Analysis of tradition devoted to Isaac leads to the conclusion that the character of the patriarch described a pattern known from the cycle of Abraham. Sometimes it almost a mirror image in an abbreviated form (as Gen. 26). Isaac is presented as a second Abraham, and his character is transferred from the patriarchal promises from Abraham to Jacob (Gen. 27). The prophet Amos (Amos 7,9.16), although his expressions are not yet satisfactorily explained, gives the impression that in the eighth century BC, there was a sense of connectedness between the character of Isaac localized in Beer Sheba and memory ethno-religious people of the Kingdom of Israel. Indeed the Prophet used the term “house of Isaac” parallel to the term “house of Jacob” and mentions the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Northerners in Beer Sheba.

Opis:

Since the 19th century, both popular and professional literature presented a possibility according to which Isaac Newton contributed to some extent to the invention of jet propulsion. In the presented paper, this view is carefully analysed. Various authors attributed to Newton the design of a road vehicle (the so-called Newton’s steam carriage) moved by ejection of hot steam. This opinion was expressed in certain works written by the first supporters of Newton, e.g. Willem Jacob ’s Gravesande, John Theophilus Desaguliers Desaguliers and Jean Antoine Nollet. What is more, there are miniature models of such a vehicle present in some collections of scientific instruments. Relying on the above examples, it would be hard to prove that Newton was indeed the true inventor of jet propulsion. However, there is no doubt that he was very interested in various engineering issues and invented several scientific instruments, e.g. the variant of a reflecting telescope, a sea octant and a rotary slide rule.

The poems were found in two Karaite manuscripts, one undated, the other dated 1686.

The paper presents engineering interests of Isaac Newton, including some of his technical inventions. So far, this topic has not been studied in a broader manner and in more depth. This article discusses Newton’s youthful passions against the backdrop of the so-called mathematical magic literature. His two inventions, i.e. variants of the reflecting telescope and the marine octant are also discussed. Finally, an example is provided of the involvement of the author of Principia in a discussion around the steam engine and the ship powered by such engine designed by Denis Papin.
Artykuł przedstawia zainteresowania inżynierskie Isaaca Newtona, w tym niektóre z jego wynalazków technicznych. Temat ten nie doczekał się jak dotąd szerszego i pogłębionego opracowania. W artykule poruszono młodzieńcze pasje Newtona na tle literatury z zakresu tzw. magii matematycznej. Omówiono także dwa wynalazki Newtona – wariant teleskopu zwierciadłowego i oktant morski. Na koniec został przytoczony przykład zaangażowania autora Zasad w dyskusję nad projektem technicznym maszyny parowej i napędzanego przez nią statku autorstwa Denisa Papina.

The article is a case study illustrating the phenomenon of historical and cultural memory of the Andalusia region in the work of Isaac Albéniz, a famous Spanish composer of classical music on the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The article discusses the most outstanding composition of I. Albéniz Iberia in the context of the issue of national identity, history and culture of Andalusia. It contains a historical outline of individual Andalusian regions and Albéniz’s letters.

This paper analyses urban spaces of crisis in Isaac Rosa’s novels La mano invisible (2011), La habitación oscura (2013), and the graphic novel Aquí vivió. Historia de un desahucio (2016) by Cristina Bueno and Isaac Rosa. It explores the dystopian and realistic elements in Rosa’s fiction and proposes to read his works through the lens of Michel Foucault’s essay on other spaces. The article argues that the unusual, quasi-dystopian spaces are of a double nature, typical for heterotopias, and play a significant role in the manner in which Rosa depicts the consequences of the economic crisis in Spain at the beginning of the 21st century.

Modern critical reception characterizes patriarch Isaac as a particular character type: the schlemiel. This article provides a tour through the cumulative evidence for this comedic read, focusing on Genesis 27, the blessing of Jacob. It provides a revised narratological and literary context, arguing that Isaac’s fivefold questioning demonstrates not confusion, but awareness: he knows exactly which son is in front of him. The paper presents an alternative narratological and literary context for Isaac, framing his questions in terms of the editing process: a synchronic reading of Isaac’s acumen is corroborated by evidence from diachronic reading. The redaction history of the Isaac material in chapter 26 yields a number of points suggesting the dependence of the Abraham material on the Isaac narrative. A number of features indicate a stronger, less subordinate Isaac figure based on the earlier tradition revealed by a complex transmission history than the image arising from the mainstream synchronic reading of chapter 27 seems to depict.

Isaac Newton is known primarily as an outstanding mathematician and physicist. Less known are his interests in alchemy, theology, and history. Yet, we still know very little about his interest in engineering and about how he designed and created several scientific instruments (e.g. a variant of the reflecting telescope, a variant of the rotary slide rule). Among them, there is also a navigational octant built by Newton in 1699. This device is an example of an ingenious solution in the field of early modern catadioptrical instruments.

The Aqedah story is a crown jewel of the biblical literature. Highlighting genuine emotions and important theological and ethical problems, it holds ground in all monotheistic religions. It brings about several questions concerning the mutual relationship between man and God, and man’s relationship with his son, wife and surroundings. Rabbinic literature provides plurality of perspectives on the Aqedah. It fills in gaps of the narrative and suggests directions o f interpretation that reflects in Josephus and perhaps in the Qumranic literature. Some interpretations are rooted in Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha literature, and many continue in the medieval Jewish interpretation. Usually the rabbis see God’s request as a test of Abraham’s unconditional belief. Some view the text as Abraham mistaking God’s intent. Others are justifying the placement of God and blaming Satan and Abraham. Several rabbis considered the Aqedah as an act of Kiddush Hashem (martyrdom). Abraham is viewed as one who is truly motivated by his religious belief over moral command, and his immediate acceptance of the command was praised. Many consider the Aqedah also as Isaac’s test. There are several approaches regarding what truly happened on the mount. However, Isaac’s blood cannot be viewed as a counterblast to Jesus’ blood. Sarah’s death was related with the Aqedah. Abraham’s act is considered to be an enduring eminence of Israel.

