Opis:
In the field of ocean engineering, the task of spatial hull modelling is one of the most complicated problems in ship design. This study presents a procedure applied as a generative approach to the design problems for the hull geometry of small vessels using elements of concurrent design with multi-criteria optimisation processes. Based upon widely available commercial software, an algorithm for the mathematical formulation of the boundary conditions, the data flow during processing and formulae for the optimisation processes are developed. As an example of the application of this novel approach, the results for the hull design of a sailing yacht are presented.

Opis:
Aiming at the challenges to the accurate and stable heading control of underactuated unmanned surface vehicles arising from the nonlinear interference caused by the overlay and the interaction of multi interference, and also the uncertainties of model parameters, a heading control algorithm for an underactuated unmanned surface vehicle based on an improved backpropagation neural network is proposed. Based on applying optimization theory to realize that the underactuated unmanned surface vehicle tracks the desired yaw angle and maintains it, the improved momentum of weight is combined with an improved tracking differentiator to improve the robustness of the system and the dynamic property of the control. A hyperbolic tangent function is used to establish the nonlinear mappings an approximate method is adopted to summarize the general mathematical expressions, and the gradient descent method is applied to ensure the convergence. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has the advantages of strong robustness, strong anti-interference and high control accuracy. Compared with two commonly used heading control algorithms, the accuracy of the heading control in the complex environment of the proposed algorithm is improved by more than 50%.

Opis:
Two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines are widely used in large ships due to their good performance and fuel economy. However, there have been few studies of the effects of lubricating oils on the vibration of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines. In this work, the effects of three different lubricating oils on the vibration characteristics of a low-speed engine are investigated, using the frequency domain, time-frequency domain, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) methods. The results show that non-invasive condition monitoring of the wear to a cylinder liner in a low-speed marine engine can be successfully achieved based on vibration signals. Both the FFT and STFT methods are capable of capturing information about combustion in the cylinder online in real time, and the STFT method also provides the ability to visualise the results with more comprehensive information. From the online condition monitoring of vibration signals, cylinder lubricants with medium viscosity and medium alkali content are found to have the best wear protection properties. This result is consistent with those of an elemental analysis of cylinder lubrication properties and an analysis of the data measured from a piston lifted from the cylinder after 300 h of engine operation.

Opis:
The installation error of an acoustic transceiver array is one of the important error sources in an ultra-short baseline (USBL) system. In a USBL system with a positioning accuracy of 0.5%, an installation error angle of 1 will lead to a positioning error of 1.7% times the slant distance. In this paper, a dual transponder-based installation angle error calibration method for USBL is proposed. First, the positioning errors induced by various installation angles are deduced and analysed using the linear measurement of seafloor targets. Then, an iterative algorithm is proposed that estimates the rolling alignment error, pitching alignment error, and heading alignment error, in that order. The simulation and experienced results show that, after three iterations, the estimates of the three alignment errors can converge quickly, all of the estimates converge to within 0.001 and the estimated values are very close to the true values. The horizontal positioning error caused by the installation error angle can be reduced by nearly 75%. The method has good effectiveness and robustness, and can greatly improve the positioning accuracy of the USBL system.

In recent years, issues related to the impact of human activity on the natural environment have become pressing, and the challenge of global warming necessitates immediate action. To support environmental protection efforts, it has become imperative to adopt a broader perspective when evaluating various products and systems. A valuable tool for such assessments is a life cycle assessment (LCA), which enables a comprehensive analysis of the entire life cycle of a product. This paper presents a comparative analysis of the hull of a fast patrol craft, fabricated using three different materials: steel, aluminium, and composite materials. The LCA covers every stage from material production, through the construction and use of the hull, to its eventual disposal. A specific criterion was established to evaluate the impact of the hull on the environment, with clearly defined system boundaries. In the final section, we draw some conclusions that underscore the importance of reusing construction materials. By emphasising this approach, ecological footprints can be minimised and a sustainable future can be created.

A CO2 boiled off gas (CO2 BOG) reliquefaction system using liquid ammonia cold energy is designed to solve the problems of fuel cold energy waste and the large power consumption of the compressor in the process of CO2 BOG reliquefaction on an ammonia-powered CO2 carrier. Aspen HYSYS is used to simulate the calculation, and it is found that the system has lower power consumption than the existing reliquefaction method. The temperature of the heat exchanger heater-1 heat flow outlet node (node C-4) is optimised, and it is found that, with the increase of the node C-4 temperature, the power consumption of the compressor gradually increases, and the liquefaction fraction of CO2 BOG gradually decreases. Under 85% conditions, when the ambient temperature is 0°C and the temperature of node C-4 is -9°C, the liquid fraction of CO2 BOG reaches the maximum, which is 74.46%, and the power of Compressor-1 is the minimum, which is 40.90 kW. According to this, the optimum temperature of node C-4 under various working conditions is determined. The exergy efficiency model is established, in an 85% ship working condition with the ambient temperature of 40°C, and the exergy efficiency of the system is the maximum, reaching 59.58%. Therefore, the CO2 BOG reliquefaction system proposed in this study could realise effective utilisation of liquid ammonia cold energy.

