The main aim of the study is to present the history and the state of research in Polish medical geography. Its origins are the same as in world geography, i.e. it is associated with non-geographers. However, it was developing very slowly till the mid-1980s. Since then a slow increase in the number of publications has been noted (with a noticeable predominance of studies in disease geography over health geography). But still, it must be emphasised that medical geography in Poland is poorly developed.

Traditionally, applied aspects of human geography are mainly associated with economic geography, regional development and spatial planning. In the debate on the application potential of the discipline, a number of important problems of social, political and cultural geography, relevant to various contemporary processes on a global and regional scale, are marginalized. For this reason, the author undertakes a critical rethinking of the current debate on the applied aspects of research in human geography.          A brief review of the conceptual and institutional development of applied geography in the world and in selected national schools is made. The author also distinguishes two research orientations: 1) strategic orientation – connected to studies carried out at the international, national and macro-regional spatial levels; 2) operational orientation – concerning applied studies undertook on a scale of separate municipalities, cities, neighbourhoods or even separate streets and buildings. Taking an attempt to overcome the narrow understandings of the frameworks of applied human geography, the author presents a new definition and tries to identify the main challenges for geographers that work in the field of Human Geography. Applied aspects of basic directions of human geography from the point of view of their broader interdisciplinary ties are also indicated.

Aim. The aim of the article is to investigate how energy topics are presented in the geography curriculum in Lithuania and how school geography becomes an educational response to the current global challenges related to energy production and consumption. Methods. The article presents research using several methods: review of literature on energy geography and energy literacy, analysis of Lithuanian national curriculum for geography, content analysis of 14 geography textbooks for forms 6–12, expert interview with 9 geography teachers. Results. The empirical research reveals that the national curriculum and textbooks still represent the old energy paradigm with a profound focus on fossil fuel and nuclear energy resources. Meanwhile, the new energy paradigm is realised in the teaching of experienced and qualified teachers who, in addition to the new green energy economy, emphasise environmental and social issues of energy use. Conclusions. The conclusions include observations on necessary changes in teaching energy geography: on the one hand, by revising the formal curriculum and textbooks and integrating concepts of energy literature and new energy developments; on the other hand, by initiating changes in primary and continuous teacher education. Professional development of teachers could include new energy topics, new teaching and learning sources (political debates in media, TV, strategic energy development documents), new teaching and learning strategies and methods.

Opis:
According to contemporary dictionaries Sarmatia is the ancient district between the Vistula River and the Caspian Sea. In Polish geographical literature this name was popular during the Renaissance and remained quite well-known till the end of XIXth century. Till now Sarmatia seems to be present in few English sources, however is much more utilized by authors of geographical publications and editors of cartographical materials in Italy. The areas of ancient Sarmatia are universally called Eastern Europe, Central Europe, or East Central Europe. These expressions are however not proper geographical names, and instead they constitute metageographical creations formulated for ideological and political purposes. They are more and more often contested due to the geopolitical re-orientation in Russia. For these reasons there appears question of what is the exact geographical name for these territories. An answer to this question seems to be possible only when the concepts of Europe and Poland are properly defined, since these two terms are very often used in entirely improper way. For this reason it is necessary to answer the question as to Poland's place in Europe, by pointing to the part of Europe to which Poland belongs. Although Polish society is characterized by a high level of competency in the area of geographical studies, according to the questionaires and polling conducted among the students, Poles themselves are not able to define what Europe is and what exactly defines her territory. To formulate answers to all these questions the author decided to utilize the classical concept of geographical region, which seems to be acceptable from the point of view of modern neoclassical geopolitics. It is tantamount with the ultimate rejection of the widely accepted metageographical concepts of Europe and Poland, whose continued uncritical use stands as an insult to that which is rational, and a negation of empirical argument.

Progressive hybridization of disciplines and specialties upset the identity of geography in modern science, but geography (human geography), as she was, so it is hardly accepted as a social science among scientists. An important role is played by the traditional assignment of the entire geography to natural sciences and greater isolation of human geography in flows of knowledge within the social sciences. The article presents the specificities of the social sciences in the classification of the sciences, the impact of social sciences on past development of geography and contemporary impact of geography on spatial turn in the social sciences.

