In 2001 the American Library of Congress spent S 10 million to purchase for its collection one of the more significant examples of vintage cartography - a great world map authored by a German cosmographer and cartographer, Martin Waldseemuller. The map , which was printed in 12 woodcuts, to be combined to a format of 132x236 cm, was published in Saint Die in Lorraine in 1507. It had long been considered to be lost - its only copy was found only in 1900 in prince's library in castle Wolfegg in Wirtemberg. Waldseemuller's map is considered to be the oldest map, which includes the name AMERICA, borrowed from Italian traveler and discoverer Amerigo Vespucci. Waldseemuller placed this name also on his globe, published in the same year (12 segments, 18x34,5 cm). The map and the globe, as well as another very well known work by the same author Cosmographiae Introductio, popularized the name America for the newly discovered part of the world, replacing other names used at that time ( Terra Incognita, Mundus Novus, Terra Nova). Waldseemuller's map and globe are significant in the history of cartography not only because they are the first to use the name America. Waldseemuller's map was the first printed great wall map, which presented a brand new cartographic vision of the world, taking into account the great geographic discoveries of the era. - Źródło:
