The study discusses the issues of low durability of dies used in the first operation of producing a valve type forging from high nickel steel assigned for the application in motor truck engines. The analyzed process of manufacturing the exhaust valve forgings is realized in the coextrusion technology, followed by forging in closed dies. This process is difficult to master, mainly due to elevated adhesion of the charge material (high nickel steel - NCF3015) to the tool substrate as well as very high abrasive wear of the tool, most probably caused by the dissolution of hard carbide precipitates during the charge heating. A big temperature scatter of the charge during the heating and its short presence in the inductor prevents microstructure homogenization of the bearing roller and dissolution of hard precipitates. In effect, this causes an increase of the forging force and the pressures in the contact, which, in extreme cases, is the cause of the blocking of the forging already at the beginning of the process. In order to analyze this issue, complex investigations were conducted, which included: numerical modelling, dilatometric tests and hardness measurements. The microstructure examinations after the heating process pointed to lack of structure repeatability; the dilatometric tests determined the phase transformations, and the FEM results enabled an analysis of the process for different charge hardness values. On the basis of the conducted analyzes, it was found that the batch material heating process was not repeatable, because the collected samples showed a different amount of dissolved carbides in the microstructure, which translated into different hardnesses (from over 300 HV to 192 HV). Also, the results of numerical modeling showed that lower charge temperature translates into greater forces (by about 100 kN) and normal stresses (1000 MPa for the nominal process and 1500 MPa for a harder charge) and equivalent stresses in the tools (respectively: 1300 MPa and over 1800 MPa), as well as abrasive wear (3000 MPa mm; 4500 MPa mm). The obtained results determined the directions of further studies aiming at improvement of the production process and thus increase of tool durability.

The geothermal potential is challenging to assess, as on the one hand it requires subsurface parametric description; on another – the variable surface influences the potential and geological conditions. In the article, the author presents a novel method for assessing geothermal potential and its environmental impact. The procedure is implemented to evaluate the geothermal potential of the Lublin trough. Geological modelling and GIS analyses are used to determine prospective areas where geothermal water accessibility and sufficient head demand occur in the direct vicinity. Maximal geothermal heat production is estimated, and upon that – possible avoided emissions of air pollutants. The study results indicate that this region's geothermal resources are of low temperature (<50°C), so the only opportunity for exploitation is the direct use of geothermal water in objects or the operation of ultra-low-temperature district heating systems. The main geothermal energy production potential of the Lublin trough is in its northern part, close to the Warszawa trough and nearby main fracture zones. In total, up to 300 GWh of geothermal heat per year might be produced and consumed in the study area if residential and commercial objects could take advantage of ultra-low-temperature district heating system. It would lead to locally significant limitation of air pollutant emissions and decreased fossil fuel consumption.

Opis:
Improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings is ensured by improving the thermal protection characteristics and the wider introduction of control tools. In order to take into account the influence of individualisation of operating conditions, the study of the regulation of heating distribution of a single-pipe system with bypassed heating devices of a 5-storey typical for Ukraine mass building of the 80s after thermos-modernisation for conditions in Kyiv and Warsaw (Poland) was carried out. On the basis of the simulation model created in the Mathcad software environment for design/rated and average climatic conditions, the influence of internal heat flows into adjacent rooms on the distribution of energy consumption, changes in internal air temperature under the influence of local changes in the heating device flow coefficients were studied. The developed approaches, and the results obtained on the influence of local regulation of devices of vertical single-pipe heating systems can be used to clarify the distribution of energy consumption for heating between individual zones of apartment buildings.

Thermochemical treatment processes are used to produce a surface layer of the workpiece with improved mechanical properties. One of the important parameters during the gas nitriding processes is the temperature of the surface. In thermochemical treatment processes, there is a problem in precisely determining the surface temperature of heat-treated massive components with complex geometries. This paper presents a simulation of the heating process of a die used to extrude aluminium profiles. The maximum temperature differences calculated in the die volume, on the surface and at the most mechanically stressed edge during the extrusion of the aluminum profiles were analysed. The heating of the die was simulated using commercial transient thermal analysis software. The numerical calculations of the die assumed a boundary condition in the form of the heat transfer coefficient obtained from experimental studies in a thermochemical treatment furnace and the solution of the nonstationary and non-linear inverse problem for the heat conduction equation in the cylinder. The die heating analysis was performed for various heating rates and fan settings. Major differences in the surface temperature and in the volume of the heated die were obtained. Possible ways to improve the productivity and control of thermochemical treatment processes were identified. The paper investigates the heating of a die, which is a massive component with complex geometry. This paper indicates a new way to develop methods for the control of thermochemical processing of massive components with complex geometries.

