Opis:
“Life-writing”, manifesting itself in the extremely personal character of the composition, is one of the most important features of Aleksander Nowak’s work, which clearly distinguish him from other composers. “Life-writing” conceals such creative inspirations as the methods and means of composing. Nowak very often draws topics or sound material of the composition from his own life experiences. At the same time, he hopes to achieve a certain type of energy or emotions, which will then to evoke the feelings that are similar to those accompanying the writing of the piece. The issue of conveying in the work any or more specific, though significant, emotions is therefore the first-rate issue. For this reason, in his works, the musical tradition is often combined with the popular and well-known music. A specific representation of the idea of “life-writing” are Nowak’s operas: Sudden Rain for soprano, baritone, mixed choir and chamber orchestra and two-act Space Opera for soprano, mezzo-soprano, countertenor, baritone, bass, mixed choir and symphonic orchestra.

Paul Ricoeur declares that “being-entangled in stories” is an inherent property of the human condition. He introduces the notion of narrative identity-a form of identity constructed on the basis of a self-constructed life-narrative, which becomes a source of meaning and self-understanding. This article wishes to present chosen instances of life writing whose subjects resist yielding a life-story and reject the notions of narrative and identity. In line with Adam Phillips’s remarks regarding Roland Barthes by Roland Barthes (1975), such works-which I refer to as fragmentary life writing-emerge out of a profound scepticism about any form of “fixing” oneself and confining the variety and randomness of experience to one of the available autobiographical plots. The primary example of the genre is Joe Brainard’s I Remember (1975)-an inventory of approximately 1,500 memories conveyed in the form of radically short passages beginning with the words “I remember.” Despite the qualified degree of unity provided by the fact that all the recollections come from the consciousness of a single person, the book does not arrange its content in any discernible order-chronological or thematic; instead, the reader is confronted with a life-in-fragments. Although individual passages could be part of a coming-of-age, a coming-out or a portrait-of-the-artist-as-a-young-man narrative, Brainard is careful not to let any of them consolidate. An attempt at defining the characteristics of the proposed genre will be followed by an indication of more recent examples of fragmentary life writing and a reflection on its prospects for development

For centuries, Western culture (mis)represented and appropriated the First Nations. Aboriginal peoples were regarded either as primitive, animal-like savages, or they were romanticised and eroticised in order to justify the Canadian policy of civilisation and assimilation of the natives into the monolithic “Britain of the North.” Even though since the time of the signing of the Multiculturalism Act, the concept of Canadian identity has been undergoing major changes embracing racial and cultural minorities, native people still have to fight for recognition and their rightful place in the Canadian discourses. The problem of misrepresentation of indigenous cultures has not been eradicated. This article focuses on the analysis of the potlatch ceremonies of the Kwakwaka’wakws. Using the postcolonial perspective and methodology, it explores both the past and the contemporary culture of potlatches. It also examines the colonial misconceptions of potlatch ceremonies and the current revival of the Kwakiutl potlatching. This postcolonial analysis shows the subversion of the colonial “truths” and looks at the revival of Kwakiutl culture as the aboriginal way of re-reading and re-writing of Canadian history, deconstructing conservative national mythologies and fighting for recognition by the Canadian discourse. The following analysis also reveals changing attitudes toward Kwakwaka’wakws’ potlatches and the evolution of opinions regarding this ceremony. The discussion is based mainly on selected published official government documents, books, life writing and information obtained from a personal interview gathered by the author during her research trip to British Columbia in March 2010 (Student Mobility grant obtained by the Canadian Studies Centre, University of Silesia). Artykuł stanowi analizę i wprowadzenie do zamieszczonego dalej tekstu Maxa Saundersa Autobiografikcja. Eksperymenty z życiopisaniem od przełomu wieków po modernizm. Autorka objaśnia pochodzenie i znaczenie tytułowego pojęcia autobiografikcji, a następnie przedstawia stanowisko Saundersa w debacie na ten temat. Poddawszy krytycznemu omówieniu najważniejsze konteksty tego mniej znanego w polskim dyskursie akademickim zagadnienia, przybliża w konkluzji wnioski Saundersa, który przekonuje, iż zjawisko zacierającej się granicy między faktem a fikcją w pisarstwie autobiograficznym należy datować nie na czasy najnowsze, lecz na znacznie wcześniejszy okres modernizmu.
The article is an analysis to Max Saunders’ research paper entitled „Autobiografiction: Experimental Life-Writing from the Turn of the Century to Modernism”. The Author explains the meaning and origins of the term „autobiografiction”, as well as introduces the Reader to Sunders’ approach to the matter. She also offers a commentary to this issue as well as to Saunders’ argument, that the process of blurrying the divide between fact and fiction in autobiography should be by far precedes the contemporary claims.

