Opis:
Tworzenie nazwisk i imion w języku chińskim kieruje się odmiennymi regułami niż na Zachodzie. Sama kategoria „imienia” i „nazwiska” jest pewną kalką zachodniej koncepcji nazw osobowych nakładaną na język chiński. Zarówno tworzenie imion (名字 míngzì), jak i nazwisk (姓氏 xìngshì) oraz pseudonimów (号 hào) ma swoją tradycję. Chińczycy używają ok. 200 nazwisk i nieskończonej liczby imion. W tworzeniu osobowych nazw własnych istotnym elementem jest obraz znaku, który niesie ze sobą treści określające nazywaną osobę, a nie jedynie fonetyka. „Konwertowanie” imion i nazwisk europejskich na chińskie za pomocą fonetyka prowadzić może do szeregu nieporozumień znaczeniowych. Obraz znaku często komunikuje treści związane z charakterem, wrażliwością, pragnieniami, osobowością. Zostało to ukazane na przykładzie nazw Romana Malka (馬雷凱 Mǎ Léikǎi) i Dariusza Klejnowskiego-Różyckiego (柯達理 Kē Dálǐ).
Creating names in Chinese is guided by rules different than in the West. The very category of a “name” and a “surname” is a kind of a carbon copy of the Western concept of personal names, applied to the Chinese. Both the formation of names (名字 míngzì) and surnames (姓氏 xìngshì) as well as nicknames (hào 号) has its own tradition. The Chinese use about 200 surnames and an infinite number of names. While creating personal names – the character image is an important element which carries the contents of defining a person called in a specific way, not only the phonetics. The “converting” of the European names into Chinese, using phonetics, can lead to a series of misunderstandings in meaning. The character image often communicates content related to the nature, sensitivity, desires and person’s personality. This has been shown on the example of Roman Malek (马雷凯 Mǎ Léikǎi) and Dariusz Klejnowski-Różycki (柯达 理 Kē Dálǐ).

Opis:
This study deals the use of personal names among Slovakia Hungarians. The bilingual environment of Slovakia Hungarians affects their use of personal names. Bilingual persons can choose names from a larger set of names. Choosing a variant of a personal name from one language or the other can depend on several factors: the communicative domain, the communication partners, the social or linguistic context etc. The dimensions of time, space and society play an important role in the change anddiversity of personal names. A Hungarian dominant use of names characterizes Slovakia Hungarians in the informal domains, and Slovak dominant use in the formal domains. A dual use of names or bi-naming can characterize a dual identity, however, most people employ this as a pre-emptive strategy trying to avoid a possible language or communication problem by using the form conforming with the majority norm in a majority language context and the form conforming with the minority norm in a minority language or informal context. Personal names have an identity marking function, and can indicate the language affiliation and nationality of their bearer.

While the subject of Yoruba names has been significantly explored by previous studies, this paper discusses extensively the nature of such names from an ethnopragmatic framework, with the aim of explicating how Yoruba names are formed, their various cultural contexts as well as the significant functions they play in the Yoruba ethnolinguistic ecology. It identifies and categorizes personal names based on contexts such as family situation, circumstantces of birth, religious orientation, death situation and profession. This paper reinforces that names are not just arbitrary labels, but most notably, linguistic categories – lexical, phrasal or sentential – that have indexical relationship to sociocultural meanings and functions, places, time, people, and events.

Opis:
The study focused on possessive adjectives derived by means of the suffixes -ow(y), -in, -sk- formed from proper personal names in old and contemporary translations of the New Testament. Adjectival derivatives have been excerpted from 15 full and 6 incomplete translations of the New Testament, which date back to the 16th, 17th and 20th century. These translations differ in methods of translation (loose and word-for-word; philological, interlinear, ecumenical, dynamic and artistic) and its basis (Greek original or Latin Vulgate). The comparative analysis of old and contemporary translations shows that possessive adjectives, though used frequently in former times, are now going out of use and the substantival genitival attribute is taking their place. This phenomenon is reflected in processes linked with the development of the Polish language. Moreover, tracking the use of the type of adjectives analysed can be used to distinguish various methods of translation. The use of possessive adjectives in contemporary texts suggests respect for the tradition of translation, whereas the failure to use them – the modernization of Polish.

