Opis:
The article presents methods of macroalgae cultivation performed worldwide in marine waters (long-lines, bottom planting, integrated cultivation). It describes a variety of technical approaches and discusses the possibility of conducting macroalgae cultivation in the Polish marine areas. All the presented methods can be tested in the Polish zone of the Baltic Sea, except integrated mariculture (IMTA). Species of the Ulva genus can be considered for culturing, however there is a lack of wide-ranging studies providing information on their biomass production on a larger scale and detailed chemical content. The effectiveness of cultivation will be restricted due to seasonal occurrence of species, as the conditions prevailing in the Polish marine waters are not favourable to macroalgae cultivation. Thus, it is suggested to consider implementation of a project aiming at the cultivation of perennial species Furcellaria lumbricalis (introduction of the species from the Gulf of Riga to the Puck Bay).
W artykule zaprezentowano wybrane metody uprawy makroglonów w wodach morskich na świecie (uprawy linowe w toni wodnej, uprawy na dnie, uprawy zintegrowane). Opisano różnorodne podejścia techniczne i przeanalizowano możliwość uprawy makroglonów w polskich obszarach morskich.

The purpose and scope of this paper is to present the demand of Polish waters for the boat MoB MEDS the Mobile Base of the Marine Emergency Diving Service, which would enable necessary underwater works (repairs and inspections) for ships requiring immediate assistance. The MoB MEDS boat could also protect sensitive sea areas against potential oil and / or chemical spills from the ship, which could seriously threaten the safety of human life, the safety of navigation and the protection of the natural environment with its unique ecological values. Mentioned demand is supported by the analysis of selected statistical data on maritime accidents in Polish waters and planned maritime investments.

The heavy metal contamination has become a serious problem in the aquatic environment, including marine sediments. This study was aimed at analyzing the content of heavy metals in marine sediments, then assessing and evaluating the level of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risks. The sediment samples were taken using a grab sampler at six sites in the coastal waters of Mimika Regency, Indonesia. The TCLP testing method was used to determine the content of heavy metals in marine sediments. The results showed that the concentrations of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg in marine sediments ranged from <0.25 to 0.59 ppm, <0.02 to 0.54 ppm, <0.005 to 0.03 ppm, and < 0.0007 ppm. Only the concentrations of Cu on the Meoga and Puriri sites exceeded the quality standard in the Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 18 year 1999. The results of the assessment of heavy metal contamination and its ecological risk potential indicate that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are included in the category of low contamination and low ecological risks. The concentration of heavy metals in this study shows that the coastal waters of Mimika Regency are not contaminated by Pb, Cu, Cd, and Hg heavy metals.

A good water quality is essential to sustaining the life of the organisms. The determination of water quality is needed as a direction to monitoring the water pollution. The purpose of this study is to examine the quality of the water and to determine the water pollution index based on the physicochemical parameters in Mimika waters, Indonesia. The sampling of water quality was carried out in October 2016 at six stations (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga, Keakwa, Atuka and Pomako waters). Then, the results were compared with the standard of sea water quality for biota marine based on the Decree of the Minister of Environment No. 51 year 2004. This study showed that the physicochemical parameters of the waters, such as water turbidity, BOD, NH3 and heavy metals (Hg, As, Cd, Pb, Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr), are still appropriate to the biota marine in all study stations. However, there is a parameter for which the quality standards were exceed in all locations, including water salinity for coral and seagrass, NO3, PO4 and H2S. The result of pollution index calculation at coastal waters Mimika are classified as lightly polluted (Keakwa and Pomako waters), and moderately polluted (Moga, Puriri, Inaoga and Atuka waters) with the pollution index values of 3.51 to 6.95. It is important to notice that the parameters of quality standards which had been exceed such as NO3, PO4 and H2S are the environmental parameter for nutrient elements and can trigger eutrophication in the waters.

