The Latin American Homo Sexualis of High Modernity. Jaime Bayly’s Narrative Fiction Jaime Bayly is one of the most controversial Hispanic-American writers of recent times. Both his provocative media image and his writings - which supposedly reffer to his personal experience - focus on gay themes. The aim of the present article is to show, by way of the work of literary scholars who engage in queer theory and sociologists who examine questions of sexuality, how certain changes in the sexual dimension of human life typical of societies of so-called high modernity (although with marked influences from Latin American culture), are reflected in th Peruvian’s writings. Situating Bayly’s novels in a broader literary and social context, the article attempts to shed light on the cultural construction of gender and sexuality. Key words: (homo)sexuality, hypermasculinity, hegemony, identity.

This article comprises an inventory of the motif of death within the narrative syntax of several Colombian narco novels. “Sicaresca” novels by Fernando Vallejo, Jorge Franco and Arturo Alape will be discussed. The construct of the characters, young contract killers, whose violent and premature deaths are seen as their fate, will be shown to display an indisputably “Thanatotic” facet. In the second part of this article, the ritual dimension of death, presented in the novels “Comandante Paraíso” by Gustavo Álvarez Gardeazábal and “Leopardo al sol” by Laura Restrepo, will be analysed. The last part will be dedicated to the iconic and symbolic dimension of Pablo Escobar’s death depicted in “El ruido de las cosas al caer” by Juan Gabriel Vásquez and “Happy birthday, capo” by José Libardo Porras.
Niniejszy artykuł stanowi swoisty przegląd zastosowań motywu śmierci w narracyjnej gramatyce wybranych kolumbijskich narkopowieści. Zostały tu omówione powieści należące do kategorii novela sicaresca (powieści Fernando Vallejo, Jorge Franco, Arturo Alape), niewątpliwie „tanatyczne” w sposobie ukształtowania postaci nastoletnich płatnych morderców, w których życiu gwałtowna, przedwczesna śmierć wydaje się nieuniknionym przeznaczeniem. W drugiej części tekstu został omówiony rytualny wymiar śmierci przedstawiony w powieściach Comandante Paraíso Gustava Álvareza Gardeazábala oraz Leopardo al sol („Lampart w słońcu”) Laura Restrepo. Ostatnia część artykułu jest poświęcona ikonicznemu i symbolicznemu wymiarowi literackich reprezentacji śmierci Pabla Escobara w El ruido de las cosas al caer („Hałas spadających rzeczy”) Juana Gabriela Vásqueza i Happy Birthday, capo José Libardo Porrasa.

En el artículo se confrontan dos novelas, una polaca, "Sońka" de Ignacy Karpowicz, y una española, "Soldados de Salamina" de Javier Cercas, que pertenecen a la corriente de la así llamada narrativa de la memoria. Tanto en Polonia como en España, hay una tercera generación de escritores que se enfrenta a las experiencias traumáticas que afectaron a una generación entera en el siglo XX y que persisten en la memoria tanto individual como colectiva de sus descendientes. Aunque las circunstancias históricas a las que se refieren estas obras son muy diferentes, se pueden encontrar ciertos paralelismos: en ambos casos las naciones experimentaron conflictos bélicos sangrientos seguidos de varias décadas de sistema autoritario. El análisis se realiza a la luz de premisas teóricas formuladas por Birgit Neumann acerca de las características de la prosa de la memoria que esta investigadora considera universales. El estudio comparativo de las dos novelas permite observar que, aunque se pueden señalar rasgos comunes de carácter general, las soluciones elegidas por los escritores difieren considerablemente. Las diferencias se observan en el modelo narrativo, en las técnicas que cuestionan la veracidad del relato y también cuando los novelistas introducen varios planos temporales.

The objective of this paper is to reflect on some features of David Toscana’s novel Los puentes de Königsberg. In this contribution by the Northern Mexican writer there are unusual parallelisms between different realities of the cities of Monterrey (Mexico) and Königsberg (East Prussia), which become the basis of the structure of the novel. In this framework the author situates certain eccentric characters, providing them with a “double life”, a real Mexican one and an imaginary East-Prussian one, in order to contrast the cities and validate the superiority of Königsberg, the actual protagonist of the novel. Toscana uses selected criteria, such as scientific and cultural contributions by the cities, their different historical fates, and the moral attitudes of their inhabitants towards discrimination, war crimes and gender violence, which implies a severe critique of Monterrey’s society. The set of parallelisms between the cities is totally convincing as a fictional structure and emphasizes the most prominent quality of Toscana’s analysed prose.

