Opis:
Intrinsic biquadratic interlayer coupling in magnetic layered structures is analysed theoretically within the spin-polarized free-electron approximation. The corresponding coupling parameter oscillates with the interlayer thickness with the oscillation period equal to half of that for bilinear term. An extrinsic mechanism following from a competition between the intra- and interlayer exchange coupling is also discussed.

Obydwie z proponowanych multiwarstw TiAlN/TiN i TiAlN/CrN podnoszą odpowiednio 3,1 i 1,4 razy trwałość ostrzy skrawających w stosunku do ostrza WC-Co bez powłoki. Trwałość ich jest także wyższa od trwałości ostrza z powłoką TiAlSiN, dostępnego na rynku.
Cutting tools for High Speed Machining (HSM) work under high stress and in high temperature. Additional machining processes are lead without cutting fluids that cause significant wear on the tool rake face. These high mechanical and thermal loads demand cutting tools with new kinds of coatings like ceramic/ceramic multilayers. Tested ceramic multilayers, TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN, have been deposited using cathodic arc plasma evaporation on WC-Co inserts. Commerce tools with a TiAlSiN coating and WC-Co without coating were tested for comparison with proposed new materials. TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN coatings have a hardness of 36 and 32 GPa, respectively. Low mismatch of lattice parameters especially for TiN and TiAlN can cause strengthening of the TiAlN/TiN multilayer, giving high hardness and wear resistance. Scratch tests confirm the very good multilayer coatings-substrates adhesion. Cutting test were done by the turning of quenched NC6 tool steel. Both multilayers TiAlN/TiN and TiAlN/CrN give rise of tool life over 3 and 1.4 times, respectively, in comparison with uncoated inserts. The durability of tools with multilayers is higher than commercial tool with TiAlSiN. Presented results show the high potential of multilayers as a new kind of coating for HSM of hardened steels.

The oscillatory behaviour of the giant magnetoresistivity versus Cu sublayer thickness was observed in Ni$\text{}_{83}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$/Cu multilayers with an oscillation period of 1 nm independently of buffer layer and substrates used in the experiment. The giant magnetoresistance field sensitivity equal to 0.02%/Oe and 0.15%/Oe for the first and the second maximum respectively, were found. It was shown that the giant magnetoresistance effect in our multilayers is not only due to the antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent permalloy layers but also due to the superparamagnetic-like behaviour related to the existence of the intermixed interfacial areas.

We report our ferromagnetic resonance measurements for three series of Fe/Zr multilayers with thickness ratio of Fe to Zr sublayers equal to 2:1, 1:1, and 1:2, respectively. These measurements may serve as an example of employing ferromagnetic resonance technique as a sensitive probe for monitoring the magnetic phases formed at interfaces in the earliest stages of the interdiffusion reaction in multilayer Fe/Zr films for which the onset of the amorphization takes place during deposition due to thermodynamics of the system. The resulting structure may be regarded as strongly inhomogeneous one that includes distinct ferromagnetic phases related to the Fe atoms in various surroundings.

The integration of passive components in printed circuit boards by using structured layers of different material leads to completely new technical challenges, both in technological realisations and in simulations or modelling of the embedded components. The integration of uiductive components is very interesting due to the substantial place reduction on the surface of the printed circuit board. In this context the shielding of the stray field of these inductive components leads to some new approaches in magnetic field calculation and simulation by planar structures. So in this paper the influence of FPC foils (Ferrite Polymer Compounds), m-metal and thin layers of copper on the magnetic field distribution and thus on the inductive coupling mechanisms in multilayers is analytically calculated and verified by some measurements. The presented results - measurement and simulation - lead to the final conclusion that the integration ofi-metal in comparison to FPC foils and thin layers of copper in the multilayer is one of the promising procedures for EMC-shielding.

The bilinear and biquadratic coupling between two metallic layers separated by a nonmagnetic metal spacer are studied. The paper contains analytical formulae for the coupling which are obtained from the energy potential of the spin-polarized electron gas. The formulae for the coupling are obtained in the framework of the Hohenberg-Kohn formalism of the density functional theory and variables of the coupling are the electron density and the spin polarization of the magnetic multilayer.

We studied experimentally and theoretically the magnetisation of the Co/Ti multilayers. The results showed that the magnetic moments on Co atoms located at the Co-Ti interface are strongly reduced. For d$\text{}_{Ti}$=0.35 nm the estimated effective non-magnetic Co thickness at the Co-Ti interface amounts ≈ 0.08 nm and ≈ 0.1 nm at 4 K and 295 K, respectively. We found a good agreement between experimentally determined and theoretically calculated magnetisations.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań strukturalnych, mikromechanicznych i tribologicznych powłok wielowarstwowych typu TiN/CrN. Powłoki o całkowitej grubości 1 μm, zbudowane z 2, 8 i 32 na przemian ułożonych warstw TiN i CrN osadzono laserem impulsowym na stali ferrytycznej metodą PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition). Strukturę powłok badano z użyciem elektronowego mikroskopu transmisyjnego (TEM). Badania właściwości mechanicznych wykazały zależność twardości i modułu sprężystości od liczby warstw w powłoce. Badania tribologiczne wykonano w styku kula (Al2O3) – tarcza w warunkach tarcia technicznie suchego, stosując obciążenie 0,5; 1 i 2N.
The structure and micromechanical and tribological properties of the multilayer of TiN/CrN are presented in the paper. The TiN/CrN coatings built of 2, 8 and 32 layers with the overall thickness of 1μm obtained by Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD) method were investigated. Analysis of transmission electron microscopy images (TEM) showed highly defective columnar structure of individual layers. The hardness and elastic modulus depend on the number of layers in the coating. In the case when a load carrying capacity of the ceramic coating-substrate system is exceed, ceramic layer cracks are created and multiply wear due to the presence of the hard abrasive particles between sliding surfaces. The load carrying capacity was defined as the smallest load applied on of the ball, which induced rapid abrasive wear of the coating. An increase in the number of the layers in the coating from 2 to 32, with a decrease of their thickness from 500 nm to 31 nm, strongly influence of the tribological properties. The maximum hardness (21 GPa) and the best adherence (LC = 8,4 N) are presented in the 8-layers coating, while the 32-layers coating showed the highest load carrying capacity and wear resistance as well as the lowest friction coefficient (0,1).