Isomorphism has become a key concept for the analysis of representation in many contexts: perceptual experience, mental imagery, scientific theories, and visual artwork may all be described as standing in isomorphisms to their targets. Yet isomorphism is a technical term from mathematics—how are we to evaluate its use in fields such as philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, or physics? I suggest that we should understand appeals to isomorphism as allegorical; the upshot of this suggestion is that isomorphism claims always operate on two distinct levels of significance, with different standards of precision and evaluation. Recognizing these levels as distinct changes the landscape of debate for isomorphism-based accounts of representation: it both dissolves the well-known triviality objection to these accounts and undermines strong forms of structural realism.

Robotników i roboty łączy ze sobą intencja do posłuszeństwa rozkazom, która jest powodem mojej propozycji analizy kilku opowieści o robotach autorstwa Isaaca Asimova. Realizowanie programu w trakcie wykrywania i rozwiązywania problemów oraz wypełniania zadanych instrukcji – to wszystko czyni robota doskonałym niewolnikiem. Trzy Prawa Robotyki Asimova stanowią formalny warunek możliwości pracy w społeczeństwie utrzymującym roboty, tak samo jak niewolnicze prawa w koloniach brytyjskich Ameryki miały zapewnić utrzymanie efektywności niewolnictwa poprzez zamknięcie niewolników w miejscach ich pracy. Poprzez ustanowienie struktury rozkazu potrzebnej w utrzymywaniu i demontowaniu pracującego systemu androidy Asimova objawiają niemożliwość obydwu – robotów i niewolników. Trzy Prawa i ich konsekwencja, czyli gwarancja ochrony, rozkazu i operacji, prawdopodobnie nie mogą działać wobec podmiotów będących oddzielnie panami lub niewolnikami. Te Prawa są paradoksalnym zestawieniem w konsekwencji czego niewolnictwo staje się niemożliwe z punktu widzenia logiki.
Slaves and robots have in common that they are intended to obey orders. Therefore I suggest taking a close look at some of Isaac Asimov’s robot stories. Executing a program while detecting and overcoming problems and acting towards fulfillment of given instructions—all this makes a robot a perfect slave. In the same way as slave laws in the British Colonies in America were intended to keep slavery effective by confining slaves in their place, so are Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics the formal condition for the workability of a robot holding society. Asimov’s androids reveal the implicit impossibility of both robots and slaves by establishing the command structure that would be needed to keep the system working and then disassembling this structure. The Three Laws, as they are meant to guarantee protection, command, and operation, cannot possibly work with separate master/slave subjects. They are a paradoxical juxtaposition. And consequently, slavery is logically impossible.

Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on care for our common home, invites humanity to cultivate “ecological virtues” in order to become more responsible stewards of our imperilled common home. According to the Pope, the formation of healthy habitus for the stewardship of Earth can be achieved only through the cultivation of appropriate ecological virtues. It may be recalled that there is a growing awareness of the importance of the role of ecological virtues in environmental ethics today. In this paper we shall reflect on seven ecological virtues: praise, gratitude, care, justice, work, sobriety, and humility. They do not receive a separate treatment in Laudato Si’, but are mentioned throughout the encyclical. They are like signposts that indicate the road that we need to travel in caring for our common planetary home.

It is well known that a weakly almost periodic operator T in a Banach space is mean ergodic, and in the complex case, also λT is mean ergodic for every |λ|=1. We prove that a positive contraction on $L_1$ is weakly almost periodic if (and only if) it is mean ergodic. An example shows that without positivity the result is false. In order to construct a contraction T on a complex $L_1$ such that λT is mean ergodic whenever |λ|=1, but T is not weakly almost periodic, we prove the following: Let τ be an invertible weakly mixing non-singular transformation of a separable atomless probability space. W 2011 roku podczas bardzo poważnego trzęsienia ziemi obiekt poniósł znaczne szkody, a audytorium i foyer zostały uznane za nienaprawialne w ich pierwotnej formie, głównie ze względu na niebezpieczeństwo zawalenia. Podczas kilku lat prac budowlanych i renowacyjnych prawie wszystkie elementy obiektu i jego wyposażenia o znacznej wartości kulturowej udało się uratować i wybudować ponownie. Projekt odbudowy umożliwił przebudowanie teatru zgodnie z najnowszymi wymogami technicznymi oraz bieżącą najlepszą praktyką teatralną, przy jednoczesnym zachowaniu wartości kulturowej i niewątpliwego uroku. W artykule przedstawiono historię obiektu, przyczyny i skutki katastrofy oraz proces odbudowy i efekt końcowy.
The New Zealand theatre “Isaac Theatre Royal” is the spiritual heart of the art scene of the city of Christchurch and the entire Canterbury region. In this theatre, spectacular performances of artists valued all over the world have been taking place for over a century. In 2011, during a very serious earthquake, the facility suffered considerable damage, and the auditorium and foyer were considered irreparable in their original form, mainly due to the danger of collapse. During several years of construction and renovation work, almost all elements of the facility and its equipment of considerable cultural value were saved and rebuilt. The reconstruction project made it possible to rebuild the theatre in accordance with the latest technical requirements and current best theatre practice, while maintaining cultural value and undoubted charm. The article presents the history of the object, causes and effects of the disaster as well as the reconstruction process and the final effect.

