We investigated the effect of robot’s utterances using onomatopoeia in collaborative learning. The robot was designed to provide encouragement using onomatopoeia when students are given problems to be solved issued by a learning system. Eight college students used a mathematics learning system with a robot for three weeks and then took exams. The results indicated that the robot using utterances with onomatopoeia could comfort learners more than the robot without onomatopoeia. It suggests that the robot that praises or comforts using onomatopoeia helps learners maintain their motivation in collaborative learning.

In Japanese, onomatopoeia are an important element in expressing feelings and experiences. They are difficult for students of Japanese to acquire, especially the nuances. Herein, we propose an e-learning system to improve the efficiency of teaching the nuances – both explicit and tacit – to non-native speakers of Japanese in three steps. We synthesized a new learning strategy available to students leaning Japanese onomatopoeia using narrative strategies to mimic the learning methods used by native speakers. This was achieved by firstly teaching the formal rules representing the explicit nuances. Secondly, the students created new onomatopoeic words by utilizing those formal rules. Finally, feedback was provided by evaluating the onomatopoeias created through the support system of narrative strategies to provide implicit teaching. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method and the learning system, we conducted an experiment involving two groups of subjects. While Group A got feedback about the appropriateness of their onomatopoeic constructions from the native speakers’ narrative interpretations, Group B just reviewed the database material like in a traditional classroom. Results indicate our e-learning system has a significant effect on the acquisition of a working understanding of onomatopoeia.

The article deals with the ways and aims of the research of the phrases of sound imitating the origin in the Russian language on the comparative basis. From the synchronous linguistic sucha point of view was spread over that the vocabulary of expressive and emotional colouring is of atypical character especially considering the phonetic side. The author tries to attract the reader’s attention to some special features of the functioning of interjections, phrases of sound imitating origin and expressively featured in the areas of the subsystems of phonetics, word-building, syntax, as also in the subsystem of the borrowed phrases, which are usually considered separately. The results of the author’s preliminary research prove that such phrases are rather typical of the Russian language taking into account not only the literary variant of the national language but all the social and territorial divisions.

W artykule przeprowadzono analizę wymagającego środka stylistycznego, jakim jest onomatopeja, w oryginalnym tekście - wierszu Lokomotywa Juliana Tuwima i w jego chorwackim przekładzie. Onomatopeje imitują dźwięki rzeczywistości pozajęzykowej, wykorzystując w tym celu specyfikę warstwy fonicznej danego języka, są zatem uwarunkowane kulturowo. W analizowanym tekście wyjściowym warstwa foniczna w dużej mierze uzupełnia warstwę semantyczną, jednak w przekładzie ta zależność jest wyraźnie ograniczona. Techniki translatorskie, w tym liczne kompensacje, w tłumaczonym wierszu nie oddają w pełni wrażeń akustycznych oryginalnego tekstu.
This article analyzes the onomatopoeias in the poem Locomotive byJulian Tuwim and its translation into Croatian. Onomatopoeia is a figure of speech anda linguistic principle deeply rooted in the phonic layer of language and in its culture. Thesound organization of the text based on this phenomenon creates not only the formal level,but also the semantic level of the poem. Translating process structures of this type requiresnot only knowledge of the phonic features of language systems, but also poetic skills.
Ovaj članak analizira onomatopeju, zahtjevnu stilsku figuru u izvornom tekstu, pjesmi Lokomotiva Juliana Tuwima i u hrvatskom prijevodu. Onomatopeje oponašaju zvukove izvanjezičke stvarnosti koristeći u tu svrhu specifičnost fonične razine određenog jezika, pa su one kulturološki uvjetovane. U analiziranom izvornom tekstu fonična razina uvelike nadopunjuje semantičku, međutim u prijevodu je taj odnos ograničen. Prijevodne tehnike, uključujući brojne kompenzacije, u prevedenoj pjesmi ne odražavaju u potpunosti akustične dojmove izvornog teksta.