In this paper we report results of investigation into structure and magnetic properties of as-deposited Fe/Zr multilayers with different wavelength of modulation, λ, and thicknesses ratio of sublayers r = d$\text{}_{Fe}$/d$\text{}_{Zr}$. Three series of samples with r equal to 0.5, 1, 2 and λ from 12 nm to 1.2 nm were prepared by sputtering technique. The samples were studied by X-ray diffraction and torque curve measurements. It is shown that during deposition amorphization process takes place at interfaces. For nominal Fe sublayer thickness d$\text{}_{Fe}$ smaller than 2 nm the multilayers are found to be completely amorphous independently of r, and consist of alternating Fe-rich and Fe-poor amorphous sublayers.

Within a tight-binding LMTO approach in the atomic sphere approximation we calculate the exchange interaction, J, between magnetic Fe slabs in a periodic multilayer arrangement m Fe/n Cu/ .... We concentrate on cases, where Cu adapts to the bcc structure of Fe. For the "open" (100)-interface our results suggest that a minimal number of m = 13 Fe monolayers per Fe slab is necessary to get antiferromagnetic coupling. For m = 16 we find antiferromagnetic coupling for 8 ≤ n ≤ 14, i.e. a long period of ca. 11 and a short period of 2 Cu monolayers. In contrast, for the (110)-interfaces, only a long period of 14 monolayers is found, i.e. the coupling is antiferromagnetic for 7 ≤ n ≤ 14 already for small values of m. We then model the roughness by mutual interchange of 50% of the Fe and Cu atoms, respectively, in the interface layers and find that, due to the interchange, the coupling constant J, as a function of the Cu-spacer thickness n, roughly shifts by half a mono-layer to the right. In the (100)-case, the short period gets washed out by the roughness.

System of two magnetic layers with nonuniform distribution of anisotropy parameter and exchange coupled by nonmagnetic spacer is studied by means of the Green function approach. Our attention is focussed on the elementary excitations and low temperature magnetisation behavior. The spin wave parameter B in the Bloch law $T^{3/2}$ is found as an oscillatory function of a spacer thickness. The effects of damping leading to non-zero line-width of ferromagnetic resonance peaks are also taken into account. As a result the dependence of resonance line-width on parameters characterizing system under consideration is obtained for the case of uniform anisotropy parameter and for quadratic distribution of this parameter in magnetic layers, respectively.

Oscillations of magnetoresistance and thermoelectric power vs. both nonmagnetic spacer and ferromagnetic slab thicknesses are studied in the current-perpendicular-to-plane geometry, in terms of the single-band tight-binding model. The spin-dependent conductance was calculated from the Kubo formula by means of a recursion Green function technique, and the thermoelectric power directly from the well-known Onsager relations. In general, the observed oscillations may have either just one or two periods. In the latter case the long period of oscillations, related to spectacular beats, is apparently of non-RKKY type. The relative thermoelectric power oscillations are strongly enhanced in comparison with those of the giant magnetoresistance, have the same periods, but different phases and a negative bias.

We report on structural, magnetic, and GMR properties of permalloy/Au multilayers where permalloy = Ni$\text{}_{83}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$, deposited by face-to-face sputtering onto Si(111) substrate. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed a good structural quality of our multilayers. The samples were characterised with vibrating sample magnetometer, longitudinal magnetooptical Kerr effect and giant magnetoresistance measurements. It was determined that our multilayers are magnetically very soft with H$\text{}_{c}$ ≈ 1 Oe and show uniaxial anisotropy with H$\text{}_{K}$ ≈ 5 Oe. For gold sublayer thickness d$\text{}_{Au}$ close to 1.1 nm the antiferromagnetic coupling is present in very narrow Au thickness range (≈ 0.2 nm). Despite a good structural quality of samples relatively small giant magnetoresistance value (1.2% at room temperature) was found. It is due to non-perfect aniferromagnetic coupling caused by pinholes.

The (110) oriented V/Fe multilayers were prepared at room temperature using UHV magnetron sputtering. As a substrate we have used Si(100) wafers with an oxidised surface. The surface chemical composition and the cleanness of all layers was checked in situ, immediately after deposition, transferring the samples to an UHV analysis chamber equipped with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The structure of the multilayers has been studied ex situ by low- and high-angle X-ray diffraction. The modulation wavelength was determined from the spacing between satellite peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns. Results were consistent with the values obtained from total thickness divided by the number of repetitions. Growth of the Fe (V) on 1.6 nm V (Fe) underlayer was studied by succesive deposition and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements starting from 0.2 nm of Fe (V) layer, respectively. From the exponential variation of the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy Fe 2p and V 2p integral intensities with increasing layer thickness we conclude that the Fe and V sublayers grow homogeneously in the planar mode.

The $d_{V}-V$/0.6 nm-Fe multilayers with constant thickness sublayers were prepared onto naturally oxidised Si(100) substrate using UHV (5× $10^{-10}$ mbar) DC/RF magnetron sputtering. Results showed that the saturation field of the V/Fe multilayers oscillate with antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling peaks near the V spacer thickness of about 1.3, 1.6, 2.05 nm. Furthermore, all the samples with vanadium layer thickness near local maxima of the antiferromagnetic coupling show zero remanence. The short period of the antiferromagnetic peak oscillations is due to indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-type coupling of the Fe layers across vanadium spacer. The absence of the antiferromagnetic peaks in the very strongly coupled region (below $d_{V}$ ≈ 1 nm) could be explained by direct ferromagnetic exchange coupling of the Fe layers due to magnetic polarization of V atoms near V-Fe interface.

We report a study of structure and magnetic properties of Ni/Ti multilayers with different modulation wavelength, 10 nm ≤ λ ≤ 40 nm, and constant sublayers thickness ratio d$\text{}_{Ni}$/d$\text{}_{Ti}$=1. Specimens were characterized with X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer and torque meter in as-deposited state and in successive stages of isothermal annealing at 423 K. Hysteresis curves of as-deposited samples revealed the typical feature of ferromagnetic films with predominant shape anisotropy. During annealing very pronounced changes in the hysteresis loops were observed. An analysis of the loops indicates the occurrence of distinct changes in magnetic anisotropy of Ni sublayers: their effective shape anisotropy is drastically reduced due to a development of the perpendicular anisotropy and/or a modification of the microstructure. The effect can possibly be applied to achieve desirable variation of perpendicular anisotropy in multilayers which consist of Ni sublayers.

The as-deposited and annealed Co/Ag discontinuous multilayer-like structures were examined. Discontinuous Co sublayers are thought to consist of fine superparamagnetic and ferromagnetic grains. Using the bimodal superparamagnetic grain sizes distribution the GMR(H) dependencies were successfully modelled with the use of two Langevin functions simulating the magnetization of the superparamagnetic grains.

