Opis:
The present paper analyzes beliefs about the age factor of learners of English as a foreign language (EFL) with different starting ages (early vs. late starters), in different grades (in Year 7 at the beginning and in Year 12 at the end of secondary school), and with different levels of EFL proficiency (high achievers vs. low achievers). The sample for the study was drawn from a larger sample of 200 secondary school students who were part of a longitudinal study, undertaken in Switzerland between 2008 and 2015. From this sample we selected 10 early starting high-achievers, 10 early starting low-achievers, 10 late starting high-achievers, and 10 late starting low-achievers. A qualitative analysis of language experience essays written at the beginning and at the end of secondary school revealed that learners with different starting ages, in different grades, and with different levels of proficiency displayed different beliefs about the age factor.  The overall lack of age effect on FL achievement found in our previous studies may be explicable in terms of a number of affective factors (e.g. disengagement of the early starters due to language practices of the classroom) and contextual factors (e.g. transition from English in primary to English in secondary).

Exposed correction can be seen as a tool whose use on the one hand temporarily stops the progressivity of the talk, but at the same time makes it possible for the speakers in interaction to clarify problems that have occurred, both in mundane conversation and institutional talk. Using conversation analysis, a dataset of 18 teaching hours (1585 minutes of video-recordings of whole-class work in total) was examined to identify and describe the practices used by learners and teachers in English as a foreign language (EFL) classrooms when conducting exposed correction. The analysis shows that in exposed correction sequences there seems to be a requirement for the learners to produce a reaction to teacher correction. While learners typically repeat the correct form after the teacher has corrected them in a correction sequence that the learners initiated by displaying trouble producing the target language form, teacher-initiated sequences tend to generate minimal post-expansion on the part of the learners. When no student response comes, the teacher may expand the correction sequence.

Opis:
The study was conducted to find out what impact a digital game had on students’ learning performance and motivation. A quasi-experimental study was performed with two groups of students. The experimental group was taught using the digital game Kahoot whereas the control group was taught with the conventional method. Pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires on the students’ motivation and attitudes toward gamification in language learning were the instruments used in this study. The data were analyzed using Independent t-tests and One-way Analysis of Covariance. The results revealed statistically significant differences with regard to learning performance and motivation at 0.05. The experimental group obtained higher scores than the control group, and the motivation of students in the experimental group was much higher than that of the control group. In addition, the results of a survey indicated that students had positive attitudes towards application of digital games in language learning.

Opis:
The article attempts to present the potential of Wszystkie lajki Marczuka in the context of the Polish Language teaching on second and third level of education. The paper analyses the issue of coexistence of two time lines- the future and the past, at the same time corresponding to the two main themes of the novel: the Holocaust and existence of modern forms of communication, e.g. Facebook. In the article the reader will also find comments on the separate units of textbooks for the sixth grade of primary school (Teraz polski! and Słowa na start!), which contain excerpts from the book by Beręsewicz followed by tasks referring to the work. The last part of the paper contains lesson plans prepared by the students of the Polish Language based on Wszystkie lajki Marczuka, divided into three thematic areas (patriotism and the Jewish question, the truth in the network, mechanisms of advertisement). The article was enriched with statements of young readers (middle school students), sharing their thoughts on the reading

Opis:
This article attempts to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of foreign language teaching in Polish schools by giving learners’ views on the process of the teaching of languages. The opinions presented come from a questionnaire carried out among pupils who learn various languages. The results of the survey are intended to show the learning situation as seen by students themselves. Their description and assessment of school learning enable us, to judge whether being taught a language in school satisfies their needs and expectations, and also to assess whether and to what extent this learning is consistent with European language policy.

The present paper is designed to show how playful activities, practised in a language class, are likely to enhance both teacher – students and students – students interaction. First, it is demonstrated how plays might increase the atmosphere of confi dence during class hours. Then, it is shown in what respects plays are essential to establish interaction. Finally, plays are dealt with as a device that can be conveniently deployed in language teaching-learning conceived of as an action.
