Opis:
Objectives Monitoring tobacco use is one of the most important tobacco control interventions recommended by the World Health Organization. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use in a nationwide sample of adults in Poland, as well as to identify factors associated with smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. Material and Methods This nationwide crosssectional survey was carried out in February 2–4, 2024 using the computer-assisted web interviewing method. The study questionnaire included 17 closed questions on smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. A sample of 1080 adults was selected using a non-probability quota sampling method. Results Data were collected from 1080 adults, age M±SD 48.4±15.5 years, 53% females. Past 30-day smoking was declared by 30.4% of adults in Poland, including 24.5% of daily smokers. Ever e-cigarette use was declared by 33% of respondents, and 20.6% had ever tried heated tobacco. Past 30-day e-cigarette use was declared by 15.2% of adults, wherein 5.9% were daily e-cigarette users. Past 30-day heated tobacco use was declared by 10.9% of respondents, wherein 4.9% were daily heated tobacco users. One-tenth of adults were dual users (cigarette and e-cigarette or heated tobacco), and 6.5% were past 30-day triple users. Age 40–59 years, having less than higher education, and bad economic status were significantly associated with daily smoking (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years, having less than higher education, and active occupational status (employment/ self-employment) were associated with daily e-cigarette use (p < 0.05). Age 18–39 years and active occupational status were associated with daily heated tobacco use (p < 0.05). Conclusions This study provides comprehensive epidemiological data on the current prevalence of smoking, e-cigarette use, and heated tobacco use. The introduction of e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products evoked changes in social behaviors related to nicotine use.

Opis:
ObjectivesSetting and implementing occupational exposure limits (OELs) is one of the measures taken to protect workers from adverse effects of hazardous chemicals. The EU Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) introduced an additional kind of exposure guidance values for workers; namely, the derived no effect level (DNEL) for workers’ inhalation exposure (worker DNEL). About 500 substances have a Swedish OEL, while roughly 5000 substances have a worker DNEL derived by REACH registrants. This work aims to investigate how the Swedish OELs and worker DNELs are perceived at Swedish workplaces, and whether worker DNELs are considered a possible alternative to OELs when the latter are lacking.Material and MethodsAn online questionnaire was designed and sent to Swedish companies identified through the European Chemicals Agency’s database of registered substances (N = 126) and the Swedish Chemicals Agency’s registry of companies that import or manufacture notifiable chemical products (N = 227). The response rates were 52% and 38%, respectively.ResultsThe respondents stated that they were using the Swedish OELs and most of them considered these to be a suitable risk management tool. As about one-third of the respondents expressed that they had some experience in using substances without the Swedish OELs, there are certain data gaps that worker DNELs may fill. One-third of the respondents familiar with worker DNELs stated that they would consider using worker DNELs for substances without the Swedish OELs. However, nearly half of the respondents reported to be unfamiliar with worker DNELs.ConclusionsPoor familiarity with DNELs may pose an obstacle to properly recognizing DNELs’ potential as well as the possible limitations of individual DNELs. There is a need for education about DNELs, as well as for tools facilitating the evaluation of DNELs and OELs from other sources in cases where the applicable Swedish OEL is lacking.

A survey of Deoxynivalenol and Zearalenone content in commercial dry foods for growing dogs. The Polish market of commercial dry dog food for growing dogs of small breeds was surveyed for the presence of DON and ZEN with its metabolites α- and β-zearalenol (α-, β-ZOL). LC/ /MS method was applied for 6 randomly selected foods. The low levels of toxins found, gives overall picture of the safe segment of the market. The content of masked α-zearalenol, however, from the perspective of long term consumption of small amounts may pose a health risk for the reproductive system of bitches.

