Niniejszy tekst stanowi odpowiedź na polemikę Wojciecha Kędera dotyczącą artykułu o działalności nuncjusza Angela Marii Duriniego w Rzeczypospolitej w latach 1767–1769 („Kwartalnik Historyczny” nr 3 z 2019 r.). Wykazano tu błędy w zarzutach co do podstawy źródłowej oraz interpretacji faktów historycznych, które skierował pod adresem autora artykułu prof. Kęder. W udokumentowany sposób zwraca się uwagę na niesłuszność krytyki opublikowanej w „Studiach Sandomierskich”nr 27 z 2020 r. (s. 393–403). 
The article is a response to a polemic by Wojciech Kęder regarding an article about the activities of nuncio Angel Maria Durini in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the years 1767–1769 (“Kwartalnik Historyczny” No. 3 of 2019). In this article the errors committed by Prof. Kęder are addressed, particularly the allegations regarding the source basis and the interpretation of historical facts. In a documented manner, attention is drawn to the specific errors of the criticism published in “Studia Sandomierskie” 27 (2020), pp. 393–403.

W historiografii przeważa opinia, że oskarżenie książki Stanisława Konarskiego O religii poczciwych ludzi jako zawierającej błędy doktrynalne było przesadą niechętnych autorowi kręgów. Nie potrafiono jednak dotąd opisać następstw denuncjacji złożonej przez nuncjusza Angelo Marię Duriniego w Rzymie, ani też genezy łacińskiej wersji dzieła. Wykorzystane po raz pierwszy źródła archiwalne Kongregacji Doktryny Wiary pozwalają na szczegółowy opis procesu, jaki miał miejsce w Świętym Oficjum. Zlecono tam włoskie i łacińskie tłumaczenie książki, poddano je ocenie rzymskich teologów, zalecono Konarskiemu precyzyjną korektę oraz przygotowanie drugiego poprawionego wydania. Oczyszczono go z wielu zarzutów postawionych mu przez teologów w Polsce, lecz zakwalifikowano książkę do indeksu ksiąg zakazanych, o ile autor nie zgodzi się na jej poprawienie. Decyzja ta pozostała jednak utajniona, ponieważ autor poddał się nakazowi i przygotował drugie poprawione wydanie w języku łacińskim.
The prevailing opinion in historiography is that the accusation of Stanisław Konarski’s book O religii poczciwych ludzi (On the Religion of Honest Men) as containing doctrinal errors was an exaggeration of his enemies. However, it was impossible to describe the consequences of the denunciation made by Nuncio Durini in Rome and to explain the genesis of the Latin version of the book. The archival sources of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, used for the first time, allow for a detailed description of the process that took place in the Holy Office. The Italian and Latin translations of the book were commissioned, Roman theologians reviewed its contents, and Konarski was instructed to make precise corrections and to prepare a second revised edition. He was cleared of many charges made against him by the theologians in Poland, but the book was to be included in the index of prohibited books, should the author persist in his expressions. This decision, however, remained secret as the author complied with the order and prepared a second revised edition in Latin.

Angelo Maria Durini był nuncjuszem w Rzeczypospolitej w latach 1767– 1772. Historycy nieraz zastanawiali się, czy tylko reprezentował stanowisko papieża, czy też wychodził poza jego instrukcje. Postawa Duriniego dyplomaty oraz stosunki z opozycją antykrólewską zdają się sugerować nie tyle przekraczanie kompetencji, co jednostronne podejście do papieskich dyrektyw, którym nieobca była koncepcja kompromisu.
Angelo Maria Durini was papal nuncio in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1767–1772. Historians have asked more than once whether he only represented the position of the pope or whether he exceeded his instructions. The attitude of the diplomat Durini and his relations with the anti-royal opposition seem to suggest not so much overstepping his authority as a one-sided approach to papal directives that were quite familiar with the concept of compromise.

The article presents the history of the apostolic nunciature in Poland throughout history and Polish-Vatican relations. The operation of Vatican diplomacy is also explained, on the basis of diplomatic law and principles, such as the principle of precedence. A list of all apostolic nuncios in Poland from the beginning of diplomatic relations between Poland and the Vatican was also presented. Among the, they were few future Popes. The history of the apostolic nunciature in Poland is little known during the Plish-Swedish wars in the 18th century. At that time, the Apostolic Nunciature in Poland was located in Opava for several years (at that time small city in the Habsburg Empire).