Research objectives (aims) and problem(s): This manuscript investigates the reproduction of the classic figure of the mentor/educator and how, in recent times, it has transformed into the archetype of the circumstantial father in video games. Research methods and structure of the article: Through the discourse analysis of the narrative of four popular video games: God of War, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite and The Walking Dead, we propose: identify the plot conflicts derived from the fact that the character is a father circumstantial and discern the identifying features of this pseudo-father figure from the structural patterns of the monomyth or hero's journey and relate its characteristics with those of the classic figure of the mentor/educator. Brief description of the context of the problem: Do video games show educational models in their stories? The characters in the audiovisual narrative are a representation of the particular and universal dimension of the environment and the social context of their time. This conception of multicultural humanity allows us to understand the potential of the narrative elements that are developed in different stories and stories, such as archetypes or tropes. In the video game industry in particular, the advances in animation techniques and the community's interest in social and human issues have meant greater depth in the construction of characters and the inclusion of figures away from conventional patterns. Research findings and their impact on the development of educational sciences: The findings allow us to conclude that there is a trend towards replacing the classic archetype of the mentor with the figure of the circumstantial father. Conclusions and/or recommendations: This new character moves away from the classic pattern of Joseph Campbell's hero's journey and is more similar to the characteristics of contemporary antiheroic characters. However, this new archetype bases its teaching on resilience and sacrifice, a relevant fact as it is a figure designed to educate and instill values in young people.   Objetivos (fines) y problema(s) de la investigación: Este manuscrito investiga la reproducción de la clásica figura del mentor/educador y cómo, en los últimos tiempos, se transforma en el arquetipo del padre circunstancial en los videojuegos. Métodos de investigación y estructura del artículo: Mediante el análisis del discurso de la narrativa de cuatro populares videojuegos: God of War, The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite y The Walking Dead, se plantea identificar los conflictos de la trama derivados del hecho de que el personaje sea un padre circunstancial y discernir los rasgos identificativos de esta figura seudopaterna a partir de los patrones estructurales del monomito o viaje del héroe y relacionar sus características con las de la clásica figura del mentor/educador. Problema de la investigación: ¿Los videojuegos muestran modelos educativos en sus historias? Los personajes en la narrativa audiovisual son una representación de la dimensión particular y universal del entorno y contexto social de su tiempo. Esta concepción de la humanidad multicultural nos permite entender el potencial de los elementos narrativos que se desarrollan en las diferentes historias y relatos, como los arquetipos o los tropos. En la industria de los videojuegos en particular, los avances de las técnicas de animación y el interés de la comunidad por temas sociales y humanos, han supuesto una mayor profundidad en la construcción de los personajes y la inclusión de figuras alejadas de los patrones convencionales. Resultados de la investigación y su impacto en el desarrollo de las ciencias de la educación: Los hallazgos permiten reflexionar sobre la posible existencia de una tendencia hacia la sustitución del arquetipo clásico del mentor por la figura del padre circunstancial. Conclusiones y/o recomendaciones: Este nuevo personaje se aleja del patrón clásico del viaje del héroe de Joseph Campbell y se asemeja más a las características propias de los personajes antiheroicos contemporáneos. Finalmente, este nuevo arquetipo basa su enseñanza en la resiliencia y el sacrificio, un dato relevante en tanto que se trata de una figura destinada a educar e inculcar valores en los jóvenes.

The fantastic is one of the elements in the narrative poetics of Joan Barceló, a seminal Catalan writer of the 70s. The purpose of this article is to analyse the fantastic from a theoretical perspective, including its specific uses in Barceló’s stories and novels, how it works and why. Thus, the paper draws on the concept of the neofantastic to reveal a literary space of aesthetic and ideological transgression that moves among three thresholds: the magical or fairy, the unusual and the absurd or nonsense.

For the last two decades, especially since the 2008 economic crisis, there has been a notable increase in literary works exploring social, political and economic themes in Spain. The growing number of “crisis novels” has reignited the debate about the political role of literature and its ability to challenge and modify existing social models. This article seeks to highlight the female perspective within this discussion.The aim of my analysis of the five novels written by contemporary Spanish female authors (Belén Gopegui, Cristina Fallarás, Cristina Morales, Elvira Navarro and Marta Sanz) and published between 2007 and 2018 is to expose the distinctive female experience as represented in the literature, where it often turns into undermining the system. If women’s literary practice takes the form of political intervention, it is not just because of the collapse of the fundamental trust in the state and its institutions, but mainly due to the shifts in the distribution of the sensible, as we tend to understand the politics of literature after Jacques Rancière.