Opis:

One of the main challenges for 17th-century natural philosophers was to find an answer to the question of what makes matter active at all? The legacy of 'prime matter' and its pure potentiality was still alive, and the adoption of corpuscular or atomistic theories did not change much here, the conviction about the total passivity of bodies was still dominant. Their actions demanded some explanation that would be the equivalent of an Aristotelian, non-material and active form. It seems that one of the philosophical traditions that were sought for such an explanation was the emanational metaphysics of Plotinus. In seventeenth-century systems it underwent various modifications, but its main idea, indicating the active role of certain 'principles' or 'spirits' responsible for initiating any changes in matter and managing them in accordance with the Creator's intention, remained the foundation of the theories of matter. An example of such solutions are the systems of Henry More and his good acquaintance from Cambridge, Isaac Newton. In the first case there is no doubt about the fundamental influence of Neoplatonism, but in the second case historians' opinions are divided. Newton reaches in search of 'active principles' for alchemical research, with the hope of finding these principles not only when referring to philosophical speculations, but also to experimental methods. This difference, however, does not change the fact that both philosophers try to discover the mode of action of 'active spirits', hesitating between placing in the particles of matter a number of separate principles and pointing to only one acting universally principle that was just an extension of God's arm – More calls it the Spirit of Nature (Vicarious Power of God), and Newton sees that principle ultimately in Christ (Viceroy of God).
Jednym z głównych wyzwań stojących przed filozofami przyrody XVII wieku było znalezienie odpowiedzi na pytanie, co sprawia, że materia w ogóle działa? Dziedzictwo ‘materii pierwszej’ i jej czystej potencjalności było wciąż żywe, a przyjęcie teorii korpuskularnej czy atomistycznej niewiele tu zmieniało, dominowało wciąż przekonanie o całkowitej bierności ciał. Ich działanie domagało się jakiegoś wyjaśnienia, które stanowiłoby odpowiednik arystotelesowskiej, niematerialnej i aktywnej, formy. Wydaje się, że jedną z tradycji filozoficznych, do których sięgano w poszukiwaniu takiego wyjaśnienia, była emanacyjna metafizyka Plotyna. W systemach XVII-wiecznych ulegała ona różnorodnym modyfikacjom, ale jej główna idea, wskazująca na aktywną rolę pewnych ‘zasad’, czy ‘duchów’ odpowiedzialnych za inicjowanie wszelkich zmian w materii i kierowanie nimi zgodnie z zamysłem Stwórcy, pozostawała fundamentem ówczesnych teorii działania materii. Przykładem takich rozwiązań są systemy Henry’ego More’a i jego dobrego znajomego z Cambridge, Izaaka Newtona. W pierwszym przypadku nie ma wątpliwości co do zasadniczego wpływu neoplatonizmu, w drugim jednak zdania historyków są podzielone. Newton sięga bowiem w poszukiwaniu ‘aktywnych zasad’ do badań alchemicznych, z nadzieją odnalezienia owych zasad nie tylko przy odwołaniu się do filozoficznych spekulacji, ale także do metod eksperymentalnych. Różnica ta jednak nie zmienia faktu, że obaj filozofowie starają się odkryć sposób działania ‘duchów aktywnych’, wahając się między umieszczeniem w cząstkach materii wielu odrębnych zasad a wskazaniem na zasadę jedną, działającą uniwersalnie i będącą niejako przedłużeniem Bożego ramienia – More nazywa ją Duchem Natury (Vicarious Power of God), a Newton upatruje jej ostatecznie w Chrystusie (Viceroy of God).

The paper attempts to interpret Wisława Szymborska’s poem The Night which takes up the Old Testament story of Abraham sacrificing Isaac on the Mount Moriah. The author tries to demonstrate how the poet – using the child’s voice – argues with the biblical text. The introduction of the contexts of developmental psychology and of Jewish Passover together with a detailed analysis lead to the conclusion that Szymborska’s poem – employing emotional and intellectual simplifications – constitutes an ideological statement.