The archbishop of Capua, Antonio Caetani (1566–1624), was an eminent member of a Roman aristocratic family. From 1607 to 1611, he resided at the Imperial court of Prague as Apostolic Nuncio in the service to Pope Paul V, where he witnessed the turmoil that gradually overwhelmed Bohemia, ruled at that point by Emperor Rudolf II of the House of Habsburg. Caetani moved in an orbit characterised by various coexisting political, local, confessional and social forces. His negotiations within the maze of the court were characterised by a wise and cautious approach of not interfering openly in Imperial affairs: a sort of ‘wait-and-see’ policy that was almost inevitable. This was firstly because of the Imperial ministers, who, instead of acting as a conduit to reach the ears of the sovereign, were actually considered obstructive and unhelpful because of their private aims, personal resentments, and often-outright hostility. Secondly, Caetani’s mission was hampered by the Rudolf II's suspicious nature: the Emperor feared papal intrusion in Imperial affairs. The papal nuncios did not merely embody the pope; they were also political subjects within networks of interpersonal relationships. Within these networks, they could practice their diplomatic roles, and also carry out (their own) personal affairs. Below, I will attempt to demonstrate how Caetani’s political strategy failed to establish fruitful relations with the courtiers and the Emperor.

The article presents the hitherto unknown correspondence of the inspector of the general assembly of missionaries Piotr Hiacynt (Jacek) Śliwicki to the papal nuncio in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth – Alberic Archinto, which is now preserved in the Vatican Archive. It includes three letters – two letters of 1754 and one of 1757, which are the evidence of the cooperation between the Church dignitaries. In the first letter Śliwicki referred to the conflict concerning the tithe, which lasted in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the years 1752–1753. In both letters of 1754 he described to the papal nuncio the situation at the court of the bishop of Poznań Teodor Kazimierz Czartoryski, who was surrounded by Lutherans. In the letter of 1757 Śliwicki characterized the situation of Lazarists in Krasław, requesting some support (including financial help) from the Pope. The article was complemented by the source edition of the above-mentioned correspondence in the original language – French.

W artykule przedstawiono rosyjską ofensywę w gazetach europejskich z początku 1768 r., kiedy to Petersburg, dążąc do wymuszenia na polskim sejmie przyznania specjalnych praw dla innowierców, skierował swoje działania przeciwko nuncjaturze warszawskiej, stawiającej w obronie praw katolików opór tym działaniom. W związku z wycofaniem się carycy Katarzyny II z działań skierowanych przeciwko nuncjaturze całą akcję rozpoczętą w marcu 1768 r. szybko zakończono.
This article presents the Russian operation in European newspapers from the beginning of 1768 when St. Petersburg, seeking to force the Polish Sejm to grant special rights for religious dissidents, directed his actions against the Warsaw nunciature, which resisted these actions in defense of the rights of Catholics. Due to the withdrawal of Tsarina Catherine II from her actions against the nunciature, the whole action, which began in March 1768, was quickly terminated.

Niniejszy artykuł recenzyjny stanowi polemikę metodologiczną z tezami artykułu P. Zająca o działalności nuncjusza Angela Marii Duriniego w Rzeczypospolitej w latach 1767–1769 („Kwartalnik Historyczny” nr 3 z 2019 r.). Wbrew opinii P. Zająca, który swoje dociekania oparł na wąskiej bazie źródłowej obejmującej tylko korespondencję Duriniego z Rzymem, nuncjusz nie podchodził „jednostronnie do dyrektyw papieskich”, będąc niechętnym kompromisowi, lecz zgodnie z zaleceniami Stolicy Apostolskiej energicznie zabiegał o interesy Kościoła katolickiego i wiernych w Rzeczypospolitej.
This article is a review of the methodological polemic in the theses of the article by P. Zając regarding the activities of nuncio Angelo Maria Durini in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the years 1767-1769 (“Kwartalnik Historyczny” nr 3, 2019). Contrary to the opinion of P. Zając, who based his inquiries on a narrow source base covering only Durini’s correspondence with Rome, the nuncio did not approach “unilaterally from papal directives”, reluctant to compromise, but according to the instructions of the Holy See, vigorously pursued the interests of the Catholic Church and the faithful in the Republic.

W Kościele rzymskokatolickim władza sądownicza stanowi część władzy rządzenia, która zgodnie z kan. 135 KPK dzieli się na władzę ustawodawczą, wykonawczą i sądowniczą. Funkcja sądownicza zawiera się w sądzeniu, czyli w deklarowaniu i aplikowaniu prawa do pojedynczych sytuacji spornych. Władza ta przypisana jest jako własna papieżowi oraz biskupom, natomiast codziennie i praktycznie jest ona wykonywana w Kościele na sposób zastępczy przez osoby i struktury ustanowione na sposób stały do jej sprawowania, czyli przez Trybunały Apostolskie oraz trybunały biskupie. Jednym z takich trybunałów jest Trybunał Roty Nuncjatury Apostolskiej w Hiszpanii zwany Trybunałem Roty w Madrycie lub najczęściej nazywany po prostu Rotą Hiszpańską. Jest to trybunał zasadniczo apelacyjny i został utworzony na mocy przywileju Stolicy Apostolskiej w XVI w. Przedmiotem artykułu jest komentarz do wyroku, w którym kluczowe jest zagadnienie podwójnego rozpatrywania tej samej sprawy.