Today, corporations play an important role in the global, national and local economy. Regardless of the business profile, degree of internationalisation or size, they participate in numerous economic processes, which is why they are the subject of research in geography of industry, especially in geography of enterprises. The main goal of the article is to review research related to corporations in Polish literature on the subject in the field of geography of industry. The author also aims at organising the concept of corporations, presenting closer their classifications, as well as indicating the place of research on corporations in geography. The preparation of the article began with a literature query, as well as an analysis of the existing data (desk research). As a result, the analysis of the concept of a corporation, various types of classifications and divisions of corporations, as well as a literature review of the subject in terms of the corporation’s research issues were made. As the research carried out indicates, in Polish literature on the issues of geography of industry, the researchers who concentrate on corporations look at the concentration of their head offices, theory and location factors, shaping processes and location of production, service and various branches, network connections, strategies implemented by corporations and their organisational forms, processes of corporation influence on international conditions for the development of domestic and regional systems and industrial enterprises, stimulation of inflow of foreign direct investment, the influence of corporations on the shaping of various industrial sectors, export relations, the role of cities in globalisation processes and the location of the corporation and their effects, as well as on corporate CSR activities.

didactics of geography in Czech Republic
Opis:
This paper deals with the issue of the didactics of the Czech lands geography process and the position of geography as a scientific branch in its system. It describes new trends and styles in teaching geography in the Czech Republic. At the same time, it mentions some current teaching difficulties at Czech primary and secondary schools. The first stage of teaching developing theory, the period from 1948 to 1965, is tagged “applied period” (Hájek, 2003). The theory of teaching geography (nowadays called the didactics of geography) was at that time only a pedagogical discipline. It has been focused on searching and working out in detail the middle ground for the methods, the organization forms and materials specified for geography teaching. The period after the year 1990 is called “the period of the transformation of the didactics of geography”. The attention in teaching geography has been focused on new topics, for example the upbringing for the human rights and democracy, multiculturalism, international understanding and peace, informational or worldwide education, etc. The didactics of geography is already a border science, penetrating two systems –geography and pedagogy (Wahla, 1991). Primarily, the task of the scholars in the field of the didactics of geography was searching for an answer to the question: “What type of knowledge should the students be provided with and what are the reasons and methods for that transfer of knowledge?”. The explanation of the influence of the way geography was taught on the student´s development of imagination, thinking and positive relation to their environment was, to some extent, already provided. Similarly, this influence was also observed in the attention to the quality of the teacher, teaching methods and organization of the forms of teaching, teaching environment, and some specific geography tools (maps, books of maps, etc.). The contemporary concept of the didactics of geography comes from the International Geography Union, which declares not only the value of educational geography importance for individual education, but primarily its application in international and environmental nation education context. The determination of basic questions directed at students is also inconsistent. It is crucial that students are able to react to questions like: “Where is it? What is it like? Why is it there? How did it come into existence? What is the influence of it? How should it be adapted to be beneficial for the people and nature at the same time?”. Contemporary geography education should take aim at students´ knowledge and their skills and phrasing progress, creating the basic attitudes and life values, and also the sense of responsibility. The interdisciplinary and broad multidisciplinary of the thematic range guarantees a strong integrating role of geography education in schools. It is essential for the progress and the formation of all cross-sectional topics (Matoušková, 2005). There is more interests in the way the science subjects, including geography, are taught. It is realized primarily through familiarization of the content – relating to students´ daily life and solving actual questions and topics. In geography teaching the emphasis is put both on practice, fieldwork and working in geo-laboratories, and on class-work. Therefore, the basic principles of researchable orientating education as well as the progress of geographical informational systems and their application in geography teaching at primary and secondary schools are fulfilled. Geography as a subject at Czech schools is considered by students to be of mediocre or even low prestige. There are many reasons for that, but the main one is the unqualified and poorly qualified geography teachers. Geography is seen as a subject concerned with toponymic terms. The prestige of geography can be improved by ensuring that teachers are properly qualified and are specialists in their field. Those teachers should be interested in the subject and teach not only the necessary quota (“general knowledge”), but also a notion of “the intertwined aspects of the world”. A geography teacher should help the students understand the global connections, be able to get students interested in traveling and learning about different cultures and occurring differences, as well as teach the students how to be tolerant of something that is foreign to them (Karas, Kuhnlová, 2011). Additional training for teachers is crucial for improving the quality of geography teaching and it should become an integral part of their pedagogical experience.

Industry, still one of the most significant sectors of the economy, is undergoing permanent quantitative and qualitative changes. Therefore it should be the subject of not only business analyses, but also research which more broadly explain our reality in the environmental, social and economic dimensions, noting the more and more complex relations between the elements, sets and even entire systems functioning in various spatial arrangements. The research on the changes in industry structures implemented by Polish researchers representing various fields of science has been an essential element of the cognitive process for many years. Among them are also geographers for whom the spatial aspects (the characteristics and issues) of industrial activity seem particularly significant. However, the issues handled by them mostly regard land areas. Therefore, there is also a strong need for wide-range theoretical and applicable research on the identification of sea and coastal areas functioning on the basis of diversified industrial structures, using the previous academic achievements, including the achievements of the Polish economic sea geography.

