Opis:
The experiences and migration strategies of senior migrants differ significantly from those of their younger counterparts. However, since migration flows are dominated by younger migrants, the recent Polish migration discourse tends to present the younger migrants’ perspective. This article addresses this research gap by exploring the migration experience of older Polish migrants to the United Kingdom (UK). The types of older migrants currently living in the UK are discussed: namely those who have lived in the UK for several decades and those who have migrated late in life. The experiences and attitudes of both groups are then explored and compared in order to expose several assumptions concerning older migrants: the immobility of seniors; the vulnerability of older migrants; and seniors migrating exclusively as part of care networks. The article is based on qualitative research conducted in the UK in 2005–2009 and in 2017.

The purpose of this article is to present the various professional paths of highly qualified female migrants from Ukraine and Belarus, the most numerous groups of foreigners from outside the EU in Poland. The analysis is based on in-depth interviews with highly qualified female specialists, i.e. migrants who started work relevant to their education and/or specialist knowledge and did not have experience of working in typical “migrant” sectors (service industry, agriculture, care work, etc.). This article also provides an overview of the Ukrainian and Belarusian migration to Poland after the fall of the USSR.

The article’s aim is to demonstrate how migration regimes tacitly operate at the level of everyday practices. We propose to see migrants’ leisure, recreational use of parks in particular, as a venue for the internalization and embodiment of migration regimes. We seek to explore if migrants negotiate and resist these regimes through their everyday practices. Our study is based on 70 interviews with Ukrainian and Vietnamese migrants in Poland, Moroccan migrants in the Netherlands, Turkish migrants in Germany, and Latino and Chinese migrants in the U.S. We present migrants’ perceptions of urban parks’ rules and their interactions with other park users. Particular attention is paid to migrants’ ability to negotiate the existing regulations and to adjust these environments to their needs. We discuss the mechanisms that limit migrants’ ability to negotiate the frameworks of migration regimes through their leisurely use of urban parks.

Given that “migration” is a global phenomenon, the international community as a whole had to provide it with a legal basis and to find global solutions, as proven à l’évidence by both the international and the European legislation and the “Global Compact for Migration” approved by the European Council. As is well known, the European Union legislation consists of the texts of its official instruments, such as conventions, treaties, declarations, etc., in which we also find, in fact, the principles stated in the international instruments, which have, indeed, the force of jus cogens for all the states of the world, concerning the universal human rights, including, thus, the rights of the migrants. However, even in terms of their policy regarding migrants, the member states of the European Union have not only applied the principles stated in these international instruments, but they also have enacted a special legislation, and they have taken concrete measures for the implementation of its rules. In the present article I offer the reader the possibility to become acquainted not only with the text of the legislation of the European Union regarding migrants, but also with the policy and the actions taken by the European states for the implementation of the international legislation, and of the European one regarding the social rights of the migrants as workers.

We study the migrants’ assimilation, which we conceptualize as forming human capital productive on the labor market of a developed host country, and we link the observed frequent lack of assimilation with the relative deprivation that the migrants start to feel when they move in social space towards the natives. We presume that the native population is heterogeneous and consists of high-skill and low-skill workers. The presence of assimilated migrants might shape the comparison group of the natives, influencing the relative deprivation of the low-skill workers and, in consequence, the choice to form human capital and become highly skilled. To analyse this interrelation between assimilation choices of migrants and skill formation of natives, we construct a coevolutionary model of the open-to-migration economy. Showing that the economy might end up in a non-assimilation equilibrium, we discuss welfare consequences of an assimilation policy funded from tax levied on the native population. We identify conditions under which such costly policy can bring the migrants to assimilation and at the same time increase the welfare of the natives, even though the incomes of the former take a beating.

The history of humankind may be seen as a process of domination of a territory. Nowadays, there are practically no places on Earth, which would be untouched by man. The migration waves of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries played an important role in the process of taking possession of the earth's surface. The migrants settled in many previously inhabited areas, took advantage of them, by different means marked them as theirs, built roads and railways, measured and described them, gave names to different landmarks of the occupied territory, introduced their symbols, designed frontiers, and, last but not least, organised cemeteries.