Wybór Abrahama był niezwykle ważny dla całej historii odkupienia opisanej zarówno w Starym, jak i w Nowym Testamencie. Osobisty kontakt z Bogiem przyniósł obraz Boga będącego blisko człowieka. Abraham uważany był za przyjaciela Boga. Tak postrzegany jest we wszystkich trzech religiach monoteistycznych: judaizmie, chrześcijaństwie i islamie. Patriarcha jest więc postacią najbardziej „ekumeniczną” ze wszystkich i nazywany jest „ojcem wiary”. Historyczność Abrahama jest obecnie szeroko dyskutowana. Zagadnienie to było badane z perspektywy historycznej, archeologicznej, etnologicznej i religiologicznej.Przymierze Boga z Abrahamem było pierwszym historycznym wydarzeniem, które przypieczętowało ludzkie relacje wertykalne. Przymierze Boga z Noem nie miało charakteru historycznego, lecz było jedynie ludzką nadzieją na intymną relację z Najwyższym. To sam Bóg wzbudził w człowieku te nadzieje. Opis przymierza z Noem był preludium do przymierza Jahwe z Abrahamem i jego potomkami. Wybór Abrahama przez Boga zmienił na zawsze historię ludzkości. Odtąd Jahwe miał powtarzać.Opowiadanie o związaniu Izaaka – syna Abrahama (Rdz 22,1-19) jest jednym z najbardziej porywających tekstów w całej Biblii hebrajskiej Po rozdziale (Rdz 21), w którym Izaak rodzi się jako spełnienie Bożej obietnicy, czytelnik przechodzi do tekstu, w którym Bóg żąda od Abrahama złożenia chłopca w ofierze. Tekst Rdz 22,1-19 jest mieszaniną źródeł E i J, dlatego opisane w nim motywy musiały być znane w różnych tradycjach izraelskich i były postrzegane jako szczególnie ważne zagadnienia nauczania religijnego.
Abraham’s choice was extremely important for the whole history of redemption described both in the Old and the New Testaments. Personal contact with God has brought the image of God being close to man. Abraham was considered to be God’s friend. He is perceived as such in all the three monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. The patriarch is thus the most “ecumenical” character of all and is called the “father of faith”. The historicity of Abraham has been presently widely discussed. The question has been studied from the historical, archaeological, ethnological and religiological perspectives.The covenant of God with Abraham was the first historical event that sealed human vertical relations. God’s covenant with Noah had not been historical but merely human hopes of intimate relation with the Highest. It was God Himself to evoke the hopes in man. The description of the Noahite covenant was a prelude to Yahweh covenant with Abraham and his descendants. God’s choice of Abraham has changed human history for ever. Since then Yahweh would repeat.The tale of Isaac’s – Abraham’s son – binding (Gen 22:1-19) is one of the most thrilling texts in the whole Hebrew Bible After the chapter (Gen 21), Isaac, being born in fulfilment of God’ s promise, the reader goes to the text where God demands from Abraham to sacrifice the boy. The text of Gen 22:1-19 is a mixture of E and J sources therefore the motifs described there must have been known in various Israeli traditions and were perceived as specially important issues of religious teaching.

Scholars over the years have delved into the discourse of states’ foreign publics engagements in their foreign policy objectives. This analysis is done generally with the western perspective of public diplomacy with recent Asian scholarship evolving. As a result, this study aims to reflect on public diplomacy from an African perspective. Therefore, it analyses how African governments have been engaging their foreign publics (foreign governments and their citizens) to attract foreign aid, tourism, and investments in their nation-building and development trajectory. The article explores African public diplomacy mechanisms such as diasporas, nation branding, cultural diplomacy, and many others. It also digests some of the challenges confronting African governments in their public diplomacy campaigns, like lack of research, human and financial resources, and lack of coherent foreign policy documents. The article’s findings demonstrate that although Africa generally has rich public diplomacy resources, these are not adequately harnessed in most African states’ foreign policy. This situation has led to poor foreign policy implementation by most African governments. The study contributes to the public diplomacy scholarship in general and African public diplomacy in particular, which scholars have underexplored. It concludes that scholars should delve into the exegesis of the rich African public diplomacy currencies.

В статье анализируется связь между Станционным смотрителем Александра Пушкина и Поцелуем Исаака Бабеля. Показывается, что параллели между рассказами не исчерпываются общностью сюжетного инварианта, восходящего к Бедной Лизе Николая Карамзина, проявляясь в целом ряде элементов художественного мира: «двойная оптика», в которой показана героиня; образ отца, взаимоотношения соблазнителя и отца; структура пространства и роль движения / статики; роль поцелуя в фабуле рассказа. Далее утверждается, что на фоне такого сходства можно говорить о контрасте между рассказчиками пушкинского и бабелевского текстов. Бабелевский рассказчик демонстрирует равнодушие к смыслу – фундаментальной категории для пушкинского рассказчика, который извлекает смысл из нарративов. В отличие от рассказчика Станционного смотрителя, рассказчик Поцелуя, который вначале претендует на звание интеллигента, в дальнейшем отказывается от рефлексии и поиска смысла, вручает свою агентность ординарцу Суровцеву, сливается с казацкой массой и взамен получает физическую любовь Томилиной, героини рассказа. Похожий контраст прослеживается между рассказчиком Поцелуя и Лютовым, рассказчиком бабелевского цикла Конармия. С одной стороны, этот поздний рассказ показывает, как изменился взгляд писателя на героя-рассказчика, не решавшегося ранее примкнуть к казакам, а теперь делающего свой выбор. С другой – Поцелуй демонстрирует, как изменилась, по мысли Бабеля, за минувшие после Пушкина сто лет роль мыслящего человека в России. Поцелуй, таким образом, представляет собой высказывание, которое можно интерпретировать как своеобразный «ответ» Станционному смотрителю.
In this article, a connection between Pushkin’s The Postmaster and Babel’s The Kiss is demonstrated. The links between the stories go far beyond the general likeness of the plot, which follows the pattern of Nikolai Karamzin’s Poor Liza. This makes it possible to speak about a contrast between the narrators of Babel’s and Pushkin’s short stories. Babel’s narrator demonstrates a lack of interest in meaning – a fundamental category for Pushkin’s narrator, who extracts meaning from narratives he listens to. Unlike the narrator of The Postmaster, the narrator of The Kiss, who at first claims to be a representative of the intelligentsia, gives up reflection and meaning, surrenders his agency to his Cossack assistant, merges with the Cossack mass, and, in return, gets the physical love of Tomilina. A similar contrast could be traced between the narrator of The Kiss and the narrator of Red Cavalry. On the one hand, thus, The Kiss marks a change in Babel’s attitude towards his narrator; on the other hand, the story shows how the role of a thinking person in Russia has changed, according to Babel, since Pushkin. Therefore, the story constitutes a statement which could be interpreted as an ‘answer’ to The Postmaster.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the Greek text of Sir 44:22-23, but it also takes into account the Hebrew version of the praise of Isaac and Jacob. The main aim of the article is to read Sirach’s depiction of these two patriarchs in his Praise of the Fathers (Sir 44:1 – 50:24) and the role and significance that he attributes to them in Israel’s history. The analysis conducted shows that the Jerusalem sage based his presentation of Isaac and Jacob exclusively on the Book of Genesis, not referring to any theological traditions connected with the patriarchs that were known during the Second Temple period. The principal role played by the two patriarchs in the history of the chosen nation is passing on to the subsequent generation the covenant that God made with Abraham and the promises related to it (Isaac’s substantial passivity in this role has to be pointed out). It is this motif that is emphasized in Sir 44:22-23, as a result of which other important events from the patriarchs’ lives are completely overlooked, including the justification of Jacob’s stealing of Isaac’s blessing for his firstborn son.