The (110) oriented Nb-Fe multilayers (MLs) with constant Fe and variable Nb sublayer thicknesses were prepared at room temperature using UHV magnetron sputtering. The artificial periodicity was revealed by intense satellite peaks in the low- and high-angle X-ray diffraction patterns. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements at 5 K revealed antiferromagnetic (AF) exchange coupling of the Fe sublayers for Nb spacer thickness of about 3 monolayers. The corresponding AF coupling energy is equal to about -1.36 mJ/m². The Nb spacer thickness corresponding to the position of the AF peak is in good agreement with ab-initio calculations within localized spin density approximations of exchange-correlation potential.

Co/Cu multilayers having different bilayer number (total thickness) were electrodeposited on polycrystalline Cu substrates with a strong [100] texture from an electrolyte including Co and Cu ions under potentiostatic control. The structural data from X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that all films have face-centered cubic (fcc) structure, but their crystal textures change from [100] to [111] as the bilayer number increases. The magnetic analysis by vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) showed that the magnetic moment per volume decreases as the bilayer number increases. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements were made at room temperature in the magnetic fields of ± 12 kOe using the Van der Pauw (VDP) method with four probes. The samples with the bilayer number less than 111 exhibited giant magnetoresistance (GMR) with a negligible amount of anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR), while the ones with the bilayer number larger than 111 have pure GMR effect.

Within a spin-polarized LMTO approach in the atomic-sphere approximation we calculate ab initio the magnetic properties of various binary and ternary multilayers composed of Fe, Co, Ni, Cr, V and Cu. The emphasis lies on the indirect exchange interaction of the magnetic sandwiches across the antiferromagnetic or non-magnetic spacers, and on the profiles of the intrinsic resp. induced magnetic moments. Among other results we find (i) that Ni is very sensitive on its neighborhood and that (ii) at the interface to Fe, V gets almost as strongly polarized as Cr, whereas in the interior layers, the V sandwich remains non-polarized.

Recent progress in UHV preparation and characterization methods resulted in a large variety of novel materials. Among them, magnetic multilayers have become one of the mostly investigated system due to interesting phenomena like oscillating indirect exchange coupling, spin dependent electron transport, or large perpendicular anisotropies. An attractive possibility given by the molecular beam epitaxy is to grow the multilayer structures on atomic scale by the so-called atomic layer deposition. At the low thickness limit, a multilayer structure, in which few atomic layers of different metals are stacked alternately, is expected to be an artificial ordered alloy. Such artificial material, which does not exist in the equilibrium bulk phase, was constructed for the first time as the AuFe ordered alloy of the L1$\text{}_{0}$ structure. Our conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy studies of this system verified the existence of the tetragonal phase, which is responsible for the perpendicular anisotropy. The ordering process is influenced by the complicated growth of Fe on Au, as shown by the atomic scale scanning tunneling microscopy investigations. Other systems to be presented are FeAl (strong ordering mechanism in the bulk) and FeCr (miscible in the wide concentration range) monoatomic

The temperature driven reorientation of the magnetization observed in thin ferromagnetic films and multilayer systems is studied theoretically. We take into account layer dependent magnetic anisotropies. The free energy and the direction of magnetization are calculated by using a perturbational approach as well as a nonperturbational treatment. It is shown that in most cases a continuous magnetic reorientation is obtained. An increasing anisotropy energy as compared to the exchange interaction leads to an increasing width of the magnetic reorientation.

Planar and cylindrical thermal models of biomedical multilayer structures with perfusion are presented in this paper. For each layer the models are solved analytically in frequency domain using the Laplace transform. Modeling the multilayer structure allows formulating the set of linear equations with unknown integral constants. As a result, the thermal impedance Zth(jω) is calculated. Next, the poles of thermal impedance are estimated using Vector Fitting (VF) method. Finally, distribution of thermal time constants allows evaluating the temperature response T(t) of the modeled structure.

Opis:
A multiferroic tunnel junction (MFTJ) is a promising device for future memory systems with discrete and different logic states which are controlled by a combination of electric and magnetic fields. The goal of ongoing research is to present ferroelectric and ferromagnetic properties, especially at room temperature (RT), represented as high values of tunnel electroresistance (TER) and tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR). A key aspect is the appropriate preparation of a sample allowing epitaxial growth. The thin layers were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on atomically smooth monocrystalline SrTiO₃ (STO) substrates. The ferromagnetic metal layers La_{0.67}Sr_{0.33}MnO₃ (LSMO) are separated by a layer of a ferroelectric insulator - BaTiO₃ (BTO). The same structure of LSMO, BTO and STO (perovskite) and a similar lattice constant make it possible to obtain high-quality heterostructures. Magnetic measurements confirm differences in the magnetic coercivity of the top and bottom LSMO layer, which allows to obtain their parallel and antiparallel magnetization orientation. A modification of the interfaces of BTO by thin MgO layer enables an increase in the value of the TER effect.

In this contribution we have studied magnetisation of Mg/Ni multilayers (MLs) to characterise the alloing effect near interfaces. The layered structure was characterised by standard X-ray diffraction. The MLs were deposited by UHV magnetron sputtering onto naturally oxidised Si(100) substrates. Results showed, that due to Mg-Ni alloy formation near interfaces the magnetizations of the MLs were strongly reduced. Effective "dead" Ni layer thickness was estimated as 1.2 nm at room temperature (RT). Furthermore, hydrogen absorption kinetics at a pressure of about 1000 mbar was studied at RT in Pd covered Mg/Ni MLs using four-point resistivity measurements. Results showed that the fastest initial rise in resistance in the first 9 s was observed for d_{Ni}=3.5 nm.

Deposition of the metallic multilayers is a part of the scientific program on the chemical reaction leading to intermetallic compound formation. This reaction is known as self propagation high temperature synthesis (SHS). The key problem in this investigation is to produce the metallic multilayer system with good repeatability of thin films thicknesses. Thin should be thin, parallel and with low volume of intermixing region between components. Computer control system for the pulsed (mid frequency MF) magnetron sputtering equipment dedicated for metallic multilayers deposition is presented in this paper. The rotation velocity of the sample holder and the gas inlet through membrane valves are the main parameters controlled by the system. Parameters of the magnetron gun power supply, sample temperature and technological gas pressure are registered. The process cards which define all process parameters are collected for each dedicated process type. All cards are collected in a process cards library which permits for full automatization of all operations. Software was written in a graphical LabVIEW environment.

