Opis:
Poly(ethylene glycol) is used for coating of colloidal particles and other surfaces for gaining biocompatibility. Particularly, it can be introduced into magnetic fluids. The aim of the current study was to reveal the structural characteristics of poly(ethylene glycol) in neat $D_2O$ using small-angle neutron scattering technique. Solutions of poly(ethylene glycol) (at temperature of 37°C) with different molecular weights in an interval of 400-20000 were investigated. It is concluded that at low concentrations (less than 2% of mass fraction) poly(ethylene glycol) molecules behave as Gaussian coils.

Opis:
The method for the synthesis of either unmodified magnesium hydroxide or functionalised with poly(ethylene glycols) of different molecular weights and physicochemical properties of the products are presented. Magnesium hydroxide was obtained by the precipitation method under well defined conditions from ammonia solution and different magnesium salts. Dispersive properties of the products were characterised by polydispersity index, particle size, as well as SEM images. Crystalline structure of magnesium hydroxide samples were determined by the WAXS method. To confirm the presence of functional groups introduced by appropriate modifiers the samples were subjected to spectroscopic analysis. Electrokinetic stability of the studied samples was determined on the basis of zeta potential dependence vs. pH measurements. The modification has resulted in reduction of particle diameters in some Mg(OH)2 samples.

Opis:
For the first time, the technological aspects of the highly productive and selective synthesis of UV-reactive poly(ethylene glycol) mono-1-propenyl ether monomers was developed. The solvent-free isomerization of model commercial available 2-allyloxyethanol and allyloxypoly(ethylene glycol) derivatives, type Allyl–[OCH2CH2]n–OH, n = 1–5, into a 1-propenyl derivative under the homogeneous catalysis conditions using the ruthenium complexes were evaluated. The effect of a various reaction conditions (i.e. the concentration of [Ru] complex, the reaction temperature, reaction gas atmosphere) together with trace amounts of allyl hydroperoxides formed via autoxidation reaction of allyl substrates on the productivity of catalyst was examined in detail. Moreover, the significant role of the allyl substrate structures on the catalytic activity of ruthenium catalysts were also recognized. The optimal parameters of the scaled-up synthesis together with productivity of catalyst were first established.

Opis:
The complexes of poly(ethyl methacrylate-co-N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (P(EMA-co-VP)) gel with poly- (ethylene glycol) (PEG) stabilized by the hydrogen bonds were prepared. It was found that both the concentration and the molecular weight of PEG have a strong effect on the P(EMA-co-VP) gel. When PEG was introduced into the P(EMA-co-VP) gel, the glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the complexes decreases with the decreasing of PEG molecular weight. In such a system, the maximum molecular weight of PEG required for the complex formation is no more than 2000, and P(EMA-co-VP)/PEG complexes are a homogeneous amorphous phase, which was studied by FTIR, XRD, TEM, and DSC.

Opis:
The aim of this case study is to generate several poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate-based hydrogels using additive manufacturing processes. The interest here is in determining different material properties. The test specimens are produced using a commercial stereolithography system. For this purpose, three formulations are prepared. The basis in each case is PEGDA with average molecular weights of 700 Mn, 575 Mn and 250 Mn. A photoinitiator and a UV absorber are added to ensure spatial and temporal cross-linking. Furthermore, the formulations are tested for their material properties according to ISO standards using tensile, compression and hardness tests. An equivalence can be found in the tensile and compression tests. The results with the molecular weights of 700 Mn and 575 Mn show values close to each other. However, the results of the material tests with the molecular weight of 250 Mn are ten times higher. The Shore A hardness values also correlate with the previous tests. These results between molecular weight and material property are particularly striking. A novel aspect of this method could be that the properties determined of these tailor-made high-performance polymers can be applied to different areas of application in an organism.

Opis:
In this study, the role of polymer in precipitation has been examined by studying the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the formation of calcium carbonate particles. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by several techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and particle size distribution analysis. In the absence of polymer, the mixing of reagents in an aqueous solution led to the formation of calcite crystals. Introduction of poly(ethylene glycol) molecules reduced the rate of crystallization process, and the effect was concentration dependent. In the presence of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 % of PEG, after 5 minutes of precipitation initiation, vaterite microspheres appeared in the system and which were transformed into calcite crystals after 24 hours. The calcium carbonate obtained with PEG was characterized by smaller sized particles in comparison with the ones without polymer.

Opis:
In this study the role of PEG and PEO-PPO-PEO block copolymers molecular weight in precipitation of calcium carbonate was examined. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray, SEM and particle size distribution analysis. In absence and presence of modifiers, mixing of the reagents led to the formation of calcite crystals. The calcium carbonate obtained with poly(ethylene glycol) and block copolymers was characterized by smaller diameter in comparison with the one without modifiers. It was observed that using compounds with different molecular weights has no obvious effect on the form and properties of precipitated calcium carbonate particles.

Poly(ethylene glycol dimethacrylate-co-1-vinyl-1,2,4-triazole/carbon nanotube, single-walled)/n-GaAs ([P(EGDMA-VTAZ)-CNSW]/n-GaAs) diode was fabricated by using surface polymerization method. Electrical properties were carried out at several temperatures. Dark current mechanisms were investigated by using current-voltage (I-V) measurements. It was shown that the fabricated structure exhibited rectification behaviour that makes it a good candidate for electronic device applications.
