Opis:
The paper presents results of a study, in which an incomplete correlation between the mineral bone tissue density and patient susceptibility to bone fractures was confirmed. A simple model describing distribution of internal forces present in the microstructure of trabecular bone is proposed. The purpose of this model is to demonstrate that parameters of mechanical strength depend not only on the quantity of mineral material in the bone, but also on the quality of the trabecular structure. In addition, we present the results of cortical and trabecular bone micro hardness test, which are then used to calculate of the modulus of elasticity. Micro-hardness test was performed using Micro-Combi-Tester equipment. Micro-hardness was measured with Vickers diamond; analysis of displacement prosperities was carried out by Olivier and Pharr method. Young's modulus was calculated directly from the resulting unloading curve. Generally, the results for both cortical and trabecular bone tests correspond to the results known from literature. However, depending on localization of the test, slight deviations in modulus of elasticity occur. In conclusion of this research, it is proposed that the dependence between bone mineral density and Young's modulus can be calculated using samples of a normal bone and a bone with changed biomechanical properties. The aim of this research would be to estimate a quantitative coefficient, which would describe differences between mineral bone density and the bone's real density, which is responsible for the immunity to fractures.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to assess the influence of various feed phosphates on the structural and mechanical properties as well as on the chemical composition of femurs in adult pigs (weight approx. 110 kg). Three types of phosphates - monocalcium phosphate (MCP), dicalcium phosphate (n-DCP) and calcium-sodium phosphate (CSP) - were used alternatively in pigs fed with the standard feed mixture. The MCP and CSP phosphates were typical, imported products used traditionally in pig feeding. Dicalcium phosphate (n-DCP) was manufactured in Poland on the basis of phosphoric acid with the new pro-ecological method. The following parameters were determined: the mean physical density of the samples of the compact and spongy bone tissue, values of Young's modulus, strength and the energy of deformation, and Vickers microhardness (HV). Also the content of C, O, Na, Mg, Al, and Si, as well as Ca, P and Sr was determined. Significant differences in mean values of the mentioned parameters occurred between the studied groups. The best mechanical properties were shown by the bones from the n-DCP group, and the compact bone tissue (diaphysis) contained the most Ca, P, and Sr when compared to the MCP and CSP groups.

Opis:
The paper presents the analysis of mechanical properties of human hip joint bone behaviour basing on the finite elements methods (FEM). Models of a hip joint have been worked out. Stress patterns in these biomechanical systems have been determined. The examination covers the analysis of stress patterns in elaborated models for given examples of a femoral bone loading in respective walking phases. It has been stated that prediction of bone remodelling could be based on methods applied in mechanics of materials and data of a bone mineral content and bone mineral density determined by the densitometry method. The work is an attempt of the bone tissue assessment criterion approach useful in implantology problems in which the bone tissue density depends on the bone loading.

Opis:
In this study the attempts to improve mechanical properties of highly-porous titanium dioxide scaffolds produced by polymer sponge replication method were investigated. Particularly the effect of two-step sintering at different temperatures on microstructure and mechanical properties (compression test) of the scaffolds were analysed. To this end microcomputed tomography and scanning electron microscopy were used as analytical methods. Our experiments showed that the most appropriate conditions of manufacturing were when the scaffolds were heat-treated at 1500 °C for 1 h followed by sintering at 1200 °C for 20 h. Such scaffolds exhibited the highest compressive strength which was correlated with the highest linear density and the lowest size of grains. Moreover, grain size distribution was narrower with predominating fraction of fine grains 10–20 μm in size. Smaller grains and higher linear density suggested that in this case densification process prevailed over undesirable process of grain coarsening, which finally resulted in improved mechanical properties of the scaffolds.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of internal architecture of 3D printed scaffolds on their mechanical properties. The polycaprolactone scaffolds with four different geometries produced by rapid prototyping were tested in this study. The 3D samples were manufactured with different internal architecture. The scaffolds were plotted using a 330 ym dispensing needle, layer by layer with lay-down pattern of the fibers: 00/450/900, 0P/60°/120°, 00/900/1800 and 00/600/1200 with shifted layers. Scanning electron mic¬roscopy analyses and mechanical properties examinations were performed. The mechanical test showed that the highest Young's modulus was obtained for the samples with 0P/6CP/12CP lay-down pattern, especially after layers shifting. The SEM analyzes didn't show any defects or layers delamination in the scaffolds. All the samples were characterized by appropriate 3D architecture and good layers connections. The obtained results confirmed the hypothesis that scaffolds with 00/60°/120l0 lay-down pattern of the fibers and with shifted layers have the highest mechanically properties of the investigated samples and therefore, show high potential to be used in bone tissue engineering application.

Opis:
The aim of this work was to evaluate the properties of polymer blends of poly(L-lactide) and poly(L-lactide-co-trimethylene carbonate) 15/85 and to select two compositions to be used to prepare the materials for bone and cartilage tissue engineering. PLLA and PLLATMC as the polymers with significantly different mechanical properties could be used to prepare a wide range of polymer blends. They were investigated by ultimate tensile strength and Young modulus measurements. Considering similar mechanical properties to these types of human tissues PLLA:PLLATMC 80:20 and 30:70 blends have been chosen as appropriate materials for bone and cartilage engineering, respectively. The materials were examined by thermal analysis (thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry), ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and surface analysis (roughness and contact angle measurements). Miscibility of two polymers was discussed. High thermal stability of the blends allow to process them by fused deposition modelling which is one of the most promising methods for the manufacturing of computationally designed scaffolds. Based on the results of thermal analysis at least partial miscibility of PLLA and PLLATMC in the examined blends is indicated. Detailed interpretation of ATR-FTIR spectra let to distinguish the polymers despite their structural similarities. Surface properties of the materials depend on the preparation method and on their form.