W badaniach naukowych wykorzystujących tradycyjne dokumenty osobiste zasadniczo stosuje się dwa podejścia: tzw. metodę biograficzną oraz metodę filologiczną. Badacz dziejów Żydów polskich odwołujący się do źródeł osobistych, napotykając na wiele trudności związanych z materialnym pozyskaniem i odczytaniem takich dokumentów, musi dodatkowo obrać jedną z metod i konsekwentnie oraz świadomie ją stosować, aby wykazać zasadność wyprowadzania na podstawie jednostkowych historii osobistych wniosków i generalizacji dotyczących epok, zjawisk, trendów kulturowych czy postaw całych grup społecznych. W artykule przypomniano zasady i zakres stosowania metody filologicznej w oparciu o kanoniczny model funkcji języka Karla Bühlera (das Organonmodell ) oraz przedstawiono kilka nowoczesnych narzędzi tekstologicznych i (pragma)lingwistycznych, które poszerzają granice tradycyjnie pojmowanej metody filologicznej, pozwalając na bardziej zobiektywizowaną interpretację dokumentu osobistego.
When using traditional life writing as source for scholarly research, one usually applies either the biographical or the philological method of analysis. For a researcher of the history of Polish Jews obtaining and deciphering such documents is already a challenging task; he or she should however choose and consciously apply just one of the above-mentioned methods in order to support any conclusions drawn from single life stories and any generalizations regarding the times, places, cultural phenomena and choices of the social groups in question. This paper describes the philological method’s principles and scope in relation to Karl Bühler’s classic Organon Model. It also presents several modern tools used in text linguistics and discourse analysis, all of which broaden the traditional understanding of the philological method thereby allowing a more objective interpretation of life writing practices.

The article examines how Maria Reimann’s autoethnographic book Nie przywitam się z państwem na ulicy: szkic o doświadczeniu niepełnosprawności (I Won’t Greet You in the Street: A Sketch about the Experience of Disability, 2019) addresses and problematizes such essential concepts for contemporary disability studies as: disability identity, coming out as disabled and, most importantly, disability community. It focuses on the way in which the book seeks to reconcile the seemingly contradictory and conflicting ideas about disability. It also argues that by deconstructing the disabled/non-disabled dichotomy, Reimann reinvents the idea of disability community, imagining it as a galaxy of individuals who can only find a sense of connection by recognizing the uniqueness and distinctiveness of another’s bodily and social experiences.

Migration always involves loss, which inspires potential writers and is itself often the focus of migrants’ narratives. Seen through this monodimensional attachment to things left behind and hence not particularly valued, written and unwri tten stories of migrants’ experiences are themselves prone to disappear, together with the memory of their authors. This paper exam-ines the work of a biographer and poet, Bogumiła Żongołłowicz, commited to recovering and preserving achievements of Polish post-war migrants in Australia, reclaiming forgotten or unappreciated literary works for future readers, and celebrating life and memory of those who would otherwise perish as well.

The paper examines the memoir The Book of My Lives by Bosnian-American writer Aleksandar Hemon. This non-fiction work explores the author’s childhood in the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina before the collapse of Yugoslavia, and then his exile experience in Canada and the United States after the outbreak of the war. Through the prism of memory, the book deals with the subject of exiles, uprootedness and efforts to start a new life in a new environment. Being an autobiographical record, The Book of My Lives lends itself to the examination of the issue of exile and memory issues, which is one of the two themes of this paper. The second concerns the understanding of the relationship between memory and space. The paper seeks to show how the spatial dimension is also important for the creation of memory because memories represent an essential factor for the transformation of abstract space into a particular place.