Dissolved and particulate activities of caesium-137 are presented for the coastal and open southern Baltic Sea waters, fluvial waters (the Vistula and Swina rivers) and lagoon waters (the Vistula Lagoon) during 1996-1999 and compared to those collected before the Chernobyl accident. 137Cs was measured in the Baltic Sea waters at different depths as well as 0.2-0.3 m above the sea bed. In a layer of the Gdafsk Bay waters (the Gdafsk Deep location), extending from the surface down to 1-2 meters above the sea bed, the caesium-137 concentrations ranged between 57 and 66 Bq m-3 in 1999, whereas in the layer situated 0.2-0.3 m above the sea bed its concentration increased up to 87 Bq m-3. This phenomenon was also observed in 1994 and 1998. The concentrations of caesium-137 in riverine suspended particulate matter (r SPM) are lower than in the marine SMP (m SMP) and its activity attains respectively 36 and 222 Bq kg-1 based on dry weight. The proportion of caesium-137 in the suspended form in the Baltic Sea waters does not exceed 2 per cent, while in the fluvial suspended form it is as high as 55 per cent.

A dense bloom of Protoperidinium steinii was observed in the backwaters adjoining the western Bay of Bengal, Kalpakkam coast, which might be the first report for the world oceans. The brownish-red bloom appeared on 2 October 2019, and it was monitored on alternate days up to 14 October. Surface water temperature was about 27.5°C and salinity was <17 PSU during the bloom. Dissolved inorganic nutrients like nitrate, ammonia, silicate, and phosphate were extremely high compared to that of the coastal waters. The chlorophyll-a maxima (20.95 mg m−3) coincided with the highest Protoperidinium density (113.9 × 104 cells l −1). The contribution of P. steinii ranged from 17−93% of the total phytoplankton population. Since P. steinii is a heterotroph and voracious grazer, low autotroph density was observed during the bloom. No mass mortality of fish or other organisms was observed, thereby indicating the nontoxic nature of the bloom

Opis:
Silicon is a major nutrient for siliceous primary producers, which can become a potential limiting nutrient in oligotrophic areas. Most of the silicon inputs to the marine environment come from continental discharges, from both superficial and ground waters. This study analyses the main sources of silicon and their dynamics along the southernmost 43 km of shoreline in the Gulf of Valencia (Western Mediterranean Sea). The salinity and silicate concentration in the different compartments (springs, freshwater wells, beach groundwater, surf zone and coastal waters) in this coastal area were determined. In addition, chlorophyll a and phytoplankton community were analyzed in the surf zone and coastal waters. Silicate concentrations in freshwater wells ranged between 130 and 150 μM, whereas concentrations of this nutrient declined to 49 μM in freshwater–seawater mixture transects. At the same time, there was a positive gradient in silicate for both freshwater and coastal waters southward. An amount of 18.7 t of dissolved silicate was estimated in the nearest first kilometre nearest to the coastline, 6 t of this silicate belonged to the background sea level. On the other hand, the sum of the main rivers in the area supplies 1.6 t of dissolved silicate per day. This implies that a large amount of the remaining 11.1 t must derive from submarine groundwater discharges, which would thus represent 59% of the coastal dissolved silicate budget. Overall, it is suggested that a subterranean transport pathway must contribute considerably to silicate concentrations throughout this zone, which is characterized as permeable.

Opis:
Lake Saimaa is the largest lake in Finland and the Saimaa inland waterway network is one of the main transport corridors for merchant shipping. The Saimaa inland watercourse is a challenging operating environment due to shallow waters, narrowness of the fairways, fast currents as well as the sensitiveness of the environment. It is recognised that the heavy vessel traffic poses a risk of oil pollution. An oil spill incident in inland waters has a high potential for contaminating shorelines and affecting populated areas. Responding to such an incident involves several governmental and regional authorities, agencies and voluntary organisations. Inter-agency coordination is considered a key element in incident management. Several exercise types can be used to train multi-agency collaboration in joint response operations. This paper analyses the benefits of tabletop exercises in the strengthening of joint preparedness and contingency planning. Paper compares the outcomes of discussion-based exercises with operations-based drills and full-scale exercises. The analysis is based on four oil spill response tabletop exercises and five oil response drills conducted in Saimaa region in 2017–2018. Different types of exercises make it possible to focus on different aspects of the response operation. Operations-based exercises are useful in improving technical skills and testing procedures and the functioning of the equipment. Due to time restrictions, the equipment deployment drills usually focus on a specific function or a single task. Tabletop exercises can be used to assess contingency plans on a strategic level. Tabletop exercises offer an opportunity to clarify roles and responsibilities, discuss priorities and establish inter-agency agreements. The advantages of tabletop exercises include their flexibility in scenario-building, low-cost implementation and the possibility to study a longer time span in order to gain a more holistic view of the response operation.