The article analyzes Gershom Scholem’s kabbalistic philosophy through the notionof nothingness, being a crucial notion of Jewish kabbalah. I argue that Scholem’s thoughtmight be called the “two dimensions of nothingness” which correspond to the concepts ofcreation and revelation. I analyze the nothingness of creation against the backgroundof the Lurianic kabbalah whereas the nothingness of revelation is analyzed through theprism of Franz Kafka’s literature. The result of the analysis is the original interpretation ofScholem’s thought, in which nothingness fails to connote nihilism, having instead a substantialpotential of productivity.
Artykuł jest próbą analizy kabalistycznej filozofii Gershoma Scholema w kontekście pojęcia nicości, które odgrywa w żydowskiej kabale kluczową rolę. Stawiam tezę, że myśl Scholema można określić mianem „dwóch wymiarów nicości”, odpowiadających pojęciom stworzenia i objawienia. Koncepcję nicości stworzenia omawiam na podstawie kabały Luriańskiej, będącej dla Scholema jednym z głównych źródeł inspiracji, zaś nicość objawienia odczytuję przez pryzmat twórczości Franza Kafki, której Scholem również poświęcił wiele uwagi. Pozwala to na oryginalną interpretację myśli Scholema, w której nicość nie konotuje nihilizmu, lecz zdradza znaczący potencjał produktywności.

Opis:

Large-scale panel destressing is a rockburst mitigation technique employed in deep hard rock mines during remnant pillar extraction. Panels are choke blasted in the pillar footwall to cutoff the far-field major stress in the mining area and deviate them around the pillar. In this study, the effects of panel geometry and far-field stress magnitude are investigated. Destress blast performance is assessed by measuring change to the energy release rate (ERR) of all mining steps during the extraction of a simplified remnant pillar due to destressing. It is demonstrated that the energy release rate (ERR) of critical stopes is reduced by 30% with the base panel geometry. The panel thickness is shown to have the most influence on the efficiency of destressing, followed by the stand-off distance between the panel and the pillar and the overhang length of the panel. The effect of far-field stress magnitude on the ERR is also investigated, and the destress blast performance is expressed as an equivalent major principal stress reduction. It is shown that with the base panel geometry, the destressing program offers the same ERR reduction as a 9.6 MPa reduction in the far-field stress for the most critical stopes. Finally, the Copper Cliff Mine (CCM) panel destressing program is presented as a case study. The ore at risk and ERR are calculated over the extraction and destressing sequence in the pillar with a pillar-wide numerical model.

This article presents a brief overview of historical methods of legal proof prior to and soon after the Norman Conquest of England in October 1066. Through an examination of the rituals of compurgation and the ordeal, which were techniques designed to discover truth prior to the establishment of the inquisition in medieval Europe and the common law jury trial in England, the human quest for intellectual conviction has been indelibly with us since the days of antiquity. And, whichever method to ascertain truth is ultimately utilized – compurgation or ordeal, inquisition or cross-examination, trial by judge or by jury – the law’s enduring search for certainty amidst a world of doubt owes much to the history and times of William the Conqueror.

Scientific paradigm changes are frequently accompanied by the reconsideration of central terms and ideas. This article demonstrates how this process is currently underway in Russian anthropological studies [narodovedenie] as part of a broader move away from ethnography to theoretical ethnology. The article also shows lines of succession and divergence between various paradigms currently dominant in Russian anthropology, including primordialism and constructivism, and presents the author’s vision of a definition of “ethnicity”, instruments needed to study ethnicities, the nature of “ethnicity,” the underlying axioms on which ethnicities are conceptualized. An initial attempt has been made in the article to outline the central positions that would provide for a principally new ethnological paradigm by way of a new definition of the phenomenon of ethnicity.
Смена парадигмы в науке сопровождается ревизией основных терминов и понятий. В статье показано, как этот процесс происходит в российских антропологических исследованиях, маркируя переход от этнографии описаний к теоретической этнологии. Показаны преемственность и различия между различными парадигмами, доминирующими в настоящее время в Российской этнологии, в том числе примордиализмом и конструктивизмом, а также авторами статьи выдвинута новая версия понимания этноса, инструментов его изучения, его природы, корневого постулата (аксиомы) этничности. Сделана попытка очертить основные контуры принципиально иной парадигмы этнологии через новое определение феномена этничности (этноса).