Artykuł porusza rozległy, a przy tym zaskakująco niedoinwestowany temat związków autobiografii i fikcji w okresie między rokiem 1880 a 1930. Jego istotą jest przeformułowanie poglądów na temat relacji między modernizmem i praktykami życiopisania. W tym celu Saunders przywołuje opublikowany w roku 1906 esej Stephena Reynoldsa, autora autobiograficznej książki A Poor Man’s House, w którym pojawia się pojęcie autobiografikcji, zaskakująco podobne do pojęć ze słownika ponowoczesnego. Saunders przygląda się rozumieniu tego terminu w czasach Reynoldsa i dowodzi jego przydatności, niedającej się sprowadzić jedynie do historycznego kontekstu jego powstania.
This essay approaches the large but surprisingly under-theorized topic of the relation between autobiography and fiction, concentrating on the period between 1880 and 1930, arguing for a new account of the relation between Modernism and life-writing. It introduces and analyses a key essay from 1906 by Stephen Reynolds, author of A Poor Man’s House, which, strikingly, coins the post-modern-sounding term ‘autobiografiction’. It argues that Reynolds’ central concept sheds light on the vexed theoretical question of the relation between autobiography and fiction, and in ways that reach further than either Reynolds or the essay’s few commentators have appreciated.

Relying on post-war biographies of Henryk Sienkiewicz, the article provides an insight into how his life as a writer was modelled through recurring similarities and differences of representation. Both factual and methodological portrayals seem uniform. In 1954 the biographical calendar presented by Julian Krzyżanowski became a point of reference for all following profiles of Sienkiewicz. Moreover, the biographers seem to utilize personal documents in a similar manner – they are to validate their stories. The resulting life writing appears to hold peculiar control over the protagonist’s life, suggesting that special-temporal distance allows us to see more than Sienkiewicz did himself.

The paper deals with a little-known translation of the Vulgate Psalter which was published anonymously in 1700 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye by the printer of the exiled court of King James VII of Scotland and II of England. The paper argues in favour of the originality of the translation in the face of the claim expressed in the literature that it represents a revision of an earlier English rendition made from the Vulgate published in 1610 as part of the Douay-Rheims Bible. The adduced data draw from history, life writing studies and linguistics, thereby offering multidisciplinary evidence in favour of the originality of the rendition.

Im Autobiographiediskurs spielen Romane bisher keine nennenswerte Rolle als theoretische Impulsgeber. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt, dass STEN NADOLNYS Selim oder Die Gabe der Rede eine autofiktionale Situation im inneren der diegetischen Welt erzeugt und sich damit für die Reflexion autobiographietheoretischer Problemkontexte eignet. Mit Rekurs auf Kristevas Überlegungen zur Selbst-Fremdheit werden die ‚autofiktionalen‘ Schreibakte vorgeführt, die das Individuum auch vom Fremden her erschreiben. Als dezentrierte Selbstlebensbeschreibung überschreitet NADOLNYS Roman damit gängige Formen der Autofiktion.
W rozważaniach nad autobiografią gatunek powieściowy odgrywał do niedawna mało istotną rolę jako przedmiot badań. Artykuł pokazuje, że powieść STENA NADOLNEGO Selim oder Die Gabe der Rede tworzy w świecie przedstawionym sytuację autofikcjonalną. Tym samym można ten utwór poddać teoretycznej refleksji w odniesieniu do autobiografii. W kontekście rozważań Julii Kristevy na temat obcości podmiotu wobec samego siebie, przedstawione zostają autofikcjonalne strategie pisarskie, które wywodzą autobiografię od ‚obcego’. Powieść NADOLNEGO – można ją nazwać ‚zdezorientowanym’ opisem samego siebie – przekracza wobec tego tradycyjne formy autofikcji.
Discourse concerning autobiography does not usually include novels as material for theoretical study. This article demonstrates how STEN NADOLNY’S novel Selim oder Die Gabe der Rede creates an autofictional situation within a diegetic world; therefore it may be a subject of reflection on theoretical problems associated with autobiography. In the context of Julia Kristeva’s deliberations on self-alienation, the Author discusses ‘autofictional’ acts of writing that describe the self through the ‘other’. As decentered life-writing, NADOLNY’S novel transcends common forms of autofiction.

Beyond questionable distinctions between autobiography, autofiction and testimonies, selfnarratives may be defined interculturally (with help from the Englishspeaking world) as (predominantly reflexive) forms of life narratives and examples of life-writing; III. Autobiography and autofiction can’t file for divorce; IV. We should joyfully call for the end of [La] *Francophonie, substitute what could be abbreviated as LEF (littérature d’expression française) to the unfortunate expression littérature *francophone, and/or play on semantic neutrality and signal the *Francophone imposture with a (typographical) countersign: *francophone, *Francophonie; V. The “culturality” inherent to self-narratives opens itself up to the question of minorities.
