Opis:
Polysaccharide hydrogels are widely used in food industry and medicine. Gellan gum (GG) recently gained a lot of attention as a promising material for tissue regeneration proposes due to its excellent biocompatibility and similarity to natural extracellular matrix. However, in unmineralized form it is not suitable for bone tissue engineering because of weak mechanical properties. Enzymatic mineralization (e.g. using alkaline phosphatase – ALP) is one of the methods of calcifying of hydrogels and it resembles natural processes occurring during bone healing. The aim of this research was to investigate mineralization of hydrogels and to improve properties of gellan gum scaffolds by adjusting processing conditions. Since ALP does not form with GG covalent bonds, during incubation in mineralization medium (solution of calcium glycerophosphate - CaGP) it is diffusing from the samples. Therefore, mineralization effectiveness depends on the interplay between incoming CaGP and outgoing ALP molecules. We hypothesize that better CaGP availability, especially in the first hours of incubation, can result in more effective and homogenous precipitation of calcium phosphates (CaP) in GG samples. To this end, samples with different GG and ALP concentration were subjected to two different mineralization regimes (more and less frequent CaGP exchanges). We proved that better CaGP availability (more frequent CaGP exchange) resulted in better mechanical properties (Young’s modulus) and more effective mineral formation (higher dry mass percentage) of the samples compared to the same samples mineralized with lower accessibility of CaGP. This may be related to the fact, that in presence of fresh organic substrates, more CaP are formed in the outer parts of the samples at the beginning of the process, that limit ALP diffusion and allow more uniform mineralization.

Investigation was devoted determination if cancer tissues of lungs are mineralized or not. Moreover author like find answer for question: if the mineralization of tissue may lead to formation of cancer tumors or cancer tissues producers of substances necessary for lung mineralization? Maybe both phenomenon are possible? Investigation were performed using classic mineralogical methods on thin sections of cancer tissues done with the use of microtom. Obtained results confirmed the presence of trace mineralization of cancer tissues. It is represented by two types i.e. secret and visible mineralization. Both type are probably factors creating deformations of DNA leading to formation of cancer. This hypothesis have to be confirmed by experimental investigation.

Opis:
Our studies focus on ore mineralization in a contact-metamorphic aureole, using the Variscan Karkonosze Granite pluton as an example. The Karkonosze in trusion is enveloped by an Early Palaeozoic (about 500 Ma) metamorphic complex of the Izera–Kowary Unit composed of a diverse assemblage of gneisses, granitic gneisses, schists, amphibolites and marbles. The Budniki ore mineralization site was discovered in the early 1950's at the SE margin of the pluton. The uneconomic Ti-ox ide/sil i cate, Fe-Cu-Ni-Co-sulphide-sulphoarsenide, and uranium mineral deposits are hosted within amphibolites which were subjected to regional metamor phism fol lowed by contact meta - morphism. The Ti mineralization includes an ilmenite-titanite assemblage that originated from regional-metamorphic transformation of igneous Ti-bearing minerals, such as ilmenite and tschermakite, of the basic protoliths of amphibolites. During subsequent contact metamorphism, ilmenite was decomposed and, after wards, Al-rich titanite and rutile were formed. The Ti remobilization was coeval with an early stage of superimposed Fe-Cu-Ni-Co-sulphide/sulphoarsenide mineralization (pyrrhotite, pyrite, pentlandite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and Fe-Ni-Co-As-S phases), related to the activity of the Karkonosze Granite hydrothermal system. The ore minerals formed successively within a wide range of temperatures (625–250gradeC).

Some of the minerals in the vein described in this paper, namely, nickeline, hessite, native silver and minerals of the cobaltite-gersdorffite group, have not previously been reported from elsewhere in the Kraków-Lubliniec tectonic zone. Moreover, native bismuth, bismuthinite, a Cu- and Ag-rich sulfosalt of Bi (cuprobismutite) and Ni-rich pyrite also occur in the vein. We suggest that, the ore mineralization from the borehole probably reflects post-magmatic hydrothermal activity related to an unseen granitic intrusion located under the Mesozoic sediments in the Żarki-Pilica area.

