Opis:
The paper presents stress-strain characteristics recorded during the four-step compression of axisymmetric samples in the Gleeble thermomechanical simulator. The hot deformability of three steels with Mn concentrations of 3%, 4% and 5% was compared. The analysis of the influence of plastic deformation and Mn content on the microstructure of alloys, and in particular, on a fraction and morphological features of the retained austenite, was performed. The proportion of the retained austenite was determined by the X-ray diffraction method. It was found that the content of Mn in the range from 3% to 5% does not have a significant impact on the high-temperature resistance of the steel during compression tests, but it has a significant influence on the microstructure of the steel and the fraction of retained austenite. The optimal conditions for maximizing the proportion of retained austenite were obtained at the temperature of 400 °C, and it decreased with increasing Mn concentration in the steel. It has been shown that it is related to the redistribution of carbon from the remaining austenite fraction with an increase in the manganese content. The mechanical properties were determined on the basis of hardness measurements.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the investigations performed on high manganese austenitic steel which underwent the test of uniaxial tension, with the application of electric current impulses. The application of low voltage impulse alternating current of high intensity during the plastic deformation of the examined steel caused the occurrence of the electroplastic effect, which changed the shape of the stress-strain curve. A drop of flow stress and elongation of the tested material was observed in the case of the application of electric current impulses, in respect of the material stretched without such impulses and stretched at an elevated temperature. The analysis of the morphology of the fractures showed differences between the samples tested under the particular conditions. An analysis of the alloy’s microstructure was also performed under different conditions. The application of electric current impulses can have a significant influence on the reduction of the forces in the plastic forming processes for this type of steel.

Opis:
The results of the modification of austenitic matrix in cast high-manganese steel containing 11÷19% Mn with additions of Cr, Ni and Ti were discussed. The introduction of carbide-forming alloying elements to this cast steel leads to the formation in matrix of stable complex carbide phases, which effectively increase the abrasive wear resistance in a mixture of SiC and water. The starting material used in tests was a cast Hadfield steel containing 11% Mn and 1.34% C. The results presented in the article show significant improvement in abrasive wear resistance and hardness owing to the structure modification with additions of Cr and Ti.

Opis:
Hydroponic production of leafy vegetables sustains consumption of fresh produce all year round. However, cultivation of leafy vegetables in a growing medium prepared from water contaminated with trace elements, particularly manganese (Mn), may affect both the plant products and their consumers. Therefore, an attempt was made in the present study to evaluate the effect of treating two cultivars of lettuce (cv. Locarno and cv. Satine) with Mn (0.5 – control, 5, 25 and 50 mg dm-3) on (i) the concentration of Mn and other elements, (ii) biomass accumulation, (iii) the efficiency of the photosynthetic apparatus, (iv) the levels of ROS (reactive oxygen species), (v) the activity of antioxidative enzymes, and (vi) the content of phenolic compounds. Increased concentrations of Mn in the growing medium led to a significantly higher concentration of this element in lettuce leaves (up to a 9.4-fold increase), but concentrations of potassium, calcium and magnesium were almost unchanged. Although the intensity of photosynthesis was lower in both of the examined cultivars, biomass accumulation was slightly reduced only in cv. Locarno. The recorded toxic effect of Mn most probably resulted from the induced generation of ROS, levels of which usually increase albeit insignificantly in plants treated with the tested metal. Higher generation of ROS was to some extent counteracted by the increased activity of antioxidative enzymes (ascorbate peroxidase and catalase) and a higher content of phenolic compounds. The results of this study demonstrate that increased accumulation of Mn in lettuce not only impairs the plant growth, but may also pose a risk to human health, as these plant products may become dietary sources of Mn and elevated levels of ROS.