In this second part, the pulse sources of heat, dependences among the intensive parameters of the friction process – temperature, unit pressures, friction velocity – and wear intensity, and some physical properties of the materials of solids in friction are presented. The flux densities are described in extensive quantities across the elementary surface dF of a nominal contact of solids. The thermodynamic criterion of galling is formulated, and the temperature characteristic of minimum wear and maximum resistance to wear is established. Minimum and maximum wear intensities and the specific work of wear are determined. It is proven that a temperature measured in a selected point of friction couple element does not uniquely characterise thermal processes in a tribological system. However, it does characterise the maximum gradient of temperatures measured in at least two points situated as close to a friction contact as possible. A method of determining unit real pressures is proposed. The presence of a cooling effect in the process of tribological wear is disclosed. Wear is interpreted as a disintegration of a solid caused by volumetric and superficial mechanical work. A system of new wear measures is suggested.
W drugiej części pracy przedstawiono impulsowe źródła ciepła, ustalono zależności między intensywnymi parametrami procesu tarcia – temperaturą, naciskami jednostkowymi, prędkością tarcia a intensywnością zużywania i niektórymi własnościami fizycznymi materiałów trących się ciał. Opisano gęstości strumieni wielkości ekstensywnych przepływających przez elementarną powierzchnię dF styku nominalnego ciał. Sformułowano termodynamiczne kryterium zacierania, ustalono temperaturę charakterystyczną dla minimalnego zużycia i maksymalnej odporności na zużywanie. Ustalono maksymalne i minimalne wartości intensywności zużywania oraz graniczne wartości pracy właściwej zużycia. Wykazano, że temperatura zmierzona w wybranym punkcie elementu pary tarciowej nie charakteryzuje jednoznacznie procesów cieplnych zachodzących w systemie tribologicznym, lecz maksymalny gradient temperatur, zmierzonych w co najmniej dwóch punktach położonych możliwie blisko styku tarciowego. Zaproponowano sposób wyznaczania jednostkowych nacisków rzeczywistych. Ujawniono występowanie efektu chłodzenia w procesie zużywania tribologicznego. Zużywanie zinterpretowano jako rozdrabnianie ciała stałego, wywołane wykonaniem pracy mechanicznej objętościowej i powierzchniowej. Zaproponowano system nowych miar zużycia.

The waste warm waters from power plants, owing to their temperature regime (25–38°C) and the volumes of discharge, allow for their use for heating of open ground areas in agriculture. Underground heating by such water is a new, special heat and irrigation method which enables not only purposeful regulation of temperature conditions of the crop growing environment, but also dissipates heat in the soil, thus cooling the water for its reuse. This makes it possible to reduce the thermal pollution of water sources.

Opis:
Thermal error always exists in a machine tool and accounts for a large part of the total error in the machine. Thermal displacement in X-axis on a CNC lathe controlled based on a rapid heating system is presented in this paper. Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) heating plates are installed on the X-axis of the machine. A control temperature system is constructed for rapid heating which further helps the thermal displacement to quickly reach stability. The system then continuously maintains stable compensation of the thermal error. The presented rapid heating technique is simpler than the compensation of machine thermal errors by interference in the numerical control system. Results show that the steady state of the thermal displacement in the X-axis can be acquired in a shorter time. In addition, thermal errors in constant and varying working conditions could be significantly reduced above 80% and 60%, respectively, compared to those without using the rapid heating. Therefore, the proposed method has a high potential for application on the CNC lathe machine for improving its precision.

Purpose: The paper discussed the effect of heat treatment on electroless nickel-yttria-stabilised zirconia (Ni-YSZ) cermet coating. Ni-YSZ cermet coating has potential applications such as cutting tools, thermal barriers, solid oxide fuel anode, and various others. The compatibility of ceramic YSZ and metallic nickel in terms of the mechanical properties such as hardness by varying the heating temperature, time and ceramic particle size is highlighted. Design/methodology/approach: Ni-YSZ cermet coating was deposited onto a highspeed steel substrate using the electroless nickel co-deposition method. The temperature and time were varied in a range of 300-400°C and 1-2 hours, respectively. The microhardness measurements were carried out using a Vickers microhardness tester (Shimadzu) according to ISO 6507-4. The surface characterisation of the cermet coating was carried out using JOEL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) JSM 7800F. The crystallographic structure of materials was analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) Bruker D8 Advance instrument. Findings: It was found that the microhardness of Ni-YSZ cermet coating with the ratio of 70:30, respectively, is directly proportional to the heating temperature and time. Heating the Ni-YSZ cermet coating at 300°C from room temperature (rtp) to 1 hour shows a 12% microhardness increment, while from 1 to 2 hours gives a 19% increment. Compared to heating at 350°C and 400°C, the increment is more significant at 33% and 49% for rtp to 1 hour and 8% and 16% for 1 to 2 hours, respectively. In addition, the effect of varying YSZ particle size in the Ni-YSZ cermet gave response differently for heating temperature and heating time. Research limitations/implications: The paper is only limited to the discussion of the heat treatment effect on Ni-YSZ cermet coating hardness property. The tribological effect will be in future work. Practical implications: The microhardness data may vary due to the Vickers microhardness force applied and the amount of ceramic particle incorporation and phosphorus content in the nickel matrix. Originality/value: The value of this work is the compatibility of the ceramic YSZ and metallic nickel matrix in terms of mechanical properties, such as hardness, upon heat treatment.