The plot of resistance multiplied by the square of the thickness as a function of iron thickness shows that during the iron deposition initially amorphous-like Fe-Si mixture is formed, next the mixture crystallises, and finally bcc-Fe phase appears. The interface mixing is also manifested by the reduction of the total multilayer thickness measured by small angle X-ray diffraction.

Opis:
Generally, the mature fields have a good portion of the remaining reserves still trapped due to inefficient drainage, pressure decline, inerease in water cut, sand production and aging of the existing system. This paper addresses a methodology applied on the historical produetion behavior to identify techniques and initiatives to optimize the recovery factor based on redevelopment plans in a mature field. For Laslau Mare field in particular, there have been identified and implemented opportunities such as: infill drilling, work over optimization, dynamie underbalance perforation (DUP), acidizing, kick off with N2, propellant stimulation, snubbing, soaping, sand management, Wavefront Technology stimulation and wellhead and/or group compressor installation.

The correlation between magnetostatic or Néel's coupling and roughness of interfaces in sputtered Cu/Py/V/Py/MnIr/Cu multilayers was investigated with the help of atomic force microscopy and magnetometry. It is shown that the coupling strongly depends on the roughness of seed Cu layer which in turn depends on sputtering power. Roughness levels off after deposition of consecutive layers to about 0.2 nm rms.

Magnetic hysteresis and magnetoresistance of $[Ni_{80}Fe_{20}/Au/Co/Au]_{10}$ multilayers displaying giant magnetoresistance and sputtered on a flexible polypropylene substrates (an adhesive tape) is investigated. The magnetoresistive properties are very similar to those found in films prepared under the same conditions on Si(100) substrates. It is demonstrated, too, that a bendability of the substrates can be utilized to form cylindrically shaped magnetoresistive sensors with reduced anisotropy of the effect.

Opis:
A self-propagating reaction achieved by initiating an Al/Ni reactive multilayer foil can generate significant heat. The interdiffusion rate of the reactants plays an important role in the foils properties and is mainly affected by premixing and the bilayer thickness. The present research aims to characterize Al/Ni multilayer foils and to investigate their influence on an exploding foil initiator. Samples with different bilayer thicknesses were fabricated by magnetron sputtering. The heat released and the flame velocity were characterized. Foils with a stored energy of about 1100 J/g were prepared and the heat released revealed the existence of a 4 nm premixing layer. The analytical model proposed by Mann was employed to match the measured flame velocities; the fitted model showed good agreement with the experimental results. To make a comparison, Cu and Al/Ni exploding foils with the same bridge size were fabricated and tested in the identical discharge circuit. The results showed that the energy deposition ratio of an Al/Ni foil was 67-69%, while the value for Cu was only 39-45%, which indicated that Al/Ni multilayers could effectively increase the energy utilization of an initiator. Larger average flyer velocities were also observed with the Al/Ni initiators.

In this paper we study Fe/Si and Fe/Ge multilayers prepared at room temperature by magnetron sputtering. In situ conductance measurements reveal the formation of interfacial Fe-Si and Fe-Ge mixtures. During the Fe deposition a modification of growth mode is noticed. Deposition of Si (or Ge) onto Fe leads to the reduction of the Fe layer thickness due to interdiffusion, and Fe-Si (or Fe-Ge) structures appear. Above about 1.3 nm of deposited Si (1.5 nm of Ge) nominally pure Si (Ge) starts growing. Surface topography of the Fe/Si multilayers is studied by atomic force microscopy.

This paper reports on the use of a new technique to investigate the magnetic properties of thin films, multilayers and artificial structures, the X-ray resonant magnetic scattering at small values of the scattering vector. It can be used either by registering the reflectivity pattern or in a diffraction mode. In comparison with magneto-optical Kerr effect or neutron scattering, it offers an atomic selectivity due to the resonant excitation of a core electron, and even an electronic shell one. Examples are presented mainly in the soft X-range allowing to probe the 3d band of transition metals. They demonstrate the promising possibilities of the method to measure the magnetic moments carried by each of the atomic components in complex systems, as well as their distribution through thin layers, with an atomic resolution.

Complex microstructure analysis of TiN/Ti/a-C:H multilayer coatings, subjected to mechanical and biological tests, were performed by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM), respectively. Influence of interface numbers and phase ratios on coating properties was studied. Thin films were fabricated by a hybrid PLD technique (PLD supported by magnetron sputtering). The a-C:H phase was characterized by an amorphous structure, while TiN was built of columnar crystallites. Multilayer coatings contained sequentially deposited TiN and a-C:H layers with thin metallic Ti inter- layers deposited at each interface. Mechanisms of mechanical wear of analyzed systems were presented focusing on the cracking propagation revealed in the scratch test. Biological tests were done basing on smooth muscle cells adhesion to coating surfaces. An increase of TiN phase in the coating led to improvement of mechanical properties, while the carbon phase improved the biological behavior. Coatings comprising a higher rate of the carbon (a-C:H) revealed brittleness and were prone to delaminating. Optimal properties from the mechanical and biological point of view were stated for 8xTiN/Ti/a-C:H coating with 1:1 phase ratio (TiN to a-C:H).

The influence of temperature and annealing on giant magnetoresistance of Si(100)/Cu(20 nm)/Py(2 nm)/(Cu(2 nm)/Py(2 nm))$\text{}_{100}$ multilayer (Py = Ni$\text{}_{83}$Fe$\text{}_{17}$) sputtered at room temperature in double face-to-face configuration is reported. It was found that giant magnetoresistance value, ΔR$\text{}_{GMR}$/R$\text{}_{sat}$ (where R$\text{}_{sat}$ is the resistance in saturation), monotonically decreases with increasing temperature (4.5% at 173 K to about 1% at 373 K). This results from the decrease in magnetic change of resistance, ΔR$\text{}_{GMR}$, and to the lesser extent from an increase in R$\text{}_{sat}$, though both of them are caused by the shortening of electrons mean free path. The observed almost linear decrease in giant magnetoresistance saturation field with increasing temperature is explained by temperature changes of magnetization profile. Vibrating sample magnetometer measurements revealed that the increase in temperature results in pronounced decrease in remnant to saturation magnetization ratio (M$\text{}_{r}$/M$\text{}_{s}$) suggesting that at low temperatures magnetic bridges between Py layers play an important role in magnetization process. It is shown that proper annealing, by an annihilation of bridges and/or lateral decoupling, leads to an increase in giant magnetoresistance ratio from 3.4% in as deposited state to 4.7%.