Opis:
Manganese (Mn) is a microelement, but it is also a heavy metal whose excess may have a toxic effect on plants. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of an application of increasing Mn concentrations added to a nutrient solution on the content of macro- and mi- cronutrients in tomato leaves (Lycopersicon esculentum Mili., cv. Alboney F4 and Emotion F,). Plants were grown in rockwool using a nutrient solution with the following content of manganese (mg dm'3): 0.06; 0.3; 0.6; 1.2 (experiment I, in 2008-2011); 2.4, 4.8; 9.6; 19.2 mg dm3 (expe- riment II, in 2012) - designated the symbols Mn-0; Mn-0.3; Mn-0.6; Mn-1.2; Mn-2.4; Mn-4.8; Mn-9.6; Mn-19.2. The nutrient solution used for plant fertigation had the following Chemical composition (mg dm'3): N-N'H4 2.2, N-N03 230, P 50, K 430, Ca 145, Mg 65, Cl 35, S-SO, 120, Fe 2.48, Zn 0.50, Cu 0.07, pH 5.50, EC 3.00 mS cm1. Manganese significantly influenced the content of other macro- and microelements in leaves. In variant Mn-0, the content of N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Mn decreased, while that of of Fe, Zn, Cu was higher; in Mn-1.2, the content of N, Mg, Fe, Zn decreased and that of P, K, Ca, Mn increased compared with the variants which ensured optimal yielding. In the rangę of manganese nutrition from Mn-4.8 to Mn-19.2, N, K, Mg, Fe, Zn, Cu were lower and the content of P and Mn was higher (above optimal). The cultivar significantly modified the nutrient status of plants concerning nitrogen (for Mn-9.6 and Mn-19.2), pho- sphorus (for Mn-1.2 and Mn-2.4), potassium (for Mn-4.8 and Mn-9.6), calcium (for Mn-0, Mn-1.2, Mn-9.6), magnesium (Mn-0 and Mn-0.6), iron (Mn-0, Mn-0.3, Mn-9.6), manganese (Mn-0.3, Mn- 1.2, Mn-2.4, Mn-19.2), iron (Mn-0, Mn-0.3, Mn-9.6), zinc (Mn-0.6, Mn-1.2, Mn-2.4, Mn-9.6) and copper (Mn-2.4, Mn-4.8, Mn-9.6, Mn-19.2). Briefly, both deficit or excess manganese nutrition could induce disorders in the uptake of other nutrients, which may influence plant yielding.

Opis:
In this study, the effect of MnCl2 on scheelite flotation with sodium oleate (NaOL) as a collector and sodium silicate as a depressant was assessed by a combination of flotation experiments, Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and solution chemistry. The flotation experiments confirmed that the addition of MnCl2 before sodium silicate showed an adverse effect on flotation and the recovery of scheelite gradually decreased as the amount of MnCl2 was increased. When MnCl2 was added afte r sodium silicate, the recovery of scheelite gradually increased with an increase in the amount of MnCl2. The results of FTIR, XPS, and solution chemistry indicated that MnCl2 acted on the surface of scheelite in the form of manganese ions. When MnCl2 was added before sodium silicate, manganese ions adsorbed on the surface of scheelite reacted with sodium silicate to form a hydrophilic silicate, which covers the surface of scheelite and blocks the adsorption of NaOL. However, when MnCl2 was added after sodium silicate, manganese ions are continued to be adsorbed on the surface of scheelite, which increases the cations on the surface of scheelite, and hence the condition becomes conducive for the interaction between scheelite and NaOL.

Opis:
The presented access the influence of Mn content (0-0.94 wt.%) on the course of the cooling curves, phase transformation, macrostructure, and microstructure of Al-Cu alloys for three series: initial (Series I), with the addition of an AlTi master (Series II), and modified with AlTi5B1 (Series III). The maximum degree of undercooling ΔT was determined based on the cooling curves. The surface density of the grains (NA ) was determined and associated with the inverse of solidification interval 1/ΔTk . Titanium (contained in the charge materials as well as the modifier) has a significant effect on the grinding of the primary grains in the tested alloys. A DSC thermal analysis allowed for the determination of phase transition temperatures under conditions close to equilibrium. For series II and III, the number of grains decreases above 0.2 wt.% Mn with a simultaneous increase in solidification interval 1/ΔT2 . The presence of Al2 Cu eutectics as well as the Cu-, Fe-, and Mn-containing phases in the examined samples was demonstrated using scanning electron microscopy.

