„…to help the organists” – Fiori musicali by Girolam Frescobaldi. The subject of the article is the famous collection of organ pieces of Girolam Frescobaldi, entitled Fiori musicali, which since its publication in 1635 has been continuously generating great interest of musicians and listeners. The text presents a wide context of this work’s creation and focuses on the composer’s original concept, which was obliterated as a result of the Second Vatican Council reforms. The reforms removed the music created for the purpose of The Roman Rite from the liturgy and now such music mainly serves the concert and pedagogical purposes. Frescobaldi’s intentions become clear thanks to the confrontation of the content of Musical flowers with the regulations from the times before the Second Vatican Council governing the use of organs during liturgy. The preface, written by the composer himself, quoted in full, is also the source of valuable information, as well as his intriguing comments to several pieces in the collection discussed in the article. In spite of all that, there are many questions that still remain unanswered, which opens the way to further speculations and interpretations.

Szkolna znajomość Elizy Pawłowskiej i Marii Wasiłowskiej byłaby w ich biografiach nic nie znaczącym epizodem, gdyby nie twórczość literacka Orzeszkowej i „odkrycie” Konopnickiej – poetki przez autorkę Marty na przełomie 1878/1879 roku. Orzeszkowa wspierała Konopnicką w początkach jej kariery artystycznej, broniła przed atakami konserwatywno-katolickiej krytyki, wydała „fragmenty dramatyczne” Z przeszłości (1881), czytała z upodobaniem kolejne zbiory wierszy, uczyła się ich na pamięć, włączała do listów, cytowała i parafrazowała, a w lutym 1909 roku przygotowała w Grodnie wieczór literacko-artystyczny poświęcony jej twórczości. Przez 40 prawie lat toczył się ukryty w listach dialog Orzeszkowej z liryką Konopnickiej. Obie pisarki jednak – mimo usiłowań autorki Nad Niemnem – pozostały sobie duchowo obce, nie zbliżyły się emocjonalnie do siebie: Orzeszkowej życie zamykało się w kręgu grodzieńskiej codzienności, żywot Konopnickiej wypełniały podróże po Europie i związek z Marią Dulębianką. Zapewniały się wzajemnie o przyjaźni i miłości, ale żyły własnymi sprawami. Ów fascynujący dwugłos utrwalony został w korespondencji pisarek.
Eliza Pawłowska’s and Maria Wasiłowska’s school relationship would have been an insignificant in their biographies if she (the author of Marta) had not become a writer and had not discovered Konopnicka as a poet (1878/1879). Orzeszkowa supported Konopnicka at the beginnings of her artistic career, defended from attacks of the conservative-catholic press. Orzeszkowa also published ‘dramatic fragments’ Z przeszłości (1881), read with special liking Konopnicka’s collections of poems, she even memorized them, included in letters, quoted and paraphrased. In February 1909, she prepared in Grodno a soirée devoted to Konopnicka’s artistic work. For almost forty years Orzeszkowa was conducting a dialogue with Konopnicka’s lyric poetry which was hidden in her letters. However, both of the writers, in spite of Nad Niemnem author’s attempts, remained intellectually indifferent and it did not bring them emotionally closer together: Orzeszkowa’s life was limited to the daily occurrence in Grodno, Konopnicka’s existence was filled by journeys around Europe and the relationship with Maria Dulębianka. They assured each other of mutual friendship and love, but they lived their own life. This fascinating dialogue was commemorated in both writers’ correspondence.

Celem artykułu jest rekonstrukcja – na podstawie listów Elizy Orzeszkowej – relacji pomiędzy pisarką a Henrykiem Sienkiewiczem. Informacje o artystycznej i prywatnej biografii Sienkiewicza oraz jego utworach pojawiają się w epistolografii Orzeszkowej od roku 1877 i powracają aż do marca 1909 roku. Kilkuletni okres admirowania dzieł pisarza przez Orzeszkową i dystansu z jego strony kończy się w roku 1880 wskutek zakwestionowania przez Sienkiewicza wartości wileńskich wydawnictw autorki. Brak wzajemnej sympatii między pisarzami nie przeszkodził Orzeszkowej dostrzegać artystycznej maestrii Sienkiewicza. Podkreślała wszakże, że zapoznaje on filozoficzno-duchową istotę ludzkiego losu. W roku 1903, w czasie trwania antysienkiewiczowskiej kampanii, dokonała jednak jednoznacznej obrony wartości twórczości Sienkiewicza, nazywając go „artystą największym”.
This article aims to reconstruct – on the basis of Eliza Orzeszkowa’s letters – the relationship between the authoress and Henryk Sienkiewicz. Information about his artistic and personal biography as well as his works appears in Orzeszkowa’s epistolography since 1877, and returns until March 1909. Several years’ period of admiring Sienkiewicz’s works by Orzeszkowa and a distance on his part ended in 1880 as a result of the fact that Sienkiewicz questioned Orzeszkowa’s Vilnius editorial works. Lack of mutual liking between the writers did not prevent Orzeszkowa to see Sienkiewicz’s artistic mastery. She emphasized that he introduces a philosophical and spiritual essence of the human condition. In 1903, during the anti-Sienkiewicz campaign, she made an unambiguous defense of his works calling him “the greatest artist”.