The installation of the wavelength shifter at the BESSY I storage ring in Berlin makes it possible to apply the synchrotron radiation for white beam investigations of organic multilayers. Considering the energy characteristic of the synchroton radiation source and the absorbance of the beryllium window the synchrotron radiation can be used outside the UHV system for X-ray reflectometry and X-ray diffuse scattering between about 3 keV and 25 keV. Between 3 and 10 keV the synchrotron radiation intensity is high enough to realize the grazing incidence diffraction mode in order to get in-plane information. The capability of the methods is demonstrated at the example of a Pb-stearate multilayer covered by a thin polyelectrolytic polymer layer.

Opis:
In this article, the thick truncated cone shell is divided into disk-layers form with their thickness corresponding to the thickness of the cone. Due to the existence of shear stress in the truncated cone, the equations governing disk layers are obtained based on first shear deformation theory. These equations are in the form of a set of general differential equations. Given that the truncated cone is divided into n disks, n sets of differential equations are obtained. The solution of this set of equations, applying the boundary conditions and continuity conditions between the layers, yields displacements and stresses. The results obtained have been compared with those obtained through the analytical solution and the numerical solution. For the purpose of the analytical solution, use has been made of matched asymptotic method (MAM) and for the numerical solution, the finite element method (FEM).
Dla potrzeb rozwiązania analitycznego wykorzystano dopasowaną metodę asymptotyczną (Matched Asymptotic Method, MAM), a w rozwiązaniu numerycznym zastosowano metodę elementów skończonych (FEM).

The chemical composition of successive layers in a Co/Cu multilayered system was studied during growth with Auger electron spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out on a sample with 10 repetitions of Co(1 nm)/Cu(2 nm) evaporated at a very low deposition rate in ultrahigh vacuum. A very small amount of Bi or Pb (0.06 nm) was deposited on each Cu film in the system. The experimental data have shown that the concentration of Bi and Pb increases with the number of deposited trilayers up to coverage corresponding to 5 trilayers. At that point the concentration of the surfactant saturated. The changes in the surfactant concentrations are described with a simple model depicting the interaction of the surfactant atoms with the system and how the evolution of the segregation processes. It allows the prediction of the saturation concentration and helps to explain the behaviour of various elements used as a surfactant. The comparison between the theoretical predictions and the experimental results is also discussed.

Temperature and magnetic field dependence of magnetization of EuS-SrS multilayers grown epitaxially on KCl (001) substrate is experimentally studied by superconducting magnetometry technique. In these lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures EuS layers are ferromagnetic quantum wells whereas SrS layers are nonmagnetic spacer barriers. The multilayers composed of EuS layers with thickness 3.5-5 nm and SrS layers (thickness 0.5-10 nm) exhibit ferromagnetic transition at 17 K. In the multilayers with ultrathin SrS spacers (0.5-1 nm) a nonmonotonic temperature dependence of magnetization as well as a characteristic switching in magnetic hysteresis loops is observed. These experimental findings are explained considering antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling between ferromagnetic EuS layers via nonmagnetic SrS spacers. The strength of this coupling is determined based on model magnetization calculations.

In this work we report preliminary grazing-incidence X-ray reflectometry studies of multilayer structures composed of 3d metals Co and Cu deposited in the ultra-high vacuum molecular beam epitaxy system. The multilayers of different modulation period were deposited on glass substrate directly, or on 3d -metallic buffers of various thicknesses. The experimental specular reflectivity spectra were analyzed by a comparison with a theoretical model calculated from a recursive algorithm based on the Fresnel formula [1, 2]. It enabled us to estimate the structural parameters concerning layer thickness and roughness. The results obtained are correlated with magnetization measurements of the layered structures, as a function of modulation period, buffer type and thickness. A special attention to influence of interfacial roughness on magnetization results is paid.

Opis:
The study of ferromagnetic semiconductors continues to be of great interest because of their potential for spintronic devices. While there has been much progress in our understanding of ferromagnetic semiconductor materials - particularly of the canonical III-V system $Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs$ - many issues still remain unresolved. One of these is the nature of interlayer exchange coupling in GaMnAs-based multilayers, an issue that is important from the point of view of possible spintronic applications. In this connection, it is important to establish under what conditions the interlayer exchange coupling between successive GaMnAs layers is antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic, since manipulation of such interlayer exchange coupling can then be directly applied to achieve giant magnetoresistance and other devices based on this material. In this review we will describe magneto-transport, magnetization, and neutron reflectometry experiments applied to two types of GaMnAs-based multilayer structures - superlattices and tri-layers - consisting of GaMnAs layers separated by non-magnetic GaAs spacers. These measurements serve to identify conditions under which AFM coupling will occur in such GaMnAs/GaAs multilayer systems, thus providing us the information which can be used for manipulating magnetization (and thus also giant magnetoresistance) in structures based on the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs.

The metal oxide layers were deposited onto the surface of NiTi shape memory alloy using sol-gel method. Single-, double- and triple-layers were obtained from a colloidal solution containing the precursor of zirconium tetrabutoxide and titanium tetrabutoxide, and annealed at 300°C for 1 h in argon. Phase composition was determined by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Surface roughness of the metal oxide layers were determined by atomic force microscopy. Surface morphology and thickness of the obtained layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that all obtained layers revealed a composite structure, and were characterized by low surface roughness and thickness parameters. A homogeneous structure of the metal oxide layers deposited onto the surface of the medical NiTi alloy was ascertained only for double- and triple-layers.

Opis:
Kerr magnetometry was employed to study the temperature dependence of magnetization and magnetic hysteresis loops in ferromagnetic EuS-PbS semiconductor multilayers in the temperature range T=3-35 K at low magnetic fields H≤150 Oe. For EuS-PbS/KCl(100) structures with ultrathin non-magnetic PbS spacer of 1~nm, we observed a maximum on the temperature dependence of magnetization at low fields H≤30 Oe. For higher fields, we found for these structures a regular mean-field-like increase in magnetization with decreasing temperature. The same regular behavior was also found for EuS-PbS/KCl structures with thicker PbS spacer, as well as for all EuS-PbS/BaF$\text{}_{2}$(111) multilayers independently of spacer thickness. For qualitative interpretation of these findings, we consider two magnetic contributions to the total energy of EuS-PbS multilayers: the Zeeman energy and the antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling between ferromagnetic EuS layers via diamagnetic PbS spacer.