The article analyzes the image of Buenos Aires in the narrative of Ana María Shua, an Argentine writer of Polish Jewish descent. Urban space plays an important role in her prose described often as apocalyptic or dystopian. Through a historiographical metafiction, the author rewrites the memory of the ancestors in El libro de los recuerdos (2007), a novel that presents the life of Jewish immigrants in the capital of Argentina, divided into neighborhoods marked by their ethnicity. Eroticism and the use of the female body are, on the other hand, the topics that dominate in the author’s collection of micro-stories titled Casa de geishas (2009), where the brothel is described as a singular ghetto, rooted in the city panorama. Finally, the novel La muerte como efecto secundario offers a dystopic description of a future of a ghettoized city, where compulsory geriatric ghettos become a reality. The article, based on the analysis of the aforementioned works, presents a critical look at the use of the concept of “ghetto” or “urban island” in the construction of the narrative structure and space in Ana María Shua’s fiction.

With the start of the new century, and especially during the last decade, many writers are starting to putt he focus on the body and its various problems derived from the current socioeconomic system. One of them is Marta Sanz, for whom, in her own words, writing consists of “naming the body” and, thanks to that, “conquering the territory”. His discourse is frontally opposed to the discourse of postmodernity and to the models of advanced capitalism, above all and more consciously in his latest novels. What this article aims to show is how and in what way the body and its repolitization constitute one of the central axes of this author’s writing.

The main aim of this article is to analyse the complexity of the subject of memory in the work of Jesus Moncada, as an author from Aragon writing in Catalan and introducing the Spanish Civil War issue in fantastic fiction, namely in Històries de la mà esquerra [Stories of the Left Hand] (1981). Furthermore, the short story that closes the book, “D’uns vells papers de música” [Old Sheet Music], is discussed to illustrate that matter in the context of the conflict between the real and the fantastic, on the one hand, and between history and memory, on the other hand. Thus, in the mentioned narrative fiction collective memory stands as a specter whose condition is noticed by its anachronistic return under grotesque forms, resulting from the horror facing death or the unreal, and from the irony interwoven by the narrator. In doing so Moncada problematizes any attempt to reconstruct historical memory based on literature.

Detective fiction as parodic reformulation of genre’s defining patterns has a long history in the Latin American tradition: Borges, Bioy Casares, Soriano, Levrero, Ibargüengoitia, etc. Besides, the evolution of Latin American detective genre has always been characterized by a progressive focalization in the social aspects over the detective story line which has served as a mask to depict in a critical way the flaws of the region’s societies and governments. In nowadays Cuba it could be highlighted the crime narrative of parodic slant by Lorenzo Lunar Cardedo. Among the major features of Lunar Cardedo’s style there are the marginal atmospheres, the stylization of popular speech, the intertextuality, the humor, the parody, and the social criticism. This article focuses on the parodic, intertextual and satiric aspects of his work, particularly discernible in the novel Proyecto en negro (2013), in which the author emphasizes – in opposition to the official discourse – the perpetuation of corrupt, chauvinist, racist, and homophobic behaviors in contemporary Cuba, while relaxing the genre formula limits in order to follow a much more irreverent path within the new Latin American detective fiction.

Ramon Vinyes has been known in the literary world because of his being mentioned in García Márquez’s Cien años de soledad as a fictional character, “the Catalan sage”. In fact, he was a poet, playwright and short story writer, who did create his works in his homeland, as well as in Colombia during his exile years, though always writing in Catalan. Vinyes’s most acknowledged short story is “L’Albí” (The Albino), telling the bizarre aftermath of a monstrous presence in a village of the Catalan hinterland. In the present article, the author analyses the ways in which fantasticity and weirdness are used in the configuration of this mysterious character – which is a meaningful projection of otherness – taking into account the function of ideology and parody in the text. Thus, the study argues about the role played by several allusions to English history and significant gothic motives, showing that these elements, along with fantasticity, ideology and parody, build a singular narrative fiction which is at the cutting edge of its contemporary Catalan literary context.