This article concerns events of the Old Testament – Yahweh commands Abraham to sacrifice his only son – Isaac – on Mount Moriah. This passage from the Old Testament, from the Book of Genesis, became the basis of Søren Kierkegaard’s considerations in Fear and Trembling. In the text I refer to, on the one hand, Kierkegaard’s considerations, while on the other hand I try to identify other possible interpretive tropes that could be useful, for example, during classes on the subject of faith or the status of ethical dilemmas in the modern world.

Praca stanowi próbę odczytania kondycji współczesnego kapitalizmu konsumpcyjnego przez pryzmat działań mesjańskich. Celem autora jest odpowiedź na pytanie, czy możliwa jest subwersja mechanizmów utowarowienia z wnętrza kapitalizmu, a jeśli tak – w jaki sposób miałaby się ona dokonać. Matrycą teoretyczną rozważań będą osadzone w tradycji kabały luriańskiej pisma Waltera Benjamina, z uwzględnieniem ich późniejszej krytyki. Efektem końcowym pracy będzie zarysowanie figury „mesjańskiego śmieciarza” oraz wyjaśnienie, dlaczego to właśnie ona została przez autora wybrana jako podmiot mesjańskiej subwersji kapitalizmu.
The paper attempts at interpreting the condition of contemporary consumer capitalism through the prism of messianic enterprise. The aim is to consider the possibility of subverting commoditization from the inside and to outline potential ways of doing this. The theoretical matrix of the paper are Walter Benjamin’s works set in the tradition of Isaac Luria’s kaballah, along with their further criticism.The final result of the paper should be the figure of a “messianic dustman”and explanation why it has been chosen as the subject of subverting capitalism.

Kiedy Izaak stał się stary i nie mógł widzieć, został zaślepiony przez swoje pragnienie dziczyzny. Przygotował je Ezaw, który został jednak ubiegnięty przez Rebekę, która zyskała błogosławieństwo dla swego umiłowanego syna, Jakuba. Jakub był ojcem najbardziej doświadczonym przez życie. Jego miłość do Józefa i po jego rzekomej śmierci do najmłodszego syna, Beniamina, ostała się próbie.
The Book of Genesis tells a story about three fathers: Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. To be a father for Abraham is first to expect a child for a long time, then to follow the words of promise God speaks to him, especially the promise of a son. When Ishmael and Isaac have been born to him, his father affections are put to the tests. Ishmael has to be sent away along with his mother Hagar. Then, God commands him to sacrifice his now only son, Isaac. When Isaac himself was old and could not see, he was blinded by his desire for the venison stew, Esau used to prepare for him, but eventually he was corrected by his wife Rebekah who gained his blessing for Jacob, the son she loved. Finally, Jacob is the most experienced father. His love for Joseph and then after his alleged death, for his youngest son Benjamin, proved to be strong enough and stood the test of time.

Celem publikacji jest wyłonienie, wpisanego w twórczość Isaaka Bashevisa Singera, obrazu świata sprzed II wojny światowej. Szczególną uwagę skupiono na literackiej wizji Lubelszczyzny, rozważanej nie tylko według kryteriów geograficznych, ale i autobiograficznych. Podążając tropem autobiografii, trafiamy nie tylko do dawnych lubelskich miast i miasteczek, będących miejscem akcji wielu jego dzieł, ale i na rozdroża refleksji historycznej, do której inspiruje singerowska spuścizna. Dzięki uważnej lekturze dzieł polsko-żydowskiego Noblisty pytania o sens i kształt wielokulturowości, narodowej tożsamości, patriotyzmu mogą zyskać ponadczasowe, zaktualizowane sensy.
The purpose of this publication is to capture the image of the world from before the Second World War, inscribed in the works of Isaac Bashevis Singer. Particular attention was focused on the literary vision of the Lublin Region, considered in terms not only of geography, but also of autobiography. Following the autobiography, we not only find our way to the former towns and boroughs of the Lublin Region, where many of his works are set, but also to the crossroads of historical reflection, which Singer's legacy aspires to. Through careful reading of the works of this Polish-Jewish Nobel laureate, questions regarding the sense and form of multiculturalism, national identity and patriotism can acquire timeless and updated meanings.
Цель статьи – показать картину мира до второй мировой войны, которая запечатлена в творчестве в творчество Исаака Башевиса-Зингера. Автор сосредоточился особенно на литературном изображении люблинской территории, описываемой не только с использованием географических, но и автобиографических критериев. В автобиографии можем найти не только давние города и села, появляющиеся в сюжете многих произведений, но и историческую рефлексию, которую вызывает литературное наследие Сингера. Благодаря внимательному прочтению произведений польско-еврейского лауреата Нобелевской премии, вопросы о смысле многокультурности, народной самости, патриотизма обретают новые, более актуальные оттенки.

Introduction. There is little information regarding childcare practices among adolescent mothers in the study areas. Aim. This study was aimed at investigating knowledge, perception and childcare practices among adolescent mothers. Material and methods. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on randomly select 382 adolescent mothers. A validated semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data, which were analysed using, descriptive and multivariate analyses with p-value set at 0.05. Age of respondents was 18.5±0.7 years. Results. Majority (80.6%) had poor knowledge of when to start ante-natal care. Also, 70.0% of the respondents could not perceive growth monitoring as a necessary strategy for child survival and 86.4% perceived diarrhoea as normal for children during the teething period. Many (58.4%) did not practise exclusive breastfeeding. Respondents with secondary education were less likely to have poor knowledge than those with primary education (OR: 0.2, CI: 0.6-0.9, 95%). Respondents, who received supervision from older women during childcare, were less likely to have poor childcare practice than those who did not (OR: 0.2, CI: 0.4-0.7, 95%). Conclusion. Respondents had poor knowledge of childcare practices when childcare survival strategies were used as the yardstick for evaluation. Involvement of older women is suggested to assist adolescent mothers improve their knowledge and practices of childcare.