Metal-intermetallic layered (MIL) composites attract considerable attention due to their remarkable structural and ballistic performance. This study aimed to develop a Ti/Al-based multilayered MIL material by adding ceramic powders, since they can improve the composite’s impact resistance. To this end, an experiment was conducted which a stack of alternating Ti and al sheets bonded by hot pressing; Ti/Al multilayers containing additional layers of Al2O3 and SiC powders were also produced. The samples obtained were examined using electron microscopy techniques. The clads’ mechanical properties were investigated using a Charpy hammer. In the reaction zone, only one intermetallic phase occurred: the Al3Ti phase. The model with an additional Al2O3 layer showed the highest impact energy. none of the Ti/Al clads broke during the Charpy impact test, a result proving their high ductility.

A direct comparison between the Hall effects and giant magnetoresistance of ferromagnetic multilayers of similar composition $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20}//Au//Co//Au)_N$ with alternating in-plane and out-of-plane magnetization direction of Co layers is presented. The characteristic features at magnetic field-dependence of giant magnetoresistance were correlated with the creation and annihilation of the stripe domains in Co layer, with perpendicular anisotropy. The nucleation field values were investigated as an Au layer thickness function. Furthermore, the in situ conductance measurement results characterised the island growth mode of the ferromagnetic layers. The percolation thicknesses were also indicated.

Structures containing magnetic metallic layers attract a lot of attention because of their possible applications in the area of spintronics. The hybrid structures compatible with the Si crystal lattice parameter are of special interest. In this work the short-period Fe/Si multilayers were grown by the sputtering onto (001)-oriented Si substrate and investigated by various techniques. After the deposition, all multilayers were characterized by atomic force microscopy. The goal of the present paper was to determine the chemical composition of thin layer created at the interface in Fe/Si multilayers due to the Fe diffusion into Si, as well as to analyze the phenomena, which take place in this area. The results of the optical characterization by the Raman scattering were correlated with the magnetic properties of investigated structures (determined by means of the Kerr rotation).

Grazing incidence X-ray scattering measurements have been performed to probe the structure of CoFe/Ru layers and their interfaces. It was found that the interface width increased approximately linearly with the layer number from the substrate in a multilayer and that a substantial asymmetry existed between the width of CoFe/Ru and Ru/CoFe interfaces. By co-minimizing both the specular and diffuse scatter with that simulated from a model structure, the topological roughness amplitude was determined to be comparable to the intermixing interface width.

Recently we completed the very first and detailed perturbed angular correlation investigation on MBE-grown very thin film multilayers. The present paper aims to show that otherwise rather unaccessible but unique information on the (interface) magnetism could be obtained. For the Fe/Cr(1 0 0) multilayer system we observe, below a critical Cr thickness of 5.0 nm, a collapse of the spin-density-wave ordering in chromium. While the magnetization in the Fe-layer is in-plane, the Cr magnetization in thicker layers is out-of-plane. In the Fe/Co (1 -1 0) system, the observation of transferred magnetic hyperfine field satellites and their temperature dependence leads to the determination of an oscillating magnetic moment profile at the Fe/Co interface as well as a structure model for the superlattice.

Magnetic and structural properties of EuS/Co multilayers were studied by magnetic optical Kerr effect and SQUID magnetometry techniques and by X-ray diffraction method. The multilayers containing monocrystalline, ferromagnetic EuS layer (thickness 35-55 Å) and metallic Co layer (thickness 40-250 Å), were grown on KCl (001) and BaF₂ (111) substrates using high vacuum deposition technique employing electron guns for Co and EuS. All investigated EuS/Co multilayers exhibit ferromagnetic properties at room temperature due to Co layer with the ferromagnetic transition in EuS layer clearly marked upon cooling below 16 K. In EuS/Co/EuS trilayers grown on KCl substrate the antiferromagnetic alignment of magnetization vectors of Co and EuS layers was experimentally observed as a characteristic low field plateau on magnetization hysteresis loops and a decrease in multilayer magnetization below 16 K. In Co/EuS bilayers the characteristic temperature dependent shift of magnetization loops was found due to exchange bias effect attributed to the CoO/Co interface formed by the oxidation of the top Co layer.

The $[Co(1 nm)//Cu(2 nm)]_N$ multilayers with different numbers of bilayer repetitions (N=3 and 10) were thermally evaporated on Si(100) substrates with a small amount of Bi or Pb deposited only on the first and on the second Cu layer. The chemical composition of the surface after each step of the preparation process was studied by Auger electron spectroscopy. The evolution of the Auger peaks showed the segregation of Bi and Pb surfactants. During the evaporation of the subsequent Co and Cu layers, gradual decrease in the surfactant amount on the surface was observed. No appearance of Co peak on the Cu layer, and Cu peak on the Co layer even for a coverage of a few å indicates the layer continuity. The interface roughness of the surfactant-mediated Co/Cu layers analyzed by X-ray reflectometry (when surfactant was deposited twice) was similar to the pure Co/Cu samples. However, more repetitions of surfactant, by reduction of interface roughness, improve the layer quality.

The atomic environment of Bi atoms in the Co/Cu multilayered system was studied with X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Experiments were carried out on a Co(1 nm)/Cu(2 nm) system with 5 and 10 repetitions of Co/Cu evaporated with very low deposition rate in ultrahigh vacuum. A very small amount of Bi (0.06 nm) was deposited on each Cu film in the system. The X-ray absorption fine structure spectra were measured at the $BiL_3$ edge in the X-ray absorption near-edge structure and extended X-ray absorption fine structure ranges at the Beamline X1 of HASYLAB/DESY synchrotron laboratory in Hamburg. The experimental data showed different local neighbourhood of Bi, depending on the number of Co/Cu bilayer repetitions. The results are discussed in terms of the location and segregation of the Bi atoms as well as its possible oxidation ways.

We designed and fabricated metal-dielectric multilayers intended for passband filters in the ultraviolet range. We determined the dispersion characteristics by the Bloch approach to evanescent wave resonant coupling and calculated the spectral characteristics using the transfer matrix method while taking into account real dispersion and absorptive losses. We considered the influence of nanoscale interface roughness as a means to couple evanescent electromagnetic field to the propagating far field modes. In our structures both propagating and evanescent modes contribute to the overall performance, resulting in an enhanced transmission in the desired range, while retaining a strong suppression of undesired frequencies of more than four orders of magnitude. In our experiments we used radiofrequent sputtering of silver and silica and characterized our multilayers by UV-vis spectroscopy.