Opis:
The fate of European citizens living in the United Kingdom was a key issue linked with Britain’s departure from the European Union. Official statistics show that some outflow has taken place, but it was no Brexodus. This article investigates Brexit’s impact within a theoretical (push–pull) framework using a survey of long-term Polish migrants in the UK (CAPI, N = 472, conducted in 2018). Our results show that the perception of Brexit as a factor discouraging migrants from staying in the UK was limited. Still, those with experience of living in other countries, those remitting to Poland, and those on welfare benefits, were more likely to find Brexit discouraging. However, many claimed that the referendum nudged them towards extending their stay instead of shortening it. In general, when asked about what encourages/discourages them from staying in the UK, the respondents mainly chose factors related to the job market. Therefore, we argue, in line with Kilkey and Ryan (2020), that the referendum was an unsettling event – but, considering the strong economic incentives for Polish migrants to stay in the UK, we can expect Brexit to have a limited influence on any further outflows of migrants, as long as Britain’s economic situation does not deteriorate.

The Catholic Church is a universal community. Therefore, the Catholic Church cares of people living outside their homeland. The primary objective of the structures of pastoral care of migrants is the integration of immigrants into the local community. The pastoral care of migrants should be adapted to the migrants needs, their culture and traditions. The pastoral care of migrants operates at three levels: the universal, the particular and the local. According to the Catholic Church migration is an international problem that should be resolved with the cooperation of all countries. The issue of cultural differences between migrants and local communities, should mitigate through learning of basic human rights.

In this contribution, we intend to examine to what extent multiliteracy approaches make it possible to emphasize and develop various aspects of reflexivity in action in a migrant student who is in close contact with several languages within his family and school environment. To answer the source question, we gathered a corpus of various graphic and verbal signs among secondary school multilingual students that we analyzed according to a qualitative approach in the migratory and educational context of Saint-Étienne (France). It is about student output resulting from a school project that aimed at strengthening the students’ literacy competences, along with highlighting their native cultures and languages. As a reflexive tool, the depicted project turned out to be a bridge towards a multi-literacy approach, for which we have detailed the guidelines, beneficial for the learning of the French language, or the learning of any new language; it entails supporting the making of the subject in writing, then allowing an updating of the migratory experience.

Opis:
The European Commission has lately been exposed to increasing pressure from the Italian and Greek Governments to actively participate in solving the problem of growing immigration from African and Middle East countries. This surging pressure has resulted in actions aimed at redistributing immigrants among the EU Member States. The implementation of this solution would mean that the immigration issue is most likely to also affect countries which have not had to deal with large immigrant populations in the past. This article focuses on potential immigration to Poland, as one the largest economies in the EU Member States. It aims to answer the question whether Poland needs and is ready, in social, economic and cultural terms, to accept international immigrants from developing countries. Another problem tackled by this paper is the European Union’s attitude towards immigration. It is argued that the redistribution of migrants will be pointless unless other accompanying actions are taken simultaneously. The twin issues of the immigration crisis and the distribution of immigrants have revealed problems resulting from differences between the Member States in terms of their quality of life, including differences in wages and social benefits. This article posits that had the EU met the cohesion goal many economic and social problems, including migrants’ distribution, would not have arisen.

Immigrants’ life histories can provide us with a lot of useful information that can help us understand the contemporary phenomenon of migration from pedagogical, sociological and economic points of view. The paths and trajectories of entire communities remain unknown, their needs unheard and the enormous wealth in terms of the relationships, the level of mutual help and the competences is neither brought to light nor properly evaluated. This paper, born of a series of biographical interviews carried out with adult immigrants from countries in West Africa, reflects on the relationship between education, work, and the communities to which the immigrants belong.

Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badania, którym objęte zostały opublikowane w mediach społecznościowych wypowiedzi migrantów z Polski w Wielkiej Brytanii i z Ukrainy w Polsce.
The article presents the analysis of posts published in social media by Polish migrants settled in the United Kingdom and Ukrainian migrants in Poland. The paper uses the concept of social anchoring defi ned as the process of searching for points of reference (anchors) which allow individuals to acquire socio-psychological stability and security and function eff ectively in a new life environment. The research showed the role of objective anchors such as employment, economic resources and institutional environment of the destination country as well as the crucial role of anchors embedded in social relations. Migrants from both analysed groups anchored themselves in strategically-imagined communities while constructing their ethnic and class identities that became their points of references in the new socio-cultural environment. In the narratives of Polish migrants in the UK the main reference groups are white, British citizens on one side and members of non-European minorities on the other. At the same time Polish migrants emphasize class and educational diff erences among the Polish community in the UK. In the case of the Ukrainian migrants in Poland the main reference group consists of members of the Polish, homogenous society. They also construct their identities with reference to European values. The research showed that in narratives of both analysed groups a pro-integration attitude is preferred.

Based on a number of in-depth interviews with Ukrainian migrants in Warsaw, we find that Ukrainian migrants’ networks are based primarily on ties homogenous in regard to nationality, level of education and character of work. The institutional context of social interaction determines with whom migrants form relations and whether these ties become a source of social advancement. The studied migrants do form bridging ties with more experienced, as well as socially and legally embedded persons, mainly other migrants, receiving both instrumental and emotional support.

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyse various motives and circumstances of return migration present in the narratives of Polish migrants, who grew up abroad and as young adults returned to their country of origin. It shows how the migration experiences in childhood and adolescence may affect subsequent attitudes and plans. I distinguish four types of return migration based on the main motives that guided the interviewees in their decisions: 1) return as a family strategy, 2)sentimental and patriotic return, 3) romantic return, 4) escapist return. Within each type I explain the processes that led to the decision and the expectations which accompanied it. I point out how these depend on: the stage of life in which the migration occurred, its length and nature and the parents’ attitude towards the Polish culture. The article is based on 17 in-depth interviews with Polish return migrants. The interviewees spent all or a significant part of their childhood in different countries of the western cultural sphere. Among them were two individuals who had spent some time in Arabic countries, although they attended international schools. The length of their emigration varied from 6 to 20 years, and the age upon return to Poland was 16 to 27.

The article explores the strategies of practicing “Belarusianness” in the context of migration - by Belarusians who settled in Poland with their children. It is based on empirical research concerning the biographical context of their life situation, conducted using semi-structured in-depth interviews and casual conversations. As “Belarusianness” I define a range of criteria which influence the identity of the interviewees and which imply a sense of national distinctiveness. Another analysed aspect is the parenting strategies of the interviewees in view of their emigration to Poland, and how they influence the identity formation of second generation migrants, i.e. their children.

Upward social mobility appears in different guises; it can pertain to education, occupation, cultural capital, income etc. Until recently, the phenomenon of upward social mobility concerned a small number of emigrant Poles, with “migrants of success” composing only a small minority of a much larger number of Polish migrants in previous years. The accession of Poland to the European Union in 2004, and then to Schengen Zone in 2007, opened new opportunities. This article (based on my ethnological fieldwork) presents different ways that Poles who emigrated to Berlin between 1980 and 2016 managed to enact upward social mobility and the changing characteristics of this migration pattern. Nowe możliwości otworzyło przystąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej (w 2004 r.), a następnie wejście do strefy Schengen (w 2007 r.). Artykuł (oparty o własne badania jakościowe) przedstawia drogi do awansu społecznego migrantów z lat 1980-2016, na tle zmieniających się uwarunkowań.

Opis:
The present paper is based on the research project “(Un)easy returns home. The functioning of children and young people returning from emigration”, the main goal of which was to investigate and describe the experience of children from Polish returning migrant families, and specifically to answer the question: What kind of challenges do children from families returning to Poland face when entering the Polish educational system? We conducted qualitative research taking into consideration four perspectives: children, adolescents, parents and teachers. In this paper, we focus on the most important challenges in a new educational context based on the narrations of children, adolescents, parents and teachers and dividing the challenges into three groups: purely educational, socio-cultural and emotional. Finally, we also discuss best practices which proved helpful for children’s adaptation to the new environment and which may be used in the school context.

