Particular attention is paid to the problem of a competence approach implementation in the educational process, which causes the textbook functions transformation, singling out of new functions, which correspond to the new social challenges.

This article highlights changes in the linguistic interpretation and practice of using the vocative case in Ukrainian which took place during the centuries. The study demonstrates the relation between the linguistic evaluation of this morphological form and political situation, and the status of the Ukrainian language. During theSoviet Unionperiod, linguists pointed out that the address function is peculiar to two morphological forms of a noun, i.e. the vocative and the nominative. Stylists recommended using the nominative in the official and business spheres; they considered the vocative more suitable for everyday speech. Modern Ukrainian language experts consider the vocative to be the only normative form of appeal. They suppose that using the nominative in the address form is a deviation from the norm caused by the influence of the Russian language, which prevailed in theSoviet Union. As a result of the traumatic experience of Soviet totalitarianism, issues of the literary standard of Ukrainian and its purity are acute. Thus, the linguistic evaluation, recommendations on the usage of the vocative in modern papers of Ukrainian linguists are often emotional and appeal to the speaker’s commitments. The nominative often performs the address function in the spoken language of the Ukrainians; the vocative may have a full and reduced form of both kinds. Print media orient themselves towards the literary standard and usage of the vocative. The belles lettres reflect the competition of morphological forms of the noun for the appeal expression, which is peculiar to uncontrolled speech.
Artykuł przedstawia analizę zmian w interpretacji lingwistycznej i praktyce używania wołacza, które nastąpiły w trakcie XX i XXI stulecia. Wykazano związek między oceną lingwistyczną tej formy morfologicznej a sytuacją polityczną, statusem języka ukraińskiego. W okresie radzieckim językoznawcy zwracali uwagę, że funkcja odwołania występuje w dwóch formach morfologicznych rzeczownika – w wołaczu i w mianowniku. Styliści zalecali używanie mianownika w stylu urzędowym, wołacz uznano za formę właściwą przede wszystkim dla języka mówionego. Współcześni językoznawcy ukraińscy uważają wołacz za jedyną formę normatywną odwołania, a mianownik w tej roli interpretowany jest jako odchylenie od normy spowodowane wpływem dominującego w Związku Radzieckim języka rosyjskiego. W wyniku traumatycznych doświadczeń radzieckiego totalitaryzmu kwestie standardu literackiego i czystości języka ukraińskiego są postrzegane jako bardzo drażliwe. Dlatego ocena lingwistyczna, zalecenia dotyczące użycia wołacza we współczesnych pracach ukraińskich językoznawców mają często charakter emocjonalny i odwołują się do przekonań mówiąсego. W mowie Ukraińców funkcję odwołania pełni często mianownik, a wołacz może mieć zarówno pełne, jak i skrócone formy dwojakiego rodzaju. W przypadku wydań drukowanych typowe jest koncentrowanie się na standardzie literackim, a zatem stosowanie wołacza. Konkurencja form morfologicznych rzeczownika w wyrażaniu apelatywnym, charakterystyczna dla swobodnej mowy, znajduje odzwierciedlenie w literaturze pięknej.