The earlier Madame de Stael’s essay on relations between litera-ture and society, the Lukács, Goldman, Hauser and Sacarpit’s works on the influence of sociology into fiction, have founded the sociology of literature. In the following pages, we propose the reverse situation: how literature influences society. The XX century Latin American fiction is a good example of which we analyze its different periods.
Desde Madame de Stael y su ensayo precursor de 1800, pasando por Lukács, Goldman, Hauser y Escarpit se ha estudiado la influencia de la sociedad en la literatura. En estas páginas se aventura una propuesta inversa: la literatura tam-bién influye en la sociedad, extremo del que la narrativa latinoamericana del siglo XX es un buen ejemplo que se analiza en sus diferentes períodos: las “novelas de la tie-rra”, las de denuncia social y política, lo real maravilloso y la contemporánea narrati-va basada en la cultura popular.

Autorki artykułu analizują funkcje wtrąceń z języka hiszpańskiego w anglojęzycznej powieści Krótka historia siedmiu zabójstw (2015) autorstwa jamajskiego pisarza Marlona Jamesa. Zasadniczą dyskusję poprzedza część informacyjna, zarysowująca konstrukcję utworu, przebieg akcji, sylwetki bohaterów i kontekst społeczno-polityczny przedstawionych wydarzeń. Z punktu widzenia postaci wplatających zwroty i słowa hiszpańskie, odnotowane są cztery zazębiające się obszary dyskursu, które służą określonym funkcjom. Do najistotniejszych należą tu: funkcja treściowa, w której użycie hiszpańskiego służy charakteryzowaniu niektórych bohaterów świata przedstawionego, funkcja aluzyjna (polegająca na sugerowaniu powiązań politycznych agentów CIA działających na terenie Jamajki) oraz funkcja kreatywna, której celem jest pobudzenie wyobraźni czytelnika. Polifonia powieści Jamesa wraz z jej południowoamerykańską wersją języka hiszpańskiego uwypukla kontekst społeczno-kulturowy utworu, eksponując stylistyczne nacechowanie mowy, stając się jednocześnie sposobem aktywizacji wiedzy pozatekstowej odbiorcy i zachęcenia go do rozszyfrowania inności i obcości.
El artículo examina diversas funciones de uso de español en la novela de Marlon Jones Breve história de siete asesinatos (2014). Están analizadas quatro áreas coincidentes del discurso. Las funciones más importantes del uso de español por los personajes de Marlon Jones son las siguientes: indicar la presencia histórica de los agentes de CIA en Jamaica y América Latina (para crear contenido y referencias), reflexionar sobre la influencia cubana en Florida y las Antillas (crear referencias), representar con exactitud los contactos comerciales entre los cárteles colombianos y los gángsters americanos (función sociológica), y, finalmente, una manera indirecta de caracterizar a Josey Wales, el protagonista de Jamaica, y también al terrorista cubano Doctor Love (función sociológica y de crear del personaje). Además, presencia de l´exico español es el señal estilistico de la habla de los individuos y enriquece la dimensión polifónica de la novela.
The article investigates various functions played by Marlon James’s use of Spanish in his English language novel A Brief History of Seven Killings (2014). Four overlapping areas of discourse are analysed. The findings suggest that the main functions of the use of Spanish by James’s characters are: pointing to the historical presence of CIA agents in Jamaica and Latin America (contentcreating and alluding function), reflecting on Cuban influence in Florida and several Caribbean Island (alluding function), accurate depiction of trade contacts and dealings between Colombian cartels and American gangsters (sociological function), and also an indirect form of characterisation of both Josey Wales, the novel’s Jamaican protagonist, and Cuban terrorist Doctor Love (characterbuilding and sociological function). Additionally, the presence of Spanish lexis exposes stylistic markers of an individual’s speech, adding to the novel’s polyphonic dimension.

The figure of the prostitute occupies a privileged position in contemporary Spanish and Polish literature. Departing from the comparative perspective, especially employing the category of world literature according to David Damrosch, the paper aims to explain the relation between the presence of the prostitute as a character in the literary representation of the transition to democracy. To achieve this, the author conducts an analysis of two novels: Un día volveré by Juan Marsé published in 1982 and Niskie Łąki by Piotr Siemion from 1999. In both texts, the analyzed female characters refer to the disillusionment with the moment of the transition to democracy.

The representation of the disability in the recent Spanish narrative raises several questions: by the role and place that the excluded occupy in the fictitious worlds, by the point of view and the tonality in which they are represented, by the reaction of the other participants of fiction. In the recent novel by Cristina Morales titled “Lectura fácil”, four protagonists are presented with intellectual disability. For his condition the metaphor of slavery is used, but it is not an internal oppression, but external and institutional one. The social system is much more oppressive and violent than the experience of the disease itself. They radicalize and oppose the therapeutic and normalizing attempts of society and thus question the dominant culture. The presentation of the disability made by Morales lacks the perspective of superiority, but also cedes from a different emotional perspective compared to the portraits of normative characters.