Opis:
Goal: To examine the impact of nutrition and health claims on Polish consumers' buying attitudes and intentions. Design/methodology/approach: A questionnaire-based survey was conducted with a group of 200 Polish consumers using the CAWI method, selected by means of purposive, "snowball" sampling. The survey form consisted of 4 parts: A — evaluation of photos of sample products with nutrition claims, health claims, both type of claims, or no claims (control group); B — answering questions about food labelling and the use of nutrition claims; C — opining on health and nutrition claims presented as separate, non-product-specific messages. Findings: The perception of the health and nutrition quality of products with health and nutrition claims was found to be strongly dependent on the consumer's attitude towards a given type of food. The presence of claims seems to have a neutral effect on the perception of the taste of products connoted with healthy eating, but a negative influence in the case of products considered unhealthy. Despite the great interest in the information contained in the labels of food products and healthy eating, Polish consumers still display only a slight degree of knowledge about such claims. At the same time, they seem to be skeptical of the reliability of the health and nutritional- related information on the packaging of food products, which is not correlated with their level of knowledge on the subject. The presence of claims is not decisive for consumers in terms of making purchasing decisions, and claims are less important to them than the use-by-date or the price of the product. Also, claims do not mean the product is perceived by consumers as less caloric. Practical implications: In order to meet the expectations of modern consumers, food producers should consider placing both types of claims on labels, as well as undertaking other promotional activities that draw consumers' attention to the health and nutrition benefits of their products. Due to the fact that a good knowledge of and interest in healthy eating does not translate into a better understanding of nutrition claims, it is necessary to increase consumer awareness of food law. Due to consumer skepticism about health and nutritional-related information, food producers should ensure that the information on their product labels is as consistent as possible. Originality and value: This is one of the few studies conducted among Polish food consumers that examine how the presence of health and nutrition claims on food labels affect perceptions and purchasing intentions regarding food products.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań ankietowych dotyczących możliwości zastosowania wirtualnej rzeczywistości w szkoleniach w dziedzinie bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy w budownictwie.
Virtual reality is a world created using computer techniques to create simulations of real-world phenomena and is increasingly used in many industries. Thanks to the use of the virtual training environment, an employee can see, feel and ‘survive’ certain scenarios, accident situations in detail and learn what the consequences may be if they behave incorrectly in the work environment. This paper presents the results of a survey on the feasibility of using virtual reality in health and safety training in the construction industry.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the self-care strategies undertaken by Polish nurses, and more specifically: to assess the participants’ self-care strategies; to check self-medication patterns in the study group; and to analyze compliance with medical recommendations regarding pharmacotherapy.Material and MethodsA quantitative and cross-sectional survey was conducted to examine the phenomenon of interest. The study employed a questionnaire survey with an independently designed questionnaire as a research tool. A total of 446 registered nurses taking part in different professional training courses for nurses in January–June 2018 who agreed to participate were included in the study.ResultsThe findings of this study reveal generally poor self-care strategies and compliance with medical recommendations among Polish nurses. The most frequent health behaviors among the surveyed nurses were caring for personal hygiene and a healthy diet. About 31% of the nurses confirmed supplements use. The most common reasons for taking supplements concerned the prevention of vitamin and mineral deficiencies (77.5%), and boosting of the immune system (49.3%). The most popular supplements included packs of vitamins (57.2%), single vitamin D3 (33.3%) and magnesium (31.2%). The vast majority of participants (79.8%) took some kind of over-the-counter drugs (OTCs) in the last 6 months, most often painkillers and flu medications, relying most frequently on the information included on the drug leaflets. The analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between declared OTC use and age, marital status, years of professional experience and economic status. Overall, 26.9% of the study participants declared the use of both supplements and OTCs, while 16.4% of the participants used neither supplements nor OTCs.ConclusionsSelf-care strategies undertaken by nurses should be seen as an essential factor in their positive therapeutic relationship with patients. The ageing nursing workforce should make all of us increasingly aware that their self-care needs will increase as well.

Opis:
The experience of economically developed countries proves that the quality of actions undertaken in the realm involving the management of the occupational health and safety may substantially contribute the attainment of higher OHS standards. A significant role in the improvement of OHS management quality is played among others by audit surveys of the management system of OHS which is viewed as a form of controlling tool. One of the first solutions of that type was applied in the mining industry in Poland, and they were based on the MERIT survey (Management Evaluation Regarding Itemized Tendencies). The mathematical model applied within the scope of that survey makes it possible to determine assessment indexes (final index WZBP and partial indexes WOPi). The results obtained from the survey carried out on a group of respondents – employees of departments of mining coal – were then used for the prediction of the assessment of the quality of actions undertaken in the area of OHS management (the linear discriminant function was applied as the prediction method).
Istotną rolę w tym zakresie spełniają m. in. badania audytowe systemu zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy będące formą i narzędziem kontrolingu.

Introduction and aim. Sub-centers (SC) are the first contact point with the community with auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM) as the instrument, delivering all the primary health care services. The SCs are under constant criticism for their inability to deliver quality services. This study assessed the preparation of facilities available at the SC to manage high-risk pregnancies (HRP) and to compare the same between rural and tribal blocks of the selected district. Material and methods. This health facility-based cross-sectional observational study was done for 6 months among 276 rural and tribal SC of the Udaipur district by a two-stage random sampling method using an observational checklist to assess the infrastructure and logistics of SCs. Data were analyzed using SPSS 20. Results. The study covered 264 (95.7%) non-24x7 SCs and 12 (4.3%) 24x7 SCs. Only one-third SCs, 93 (33.6%) were situated at the center of the village. Only 151 (54.7%) SCs had attached ANM quarters. All 24x7 SCs and 78.4% of non-24x7 SCs had adequate equipment and infrastructure. Conclusion. Most of the subcentres’ infrastructure and functional equipment was equipped to tackle HRP. Rural SC adhered more than tribal. Most HRPs were tracked and referred to higher centers. Unless we emphasize strengthening SCs, the dream of a healthy nation will remain obscure.