The research themes of geography of industry are continually evolving. The dynamic development of this sector of the economy after 1945 in the conditions of the socialist economy, in which the processes of industrialisation of the country were treated as priorities, as well as the processes of economic transformation in Poland after 1989, influencing the changes in the previously developed socio-economic structures, including industry structures, influenced the shaping of the research problem of this sub-discipline of geography in Poland. These changes, leading to the adaptation of these structures to the changing management principles, take place under the influence of impulses from the international environment associated with building a knowledge-based economy and moving from the industrial and post-industrial phase to the informational phase of civilisation development. These essential issues of transformation of industrial structures in the period of economic transformation and the development of a knowledge-based economy have become the subject of interest of many researchers, including economic geographers. The article presents the evolution of the themes and the main directions of research on structural changes in Polish industry in the conditions of transition from the centrally planned economy to market economy. In conclusion, it is shown that Polish geography of industry has undertaken significant scientific and economic problems of structural changes in industry during the period of economic transformation, continually updating its research priorities. Researchers quickly reacted to changes in the legal and political conditions of the functioning of the national economy, despite numerous barriers, related to, among other things, limited access to data on industrial activities, resulting in the lower interest of geographers in industrial research. The paper ends with recommendations regarding future possible research directions and a comprehensive bibliography of the studies.

A textbook plays an important role in modernization of the teaching process and in the achievement of set teaching objectives. From a didactic perspective, very important is the structure of contents that activates a school student via e.g. a set of didactic tasks. It seems important in the context of developing self-study and long-life learning skills of school students. Self-study becomes a necessity in the modern society due to technological advancement and constantly growing requirements of the labour market. The purpose of the research was to determine the degree to which the contents and didactic tasks contained in contemporary geography textbooks facilitate the development of subject-specific skills and key competences. The degree of overcoming deeply-rooted traditional methods of teaching geography to school students and the extent to which the proposed teaching solutions serve as a source of educational innovation for teachers. The research covered 7 out of 11 geography textbooks approved by the Ministry of National Education (MEN) for the first class of lower secondary schools.

Opis:
Understanding, mastering and applying new ideas in geography didactics is the most proper way to achieve a high professionalism in geography education in Bulgaria. Such professionalism implies three prerequisites: a scientifically based (and not only intuitive) professional activity, high and sustainable results and a clear positive attitude towards it. The high professionalism is the required basis for successful solving the current problems of Bulgarian geography education which are of different nature: training and further qualification of working staff, preparation of needed school documentation for thematic subject “Geography and Economy” and the design of research programs and projects in school practice. Undoubtedly, we have to explore the foundations of didactics (its theory and methodology) because it is the starting point for creative problem solving or the implementation of upcoming geography educational tasks. In this context, and against the background of the increasingly higher modern public demands and attitudes towards education, it is necessary to interpret the geography didactics as a science in a new, modern way. In presented paper are examined the essence, subject matter and main issues of geography didactics; scientific tasks and research methods and its place among other sciences. It is also important to outline thetrends of development and scientific potential of geography didactics.
Zrozumienie, opanowanie i zastosowanie nowych pomysłów w dydaktyce geografii to prawdziwy krok w kierunku osiągnięcia wysokiego poziomu profesjonalizmu w edukacji geograficznej w Bułgarii. Przedstawiamy kierunki rozwoju i potencjał naukowy.