Opis:
The article applies the concept of anchoring, defined as the process of searching for footholds and points of reference which allows individuals to acquire socio-psychological stability and security and function effectively in a new environment, to explore complex, multidimensional and flexible adaptation and settlement processes among migrants from Ukraine in Poland. Based on 40 in-depth interviews and questionnaires with migrants resident in Warsaw and its vicinity, we argue that the traditional categories employed for analysing migrants’ adaptation and settlement such as 'integration' or 'assimilation' are not always adequate to capture the way of functioning and experience of contemporary Ukrainian migrants. Rather than traditional categories, we propose to apply the concept of anchoring which enables us to capture Ukrainians’ 'fluid' migration, drifting lives and complex identities as well as mechanisms of settling down in terms of searching for relative stability rather than putting down roots. The paper discusses the ambiguous position of Ukrainian migrants in Poland constructed as neither the strangers nor the same, gives insight into their drifting lives and illuminates ways of coping with temporariness and establishing anchors providing migrants with a sense of stability and security. This approach, linking identity, security and incorporation, emphasises, on the one hand, the psychological and emotional aspects of establishing new footholds and, on the other hand, tangible anchors and structural constraints. Its added value lies in the fact that it allows for complexity, simultaneity and changeability of anchoring and the reverse processes of un-anchoring to be included.

Theoretical background: Job loss is considered a stressful personal experience that may have a negative impact on an individual’s life. The rapidly increasing unemployment rate is not only a private matter but also a public concern entailing negative socio-economic consequences.Purpose of the article: This research aimed to provide a better understanding of the experiences of migrants who lost jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland.Research methods: The specific research questions that guided this study were: “What was the experience of job loss for the migrants who worked in Poland during the pandemic?”, “What were the coping strategies and how were they affected by COVID-19?”. The interview texts were analyzed using thematic analysis. A purposeful sampling strategy was supplied with snowball sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 participants.Main findings: Respondents applied several coping techniques, starting with finding a new job, emphasizing positive aspects, and keeping busy with self-development activities adjusted to pandemic restrictions. The pandemic has not forced any respondent to give up any particular way of coping with job loss, even in terms of social support, despite the risk of infection and the government’s recommendation to isolate. Respondents reported also a very limited inflence of pandemic on their job searching process, with the only difference to the detriment of non-EU migrants, who noted the emerging reluctance of employers to deal with visa and residence permit bureaucracy.

The current Polish migrant group in Sweden is the largest in Scandinavia, and experienced a significant growth after the enlargement of the European Union in 2004. The present overview is an attempt to give a systematic picture of this group, and is based on a selection of publications from a larger bibliography. The bibliography was compiled by the author in order to survey the knowledge on Polish migrants in Sweden, and is attached to this overview. The overview is primarily confined to the period between 1940 and 1990 because this period is covered by the scholarly literature.

Opis:
The paper deals with the importance of neighbourhood ties in the social networks of circular migrants. While existing research shows that social networks constitute a crucial element in the process of circular migration, not much is known about the extent to which these networks are territorialised. The paper discusses this issue by analysing the case of Ukrainian migrants in Warsaw and its suburbs, who are close to the receiving society in both cultural and geographic terms and thus make this group a unique case compared to immigrants travelling to Europe from more distant places. The analyses are based on data collected in a survey on Ukrainian migrants carried out in 2010 by the Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw, with the help of Respondent Driven Sampling (RDS). The studied sample consists of 342 respondents with different duration of migration from Ukraine to Poland. The paper argues that neighbourhood ties do not play an important role in the social capital and mobility patterns of Ukrainian circular migrants. The social relations of migrants are formed through ethnic and kinship ties, which are not related to a specific local area. The analyses also confirm earlier findings which show that Ukrainian migrants do not tend to concentrate spatially in the Warsaw metropolitan area, but which do point to the existence of small ethnic clusters. However, these seem to be determined by structural factors such as the availability of flats rather than individual preferences to live close to co-ethnics, which altogether suggests that there is a limited potential for local community formation among Ukrainian migrants.
