Opis:
The large number of words from Arabic found in modern Spanish is proof of the deep influence Arabic has had on the Spanish language. Historical sociolinguistic processes which have lasted to the present day indicate that the influence of Arabic culture has been neither brief or superficial. Instead, it has, and continues to have great significance for the language situation of Spain. Much linguistic research has shown how loans from Arabic have been assimilated as they have become part of the lexical resources of modern Spanish. Arabic culture and civilization in the Iberian Peninsula (711-1942) above all involved the sciences, literature, art, architecture, engineering, agriculture, the military, medicine. At that time, Al-Andalus was one of the most influential European centers of science and cultural exchange in Europe. Contacts between Arabic and the Romance languages found in the Iberian Peninsula resulted in numerous loans both from Arabic to the Romance languages and from the Romance languages to Arabic. These topics have been the subject of extensive research conducted from historical, cultural and linguistic points of view. Despite the existence of numerous works concerning Arabic loans, this area requires, further, deeper research. In this article, selected issues concerning Arabic loans in Spanish are analyzed as are the adaptive processes they have undergone and the level of their integration into Spanish. The basis of the analysis is made up of oral and written texts collected in the Corpus de Español del Siglo XXI [CORPES XXI, RAE] – a corpus of contemporary Spanish from the 21st century.

Opis:
The impact of the Polish language on the English lexical fabric, although unimpressive, is worth noticing. However, thus far it has not been a source of interest of many scholars. The present paper aims at discussing Polish loanwords that have found their way into the English language; this is done by means of collecting alleged loanwords from an array of sources (dictionaries, subject literature, and the Internet) which are later verified against, inter alia, such etymological dictionaries as the Oxford English Dictionary. Next, in order to assess their scale of use, selected items are checked in a number of corpora available online. The research concludes that there are 33 direct borrowings from the Polish language (belonging to 8 semantic categories) present in English, and nearly half of them are yet unattested in the OED.

The sociolinguistic context of prolonged language contact in contemporary Kenya should lead to a certain amount of influence of the languages on one another, e.g. through loanwords. The main aim of the present paper was to examine English in Kenya to show what kind of words are borrowed from African languages and their analysis within the framework of the borrowing theories formulated in Tappolet (1913–16), Haugen (1950), Weinreich (1953), Dardano – Trifone (1995), Hock – Joseph (1996), Krefeld (1999) and McColl-Millar (2007). The data for this study come from the International corpus of English for East Africa (ICE-EA).

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of 140 random lexemes of Greek and Latin origin excerpted from Słownik kieszonkowy polsko-rosyjski i rosyjsko-polski [Pocket Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish Dictionary] edited by I. Mitronova, G. Sinicyna and G. Lipkes. The corpus is, according to lexicographers and linguists, an effect of mutual influences of Polish and Russian languages. The opinions on origins of words differ among researchers, and the article attempts to verify the previously accepted judgements by M. Vasmer, W. Witkowski and Z. Rysiewicz, based on informations included in monographs by D. Moszyńska, H. Leeming, S. Kochman, and in historical dictionaries of both languages. With reference to almost 75% of the analysed material, the direction of loanword acquisition proposed by Vasmer, Witkowski and Rysiewicz has been confirmed. However, for about a quarter of the random sample of words, the accepted opinion is not confirmed by more recent historical dictionaries, nor by the lexical material provided in the monographs. The article proposes new results for the direction of loanword migration in this group of vocabulary.

Pashto (Pakhto), called also Afghan, from the East-Iranian languages group, is spoken by Pashtuns living in Afghanistan and Pakistan. In Afghanistan it is, along with Persian from the West-Iranian languages group, one of two official languages. The position of these two languages in Afghanistan was and remains different. Persian is the language of the city, of many ethnic and social groups like craftsmen and it was the language of the Court, belles-lettres and high culture. Pashto, by contrast, spoken by one ethnic group - Pashtuns - is the language of shepherds, wanderers, warriors. These two languages, describing two realities, have nevertheless shared some elements of their lexical (though rarely grammatical) variety, and in so doing have helped Afghans to depict their world. The main aim of this paper is to present the place and character of some Persian loanwords and calques in Pashto. This very interesting issue has been largely neglected. The article has four major sections: the introduction (0) places the role of Pashto in Afghanistan, past and present; the first part (1) describes the aim of article, Pashto and Persian transcription rules, some loanwords phonetic changes, and the matter of loanwords grammatical gender in Pashto; the second part (2) discusses lexical loanwords (divided into sixteen groups) and grammatical one (prefix, suffixes, compounds elements etc.); the third part (3) looks at some calques. The last part (4) draws some conclusions about the linguistic material under examination.

This study revisits Russian loanwords in the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary (henceforth, OED3) in order to discuss their lexicographic treatment, including the quality of etymological references. Arguments behind the choice of this dictionary are clear-cut: not only is OED3 the most exhaustive dictionary of English, but it also offers the fullest etymological analysis of the whole of the lexis of English available anywhere. Space restrictions preclude the inclusion in the dictionary every word of Russian origin in English texts. In the past, lexical items had to occur in at least five different sources to ensure inclusion, whereas the frequency necessary to include a word into OED3 today is reckoned in hundreds or even thousands.