Zwrócenie uwagi na ceremonialne aspekty nowożytnej praktyki dyplomatycznej jest jednym z głównych postulatów współczesnych historyków dyplomacji. Prezentowany artykuł dotyczy okoliczności politycznych i przejawów ceremonialnych udziału nuncjusza apostolskiego Galeazza Marescottiego w audiencji publicznej na sejmie elekcyjnym 1669 r., w wyniku którego wybrany został na króla Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki. Omówione zostają źródła informacji Stolicy Apostolskiej na temat praktyki politycznej i ceremoniału Rzeczypospolitej w okresie bezkrólewia i elekcji, szczególnie w kontekście nastania w 1668 r., w wyniku abdykacji Jana Kazimierza Wazy, niechcianego przez Rzym nowego bezkrólewia. Zaangażowanie dyplomatyczne papiestwa w obliczu nowej elekcji utrudniały wówczas chłodne relacje nuncjusza z ambitnym prymasem Mikołajem Prażmowskim. Artykuł porusza problem przygotowań do audiencji nuncjusza ze strony obradującego od początku maja 1669 r. sejmu elekcyjnego, demonstrując drugoplanowość tego wydarzenia dla życia politycznego Rzeczypospolitej. Przedstawiony zostaje następnie wjazd dyplomaty na pole elekcyjne oraz szczegółowy przebieg audiencji, której punkt kulminacyjny stanowiło przekazanie papieskich brewiów oraz oracja nuncjusza. Analizie poddano ponadto szlachecką recepcję posłuchania Marescottiego. W artykule podjęto problematykę politycznych, dyplomatycznych oraz widowiskowych funkcji audiencji dyplomatycznej. Posłuchanie przedstawiciela Stolicy Apostolskiej na sejmie elekcyjnym zaprezentowano jako wyraz obopólnej przynależności stron (papiestwa i Rzeczypospolitej) do europejskiego porządku politycznego XVII w.
Paying attention to the ceremonial aspects of the early modern diplomatic practice is one of the main postulates of the historians of diplomacy. The presented article focuses on the political circumstances and ceremonial manifestations of the participation of the apostolic nuncio Galeazzo Marescotti in a public audience at the election sejm of 1669, as a result of which Michał Korybut Wiśniowiecki was elected king. The Holy See’s informational policy regarding the political practice and ceremonial of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the interregnum and the election period is discussed, especially in the emergence of a new interregnum in 1668, as a result of the abdication of John II Casimir Vasa. The papacy’s diplomatic involvement towards the new election was at that time hampered by the cold relations between the nuncio and the ambitious primate of the Kingdom Mikołaj Prażmowski. The article also deals with the preparations for the nuncio’s audience at the election sejm that took place from the beginning of May 1669, demonstrating the secondary nature of this event for the political life of the Commonwealth. Then, the diplomat’s entry into the election field is presented, as is the detailed course of the audience, which culminated in the consigning of papal letters and the nuncio’s oration. The noble reception of Marescotti’s audience is also analysed. The article deals with the issues of political, diplomatic, and visual functions of the diplomatic audience. The hearing of the representative of the Holy See at the elective sejm is presented as an expression of the mutual belonging of the parties (the papacy and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth) to the seventeenth-century European political order.

This paper focuses on the cultural and political importance of papal nuncios’ final reports (relazioni finali) as one of the basic sources of knowledge about the PolishLithuanian Commonwealth in the Roman Curia. The final report was a document, in essence a summary, which a diplomat was required to complete at the end of his mission (or immediately after). During the creation of the office of permanent nuncio to the major European courts, the preparation and delivery of the final report often took place orally. Gradually, the relazione evolved into a written version. Throughout the sixteenth century, when knowledge about Poland-Lithuania in Rome was rather poor, the relazioni finali consisted of colourful descriptions of the geography, the history, and the social and political relations of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. During the seventeenth century, this document became more political in character. It related directly to the activities of the papal diplomats, rituals and ceremonials, and any particular problems regarding the missions, rather than extensive descriptions of relatively banal curiosities. Throughout the seventeenth century in particular, when a permanent papal diplomatic presence had just been established in Poland-Lithuania, the final reports were an important contribution to future missions. Newly-appointed nuncios therefore willingly used the extremely important information contained therein. The practice of writing relazioni finali made it easier for the Holy See to consolidate its diplomatic influence and presence in Central and Eastern Europe in the early modern period. It also fostered papal interest in the social and political features of the enormous ‘noble’ republic.