Opis:
Results of the 5-years cycle (2004-2008) monitoring investigations on food contamination with elements noxious to human health, involving testing of mineral waters and soft drinks (226 samples), fruits (467 samples ), rice (234 samples), soybeans (236 samples), nuts and peanuts (237 samples), fish and seafood (237 samples) are discussed. The parties involved in testing were: laboratories of State Sanitary Inspection and the national reference laboratory of the Department of Food and Consumer Articles Research of National Institute of Public Health - National Institute of Hygiene. The reported metals contents did not give rise to health concerns, remaining generally below the levels set forth in food legislation and being comparable with contamination levels reported in other European countries; and for cadmium - often lower. Health hazard assessment was performed taking into account the mean contamination levels obtained and average domestic consumption of these food products groups in Poland. The highest intake expressed as the percentage of provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) was obtainedfor mercury in fish, which has reached mean 3,2% PTWI. Controlled fish consumption recommendations should be adhered to by prospective mothers, pregnant women, breast-feeding women and young children. Lead and arsenic intake with mineral waters and soft drinks comprises approx. 15%) of total intake of these elements with food.

Opis:
A new species of a non-marine microconchid (Tentaculita) tubeworm, Microconchus hintonensis, from the Lower Carboniferous (Upper Mississippian, Chesterian) of West Virginia, USA, is described. Non-marine microconchids occur abundantly in the deposits of the Bluefield, lower Hinton, Princeton and Bluestone Formations of the Mauch Chunk Group, where they are either associated with land plant remains and bivalve shells, or are preserved loose in the host sediment. The specimens attached to plant remains and bivalve shells, are poorly preserved, but those occurring loose in the deposits are well-preserved in three dimensions. The interpretation pre sented here, is that the loose specimens of Microconchus hintonensis sp. nov. also originally encrusted plants (land plants, algae) and bivalve shells, but became detached after substrate degradation and dissolution. The association of land plant remains, charophyte gyrogonites, bivalves, ostracodes, conchostracans, and fish teeth and scales, and the concomitant lack of strictly marine fossils indicate that the microconchid-bearing deposits of the lower Hinton, Princeton and Bluestone Formations were deposited in fresh-water environments. Microconchus hintonensis sp. nov. is regarded as a highly fecund, opportunistic species that in large numbers colonized every available substrate in its habitat. Its abundance in the deposits investigated indicates that the species was welladapted to the environments it occupied, even during episodes of higher sedimentation rates and/or competition with other soft-bodied encrusters. During such episodes, microconchids were able to grow vertically by uncoiling and elevating their tubes, in order to escape potential burial and/or overgrowth by other encrusters.

Opis:
Poziom zanieczyszczeń środowiska morskiego, a szczególnie obszarów mórz wewnętrznych, wymusił poszukiwanie bardziej skutecznych technik i technologii ograniczenia zanieczyszczeń generowanych przez statki.
The pollution level of the marine environment, landlocked seas in particular, has made it necessary to search for more effective techniques and technologies of limiting pollution generated by ships. Further elimination of oil pollution in dumping waters has been focused on in the recent period. Oil dumped in bilge waters is estimated to have a significant 20% share in the total amount of oil getting into the seas. This fact settles the issue of the important role bilge water separators on ships. The content of oil pollution in dumping waters can be restricted to even below 5 ppm, supporting traditional deoiling systems with ultrafiltration techniques. On the basis of research conducted, possibilities of restricting pollution in depending waters have been shown, depending on the kind of membranes applied.

Opis:
The subject of this article is the issue of legal protection of marine water against pollution. Due to the limited scope of the study, only the legal solutions of the administrative liability concerning protection of marine waters against pollution from vessels have been considered. There is no doubt that the degradation of the marine environment is a global problem that often causes irreparable harm to the environment. In the article, there were presented considerations regarding the administrative guarantee of protection of marine waters against pollution from ships. First of all, the concept of administrative liability and its types in environmental protection have been considered. After scrutinizing legal regulations in this range, three basic tools of liability for sea pollution taken by legal enitities have been thoroughly analyzed: the administrative fines imposed on shipowners, the administrative fines imposed on other entities and the revocation of the decision in the range of testing emission reduction methods. Next, the legal regulations concerning the administrative responsibility related to the pollution of sea waters have been assessed.