Przestępcza działalność Maternusa, uciekiniera z armii rzymskiej, któremu udało się zebrać wokół siebie liczną grupę ludzi wykluczonych poza nawias prawa, uległa przeobrażeniu w otwarty bunt, który był wymierzony w Kommodusa. W niniejszym tekście została nakreślona rekonstrukcja okoliczności, które towarzyszyły formalnemu przekwalifikowaniu dezerterów i pospolitych bandytów we ‘wrogów Rzymu’. Przeanalizowanie przebiegu tych wydarzeń nie byłoby możliwe bez uwzględniania źródeł literackich, epigraficznych, jak i tych z zakresu prawa rzymskiego. Jedynie uwzględnienie wszystkich dostępnych świadectw łączących się z tym zagadnieniem daje szansę, aby poddać go krytycznej i wieloaspektowej analizie. Bez takiego podejścia nie byłoby też możliwe zweryfikowanie obowiązującego w tym zakresie stanu wiedzy i zaproponowanie nieco odmiennej interpretacji.
The article describes circumstances in which ‘the war with the deserters’ took place in the mid-180s AD in the Roman state. Criminal activity of Maternus, a deserter from the Roman army, who managed to surround himself with a large group of people excluded from the boundaries of legality, was transformed into an open rebellion against Commodus. Reconstruction of the circumstances outlined in the article that accompanied the formal requalifying the deserters and common outlaws as the ‘enemies of Rome’ would not be possible without including literary and epigraphic sources, as well as those referring to the Roman law. Only after having taken into account all the available evidence related to this topic can one provide a critical and multifaceted analysis of the history. Rejecting this approach would not allow to verify the current state of knowledge in this area, and therefore, to offer a slightly different interpretation.

Artykuł ukazuje, w jaki sposób teksty postmodernistyczne próbują reinterpretować klasykę filmową. Jednym z takich sposobów jest wprowadzenie przez twórców (braci Coen) w obręb tekstu filmowego kategorii historyczności. Rozumiana jest ona zarówno jako forma rekonstrukcji przeszłości, jak i parawan, za którym toczy się dyskurs dotyczący problemów współczesnego świata. Autor polemizuje z obecnymi w refleksji badawczej tezami negującymi możliwość generowania przez estetykę postmodernistyczną znaczeń wychodzących poza obręb tekstu. W interpretacji filmu Bracie, gdzie jesteś? Skupień koncentruje się więc na tych aspektach doświadczania historyczności, które są świadectwem przekroczenia „powierzchniowego” czytania znaczeń w tekście postmodernistycznym. W tym celu autor wybiera takie problemy jak: kwestia fałszywej adaptacji, nawiązania gatunkowe do kina lat 30., rola muzyki jako nośnika wyobrażeń o przeszłości, a także bezpośrednie odniesienie do matrycy, na której są budowane sensy filmu braci Coen, czyli klasycznego obrazu Prestona Sturgesa Podróże Sullivana.
The article shows how postmodern works try to reinterpret classic film. One such method is the introduction by the artists (the Coen brothers) into the film text a category of historicity. It is understood as a form of reconstruction of the past, as well as a screen behind which the discourse on the problems of the modern era takes place. The author disagrees with the theses present in contemporary research that negate the possibility of the postmodern aesthetic generating meaning that extends beyond the sphere of the text. In his interpretation of O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) Skupień focuses on those aspects of experiencing historicity, which extend beyond the surface reading of meanings in a postmodern text. The author examines issues such as: the question of false adaptation, references to 1930s cinema, the role of music as a vehicle for our ideas regarding the past, and a direct reference to the matrix upon which the meaning of Coen brothers’ film is built: i.e. the classic film of Preston Sturges – Sullivan's Travels.

Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons in Gaul, only in few places of his Adversus haereses gives us a glimpse at social activity of the Valentinians. In Adversus haereses III 15, 2 he portrays them, speaking to „communes et ecclesiasticos”. Using such a form, the Valentinians do not tend to distinguish non-gnostic members of the Church from their inner circle, as Irenaeus tries to present it, shifting very smoothly from communes to simpliciores. They underline rather the common share of all Christians in the Church, even if some of them still need some deeper exposition of the truth to fully participate in it.

The article, referring to the texts about crowd by Le Bon and Maria Konopnicka, presents the history of the modern subject who discovers wildness surrounding him. Recognizing wildness, the authors of the end of the 19th century reached for evolutionary logic, to be precise to the parameter of biological races treating the phenomenon of “crowd” as a sign of wildness. According to this logic, crowd became a kind of “desocialized horde” (Konopnicka), social “heap”, which was subject to temporary “regress”. Modern mind was then defined by street crowd through the discourse of natural sciences falling into an impassable aporia: lower – higher.