The article presents the linguistic games in selected poems by Małgorzata Strzałkowska. The subject of the research were 300 works from ten volumes that have been published over the last twenty-five years. The text examines these verbal games, which are mainly based on the sound layer of the utterance, i.e. sounds / sounds, onomatopoeia, rhymes, and rhythm. It was found that Strzałkowska’s poems can be ready-made lesson plans that can be used in Polish lessons, in phonetics, in voice emission as well as during speech diagnosis or therapy.

Opis:
The aim of this work is to present a pilot study investigating the distribution of phono-iconic phenomena in interactions between learners of English. The study was based on Vienna-Oxford International Corpus of English (VOICE) that contains transcripts of conversations between advanced and experienced non-native users of English. The description of material for analysis and methods of study was preceded by a short theoretical introduction to a range of directions of research concerning vocal behaviour in language with special reference to onomatopoeia. The article also provides brief and essential information on VOICE.

The article is dedicated to an analysis of lexis related to the representation of the sounds of birds in a text that might be treated as an original implementation of principles of the popular science discourse. The author of the book builds an independently peculiar discourse community acting as the host a polyphonic message. Referring to his own experience base, built on his wide reading in the field of ornithology and bird watching, he describes, in the form of a report, and in the poetics of a feature article and a diary, his own fascination with the world of birds. He treats the knowledge constituting the cognitive background of the utterance as a value that he wants to share with interested readers. Describing the sounds of birds the author uses conventional lexical measures,i.e. nominal or verbal names of sounds and onomatopoeic exclamations imitating the sounds of birds. The originality of the message is gained not by morphological invention, but due to references to artistic style, colorfulness, and the suggestiveness of originally selected epithets, comparisons, and figurative expressions

Opis:
The article oers an insight into the importance of frames and their features to convey the meaning of Japanese onomatopoeia in the translation process. Based on the present scientic and practical research of the novel by Haruki Murakami Wind-up Bird Chronicles and its translation by Jay Rubin, there have been counted frequencies of use along with clarication of the semantic and stylistic peculiarities of onomatopoeia. Frame analysis, which is used to convey the meaning of Japanese onomatopoeia in the context of the English translation, enables to identify the main characteristics of Japanese syntax, especially the use of particles. Since there is no grammar case in Japanese, onomatopoeic verbs are determined by particles, and predicate plays the main role in the sentence structure. In this case, particles may form additional grammar cases. To visualize his inner world, Haruki Murakami uses onomatopoeias that convey emotions and feelings of the protagonist, as well as the descriptions of peculiar features and sounds of nature. It is the presence of mimetics that enables Murakami to create a complex frame net that intertwines the main storylines through the permanent repeating of some onomatopoeia.

The article presents an analysis of the acoustic features of birdsong particular to the Bubo bubo and Carduelis spinus species and a comparison of those features and lexicalized Polish onomatopoeic phrases. Measurements applied in the investigation are the formant structure, RMS and pitch contour. The study focuses on the transient state of signal in order to verify the appropriateness of initial segments within conventional Polish onomatopoeic phrases. The hypothesis of similar frequencies reflected by the vocalic segments within the frame of oneunit is verified by means of spectrographic pictures. Some examples of Hungarian onomatopoeic phrases are given in the comparative perspective.

The article provides is a comparison of the names of human and animal sounds, which belong to a larger collection of vocabulary that defines the world of auditory perceptions. The historical, grammatic and semantic regularities are identical to them. Differences are noticed in detailed meanings and in the pragmatic of these names, which includes among other things, a much higher incidence of the names of human sounds. Linguistic relativism is more closely covered by the names of animal sounds. The widespread use of animal names for sounds in relation to humans is accompanied by regular negative value and the expression of contempt against the person designated as sound performer.
Статья посвящена сравнению названий звуков, которые производят люди и животные. Такие слова принадлежат к большему набору лексики, определяющей мир слуховых восприятий. Исторические, грамматические и семантические закономерности для них одинаковы. Различия заметны в семантических деталях и прагматике этих названий, что касается, в частности, гораздо большей частоты использования названий человеческих звуков. Лингвистическая относительность в большей степени охватывает названия звуков животных. Широкое использование названий звуков животных по отношению к людям сопровождается регулярными негативными оценками и выражением презрения к человеку, указанному в качестве исполнителя звукового акта.