So far scholars investigating Russian language in America have focused on the largest East Slavic communities in the north and northeast of the country. Since the 1990s, along with the growth of Metro Atlanta, the Russian-speaking diaspora has also increased. The sociolinguistic processes taking place in this community are related to the language choice in various domains of life, and to the transmission of the minority language (as a heritage language) to the younger generation. This article presents the results of the first stage of research on the family language policy of Slavic immigrants in Georgia based on quantitative and qualitative data related to self-assessment of knowledge of English and Russian languages depending on the sphere of life and type of speech activity (reading, writing, speaking, listening), motivation for the choice of the place of residence, social characteristics, ethnic composition of the family, participation in the cultural life of the diaspora, etc.
До сих пор исследователи, занимающиеся русским языком в Америке сосредоточивали внимание на самых больших восточнославянских общинах на севере и северо-востоке страны. С 1990-х годов, вместе с ростом мегаполиса Атланта, увеличивается и русскоязычная диаспора, в которой происходят интересные социолингвистические процессы, связанные с выбором языка в конкретных сферах жизни и трансляцией языка меньшинства как унаследованного в молодое поколение. Данная статья представляет результаты первого этапа исследований семейной языковой политики славянских иммигрантов в Джорджии на материале количественных и качественных данных, относящихся к самооценке знания английского и русского языков в зависимости от сферы жизни и вида речевой деятельности (чтение, письмо, говорение, аудирование), мотивам выбора места жительства, социальным характеристикам респондентов, этническому составу семьи, участию в культурной жизни диаспоры и др.  
Do tej pory badacze języka rosyjskiego w Ameryce koncentrowali się na największych społecznościach wschodniosłowiańskich na północy i północnym wschodzie kraju. Od lat 90. wraz ze wzrostem metropolii Atlanty rozrasta się także diaspora rosyjskojęzyczna, w której zachodzą ciekawe procesy socjolingwistyczne związane z wyborem języka w określonych dziedzinach życia i przekazem języka mniejszości jako odziedziczonego młodszemu pokoleniu. W artykule przedstawiono wyniki pierwszego etapu badań nad rodzinną polityką językową słowiańskich imigrantów w Georgii na podstawie danych ilościowych i jakościowych związanych z samooceną znajomości języka angielskiego i rosyjskiego w zależności od sfery życia i typu sprawności językowej (czytanie, pisanie, mówienie, słuchanie), motywacją wyboru miejsca zamieszkania, charakterystykami społecznymi, składem etnicznym rodziny, uczestnictwem w życiu kulturalnym diaspory i in.

Opis:
Bildern kommt eine beträchtliche Rolle sowohl in der Alltagskommunikation als auch in medialen Texten zu. In diesem Beitrag stehen ausgewählte Typen von Bildern und ihre Relationen mit dem Text im Vordergrund, wobei das Korpus der Untersuchung Pressetexte aus deutschen Titeln der Regenbogenpresse bildet. Dabei wird davon ausgegangen, dass Bilder als eine Kommunikationsform in gewisser Hinsicht eindeutiger und auch bequemer sind sowie sich durch eine größere informativ-persuasive und visuelle Kraft als Wörter und Texte kennzeichnen. In der Studie wird die Regenbogenpresse auf die Präsenz und Verwendung von Bildern hin untersucht.
An extraordinary role is assigned to images not only in everyday communication, but also in media texts. The focus of this article is on selected types of images and their relationships with texts. The corpus of the study is comprised of press texts from selected glossy magazines. The starting point is an argument that images as forms of communication are in a certain sense more unambiguous and more convenient in some situations and have greater information-persuasive and visual potential than texts. Starting from this assumption, the article attempts to analyze glossy magazines in regard of presence and usage of images.

This article is dedicated to sound signalling in the history as one of the ways of non-verbal communication of a community. Due to the extensiveness of the subject matter, the author significantly narrowed down the analysis. She based her description on word formation issues rather than phraseological units, metaphorisations. She endeavoured to demonstrate that the point of view is also important in descriptions of phenomena bordering on language and culture. Her interests include word-formation nests of three instrument names: a bell, a trumpet, and a drum. The analysis concentrated on three fundamental functions of the enumerated instruments, functions displayed by word-formation devices: announcing, publicising information; summoning, gathering, calling people; excluding from the community. The material was collected from old and historical dictionaries, their corpora and files.

Artykuł poświęcono skutkom choroby COVID-19 w sferze komunikacji językowej, głosu oraz czynności prymarnych. Przedstawiono w nim wstępne wyniki badań, którymi objęto 143 pacjentów po przebytej infekcji wirusem SARS-CoV-2. Badania przeprowadzono z zastosowaniem ankiety, która miała charakter anonimowy. Celem badań było poznanie skali i rodzaju problemów związanych z komunikowaniem się językowym, głosem oraz czynnościami prymarnymi, zgłaszanymi przez chorych po przebytej infekcji.
The article has been devoted to the effects of COVID-19 disease in the sphere of language communication, voice and primary functions. It presents the preliminary results of studies involving 143 patients, following SARS-CoV-2 virus infection. The research was conducted using a survey, which was anonymous. The aim of the study was to find out the scale and type of problems related to language communication, voice and speech-primary activities reported by patients after infection