This paper offers corrections and new readings to names found in eleven inscriptions originating from Faras. Inscriptions were discovered at different periods, ranging from the visit of Karl Richard Lepsius in 1844 to the rescue excavation by the Polish archaeological mission of Kazimierz Michałowski in 1961–1964. The material covers different types of sources (epitaphs, visitors’ inscriptions, subscriptions, and an owner’s inscription) in three languages (Greek, Coptic, and Old Nubian) and spans roughly the whole Christian period in Nubia, from the seventh to the fourteenth or even fifteenth centuries. The corrections include both ‘cosmetic’ improvements in reading (e.g. from the form ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲉ to ⲁⲛⲁⲛⲏ) as well as identification of ghost-names (e.g. the highly unusual name Theoria, which is in fact a misreading of Theophil).

Aim. The aim of this study is to analyse how personal names are transcribed in the written works of Latvian as foreign language learners, as well as the most typical mistakes when transcribing personal names in other languages, the attitude of students towards the Latvianisation of their personal names, and the experience of Latvian language teachers in teaching the principles of transcribing personal names. Methods. The study uses the corpus analysis method, as well as a survey of students and  survey of teachers who teach Latvian as a foreign language. The article includes error analysis of the personal name transcription established in the corpus and the analysis of the survey results. Results and conclusion. It was found out that students mostly know how to transcribe their names in Latvian; less frequently do they know how their surname should be transcribed. Their attitude towards Latvianisation of personal names is various: positive, negative or neutral. Latvian as a foreign language teachers emphasize the principle of transcription of foreign personal names and the need to provide its justification in the study process. It was concluded that further Latvian language acquisition process needs to be focused more on the problems with transcription of foreign personal names. Originality. This study highlights the aspect which is little researched in the applied linguistics – the issued linked to transcription of foreign personal names in the process of learning the Latvian language. The novelty is related to the use of a new resource (error-tagged learner corpus) data.

The aim of the paper is to present the problem of transmitting cultural-determined personal names in literatury translation. The study focuses on various groups of such lexems: personal names, which were created onthe base of the model: name + patronimicum + surname; diminutive names; meaning names; folkand historical names and personal names of intertextual relationships. The emphasis is put on imagination of the translator and creative individual approach to each lexical element and its function in the text. The very important thing is the perspective of recipients with a different cultural background.

The fourth instalment of the ‘Nubica onomastica miscellanea’ series offers a massive batch of corrections to personal names found in Christian Nubian sources. The anthroponyms discussed in this paper come exclusively from Old Nubian documents discovered at Qasr Ibrim and published by Gerald M. Browne and Giovanni Ruffini. The article includes simple re-readings of anthroponyms on the one hand and more elaborate reinterpretations of whole phrases containing them on the other. Identification with known foreign names and etymologies for many local Nubian names are proposed, greatly contributing to our understanding of medieval Nubian naming practices. Last but not least, many ghost-names are identified and their true meaning is explained.

Opis:
Changes in the fund of given names used in Poland, in their symbolism and motives of choice, are the consequence of changes in the area of spiritual culture (the symbolic one). They are connected with the great changes that occurred from the Middle Ages in the sphere of beliefs, declared values, and prevailing habits in the whole of Europe. The greatest change in the Polish fund of personal names, that concerned the exchange of the repertoire and symbolism of native given names to Christian ones, was associated with the radical conversion of traditional Slavic spiritual culture, under the influence of Christian culture, which spread to Poland in the Middle Ages (10th–15th century) from western Europe. Changes on a lesser scale, during the time of Reformation, were associated with the negative attitude of Protestants towards the cult of saints, contrary to Catholics who supported it. From the end of the 18th century, when Poland lost its independence, there have been noticeable patriotic attempts to partially restore the native, old, Polish given names. From the Middle Ages to modern times, names in use were strongly influenced and enriched by the names of literary protagonists and famous persons from European literary culture. In modern times, the reason for such a departure from religious motivations to secular ones of various kinds, when choosing a baptismal name, may be sought in the progressive secularization of the society in Europe, initiated by some intellectual and social trends of the Age of Enlightenment. In the repertoire of forenames recently given in Poland, their variable popularity is an observed phenomenon. Periodically, new, foreign given names will appear (in connection with the opening to the world) as well as different nicknames. With regards to motivation, aesthetic predilections prevail. Given names of Christian origin still hold a relatively strong position, firmly rooted in the Polish culture. The appearance of surnames, at first common ones, and legally binding from the 19th century onwards, has led to the lack of sole reliance on a given name in the identification and representation of a person. This is a very important change, caused by the development of civilization. Since then, in official relations, this function is performed by the name and the surname.