Opis:
Wśród tradycyjnych 15 kierunków badań wymieniono m.in.: użytkowanie ziemi, typologię i regionalizację rolnictwa, organizację i strukturę przestrzenną rolnictwa, rolnictwo podmiejskie, rolnicze obszary problemowe, rolnictwo ekologiczne, rolnictwo w planowaniu przestrzennym, rolnictwo Polski i świata. Wyróżniono też 13 kierunków innowacyjnych w badaniach geografii rolnictwa i obszarów wiejskich, np.: nowe metody i techniki badawcze, kształtowanie krajobrazu multisensorycznego, możliwości rozwoju ekoenergetyki, formy i metody poprawy jakości życia i wzrostu kapitału ludzkiego i społecznego, wykorzystanie ICT (technik informacyjno-telekomunikacyjnych), alternatywne źródła dochodów gospodarstw, geografię klastrów innowacji, nową organizację badań geograficznych.
The aim of this article is to identify the current state of research in the field of agriculture geography, i.e. to make a distinction between 5 major periods of research (from the 30’s of the last century up to 2013) in 12 geographical Polish scientific centers. Among the traditional 15 lines of research were distinguished: land use, typology and regionalization of agriculture, organization and spatial structure of agriculture, suburban agriculture, agricultural problem areas, organic farming, agriculture in spatial planning, Poland’s and world agriculture. In the article were also distinguished 13 innovative directions in the geography of agriculture and rural areas, such as new methods and techniques of scientific research, multisensory landscape architecture, opportunities of eco-power industry, forms and methods to improve the quality of life and growth of human and social capital, the use of ICT (information and communication techniques), alternative sources of household income, geography of innovation clusters, a new organization of geographical research. Since the beginning of the 60s of the last century a division in the research in the socio-economic geography of Poland has become noticeable: 1 – geographical and agricultural , 2 – geographical and agricultural and rural areas, 3 – rural areas geography (rural geography). At the same time for the benefit of the integration of geographical sciences, especially of economic geography, adopt a combination agricultural geography and rural areas in one sub-discipline – geography of rural areas (rural geography) ist peculiar.

Opis:
The objective of this paper is to assess and forecast (scenario) changes in effectiveness of geography teaching, taking place as a result of transformation of education system. Assessment of education system reform is based on analysis of the survey conducted among teachers and results of the tests taken by students in their second year in secondary junior schools in 2000 and 2010. The scenario assumes mainly a decrease of teaching level and education quality. Discrepancies between theoretical assumptions and school practice, both in relation to curricula, grading system, school-system funding, supervision and management in education are the main threats to decreasing effectiveness of teaching.

Opis:
The history of Gdansk geography, understood as an academic field of study is relatively short, and dates back to the first half of the twentieth century. However, geographical conditions, location and development of the city on the Vistula, the Baltic Sea, on the coast of the Gulf of Gdansk, leave no doubt as to the need for a very good knowledge of the geography by its residents. In the seventeenth and eighteenth century Gdańsk has become one of the most important centers in the country of culture and science and the implementation of new inventions. Gdańsk, the city of merchants and sailors, is also one of the important centers of plotting maps and atlases issuance of geographical, natural and finally astronomical. First Gdansk Academic Gymnasium, then under the name of Gymnasium Dantiscanum was established relatively late, because only in 1558. The first preserved statute gymnasium provided taught history in conjunction with geography, which from the beginning placed the Gdansk Gymnasium in a row the most distinguished institutions for the development of many disciplines. The first lectures in geography, by Bartholomeus Keckermann, were released under the title of Systema geographicum duobus libris adornatum et audience olim praelectum in 1612. The famous Gdansk Nature Society has been founded in 1742. In one of the first volumes published by the Society can be found to develop Gotffried Reyger devoted to observations weather in the city, based on meteorological data collected from 1,721 years.|After the end of the Second World War, in 1946, two-year Pedagogium in Gdansk-Oliwa was founded section studies geography and natural sciences with the Department of Geography. A year later Pedagogium transformed into the Pedagogical University, which created the Faculty of Life Sciences section of bio-geographical, which conducted a two-way studies of the biology of geography. In 2010, the Institute of Geography moved to the university campus in Gdansk-Oliwa. In the structure of departments geography functioned until 2005, pursuant to the Resolution of the Senate re-created at the Faculty of Biology, Geography and Oceanology Institute of Geography.

Opis:
The article is a review of the research conducted in Poland on geography of enterprise, understood as a sub-discipline within the scope of socio-economic geography, including research on the behaviour of economic entities, especially large ones, in geographical space. First, the fundamental methodological issues, including terminology, were discussed and then the source query was made. It allowed for identifying about 200 bibliographic items, of which about ten are discussed in detail as the most representative of this research speciality. The results of the study are discussed in two periods: before 1989 and after that date, as the fundamental influence of the political change and the rebirth of the free market economy in Poland after the communist period. In the modern period, three main research trends have been distinguished, referring to global research: transformational-globalisation, localisation (also called organisational-systemic) and behavioural. Moreover, urban research is discussed. In conclusion, geography of enterprise is still too weakly defined in Poland, and it is conducted from the “industry” positions of geography (especially geography of industry), which results from the institutional and organisational assumptions of the Polish socio-economic geography after the methodological conference in Osieczna in 1955.