The functional layout of fire safety equipment in technical spaces of ships is a time-consuming process. When designing a ship fire protection system, the designer must manually position each system component in such a way as to meet the requirements of regulations arising from the technical specification, various legal regulations of maritime conventions and classification societies of the vessel to be designed. Layout of fire hydrants assisted by a computer that is based on pre-defined criteria and various constraints could significantly support the designer in working easier and faster. This paper presents a prototype computer-aided design system that enables optimal placement of fire hydrants using the metaheuristic Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm. This algorithm was used in Rhinoceros 3D software with its Grasshopper plugin for visualizing the arrangement of fire safety equipment. Various solution arrangements compared with the fire hydrant placement in real ships are illustrated by a case study. Demonstrating how design work can be facilitated and what potential benefits can be achieved are presented as well.

Opis:
A consistent approach to the development of tuning rules for course-keeping and path-tracking PID controllers for a ship autopilot are presented. The consistency comes from the observation that for each of the controllers the controlled plant can be modelled by an integrator with inertia. In the case of the course controller, it is the well-known Nomoto model. The PID controller may be implemented in series or parallel form, the consequence of which is a 2nd or 3rd order of the system, specified by a double or triple closed-loop time constant. The new tuning rules may be an alternative to the standard ones given in [1,2]. It is shown that, whereas the reference responses for the standard and new rules are almost the same, the new rules provide better suppression of disturbances such as wind, waves or current. The parallel controller is particularly advantageous. The path-tracking PID controller can provide better tracking accuracy than the conventional PI. Simulated path-tracking trajectories generated by a cascade control system are presented. The novelty of this research is in the theory, specifically in the development of new tuning rules for the two PID autopilot controllers that improve disturbance suppression.

Opis:
Marine centrifugal fans usually work in harsh environments. Their vibration signals are non-linear. The traditional fault diagnosis methods of fans require much calculation and have low operating efficiency. Only shallow fault features can be extracted. As a result, the diagnosis accuracy is not high. It is difficult to realize the end-to-end fault diagnosis. Combining the Complete Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition with Adaptive Noise (CEEMDAN) and lightweight neural network, a fault classification method is proposed. First, the CEEMDAN can decompose the vibration signal into several intrinsic modal functions (IMF). Then, the original signals can be transformed into 2-D images through pseudocolour coding of the IMFs. Finally, they are fed into the lightweight neural network for fault diagnosis. By embedding a convolutional block attention module (CBAM), the ability of the network to extract critical feature information is improved. The results show that the proposed method can adaptively extract the fault characteristics of a marine centrifugal fan. While the model is lightweight, the overall diagnostic accuracy can reach 99.3%. As exploratory basic research, this method can provide a reference for intelligent fault diagnosis systems on ships.

This paper presents the results of experimental research focused on wave energy harvesting and its conversion to power Internet of Things (IoT) devices. The harvesting and conversion process was performed using a wave energy converter (WEC) consisting of a lead zirconate titanate piezoelectric ceramic perovskite material and a prototype power electronic circuit. The designed WEC was considered as a power supply for an end node device (END) of an IoT network. The END consisted of a long-range radio module and an electronic paper display. A set of physical experiments were carried out, and the results confirmed that an energy surplus was supplied by WEC compared to the energy consumed by the END. Hence, the proposed scheme was experimentally validated as a convenient solution that could enable the autonomous operation of an IoT device. The use case presented here for the proposed WEC was analysed for selected sea areas on the basis of wave statistics. The novelty of this paper arises from an investigation that confirms that WECs can significantly contribute to the development of wireless and mobile IoT communication powered by freely available sea wave energy.