Opis:
The complicated orthography of Sanskrit and Pali loanwords in Khmer language poses a significant didactical obstacle, as the standard rules of Khmer orthography are irrelevant to those words. After a brief historical introduction, the relations between Sanskrit and Sanskrit > Khmer loanwords’ orthography are explained. Further on, a preliminary classification of Indic loanwords is provided, based on their morphological status and patterns of usage. The most important inference is that a relatively small number of immutable borrowings occurs in most frequently used compounds of Sanskrit and Pali origins. This approach yields two potential solutions to the aforementioned problem. Firstly, a learner of Khmer should study the basics of Sanskrit and Pali orthography and phonology, as they have a tremendous impact on the way borrowings are spelled. Secondly, the learner should note that many Indic loanwords in Khmer are in fact compounds, and observe the distribution patterns of their individual constituents.

Görlach's (2003) claim is that modern anglicisms do not assimilate in European languages on the morphological level, by contrast, it is claimed and proved here that in most cases they are adapted, which means that nouns are firstly assigned the grammatical gender and then declined accordingly in most of the investigated sixteen European languages, and that in the majority of tongues nouns take the native marker of plurality. Görlach is right only in suggesting that compound and complex words are not assimilated since they are treated as simple words. Other parts of speech, which are far less often borrowed, are assimilated to a lesser extent, which is in large part due to their low frequency.

The literary style is dominated by Hungarian, Slovakian, Germanisms, Romanian, and in the artistic style (mainly in folksongs (przyśpiewki)) Anglicisms appear. Colloquial style in terms of loanwords is the least expressive, old loanwords belong to the recessive vocabulary, and Anglicisms do not have such a punching force as in joking and ironic folksongs.

The following article primarily deals with the notion of lexical borrowing. It particularly emphasizes the process of adopting English loanwords by Polish teenagers who in this way reflect their views, beliefs and feelings as well as accentuate their sense of belonging and their presence in the society. Apart from encapsulating opinions and observations of scholars on this subject, the article provides an extensive amount of empirical data which comes from the survey conducted among young Poles in March 2007. This data is presented by the author with the aim of issuing a list of English loanwords commonly adopted by Polish teenagers for whom these words function as an important part of their daily communication. The use of these items is exemplified in the article by various sentences which were quoted by teenagers participating in the research. The sentences in fact illustrate how foreign units are incorporated to the Polish system and in what social contexts they are applied by the youth. An analysis of the data is also carried out here to assist the author in classifying English loanwords into certain semantic fields and in distinguishing and comparing the codes developed by boys and girls at the gymnasium and secondary school level. The article in the final part enumerates the reasons for adopting English words teenagers and discusses the most influential channels by means of which the transmission of lexical borrowings takes place.

Opis:
The article is an attempt at an initiatory, quantitative and semantic verification of Italian loanwords in the field of medicine and related sciences in the contemporary Polish language. In the introductory part, the aim and the methodology adopted in the research are described. The criteria for identifying loanwords depend on the assumed research perspective: for one-sided research, a loanword from Italian may be considered both a lexeme of Italian origin adopted into the Polish language and a lexeme of any other origin, provided that it was borrowed into Polish via Italian (e.g. the word gabinet). In the case of contrastive research, on the other hand, only a lexeme of Italian origin can be considered as an Italian loanword (an Italianism), regardless of the language through which it came into the Polish language (e.g. the lexeme malaria). The further part of the article is an analytical segment devoted entirely to Italianisms present in Polish medical terminology. In this part, the initial corpus was analysed in order to preparatively verify the number of Italianisms occurring in Polish medical terminology. Then, the separated target research corpus was subjected to a qualitative analysis. The analysis confirmed that – taking into account the requirement of Italian origin – the number of Italianisms in Polish medical terminology is lower than what is shown in the sources consulted.

Opis:
Thanks to the arrangements of the 19th century historical linguistics, the consanguinity of the Romance and Slavic languages is nowadays unquestionable, although one can acknowledge that the French and Polish languages remain rather far cousins. It could be a long dispute when grammatical differences are considered – from phonologic, through morphologic, to syntactic. Due to its complicated grammar, French vocabulary seems to a Polish person much more intelligible, which results from specific (however far from being identical) connection of both languages to Latin, as well as from French and Polish historical contacts. Especially those, for centuries, gave an opportunity for many loanwords from French to appear in the Polish language. Due to the fact of permanent evolution of languages, the fate of a loanword is never predestinated: from the semantic perspective it may remain a faithful equivalent of the word from which it originates or it may change its meaning, sometimes even in a radical way. In my article, concerning the phenomenon of faux amis, that is loanwords, which meanings have strongly changed, I discern the route and the way of assimilation of some of these words in the Polish language, showing that in such a delicate matter as language borrowings it is needed to study each case, to some extent individually.