Wydana ostatnio encyklika papieża Franciszka Laudato si’ poświęcona trosce o wspólny dom ludzkości, przypomina, że edukacja ekologiczna jest kluczową sprawą, aby ludzie stali się odpowiedzialnymi włodarzami planety. W obliczu współczesnego kryzysu ekologicznego, zauważa się potrzebę głębokiej osobistej przemiany i radykalnego odnowienia stylu życia. Tutaj rola edukacji jest nieoceniona. Papież Franciszek wzywa do edukacji ekologicznej zdolnej ustanowić nowe przymierze między ludzkością a światem natury. Według Papieża, człowiek potrzebuje holistycznej edukacji, która może przywrócić harmonię z naturą, z bliźnimi i z Transcendencją. Papież mówi także o całej gamie środowisk, w których wychowuje się do ekologicznego obywatelstwa: szkoły, rodziny, media, katecheza, domy formacji religijnej itp. Edukacja w kierunku ekologicznego obywatelstwa jest potrzebą chwili w tym kluczowym momencie zagrożenia planety.
Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ recent encyclical on care for our common home, reminds us that ecological education is vital to becoming more responsible stewards of our home planet. In the face of the contemporary ecological crisis, we stand in need of a deep personal transformation and a radical renewal of our life-styles. Here the role of education is paramount. Pope Francis calls for an ecological education capable of establishing a new covenant between humanity and the natural world. According to the Pope, we need a holistic education that can re-establish harmony with nature, our fellow human beings and the Transcendent. The Pope also speaks of the variety of settings for education to ecological citizenship: schools, families, media, catechesis, houses of religious formation, etc. Education towards ecological citizenship is the need of the hour in this crucial moment of planetary emergency.

Forest plantation is reckoned to accounts for 7% of total global forest cover and has the potential to provide 75% of the global industrial round wood supply. The study analyzed forest resource use trend, mapped out areas of high biodiversity conservation,and made recommendations to promote and sustain large-scale plantation development against the background of anthropogenic pressure on vulnerable ecosystems and biodiversity management. The methodology adopted for the study involved the application of geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing techniques, field survey and community interactions. Major findings of the assessment include substantial land use/land cover conversion from one category to another within the past 20 years as a result of agricultural expansion, urbanisation, charcoal production and wood fuel harvesting; dense woodland and riverine forest experienced decline for the 20-year period whilst agriculture open woodland/grassland and settlement were appreciated; floral diversity was high in the dense woodlands with low regeneration potential because of persistent annual wildfires; significant socio-economic and environmental impacts resulting in the conversion of woodlands and removal of riverine vegetation leading to drying out of streams; charcoal production and shifting cultivation leading to decrease in soil productivity and poor crop yields that promotes poverty amongst the inhabitants.

Opis:

This study makes use of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System techniques to assess the vulnerability of structures along river channels in Oyo metropolis. The vulnerable rates were classified into High, Medium and Low using 30m, 45m and 60m buffer distances from the middle of the river channels while network analysis was also carried out to attend to any emergency operation. To achieve this feat, a geospatial database was designed and created with various analyses carried out on the entities extracted from the satellite image of the study area. Such analyses include, buffering to categorize the vulnerable zones into the various classes, network analyst menu of ArcGIS 10.2.2 was employed to find the best route from the Fire Service Station to the point of accident and also an alternative route in case of a barrier or barriers on the best route. This showed that a total of 881 buildings will be affected in any instance of flooding that is within 60m from the middle of the river channels in the study area. 399 buildings fall in high vulnerable zone accounting for 45.29% of the buildings examined for vulnerability in the study area, 245 buildings fall within the moderately vulnerable zone accounting for 27.81% and 237 buildings fall within low vulnerable zone at 26.90%. The best route from the Fire Service Station to the point of accident is gotten to be 2.3 Km while the alternative route is 2.7 Km when a barrier is placed on the best route during rescue mission indicating 0.4 Km difference between the two routes. Maps, tables and a chart were produced for various results.

Opis:

Punktem wyjścia szkicu jest punkt na symbolicznej mapie Europy Wschodniej – zamek w Zbarażu. Od narodowego mitu obrony twierdzy przed wojskami Chmielnickiego w 1649 roku przechodzę do opisu kontrowersji, które budzi do dzisiaj Ogniem i mieczem Henryka Sienkiewicza, przede wszystkim w kwestii opisu relacji społecznych. Te same wydarzenia i tereny opisywali w swej twórczości również pisarze żydowscy (Agnon, Singer) oraz ukraińscy (Szewczenko). Odwołując się do ich utworów oraz prac historyków – polskich, żydowskich i ukraińskich, staram się pokazać, że Wschód nie jest pojęciem jednorodnym i do dziś budzi rozliczne animozje i spory, oparty na uproszczeniach, stereotypach i wzajemnych antagonizmach narodowych, które stanowią wyzwanie dla edukacji opartej na wielokulturowości.
The starting point of the sketch is a place on the symbolic map of Eastern Europe – the castle in Zbaraż. From the Polish myth of defending the fortress against the Khmelnytsky army in 1649, I move on to a description of the controversy that is still awakened by Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Ogniem i mieczem [Fire and Sword], first and foremost in the description of social relations. The same events and areas were also described in the works by Jewish (Agnon, Singer) and Ukrainian (Shevchenko) writers. Referring to their works and the work of historians – Polish, Jewish and Ukrainian, I try to show that the East is not a homogeneous concept and still raises numerous animosities and disputes, based on simplifications, stereotypes and mutual national antagonisms that pose a challenge to education based on multiculturalism.