Celem pracy jest przedstawienie Diety Dobrych Produktów (DDP), która umożliwia wycofywanie stanów zapalnych i w konsekwencji redukcję dolegliwości bólowych w systemie mięśniowo-powięziowym. Ma to ogromne znaczenie na mechanizm uszczelniania błon na poziomie komórkowym w przewodzie pokarmowym oraz w górnych drogach oddechowych. Opisywane oddziaływanie za pomocą Diety Dobrych Produktów ma doprowadzić do stanu bez objawów chorobowych, a jednocześnie poprawy stanu zdrowia pacjenta. Obserwacje pacjentów z dolegliwościami bólowymi wykazują ogromne znaczenie wpływu DDP na wspomaganie terapii mięśniowo-powięziowej oraz zwiększenie skuteczności profilaktyki schorzeń narządu ruchu. Aktualnie dużym problemem są zaburzenia w odżywieniu organizmu poprzez trudności z wchłanialnością witamin i mikroelementów. Dlatego odpowiednia współpraca dietetyka i fizjoterapeuty daje możliwość poprawy ukrwienia systemu mięśniowo-powięziowego, efektywną redukcję stanów zapalnych i ustąpienie bólów mięśniowo-powięziowych. Praca ma charakter przeglądowy.

Celem niniejszego artykułu jest omówienie barokowych tekstów, które dotyczą wyeksponowanego w ewangelii wątku obrzezania. W kulturze religijnej dzieciństwo Jezusa „wytwarzało” znaki odwołujące się do warstwy alegorycznej i symbolicznej. To przede wszystkim żydowski rytuał obrzezania zostaje przywołany przez siedemnastowiecznych twórców. Okazuje się, że odgrywa on ważną rolę w poetyckich rozważaniach, które odwołują się do motywów związanych z okresem świat Bożego Narodzenia, wchodzą w dialog z tradycją religijną (czy teologiczną), próbującą uchwycić znaczenia przypisywane obrzezaniu Jezusa.
The aim of this article is to discuss the baroque texts that are concerned with the theme of circumcision as described in the gospel. In religious culture, Jesus’ childhood “produced” signs referring to the allegorical and symbolic layer. It is primarily the Jewish ritual of circumcision that was invoked by seventeenth-century authors. It turns out that it plays an important role in poetic considerations that refer to motifs related to the Christmas period, enter into a dialogue with the religious (or theological) tradition, trying to grasp the meanings attributed to the circumcision of Jesus.

The aim of this study was to sum up the experiences gained during twelve-year research on effects of using educational balls called ‘edubal’ in PE classes in grades 1 to 3 of the primary school (i.e. children aged 7 to 10). The research was carried out in Poland an in Germany. The authors focused their attention on objectives and tasks of contemporary education of children aged 7 to 10 – first of all supporting and stimulating comprehensive development of children, especially with regard to improving coordinative motor abilities which determine, inter alia, reading and writing skills. Employment of ‘edubal’ education balls in early school education (grades 1 to 3 of the primary school) activates cognitive, emotional and physical spheres of a child and hence contributes to the integration of the subject content. The children while participating in PE classes with the use of education balls learn about letters, spelling rules, colours, mathematical signs and punctuation marks as well as numerous rules which are useful in linguistic and mathematical education and they shape their coordination abilities and improve physical skills. Moreover, they also develop their coordination abilities. ‘Edubal’ education balls have a much wider scope of application than it was the case twelve years ago. They are also used in occupational therapy of disabled persons and in work with dyslectic children who attend therapeutic schools.

This Article investigates how the European Court of Human Rights becomes competent to make decisions in cases concerning (or taking roots in) 'historical situations' preceding the ratification of the European Convention by a given Member State or even the enactment of the Convention. 'Historical situations' refer to events that occurred in the period of Second World War or shortly thereafter. In all such cases, the preliminary question arises whether the Court is competent temporally (ratione temporis) to deal with the application. This group of cases concerned usually allegations touching upon the right to life and the right to property. The Court had to decide if the allegation in question related to a temporally closed event (making the Court not competent) or rather to a continuous violation (where the Court could adjudicate). A specific set of legal questions arose vis-a-vis the right to life, first of all that of the autonomy of the procedural obligation to conduct an efficient investigation. The Strasbourg case law did not provide a clear answer. However, following two crucial judgements rendered by the Grand Chamber, the Court has established an interesting legal framework. Article analyses also two other situations having a historical dimension: bringing to justice those accused of war crimes or other crimes under international law (in light of the alleged conflict with the principle of nullum crimes sine lege) and pursuing authors of pro-Nazi statements or speech denying the reality of Nazi atrocities.
