Opis:
World literatures today often impose a separation of narratives from their geographic and linguistic origins. Translated versions of literary texts that were created and received within local cultural contexts, when translated, enter new, foreign contexts. When translations into many other languages appear, a writer may expect many diverse valuations of one`s work. Literary texts in translation, in fact, are an inseparable from literary experiences for many readers and the study of translated texts has a long-standing tradition. The future of such texts may also lie in the emerging future reading - “distant reading” to quote Walkowitz` use of Moretti`s term. Among the strongest arguments in support of such reading is the possibility, through translated texts, to establish a more aesthetic distance towards the object of a fictional text in translation. Translation gives us as readers a new and different approach towards objects we fail to notice because of their familiarity. Nature scenes and objects may be included among such features of the narrative that could be more aesthetically appreciated in the translated versions. The paper compares translations of nature scenes and objects of Shin Kyung-Sook`s novel into English Please Look After Mom (2011) and into Lithuanian Prašau, pasirūpink mama (2019). The paper reveals the scope of translation strategies of domestication and foreignization through comparison of translation of nature scenes and items into Lithuanian and English.

Opis:
The Decameron 2020 started in Croatia as an online literary event in the time of the first quarantine caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and resulted in an e-book of fifty-two selected short stories. Its initiators and editors, Ana Cerovac, Vesna Kurilić and Antonija Mežnarić, recognized the peculiarity of the experience of living in the end times, as well as the potential for comparison of the e-book with Boccaccio’s classic, and set up an online space where authors from Croatia and the region could ( re )create or transform their experiences, or reflect upon them. This paper focuses on four stories from the collection in which nature is givenspecial significance: Algernonova osveta (Algernon’s Revenge) by Nataša Milić, Zaražena (Infected) bySunčica Mamula, Redukcije(Reductions) byAnaKutleša and 2030 byRadmila Rakas. It investigates the range of feelings and attitudes towardsnature in the time of pandemic and quarantine, as reflected in these four stories.

Opis:
The article relates to compounds of happiness with the literature, its purpose is to answer the question: what and why can literature talk about happiness? Different directions in literary studies occupy different positions to the values contained in the literary work. There is also no consensus as to whether it is the bearer of aesthetic func-tion. The author starts from the aesthetic function, which sees the only way to fulfill the value in the literary work to the reflection on the aesthetic value to propose a theoretical model of happiness in the literature. This model is based on the structural aesthetic by Jan Mukařovský, whose works are its theoretical foundations. In this connec-tion the two modes for its practice: evoking and showing, that explains an example of ‘Szczęśliwe drogi’ by K. K. Baczyński. Consideration sends attention to the impact on the valuation of happiness evoking literary work.

The article is an analysis of the eight criteria for truth in a work of art, as put forward by R. Ingarden in his phenomenological aesthetics. It is an attempt at a return to Polish philosophical theory on current postmodern literature. V. Pelevin's novel Buddha's little finger was chosen to demonstrate the return to rationalist and realist traditions in literary criticism, which is currently under the strong influence of postmodern discourse.

Opis:
In this paper the most important works of Russian-Soviet literary utopia and dystopia have been analysed to investigate the role of nature. In literary utopias, people and their needs are the measure of all things, and the image of a utopian future is the vision of a nature so subdued that the need to eat and sleep have been subdued as well. Yet authors, such as Chayanov, emphasise the importance of a coexistence with nature. Dystopian authors ( Platonov and Zamyatin ) see the meaning of nature symbolically. They see nature not only as an unconquerable force, but also as a force entirely impermissible to defeat and that should not be defeated: for Platonov and Zamyatin nature is the eternal source of all that is to come.

According to Spengler the experience of modernity is marked by the struggle of organic nature against inorganic minerality, and of blood’s supremacy against money’s abstraction. The city is the matterly and symbolic place of this era, where inorganic economy wins over cosmic order, and avant-garde over traditions. Trees disappear as physical presence and as metaphysical symbol of transcendence. According to Deleuze literature offer the signs of a plant imagery made of trees, leaves, flowers, musk, rhizomes, grass and algae. The book can be like a tree, the image of an organic order, or Whitman’s grass growing in any place, or the inorganic rhizomatic structure of Joyce and Proust’s chaos, fragmentation and decomposition. Opis:
Caucasian exile literature of the 19th century accumulates records of various ways of experiencing freedom in spite of physical enslavement. An objective, external form of manifesting freedom, often taking on a community character, was conducting a political „apostolic” mission consisting in preaching the idea of freedom; conducting research and scientific work, maintaining ties with national literature, reading individual or aloud in group of exiles. No less important, however, was „touching” freedom in an individual, subjective interior: by releasing unlimited spaces of imagination and launching the creative processes of the creative „I”; thanks to dreams and memory; in love, and finally in contact with nature, which was for romantics a gateway to transcendence. The essence of these poetic visions of „liberation” is in fact the projection of a return to the Paradise.