Desde la fundación del género, en los filmes de George Romero (1968), la figura espectral, monstruosa y masiva de los zombis se ha hecho depositaria de aquellos significados que las diferentes coyunturas históricas han posibilitado, tanto desde el punto de vista de la producción como de la recepción. En la actualidad, los muertos vivos de las ficciones contemporáneas figuran a modo de imagen dialéctica, tensionada por el disenso, los efectos de las políticas inmunitarias sobre la vida de aquellos que la sociedad, para autopreservarse y constituirse como un todo idéntico a sí mismo, margina o estigmatiza por considerarlos peligrosos, contaminantes o desechables. En este sentido, los zombis de las narraciones literarias, gráficas y audiovisuales actuales nos interpelan. Abren el espacio de una interrogación que pone en cuestión la biopolítica que rige la vida y el retorno de lo reprimido con la forma de lo monstruoso amenazante. Las ficciones de muertos vivos emergen en la narrativa argentina de las primeras décadas del año 2000 y sus relatos replican, complejizan y ponen en crisis la matriz del género que se había cristalizado en la cultura de masas, aún en sus numerosas autoparodias. En efecto, el carácter proliferante, no lineal e irónico del discurso narrativo, atravesado por el dispositivo neobarroco de la repetición con variaciones fractales, agrega una nueva voluta al género y lo renueva explotando su potencial político en el espacio imaginario que se construye a partir de la coyuntura del 2001.

Una de las obras literarias que más se prestan a un continuo estudio y revisión es Don Quijote de la Mancha, puesto que en la novela de Miguel de Cervantes encontramos un gran número de técnicas literarias que se han empleado posteriormente; también es fuente inagotable para nuevas novelas, no obstante de ella se han extraído historias y personajes que han continuado su “vida” fuera del Quijote. En el ámbito de la narrativa española contemporánea, el leonés Andrés Trapiello (1953) es el escritor que más destaca en el ámbito de las reescrituras quijotescas al ser autor de dos de las continuaciones más actuales de la obra de Cervantes, Al morir don Quijote y El final de Sancho Panza y otras suertes. En este trabajo abordaremos el estudio de ambas obras y seguiremos a los protagonistas de la novela de Cervantes en sus andaduras una vez fallecido Alonso Quijano. Comprobaremos que quien toma las riendas de las vidas de estos personajes no será Sancho, sino el bachiller, Sansón Carrasco, y profundizaremos en el porqué de la relevancia adquirida por este personaje.

The beginning of the 21st century brought an increase in the importance of populist politicians in some Latin American countries. The most important representatives of contemporary Latin American populism are Evo Morales from Bolivia and Nicolás Maduro from Venezuela. The narrative used in their speeches determines the political doctrine of both presidents. Various quotes from the examined discourses, then assigned to the presented linguistic characteristics, leave no doubt that the narrative fits with populist ideas.
El comienzo del siglo XXI trajo consigo un aumento de la importancia de los políticos populistas en algunos países de América Latina. Los representantes más importantes del populismo contemporáneo latinoamericano son Evo Morales de Bolivia y Nicolás Maduro de Venezuela. La narrativa utilizada en sus discursos determina la doctrina política de ambos presidentes. Varias citas de los discursos examinados, luego asignados a las características lingüísticas presentadas, no dejan ninguna duda que la narrativa encaja con ideas populistas.

Discursive Practices in Women’s Writing. Observations on Contemporary Spanish Fiction On the basis of contemporary Spanish women writers’ fiction we propose to investigate whether besides a series of specific themes there exist any “traits of femininity” inscribed in the literary discourse itself and what are their categories and characteristics. The category of gender is apparent in various aesthetic, narrative and formal examples such as psychological realism, firstperson narrative, fragmentarism, incoherent and disordered structures, or multi-perspectivism. Although it has assimilated some elements of the postmodern episteme and aesthetics such as the use of metanarrative references, the combination of different refined and popular literary genres or the technique of autofiction, the feminine discourse inclines towards narrative models deriving from the sentimental fiction, with its rhetoric of the extreme and exaggeration. Key words: contemporary Spanish fiction, womens’ literature, discursive practice, gender studies, postmodern narrative.
