be a useful tool for quick estimation of the degree of rapeseed spoilage.

W planowaniu operacji wojskowych konieczna jest znajomość gotowości technicznej i bojowej pojazdów. Przy organizowaniu między innymi operacji transportowych istotnego znaczenia nabiera znajomość potencjału przebiegowego poszczególnych pojazdów. Dotychczas, w sytuacji, gdy elementy decydujące o zdatności pojazdu były wykonywane z metalu, potencjał taki szacowano na podstawie róSnicy pomiędzy resursem pojazdu a wskazaniami licznika przebiegu (pracy). W niniejszym opracowaniu wykazano niewłaściwość takiego podejścia w odniesieniu do elementów wykonanych z polimerów.
In the process of planning military operations, it is necessary to know technical and combat readiness of vehicles. Knowledge of the pass mode potential of individual vehicles is very important while organizing transport operations. So far, in a situation where the elements determining the suitability of a vehicle were made of metal, such potential has been estimated on the basis of the difference between the service life of a vehicle and meter readings. The following study demonstrates the inappropriateness of such an approach in relation to elements made of polymers. A simplified way of assessing loss of the pass mode potential (based on measurements of the labor symptoms) has been presented based on an example of a rubber and metal joint of a caterpillar. It was found that during 8 years the storage of these elements, their utility potential loss is up to 40% of the initial potential.

The paper presents a microscopic analysis of the surface and fracture of aluminium castings produced using the lost-wax method for patterns made of a composite material, i.e. polyethylene with the addition of bentonite. Castings are made of AlSi7 aluminium alloy (silumin) in a plaster mould. A new type of polymer waxes enriched with bentonite was used to obtain new composites, minimizing the defects caused by the casting production process. The castings were made in the centrifugal casting process. The prepared plaster moulds were removed from the furnace and poured with liquid aluminium alloy (AlSi7) at 750°C. The surface and fracture of the castings was analysed using an optical digital microscope type VHX-7000 manufactured by KEYENCE. It has been proven that the studied castings feature surface defects (raw surface defects) in the form of high roughness and the presence of bentonite inclusions classified as casting contamination. During the tests, shape defects related to mechanical damage were also.

Opis:
Wood is one of the oldest construction materials. Nowadays, in the shipbuilding industry wood is almost forgotten. Wood has a lot of advantages in comparison to other materials, e.g. steel. However, some of wood characteristics are inconvenient. Layers are integrated part of wood construction - it is a natural composite. It is a big advantage of the wood, but there is too big difference between soft and hard wood's layer. Modified wood might be very interesting “new” material for marine industry. Especially, polymer-wood composite seems to be very promising. One of the authors developed surface saturation methodology of the wood by polymer. Several measurement tests were performed. Some of the new material characteristics have been specify as a results of the tests. Stiffness and averaged material constants have been determined as well as material data of separate composite layers. The experiments were simulated by numerical calculations. Numerical analysis was compared with measurements. After model verification, several other analyses (e.g. detailed stress distribution in the composite) were performed. That kind of analysis of material data where very difficult, or even impossible, for obtain by measurements. Numerical analysis was performed by Patran-Nastran commercial software based on Finite Element Method. The authors plan to use experimental and calculations data for more specified analysis (included dynamic analysis) and plan to improve that polymer-wood composite can be used in marine industry with benefits.

A heavily Si-doped GaN/polymer hybrid structure with p-type poly(3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene):beta-1,3-glucan (PEDOT nanoparticle) interface layer has been fabricated. The Si-doped GaN thin film with carrier concentration of 1 × $10^{19} cm^{-3}$ was grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The PEDOT nanoparticle with various sizes ranging from 60 to 120 nm was synthesized via a miniemulsion polymerization process. The electrical conductivity of the PEDOT nanoparticle is less than 1.2 S/cm. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristic of the hybrid structure shows diode-like behavior. The I-V characteristic was examined in the framework of the thermionic emission model. The ideality factor of the structure without PEDOT nanoparticle interface layer is 12.9. However, the ideality factor of the hybrid structure with PEDOT nanoparticle interface layer is obtained as 1.9. The value of ideality factor is dramatically decreased by inserting the PEDOT nanoparticle interface layer.

The quest for a better bone implant and mimicing the nature led to a new material preparation. This article presents further research on Robocasting and controlled porosity bioceramic scaffolds. The aim was to fabricate a compo-site material based on hydroxyapatie scaffold. Because natural bone consists of two main compounds: mineral matrix (hydroxyapatite ≈70%) and organic part (mostly collagen fibrils ≈30%). It was decided to strengthen pure HA robocasted scaffolds with the poly-lactide L-glicolide (PGLA 85/15) which is resorbable polymer widely used in medical applications. HA scaffolds were embedded in PGLA. Newly produced composites were tested and results were compared with pure HA scaffolds. Structural and mechanical testing was conducted. It was observed that HA/PGLA composite has much higher values of Fmax and σ when compared with pure HA. Important fact which has to be highlighted is that after compressive test pure HA samples turned into rubble whereas HA/PGLA stayed coherent and kept their shape.

This article presents joining methods (welding and sealing) of single-polymer composite materials in a hot air stream. The research material was created using the film-stacking method, which involves pressing successive fractions of polyethylene terephthalate-modified with glycol (PET-G) at defined technological conditions, such as pressure, temperature, and time. Joining method analysis was carried out based on the tensile test results. Analysis of the obtained results showed that the properties of the overlapped weld joint were the best because they were closest to the original materials. In contrast, PET-G welded joint properties were the worst because the PET-G welded joint does not contain fibers, which enhanced the weld; therefore, the fastest breakage of the material was observed at the welding location. For the overlapped weld, the weld itself is more resistant because the joint surface is influenced by friction forces between joined materials.