Opis:
This article is the effect of industrial work and many surveys in the one of the Polish foundries that specialize in aluminum alloys. The main goal of our explorations is to evaluate the influence of manganese on Al-Si alloy properties. In die-cast alloys, it is recommended to use larger amounts of iron to reduce the impact on the pressure chamber and mold. Manganese neutralizes the harmful effect of iron by changing the morphology of the separated brittle ferrous phases. The unfavorable form of the iron-containing phases in the form of long needles changes into the forms of fine compact crystals, which are less harmful to the mechanical properties. Nowadays, the main client requirement is to obtain the right parameters at the best price. Specifically, the customer is in the automotive industry, where new technologies provide a connection between the high quality and low weight of car parts [1–3].

On the other hand, a significant reduction in the eutectoid transformation temperature with increasing manganese concentration has been shown. The effect of manganese on microstructure of cast iron with compacted graphite considering casting wall thickness was investigated and described. The nomograms describing the microstructure of compacted graphite iron versus manganese concentration were developed. The effect of manganese on the hardness of cast iron and microhardness of ferrite and pearlite were given.

Iron is presented as an impurity in Al-Si alloys and occurs in the form of the β-Al5FeSi phase formations. The presence of iron and other elements in the alloy causes the formation of large intermetallic phases. Due to the high brittleness of this phase, it reduces the mechanical properties and increases the porosity. Manganese is used to inhibit the formation of this detrimental phase. It changes the morphology of the phase to polyhedral crystals, skeletal formations, or Chinese script. The present article deals with the influence of various amounts of manganese (0.1; 0.2; 0.4; 0.6 wt. %) on the formation of iron-based intermetallic phases in the AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy with different levels of iron content (0.4; 0.8, 1.2 wt. %). The increase of iron content in each alloy caused the creation of more intermetallic compounds and this effect has been more significant with higher concentrations of manganese. In alloys where the amount of 1.2 wt. % iron is present, the shape of eutectic silicon grain changes from angular to short needle type.

Opis:
Teprosyn Mn manganese seed treatment, manufactured by a British firm Phosyn Chemicals Ltd., which was tested in the experiment, has been available on the Polish market for several years. Applied as a seed treatment it results in more intensive development of root system and improves general plant condition. However, in the available literature lacks information on Teprosyn Mn effect on plant healthiness or pathogenic organisms. The aim of the paper was to compare the effect of Teprosyn Mn fertilizer and Raxil Gel 206 chemical seed treatment on pathogenic fungi species: Fusarium culmorum (W.G. Smith) Sacc., Fusarium poae (Peck) Wollen., Fusarium avenaceum (Fr.) Sacc., Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc. in Sorok.) Shoem. and Botrytis cinerea Pers. In laboratory conditions the dynamics of growth and sporulation of the above mentioned fungi were assessed on PDA medium with a supplement of 0.1; 0.5 and 1.0 mm3 · cm–3 of Teprosyn Mn and 0.005; 0.05 and 0.5 mm3 · cm–3 of Raxil Gel 206. In vitro Teprosyn Mn manganese fertilizer reveals weak and diversified effect on linear growth of the studied phytopathogens. In the highest concentration (1.0 mm3 · cm–3) it reduces the growth of Fusarium avenaceum, Botrytis cinerea and Fusarium poae colonies on the level of 7.3–10.1 %, whereas all its concentrations inhibit the sporulation process in B. cinerea i F. avenaceum from 35.3 % to 66 %. Along with increasing concentration in the medium its stimulating effect on linear growth of Bipolaris sorokiniana raises (5.7–18.3 %) and the spore number increases from 40 to 271.5 %.
Smith) Sacc., Fusarium poae (Peck) Wollen., Fusarium avenaceum (Fr.) Sacc., Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sacc. in Sorok.) Shśm. i Botrytis cinerea Pers. Nawóz manganowy Teprosyn Mn w warunkach in vitro wykazuje słabe i zróżnicowane oddziaływanie na rozrost liniowy badanych fitopatogenów. W największym stężeniu (1.0 mm3 · cm–3) ogranicza o 7,3 do 10,1 % rozrost kolonii: Fusarium avenaceum, Botrytis cinerea i Fusarium poae.