The paper presents the effect of the complex architecture of Cr/CrN+a-C:H coatings on their mechanical and tribological properties. These advanced coatings were compared with CrN single coatings and Cr/CrN multilayers. All of them were deposited by the magnetron sputtering technique. The conducted tests allowed nanohardness, elasticity modulus, fracture toughness, and adhesion of coatings to steel substrates to be determined. Tribological tests were carried out under dry friction and in the presence of phosphate-buffered saline PBS and foetal bovine serum FBS. For all test conditions, the friction coefficient and the wear index of the produced coatings were determined. The lowest wear and the lowest coefficient of friction are exhibited by coatings with complex Cr/CrN+a-C:H architecture. Furthermore, they are also resistant to the highly corrosive PBS environment.

In this paper we present the behaviour of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants of [Co$\text{}_{32Å}$Pt$\text{}_{xÅ}$]$\text{}_{6}$ multilayers as a function of temperature, external magnetic field, and non-magnetic layer thickness, observed by means of a torque magnetometer in an in-plane configuration. We have determined the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants from the magnetic torque curves for different temperatures and in different magnetic fields, taking into account the angle difference between the directions of the external field and the magnetization. Among the results of this paper there are the determination of the critical thickness of Pt and the need to introduce the third order anisotropy constant in the analysis.

Measurements of magnetic hysteresis loops of EuS-PbS multilayers performed in the temperature range 5-30 K by superconducting (SQUID) and magneto-optical magnetometers revealed a rapid increase in saturation magnetic field in multilayers with PbS spacer thinner than about 1.5 nm. It shows a monotonic increase in interlayer coupling strength with a decreasing PbS spacer thickness, in qualitative agreement with 1/2$\text{}^{n}$ dependence predicted theoretically for semiconductor magnetic superlattices.

Opis:
W pracy przedstawiono możliwości poprawy odporności na pękanie oraz zużycie powłok azotków metali i węglowych poprzez wprowadzenie międzywarstw z materiału charakteryzującego się sprężysto-plastycznym charakterem deformacji. Przedstawiono wyniki badań indentacyjnych i tribologicznych powłok wielowarstwowych Ti/TiN i a-C:H/TiN, które porównano z właściwościami powłok pojedynczych TiN i a-C:H. Mechanizm deformacji takich powłok określono poprzez testy indentacyjne z wykorzystaniem sferycznych wgłębników i analizę odcisków przy użyciu technik SEM i TEM.
The paper presents the opportunity of improving fracture and wear resistance of ceramic and carbon coatings through the introduction of metallic interlayers that exhibit an elastic-plastic character of deformation. The results of indentation and tribological tests of Ti/TiN and a-C:H/TiN multilayer coatings were compared with the results of TiN and a-C:H single coatings. The mechanism of deformation and fracture was analysed by spherical indentation and TEM, SEM microscopic observation of indents. The presented results showed the desirability of the introduction of thin titanium interlayers into multilayer structure. Thin Ti layers were plastically deformed under external contact loading which improved several times the fracture and wear resistance of tested multilayers in comparison to single layers.

Opis:
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań strukturalnych (TEM) oraz pomiaru mikrotwardości i adhezji do podłoża metodą zarysowania wielowarstwowych powłok Ti/TiN wytworzonych metodą ablacji laserowej (PLD – Pulsed Laser Deposition). Badano powłoki Ti/TiN o okresie multiwarstwy z zakresu 32–500 nm, o równych grubościach podwarstw oraz o różnym stosunku grubości TiN do Ti.
Ceramic/metal multilayers with a nanometer thickness of layers are a new type of material for tribological applications. A stack of hard ceramic and tough metallic layers give coatings with higher hardness, adhesion and wear resistance. In the article, micromechanical properties of Ti/TiN multilayers are presented. Multilayers were deposited on 2H7 ferrite steel by the PLD (Pulsed Laser Deposition) technique. The total thickness of multilayers was 1 žm, and the bilayer period varied between 32 nm and 500 nm. Multilayers 8x and 16xTi/TiN with equal thickness of Ti and TiN layers have the best micromechanical properties. For coatings with bilayer thickness 500 to 62 nm, linear rise between hardness and the count of interfaces has been observed. But for 32xTi/TiN, coatings with 16nm thickness of layers, a large deterioration of mechanical properties was measured. The same trend was found for scratch resistance of multilayers. Results give the conclusion that the Ti layer should not be thinner than 25 nm. The next rise of mechanical properties of multilayers could be obtained by changing of TiN to the Ti thickness ratio. 8xTi/TiN multilayers with ratios 1:2 and 1:4 were tested. Hardness of 8xTi/TiN with a 1:4 ratio (27GPa) is equal to the hardness of the ceramic layer TiN; although, there was the introduction of soft metal layers. Scratch resistance of this coating is two times higher than other coatings.

Opis:
The influence of repetition number N on magnetoresistance, magnetic reversal and structure of sputtered $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20}//Au//Co//Au)_N$ multilayers was investigated. The multilayers are characterized by in-plane $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20})$ and out-of-plane (Co) magnetic anisotropy of ferromagnetic layers and show considerable magnetoresistance effect (ΔR/R) of the giant magnetoresistance type. Increased N results in an enhancement of ΔR/R from about 0.5% for N=1 up to above 5% for N=15. This enhancement is caused by: diminishing the role of electron scattering at the surfaces, decreasing the effect of structural imperfection and the lack of the perpendicular anisotropy of Co layer in the first period. The interpretation is corroborated by low ΔR/R value observed for N=1 and an evolution of the ΔR(H)/R dependence with increasing N. The anisotropy field of Co layers also increases with N.

Opis:
The article presents investigation results for a Cu/Ni multilayer as annealed in the temperature range of 40 ÷300 degree Celsjus The Cu/Ni multilayer with a Cu sublayer thickness of 2 nm and an Ni sublayer thickness of 6 nm was fabricated by the magnetron deposition technique. The X-ray structural analysis, XRD, was employed for examination. The characterization of the multilayer before and after the annealing process was done by the measurement of the texture for the Cu/Ni(111) plane, as well as by topography examination on an atomic force microscope (AFM). The state of the multilayer surface were observed using a scanning electron microscope. The thermal stability tests showed that the multilayer had undergone delamination at temperature of 300 degree Celsjus . Up to this temperature, the multilayer retained clear phase boundaries, as confirmed by the presence of satellite peaks in the diffraction patterns. The annealing operation caused structural changes in the multilayer, such as grain growth and an increase in roughness and texture.
W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki badan wielowarstwy Cu/Ni wygrzewanej w zakresie temperatur 40÷300 stopni Celsjusza. Wielowarstwę Cu/Ni, o grubości podwarstwy Cu równej 2 nm i grubości podwarstwy Ni wynoszącej 6 nm, wytworzono technika osadzania magnetronowego. Do badań zastosowano rentgenowską analizę strukturalna XRD. Wygrzewanie wywołało zmiany strukturalne w wielowarstwie, tj. rozrost ziaren, zwiększenie chropowatości i tekstury.