Język polski i angielski różnią się pod względem najczęściej stosowanych fonicznych środków stylistycznych, jak również związanego z powyższym stopnia ekspresywności. Jednym z czynników kształtujących odmienne tradycje stylistyczne są systemy fonemiczne danych języków. Do najistotniejszych różnic fonologicznych między polskim a angielskim zaliczyć można odmienny stosunek samogłosek do spółgłosek oraz reguły fonotaktyczne (zbitki spółgłoskowe, status geminat). Pod względem stylistycznym język polski i angielski charakteryzują się również odmiennością typologiczną oraz częstotliwością zastosowania aliteracji, która wpływa nie tylko na poziom foniczny, ale także znaczeniowy tekstu. W języku angielskim często stosowana jest aliteracja nagłosowa, podczas gdy w polskim – sufiksalna. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest porównanie tych dwóch systemów fonologicznych oraz – w oparciu o wybrane przykłady (literatura piękna, slogany reklamowe, teksty piosenek) – przedstawienie konsekwencji tych różnic, w tym wyzwań, jakie stoją przed tłumaczem. Foniczne środki stylistyczne są szczególnie trudne z perspektywy translatorycznej, zmuszając tłumacza do wyboru między zachowaniem formy i treści lub też do zastosowania innego środka stylistycznego (np. wykorzystania potencjału polskich zbitek spółgłoskowych, bądź użycia aliteracji w innym miejscu tekstu).
Polish and English differ with respect to typical phonic stylistic devices, as well as the resulting degree of their expressiveness. Among the factors influencing distinct stylistic traditions are the phonemic systems of the two languages. The most significant phonological contrasts between Polish and English comprise a vowel-consonant ratio and phonotactic patterns (different consonantal clusters and the status of geminates). Stylistically, Polish and English differ also with regard to the type and frequency of occurrence of alliteration, a stylistic device that is significant not only from the phonetic, but also from the semantic perspective. In English, alliterative devices are used in the onset, while in Polish – in the coda. The aim of the article is to compare the two systems and, with the use of selected examples (comprising poetry, advertising slogans and song lyrics), to show the consequences of such differences and challenges posed to the translator. Phonetic stylistic devices are particularly problematic in the process of translation, frequently forcing the translator to choose between the form and the meaning or to compensate for the loss with the use of a different stylistic device (e.g. Polish complex consonantal clusters or the use of alliteration in different positions compared with the original).

Zagadnienie zostało zaprezentowane na tle słowiańskim i w kontekście polszczyzny ogólnej, z uwzględnieniem polszczyzny historycznej (zwłaszcza doby staro- i średniopolskiej). Przytoczone przykłady opowiadają się za tezą o więzi między budową głoskową wyrazu a jego znaczeniem. Zwraca się uwagę na istotną w wypadku onomatopei opozycję u–i (samogłoskom tylnym: u, o, a odpowiada wyobrażenie dużych przedmiotów, a samogłoskom przednim: i, y, e – wyobrażenie małych obiektów). Ważny wydaje się sam fakt odnotowania interesującego zbioru „ptasich” onomatopei, gdyż w polskiej literaturze omawianej tematyce poświęca się stosunkowo niewiele miejsca (przeważają publikacje obcojęzyczne).
This paper is a study dedicated to onomatopoeic verbs in the Silesian dialect, and specifically, lexemes describing bird sounds and behaviours. The subject has been discussed compared to Slavic languages and in the context of the common Polish language, as well as taking into consideration historical Polish (in particular that in the Old- and Middle Polish era). The provided examples support the thesis that there exists a link between the word’s sound formation and its meaning. There is emphasized the opposition between ‘u’ and ‘i’ which is essential in the case of onomatopoeia (back vowels ‘u’, ‘o’ and ‘a’ are used with reference to large objects, while front vowels ‘i’, ‘y’ and ‘e’ – small objects). Noticing an interesting set of ‘bird-type’ onomatopoeia also seems important, since there is relatively little mention of this phenomena in the Polish literature (foreign studies prevail).