Opis:

Wind energy is one of the most relevant renewable energy. A proper wind turbine maintenance management is required to ensure continuous operation and optimized maintenance costs. Larger wind turbines are being installed and they require new monitoring systems to ensure optimization, reliability and availability. Advanced analytics are employed to analyze the data and reduce false alarms, avoiding unplanned downtimes and increasing costs. Supervisory control and data acquisition system determines the condition of the wind turbine providing large dataset with different signals and alarms. This paper presents a new approach combining statistical analysis and advanced algorithm for signal processing, fault detection and diagnosis. Principal component analysis and artificial neural networks are employed to evaluate the signals and detect the alarm activation pattern. The dataset has been reduced by 93% and the performance of the neural network is incremented by 1000% in comparison with the performance of original dataset without filtering process.

Opis:

Thanks to historical and philosophical researches it is known for a long time that the definition “veritas est adequatio rei et intellectus” does not exist literally in any contemporary known lesson of Book of Definition. It is not eliminate the hypothesis that this definition of truth was in some manuscript which was known by scholastics in XIII century, e.g. as a gloss. It is not out of the question that it was wrongly diagnosis as a statement of Isaac Israeli. Analysis of quotes from this part in the Summa of Theology of Albert the Great about truth gives reasons to suppose that he used from manuscript which is similar in content to the manuscript which is in the Code of Munich 8001 but in contrast to text of Isaac Israeli it is not a shortened version. The basis of expression the definition “truth is a compatibility thing and intellect” probably was given by Isaac Israeli term: “the truth is corroborate thing about thing which [that thing] belongs truthfully or to reject thing from thing of which it is a truly rejected”. Supposedly on account of these things St. Thomas Aquinas refered on Isaac as an author of the definition of truth known today as “classic”, he kept in mind sense, not literal identity. Perhaps a gloss from unknowing manuscript suggested this sense or the established interpretation was the result of talks with the champion of Cologne. St. Albert evidently quoted the statement about the truth from Liber de definitionibus what we cannot say about Thomas. In a such situation an enigmatic character still has got an attribution of definition which is interesting for us. Aquinas could directly appeal to the works of Aristotle, in particular to the well-known a term of true appraise from Book IV of Metaphysics (1011b 27). The reason of connection the name of Isaac Israeli with adequatio idea could be that the Doctor Angelicus wanted introduce a definition which has got every kind of truth and at the same time he wanted to remain classical character understanding of it. Liber de definitionibus was good occasion because paraphrase of description true sentence in Aristotle’s think is really unclear. In addition Aristotle made revolutionary change ininterpretation the truth and he referred to an author whose views were not known very well.

In this article the author analyses Stefan Żeromski’s and Isaac Bashevis Singer’s fiction in search of contrasts and similarities in their images of 19th and early 20th century Jewish Warsaw. Singer portrayed it repeatedly in many of his works, such as In My Father’s Court (1966), Shosha (1978), Love and Exile (1984) and The Certificate (1992). Żeromski depicted it in two of his novels: Ludzie bezdomni [Homeless People] (1899) and Przedwiośnie [The Coming Spring] (1924). One would expect the differences to be huge and numerous and the resemblances rare and superficial. Singer memorialized a world that is no more, which was his own universe and heritage, while Żeromski was an outsider exploring an area that is mysterious, afflicted with severe poverty and in some ways out of bounds. Nevertheless, there are some intriguing analogies, particularly when Singer showed his streets, shops and houses through the eyes of a complete stranger or an incomer who perfectly remembers his childhood spent on Krochmalna Street but revisits to find it profoundly transformed—full of new thoughts, ideas and experiences.

Argumenty z projektu na rzecz istnienia Boga często wyszczególniają jakiś aspekt świata przyrody, którego nie można wyjaśnić w świetle naszej aktualnej wiedzy o prawach natury. Taką lukę w wiedzy interpretuje się jako świadectwo istnienia bytu nadnaturalnego. Krytycy opisanego podejścia szufladkują owe argumenty jako błędne koncepcje „Boga w lukach wiedzy”, dlatego że osłabiają one poparcie dla tezy o Bogu Stwórcy, w miarę jak luki te znikają wraz ze wzrostem wiedzy. Wielu ludzi odrzuca argumenty z projektu na rzecz istnienia Boga, ponieważ są przeświadczeni, że pewnego dnia nauka wypełni wszystkie takie luki. Jednakże luki w wiedzy o przyrodzie rzeczywiście występują i społeczność naukowa przyznaje, że wielu z nich nie da się usunąć, nawet w zasadzie. Niniejszy artykuł dokonuje przeglądu różnorodnych rodzajów luk i rozważa ich rolę w argumentacji na rzecz Boga.
Arguments for the existence of God that are based on design often specify an aspect of our natural world that cannot be explained by our current understanding of the laws of nature. Such a gap of knowledge is construed as evidence for the existence of a supernatural being. Critics of this approach label these arguments as „God-of-the-gaps” fallacies that diminish the case for a Creator God as the gaps are filled in with increasing knowledge. Confident that all such gaps will someday be filled via the scientific method, many people reject design arguments for God. However, gaps of knowledge do exist in nature and the scientific community acknowledges that many cannot be filled, even in principle. This article surveys various types of gaps and considers their role in an argument for God.