The aim of this work was to study mineralization and degradation behavior of poly(ε-caprolactone) membranes modified with hydroxyapatite. The membranes have been obtained by electrospinning method. In vitro mineralization and degradation processes were carried out in simulated body fluid (SBF) as the release medium. The weight loss of the samples, water uptakes, pH and calcium, potassium, sodium ions concentrations of the solutions were determined. The chemistry and microstructure of the membranes after different times of incubation in SBF were characterized using SEM, FTIR, and XRD methods. The results of in vitro study in SBF indicate that incorporation of n-HAp strongly activates precipitation of the apatite like materials on the surface of nanofibers.

Opis:
Microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation is one of the biomineralization types closely dependent on the parameters of the microenvironment. Minerals are precipitated as a product of environmental and bacterial cell interactions, however, this system has very little control via microorganisms. The aim of research was to determine the influence of abiotic factors (pH, temperature, agitation speed of bacterial culture and calcium ion source) on the mineralization induced by Arthrobacter sulfureus, Bacillus muralis and B. atrophaeus strains under the standard laboratory conditions. Because of the key role of urease in biomineralization, processes occurring in environments with and without the urea were compared. For this purpose, cultivation of bacteria (A. sulfureus, B. muralis and B. atrophaeus) was carried out in B4 liquid medium for 5 days with various environmental parameters (pH 6-9; temperature 25-44°C; speed of agitation 0-180 rpm, different calcium sources). It was noticed that the pH and the speed of agitation clearly affect the amount of the calcium carbonate that formed. Our observations suggest that the highest precipitation rate takes place in alkaline pH between 8-9, with shaking at 180 rpms. Among studied sources of calcium ions (calcium acetate, calcium chloride and calcium nitrate), calcium acetate demonstrated the strongest potential in the biomineralization process. Moreover, work presented here demonstrates that the correlation between cultivation temperature and biomineralization process cannot be clearly evaluated. The morphology and size of calcium carbonate minerals was strain-specific, although affected by the presence of urea in the surrounding solution.

In this study, the role of polymer in precipitation has been examined by studying the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the formation of calcium carbonate particles. The CaCO3 particles were characterized by several techniques, such as FTIR, XRD, SEM, and particle size distribution analysis. In the absence of polymer, the mixing of reagents in an aqueous solution led to the formation of calcite crystals. Introduction of poly(ethylene glycol) molecules reduced the rate of crystallization process, and the effect was concentration dependent. In the presence of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.5 % of PEG, after 5 minutes of precipitation initiation, vaterite microspheres appeared in the system and which were transformed into calcite crystals after 24 hours. The calcium carbonate obtained with PEG was characterized by smaller sized particles in comparison with the ones without polymer.

Geochemical prospecting was conducted in three areas of the Pieniny Mountains: Wżar, Jarmuta and Bryjarka regions. Rock samples were collected in the regular grid of 100 x 100 m. A total number of 786 samples were collected from these areas (449 samples near Wżar Mt., 256 samples from Jarmuta, and 81 samples from Bryjarka). Forty-one samples were taken from the Wżar and Jarmuta quarries. Thirty samples of aqueous sediments and pan concentrates were collected from streams of the study areas. The geochemical studies show elevated concentrations of Pb, As, Bi, Cd, Zn, Sn, Tl and K (Rb) in the south-western part of the Wżar Mt., and elevated concentrations of Pb, Bi, Cd, Cu, Ni, Sb, Zn, Fe, Hg and Mn in the vicinity of Jarmuta. Stream sediment samples from the Bryjarka area contain 0.358 and 0.291 ppm Hg (Ścigocki stream) and 0.037ppm Au (Szczawny stream). These anomalies suggest the presence of weak ore mineralization associated with hydrothermal processes due to andesite magmatism. Based on analytical data, it may be concluded that investigated areas of the Wżar, Bryjarka and Jarmuta Mt. are not prospective for ore deposits. The only zone that requires detailed studies is the northern part of Jarmuta, where increased concentrations of Ag within the limits of 7.0-88.0 ppm were found in slope-wash clays in 12 neighbouring samples. The studies of pan concentrates show the presence of detrital gold in the Szczawny stream (1 grain) and the Grajcarek stream (3 grains in 2 samples).