ORPHEUS IN THE UNDERWORLD IMAGE (Unfinished Sketch) Orpheus in the Underworld image addresses the issue of knowledge in the arts, especially the rarely recognized difference between the directness of sensations that seem natural and spontaneous, and its construction, which manifests itself in formalized, anterior analysis, which preceded experience. Więckowski considers that ages-old problem in the context of the myth of Orpheus’ descent into Hades and his (Orpheus’); the myth, which was often used in visual arts, music and literature. Więckowski analyzes painting as object and the way to learn through art. As the basis for his analysis, he uses a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke, in which Eurydice, called from hell by the means of poetry, reaches the limits of existence, but due to Orpheus’ mistake, does not cross the threshold of reality. What error did Orpheus make? What lies beneath the mythical gesture: his looking back and looking at Euridice? The answers to these questions are the subject of the essay.

The study of Mauritian Literature and the environment from an interdisciplinary perspective arouses various concerns and questionings such as the protection of planet Earth, the relation between characterisation and natural settings, the nature-culture dichotomy and nature writing. The fictionalisation and poeticization of Mauritian and Indian Ocean islands’ natural spaces in Loys Masson’s novels depict both man as Nature’s saviour and Nature as man’s saviour, in such a way that Nature’s raison d’être becomes Literature and aesthetics. Nature exists because it will eventually turn into a Book. Born at the end of the 20th century in American universities and closely linked to geocriticism and ecopoetics, ecocriticism thus provides new insights into Masson’s novels while reviving traditional French philosophical thoughts by Jean-Jacques Rousseau or Michel Serres.

EYE AND WORD (Fictional Visions in Social Memory) There is no library in Plato’s cave. His dialogues were narrated before books got printed and contemporary information caves filled with mass media and social media do not need books sending googling masses to clouds, not libraries. What matters more – a letter, which is the building brick of words, sentences and novels or a pixel which is a building brick of the deluge of images, a drop in the ocean of an iconic overkill? In aesthetics of photography the question is whether a meaning of a photograph depends more on an iconic and often subconscious impact or on a rational interpretation in the light of what we know having read the caption and the explanation of the context. Visions of contemporary world are best deciphered from an unfinished novel by David Foster Wallace, whose epic story of the Internal Revenue Service chapter in Peoria, Illinois, entitled The Pale King shows us the world of hyperactive consumers, addicted to news, speed, travel, alcohol, drugs, sex and entertainment. For them, boredom of a perfectly boring work – like the one performed for the tax office of the US – is a perfect serum restoring them to a meaningful life and full humanity. Boredom as salvation, here is the vision of a novelist, who also claimed, in his last public lecture, that real education can save our souls both from boredom and from hyper consumption. Pixels are a legion, but words matter and meanings can be found.

Literature provides a great deal of material for more general observations regarding the as- sessment of law and its role in public awareness. Literary works act as a mirror in which we can see the dangers of breaking the link between law and morality. An excellent example is William Golding’s novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’. His parabolic story about human nature provides a reflection on the role and nature of law in society. The task of defining the essence of law and its role in society has captured the minds of legal theorists, philosophers, and sociolo- gists for centuries. This paper includes a brief analysis of two basic concepts of the nature of law, i.e. natural law and legal positivism. It is an attempt to show that theoretical beliefs about the essence of law have a direct impact on the practice of making and applying laws. The pluralism of values is used by various social groups or the ruling political elite to achieve their own goals. They value individual civil liberties, giving primacy to values that safeguard their interests. This often happens at the expense of other groups whose freedoms are being limited. Importantly, such mechanisms of assigning value are used in both undemocratic and democratic systems.

This article presents a new approach to the interpretation of Juliusz Słowacki's Genesis from the Spirit (1844) from the perspective of the groundbreaking philosophical discourse of modernity. What it actually suggests is that the mystical Form of Słowacki's cosmic vision, believed to be an emanation of the Absolute or a vestige of Creation, has a historical and materialist core. This claim is based on a series of comparisons with passages from Hegel and the premises of the philosophy of Friedrich Schlegel. By following closely the spontaneous movement of inner tensions in Słowacki's poetic discourse this study demonstrates that it is driven his own philosophical project and less so by the discourse of mysticism.