We present the results of ferromagnetic resonance studies of the thickness dependence of magnetic anisotropy in 2 series of EuS-PbS multilayers grown on (111) BaF$\text{}_{2}$ and (100) KCl substrates with the EuS thickness varying in the range d=6-70 Å. The anisotropy constant K was found to follow the dependence K(d)=K$\text{}_{V}$+2K$\text{}_{S}$/d , with the surface term K$\text{}_{S}$ larger for layers grown on BaF$\text{}_{2}$ as compared to KCl. This difference is discussed in terms of different thermal stress-induced distortions of cubic crystal lattice of EuS. We found that the thickness of EuS layer required for the perpendicular (to the layer) magnetization is d ≤ 2-3 Å, i.e., it is below 1 monolayer.

Titanium carbide (TiC) hard coatings have been obtained on steel and silicon substrates by rf magnetron sputtering process. Two layer coatings have been deposited in order to improve adhesion on steel. The lower layer was titanium metal and the upper TiC layer was obtained by reactive sputtering of the titanium target in Ar and methane gas mixture. The study confirmed that the TiC layer composition depends on the reactive sputtering gas composition and substrate bias voltage. Film microhardness was measured by microindentation. Measurement results showed that the hardness coating depends on the microstructure of our coatings and the polarization of bias substrate is an important parameter to control the microstructure.

In the following we present the role of surface scattering at Au/Co and Au/Ni-Fe interfaces in Ni-Fe/Au/Co/Au multilayers deposited in different temperatures. Specularity parameter, which describes the electron scattering, is calculated from fitting in situ collected conductance data with the Fuchs-Namba-Tesanovic model. Application of the parallel resistors model enabled to depict changes between Au/Co and Au/Ni-Fe interfaces within multilayers for each repetition. The correlation between enhanced grain boundary scattering for higher deposition temperatures and surface roughness of Ni-Fe/Au/Co/Au multilayers is found.

A correlation between the growth process and electrical properties of $[Ni_{80}Fe_{20}(2 nm)//Au(2 nm)//Co(0.8 nm)//Au(2 nm)]_{15}$ multilayers is presented. A set of multilayers of identical composition was deposited in different temperatures. The changes in giant magnetoresistance amplitude were correlated with the changes in Co layers growth process that occur in different temperatures. The in situ conductance measurement leads to the growth mechanism identification in high temperatures as formation of Co islands. Intensified islandisation of Co was eventually confirmed by the temperature changes in shape of the Hall voltage loops, and the evolution of Co layers contribution.

We report on hard and soft X-ray reflectivity investigations of $(Ni_{80}Fe_{20} (2.2 nm)//Au(2.3 nm)//Co(0.8 nm)//Au(2.3 nm))_{10}$ multilayers. Specular reflectivity curves were measured with Cu $K_{α}$ radiation and circularly polarized synchrotron radiation tuned to Co $L_{3}$ and Ni $L_{3}$ absorption edges. Structural properties of the multilayers were determined from the hard X-ray reflectivity curve. Comparison of reflectivity curves taken at different photon energies shows: (i) small difference in peak positions in dependence of reflectivity versus scattering vector q, (ii) different shapes of satellite Bragg peaks, (iii) different ranges of q for appearance of the Kiessig fringes. Analysis of soft X-ray reflectivity curves taken as a function of magnetic field allows to determine magnetic properties of Co and NiFe layer specifically.

Opis:
In order to improve a corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of NiTi shape memory alloys, the surface of the NiTi alloy was covered by protective layers. The paper presents results of the layers composed of titanium nitride and hydroxyapatite (HAp). The TiN layers were deposited using the glow discharge technique and then the bioactive hydroxyapatite layer was formed from simulated body fluids solution. The results of the structure studies and microscopic observations confirmed that on the surface of the NiTi alloy a thin titanium nitride layer 35-50 nm thick (depending on the glow discharge technique parameters) was obtained. The structure of the deposited layers was studied by means of the X-ray diffraction technique. Also, mechanical parameters of obtained layers were characterized using nanoindentation. On the top of the titanium nitride, a layer consisted of hydroxyapatite and NaCl was formed. Applied parameters of deposition process did not lead to decomposition of the NiTi parent phase (B2) to the equilibrium ones.

Opis:
Magnetic properties of semiconductor EuS(t)-PbS(d)-EuS(t) ferromagnetic trilayers (t=30÷300Å and d=7.5÷70Å) grown on n-type monocrystalline PbS (100) substrate were studied by SQUID magnetometry and ferromagnetic resonance technique yielding, in particular, the dependence of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature on the thickness of the EuS layer. Structural parameters of layers were examined by X-ray powder diffraction analysis. A high structural quality of the substrate and the multilayer was verified by the measurements of the X-ray rocking curve width indicating the values of the order of 100 arcsec and by atomic force microscopy revealing the presence on the cleft PbS surface regions practically flat in the atomic scale over the area of 1×0.1μm$\text{}^{2}$.

Opis:
Series of Al₂O₃(0001)/Pt/(Fe/Pt)ₙ/Pt multilayers with variable number of bilayers n and thicknesses of individual layers were grown using molecular beam epitaxy to investigate influence of buffer layer structure, number of bilayers, and individual layer thickness on their structural and magnetic properties. Both columnar and monocrystalline 10 nm Pt (111) buffer layers were used in the experiment. Structure of Pt buffer layer determined the roughness of Fe/Pt interfaces and consequently magnetic properties of the multilayers. When multilayers were deposited on columnar Pt buffer layer, we observed increase of Fe/Pt interfaces roughness with increasing number of bilayers to values exceeding the nominal Fe/Pt bilayer thickness in the upper part of the sample volume, which resulted in the increment of coercivity in the sample with n=15 determined from hysteresis loops measured for perpendicular orientation of magnetic field. When Fe/Pt multilayers were deposited on monocrystalline Pt buffer layer, Fe/Pt interfaces were smooth regardless the number of bilayers. All samples, despite of the quality of buffer layer, number of bilayers, and individual layer thickness revealed easy magnetisation axis oriented in the sample plane.