Steel loss related to the formation of scale is a parameter that is of great importance in the charge heating process. The value of steel loss determined by the thickness of the scale layer affects the intensity of the heat transfer process in the heating furnace, but also constitutes a significant element in the heat-material balance. Reducing the loss of steel during charge heating has a positive effect on heat consumption and material losses, which is extremely important in the context of energy and resource savings, the main elements of sustainable development processes. The methodology of determining the loss of steel to scale in an industrial heating furnace is presented in the paper. The results of calculations for various charge temperatures at the entrance to the furnace are presented. The influence of furnace operating conditions on steel loss is discussed.

Opis:
The temperature-stress state of the concrete facade wall with a window opening, which is the external enclosing structure of the room with a steel heating device, was investigated by the method of numerical modeling. Estimated studies were performed for winter period when the heating system of the building is functioning. According to the results of solving the system of equations of thermal stress and equation of thermal conductivity, the temperature distribution over the wall volume and distribution of normal and tangential stresses were determined. Areas of the wall where these stresses are maximum were identified. The research was performed for cases of both, absence and presence of a heat-insulating layer on the outer surface of the facade wall. From comparison of the results obtained for these two options, it follows that the external thermal insulation coating not only helps to reduce dissipative heat loss through the facade wall, but also reduces the absolute values of stresses in the concrete wall arising resulting from temperature deformations. In some cases, the sign of stresses changes from stretching (wall without external insulation) to compressive (wall with insulation).

The axial-symmetrical domain of biological tissue heated by an external heat source is considered. The problem is solved using the implicit scheme of the finite difference method. At the stage of numerical computations, the analytical relationships taken from the literature describing changes in parameters are taken into account.

Heat pumps are known as zero-emission heating and cooling devices at the point of energy production. In order to exploit their advantages, they are combined with low-temperature heating systems. Using the example of a residential building in five climatic zones in Poland and one in Ukraine, systems analyses were carried out, in which heat into rooms is supplied in two different ways: low-temperature radiators and thermally active ceilings. The energy demand for heating, cooling and domestic hot water preparation was calculated. The seasonal coefficient of performance of the ground source heat pump was estimated to compare the systems. The results of the analysis confirmed that the thermo-active ceiling (with a flow temperature of 35°C) ensures a lower final energy demand when it works throughout the year in the heating and natural cooling mode compared to the low-temperature radiators (with a flow temperature of 45°C) which facilitate only the heating mode in the heating season. Performance analysis demonstrated differences in final electric energy demand from 8% in the I climatic zone to 9% in the V climatic zone in Poland and 10% in Ukraine.

The paper presents the results of the examination of the heating up of the basic elements of the actuating system of a single-disc lapping machine with standard kinematics, intended for machining flat surfaces. The increase of the temperature of the drive assembly, rollers and separator guide ring, as well as the lapping disc and machined elements were analysed. Heating up of the machining system was examined during the machining of a cast iron tool and flat surface lapping. Lapping is one of the methods of abrasive machining applied during the individual fitting of elements in assembly or when a technological compensator is used. The increase of temperature in the machining system influences, among others, the dimensional accuracy of lapped metal elements.
Przedstawiono wyniki badań nagrzewania się podstawowych elementów układu wykonawczego docierarki jednotarczowej o standardowej kinematyce do obróbki powierzchni płaskich. Analizowano przyrost temperatury zespołu napędowego, rolek i pierścieni prowadzących separatory oraz tarczy docierającej i obrabianych elementów. Badano nagrzewanie się układu obróbkowego podczas wyrównywania żeliwnego narzędzia i docierania powierzchni płaskich. Docieranie jest jedną z metod obróbki ściernej stosowaną podczas indywidualnego dopasowywania elementów w montażu lub przy wykorzystaniu kompensatora technologicznego. Przyrost temperatury w układzie obróbkowym ma między innymi wpływ na dokładność wymiarową docieranych elementów metalowych.

In the paper the methods of laser hardening of external tool corners on the example of bending tools for press brakes were presented. The disadvantages and limitations of the most commonly used techniques for guiding a hardening laser light beam are presented, i.e.: (i) in one pass parallel to the tool corner plane symmetry, (ii) in two passes perpendicular to the surfaces adjacent to the corner, and (iii) in one pass perpendicular to the surface adjacent to the corner by using two diode lasers. The microstructure of the tool material after laser and induction hardening was compared. A significant influence of the heating method on the microstructure of the tool material after hardening was demonstrated. The original method of hardening the outer corners of bending tools using a hardening laser beam splitter was subject to a more detailed analysis. The analysis of material heating in simultaneously hardened corner area and adjacent surfaces was carried out using the Marc/Mentat software based on the finite element method. By analyzing the temperature distributions it was shown that if a beam splitter was used, obtaining a continuous and uniform hardened layer (i.e. with comparable hardness, depth, without tempered or non-tempered areas) in the area of the outer corner and adjacent surfaces was possible. In practice, achieving such a layer is conditioned by the correct selection of the size of the k parameter which determines the distance between the separated beams of laser light. Depending on the geometry of the hardened tool corner and the parameters of the hardening laser beam, this distance can be determined experimentally or on the basis of numerical simulation.