Introduction. Education is a key tool in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Education programmes require monitoring of their effectiveness. Objectives. 1) to introduce postal screening for the assessment of knowledge on CVD risk factors (RFs) for the Polish population, 2) to assess this knowledge in adult residents of Małopolska Voivodeship, and 3) to assess whether knowledge on RFs is related to age, gender, place of residence, level of education and family history of CVD. Materials and method. Anonymous questionnaires were posted to a random sample of 5,000 residents of Małopolska Voivodeship in Poland. Results were presented as proportions of participants who listed RFs correctly. A series of multiple logistic regression models was used to assess the associations of knowledge on RFs with the potential determinants. Results. 1,126 completed questionnaires were returned. Over 35% of respondents could not list a single RF and 14 % listed only 1–2 RFs. About 40% named 3–5 and only 12% listed 6 or more RFs. About a half of the respondents listed incorrectly from 1–8 characteristics as being associated with higher risk of CVD. In the multivariate analysis, knowledge on RFs was not significantly associated with age. Level of education was the strongest determinant of knowledge. Male rural and small town residents had less knowledge, whereas women with a family history of CVD had more knowledge on some CVD RFs. Conclusions. Using a postal questionnaire for the assessment of knowledge of CVD RFs in the population of Małopolska Voivodeship appeared to have serious limitations due to low participation in the study. Despite this, the results of the study indicate that knowledge on CVD RFs is insufficient. Female gender and higher education were related to more prevalent knowledge on RFs. Family history of CVD was related to better knowledge in women only. Male residents of rural areas and small towns had slightly less knowledge on CVD RFs.

Background. The second wave of Novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2) is proving more disastrous than the first because of the new mutant stains. Under these circumstances, vaccination is the only effective solution that can save millions of lives across the globe. Objectives. The present study was conducted to assess the attitude and acceptance/willingness of health care professionals (medical and dental) towards COVID-19 vaccine. Materials and Methods. An online questionnaire survey was conducted among medical and dental professionals working in different hospitals of two states of India. A total of 520 subjects constituted the final sample size. A self-constructed questionnaire (divided into 2 parts) containing 12 questions was administered to obtain information from the subjects regarding their attitude and willingness towards COVID 19 vaccine. Statistical analysis was done using chi-square test and multiple liner regression analysis. Odds ratio with 95% CI were also generated. Statistical significance was set at p≤0.05. Results. Majority of the subjects (67% of dental and 73% of medical) had full confidence on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine. Willingness to get vaccinated was shown by 63% of subjects and 65% had positive attitude towards vaccine. Some subjects (45.5% dental and 48.4% medical) showed concern regarding unforeseen effects of the vaccine. Willingness to get vaccinated was 3.45 higher in subjects who were involved in COVID duties. Subjects giving less preference to natural immunity over vaccine showed more willingness (OR: 2.98) towards getting the vaccine. Conclusion. The findings of the study showed that acceptance and attitude of subjects regarding COVID 19 vaccine was suboptimal as there were various factors which contributed towards subjects’ hesitancy to get vaccinated. There is an utmost need to address various issues regarding vaccine safety to promote high uptake.

Opis:
Background. Osteoporosis is a growing problem facing modern society and currently poses one of the most serious health challenges. It is a progressive skeletal disease characterised by low bone mineral density whose development depends on multiple factors. These principally include increasing age, nutrition, physical activity, endocrine changes, lifestyles, general health condition and taken drugs. Objectives. To assess how much subjects (aged >50 years) are aware of the dangers in contracting osteoporosis along with the effects that lifestyle and dairy product consumption can have on this condition developing. Material and methods. A questionnaire, designed in-house, was used to survey a group of 150 randomly selected individuals aged above 50 years. This was performed in June 2012. Questions were on socio-demographics, milk and dairy product consumption, physical activity as well as assessing knowledge about osteoporosis that included issues such as its incidence, prevention and morbidity. Results. Osteoporosis was established in 60.7% subjects of whom 69.2% were women. Only 9.3% never consumed any dairy products. Physical activity of some kind was undertaken by 77.3% subjects. Within the last year, 38.0% reported having fractures of whom 46.0% had osteoporosis and 25% were healthy. Respondents were aware that consuming dairy products is beneficial to bone health and this awareness was higher among those with osteoporosis. Physical activity was also recognised to be important in preventing this condition. Conclusions. Subjects suffering from osteoporosis had twice as many more fractures than healthy subjects.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Wyniki. 60,7% badanych miało osteoporozę, a 69,2% chorych stanowiły kobiety.