Opis:
Modernisation of marine power plants in the transport vessel fleet to satisfy the requirements of the International Maritime Organization is an urgent scientific and technical problem. Currently, the use of catalytic selective filters, dry and wet scrubber systems and exhaust gas recirculation for marine diesel engines is widely used for this purpose. An analysis of the use of ejection gas-air coolers is presented as an additional method of emission reduction. However, the use of such device does not neutralise the harmful emissions of power plant engines, but only increases the volume concentration of their exhaust gases. But this will help to increase the efficiency of dispersion of harmful emissions, by reducing the concentration of harmful emissions to values not exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations. Its efficiency depends on the load mode of the diesel engine. It is found that the initial concentration of harmful substances in combustion products due to their dilution with fresh air at 100% engine load is reduced by about 50%. The values of the reduction of the concentration and temperature of exhaust gases with the reduction of the engine load to 75% and 50% depending on the louvre angle are obtained. It is proved that ejection gas-air coolers can be an effective additional means for compliance with modern environmental parameters, especially when vessels are in special areas of the world’s oceans.

The article presents a continuation of research carried out to determine the effect of input parameters (changes in engine structure parameters) on selected output parameters (diagnostic measures), based on quickly changing exhaust gas temperature. A method of determining the simultaneous influence of two input factors (the structure parameter and the engine load) on one output factor was presented, as well as an evaluation of which of the analysed input factors has a stronger influence on the output parameter. The article presents the stages of the experimental research conducted and statistical inference based on the results. Three changing parameters for the structure were reviewed: the active cross-sectional area of the inlet air channel, the injector opening pressure and the compression ratio. Based on the quickly changing temperatures of the exhaust gases, three diagnostic measures were defined and subjected to statistical tests. The following data were averaged over one cycle for a 4-stroke engine operation: the intensity of changes, the specific enthalpy and the peak-to-peak value of the exhaust gas temperature. The results of the two-factor analysis are presented. Conclusions on the analysis are given and a criterion for the selection of a diagnostic measure, depending on the analysed parameter of the structural design of the diesel engine, is proposed. The previous part of the article presented the results of the first stage of the elimination study: the one-factor statistical analysis (randomised complete plan). This paper presents the results of the second stage of the studies: two-factor analysis (block randomised plan), where the significance of the effect of changing the values of the structural parameters on the diagnostic measures were analysed in the background of a variable engine load. The next (third) part will present the results of the calculations and analysis of the interaction coefficient of significance.

Opis:
The application of Digital Twins is a promising solution for enhancing the efficiency of marine power plant operation, particularly their important components – marine internal combustion engines (ICE). This work presents the concept of applying a Performance Digital Twin for monitoring the technical condition and diagnosing malfunctions of marine ICE, along with its implementation on an experimental test-bench, based on a marine diesel-generator. The main principles of implementing this concept involve data transmission technologies, from the sensors installed on the engine to a server. The Digital Twin, also operating on the server, is used to automatically process the acquired experimental data, accumulate statistics, determine the current technical state of the engine, identify possible malfunctions, and make decisions regarding changes in operating programs. The core element of the Digital Twin is a mathematical model of the marine diesel engine’s operating cycle. In its development, significant attention was devoted to refining the fuel combustion model, as the combustion processes significantly impact both the engine’s fuel efficiency and the level of toxic emissions of exhaust gases. The enhanced model differs from the base model, by considering the variable value of the average droplets’ diameter during fuel injection. This influence on fuel vapourisation, combustion, and the formation of toxic components is substantial, as shown. Using the example of calibrating the model to the test results of a diesel engine under 27 operating modes, it is demonstrated that the application of the improved combustion model allows better adjustment of the Digital Twin to experimental data, thus achieving a more accurate correspondence to a real engine.

Opis:
This paper presents a study of a viscous torsional vibration damper for a crankshaft of a four-stroke diesel engine. The reliable operation of a widely used silicone-type viscous damper depends on the ability of the silicone oil to absorb the energy of torsional vibrations. The non-Newtonian shear flow of the silicone oil interlayer, characterised by a reduction in the shear-rate-dependent viscosity and a moment of the drag forces, negatively affects damping characteristics. A torsional vibration damper, filled with a shear-thickening fluid, was considered and a rheological approach, based on viscosity growth with the shear rate increase, was applied. For such a damper, larger velocity gradients correspond to the higher values of a viscous force, which decreases torsional vibration. The parameter of damper effectiveness (defined by the fluid flow index, values of the damper gaps, torsional vibration amplitude and frequency) was implemented. It has been established that the efficiency of the torsional vibration damper filled with a dilatant fluid does not depend on the damper dimensions and gaps and significantly increases when a shear-thickening fluid is used instead of silicone oil or a Newtonian fluid. At higher values of the flow index, when the non-Newtonian flow becomes distinct, torsional vibrations are damped more effectively. Critical vibration amplitudes at high-velocity gradients, in turn, increase the damping effect as the moment of the drag forces and flow index are power-law related.