Zamieszanie terminologiczne, chęć podjęcia terapii w momencie nazwania trudności i utrudniony dostęp do terapii neurobiologicznej nie są czynnikami sprzyjającymi wyrównaniu deficytów komunikacyjnych, językowych i poznawczych w przypadku dzieci z afazją dziecięcą. Autorki przedstawiają wyniki swoich badań i opisują trudności dzieci uczestniczących w terapii neurobiologicznej. Prezentują także wyniki badań dzieci bez diagnozy zaburzeń komunikacji językowej, aby zwrócić uwagę na zadania językowe, które przysparzają najwięcej trudności. Znalazły się wśród nich ćwiczenia sekwencji słuchowych. Stanowi to dla badaczek punkt wyjścia do istotnych konkluzji terapeutycznych.
Terminological confusion, readiness for therapy at the time of naming difficulties and difficult access to neurobiological therapy are not conducive factors for compensating communication, language and cognitive deficits in children with infantile aphasia. The authors present the results of their research and describe the difficulties of children participating in neurobiological therapy. They also present the results of studies with children without a diagnosis of a speech communication disorder to draw attention to the language tasks that cause the most difficulties. These included listening sequence exercises. This is the starting point for researchers to draw important therapeutic conclusions.

The concept of the language as an instrument for children, that leads to their mutual understanding in the classes 1–3, depends on the comprehensive educators approach to the relations between linguistics and the philosophy of language, developmental psychology, sociology of culture, and the history of the Polish society. The child’s undertaking of the school education imposes on the teacher the obligation to accompany it not only in mastering the elementary knowledge of the native language’s grammar system, but also in creating situations that overcome students fear of making difficult decisions when solving interesting tasks. When using the functions of the language: fatic, communicative, informational, expressive or meta-linguistic, pupils go through the several stages from the incorrect speech to correct speech, and they master the elementary structure of the reading texts intended for the little recipients. The described process would be strengthened depending on the pupil’s social background, and conditioned culturally and environmentally. This in turn affects the perception of the poetic language function and aesthetic attitude towards art.

The subjunctive mood (subjuntivo) is an integral part of Spanish. It is also a pivotal element of Hungarian. The acquisition of its use is a big challenge, both for learners of Spanish and Hungarian. In comparison to Spanish, however, the status of the subjunctive in Hungarian is a highly debated issue and, consequently, the intricacies of its semantics may be underappreciated and result in being neglected in many reference grammar books. In the study, we propose a typology of semantic functions of the subjunctive that takes into consideration the perspective of both language systems and which can be useful for the purposes of learning and teaching Hungarian as a foreign language.

This article is a voice in discussion related to the role of mass media in educating and upbringing children in pre-school age. Human being in current times is best described as homo mediorum, who more or less depends from digital media. Those behaviours and other media related addictions are being transmitted to children nearly from the very first day of their lives. What are the consequences of that? Unfortunately, most of the consequence are negative. Research shows there are difficulties with language acquisition, selective attention, correct development of cognitive functions and it may even lower the intelligence level. Summarising it is clear that electronic media do not support education. What about upbringing? Mass media generate difficulties in interpersonal relations, lead to aggression, lack of empathy and addictions. Conclusion? It is impossible to withdraw mass media from children lives but let us try to decrease their influence in the lives of the youngest children.

Opis:
Capitalizing on the universal linguistic feature of ambiguity, punning utterances can be found in languages as distinct as the Indo-European, marginally inflected English and the Sino-Tibetan, monosyllabic, inflectionless Chinese. Though forming a tiny fraction of the utterances produced in these languages, they tend to stand out and can be encountered in diverse communicative settings, including poetry and prose, jokes and comedy routines, advertising slogans and book titles. Whether perceived as “the lowest form of wit” or a lofty rhetorical device, they perform a wide range of functions which are often grounded in distinct cultural and historical backgrounds they are embedded in. The objective of this article is to identify the most striking differences in the functions served by typical English and Chinese puns and to investigate the cultural factors underlying these differences. Adopting Jakobson’s model of language functions as the organizing principle for the discussion, I examine a range of puns in the two languages, comparing and contrasting the motivations for their use.

In dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, memory and language impairments coexist, occur early and aggravate with time. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of our proprietary language function stimulating programme on cognitive functions and the maintenance of language skills in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer-type dementia as well as to evaluate the programme’s effectiveness depending on patients’ age, sex, education, severity of dementia and level of motivation. The intervention group (54 patients) and the control group (34 patients) were divided into subgroups according to the severity of dementia (mild/moderate). Tests such as the Mini-Mental State Examination, the Clock-Drawing Test, the Boston Naming Test and picture description were performed at 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 months. In the course of 1 year, the Mini-Mental State Examination scores in the intervention group improved on average by 0.87 points, whilst in the control group they declined by 1.32 points over the same period of time. Statistically significant differences in the Clock-Drawing Test were found at 6 and 12 months, with the mean score differing by 0.98 and 1.35 points respectively across the groups. The score difference in the Boston Naming Test grew gradually. At 3 months it was 3.67 points, amounting to as much as 7.96 points at 12 months. For the picture description task, the mean scores at 12 months increased by 1.18 points in the intervention group in the mild dementia subgroup and by 0.66 points in the moderate dementia subgroup. In the control group, the scores decreased. The use of our proprietary training programme, specially designed to stimulate language functions in patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer-type dementia, facilitates the maintenance of general cognitive function and improvement of language skills, and its effectiveness increases with the patient’s motivation. This confirms the importance of supplementing non-pharmacological interventions used in Alzheimer-type dementia with language therapy programmes.
W otępieniu alzheimerowskim zaburzenia pamięci i języka współwystępują ze sobą, pojawiają się wcześnie i narastają w czasie. Celem badań była ocena wpływu autorskiego programu stymulującego funkcje językowe na funkcje poznawcze i utrzymanie sprawności językowych u osób z łagodnym i umiarkowanym otępieniem alzheimerowskim, a także ocena skuteczności programu w zależności od wieku, płci, wykształcenia, stopnia zaawansowania otępienia i poziomu motywacji. Grupę badaną (54 osoby) i kontrolną (34 osoby) podzielono na podgrupy według stopnia otępienia (łagodne/umiarkowane). Testy – Krótka Skala Oceny Stanu Psychicznego, Test Rysowania Zegara, Bostoński Test Nazywania i opis ilustracji – przeprowadzono w 1., 3., 6., 9. i 12. miesiącu. W ciągu roku wynik w Krótkiej Skali Oceny Stanu Psychicznego w grupie badanej poprawił się średnio o 0,87, a w kontrolnej obniżył średnio o 1,32 punktu. Statystycznie istotne różnice w Teście Rysowania Zegara wystąpiły w 6. i 12. miesiącu – wynik między grupami różnił się odpowiednio o 0,98 i 1,35 punktu. Różnica w Bostońskim Teście Nazywania stopniowo się powiększała: w 3. miesiącu wynosiła 3,67, a w 12. miesiącu – już 7,96 punktu. W opisie ilustracji w 12. miesiącu średnie wyniki wzrosły w grupie badanej o 1,18 punktu w łagodnym i o 0,66 punktu w umiarkowanym otępieniu. W grupie kontrolnej stwierdzono obniżenie wyników. Stosowanie autorskiego programu stymulującego funkcje językowe u osób z łagodnym i umiarkowanym otępieniem alzheimerowskim przyczynia się do utrzymania ogólnych sprawności poznawczych i do poprawy sprawności językowych, co jest tym efektywniejsze, im wyższy jest poziom motywacji pacjentów. Potwierdza to znaczenie uzupełniania terapii pozafarmakologicznych stosowanych w otępieniu alzheimerowskim o językowe programy terapeutyczne.

Opis:
Głównym celem tego artykułu jest wskazanie znaczenia podejścia komunikacyjnego CLT w nauczaniu konwersacji w języku angielskim. Pierwszą kwestią przedstawioną w tym artykule jest wyjaśnienie pojęcia konwersacji oraz ukazanie jej kwintesencji. Następnie zaprezentowano główne założenia przypisane podejściu komunikacyjnemu CLT, funkcje językowe i cztery kategorie kompetencji komunikacyjnej. Kolejny punkt stanowi opis ról przypisanych uczniom i nauczycielom w obrębie podejścia komunikacyjnego CLT oraz krótka wzmianka o trzech rodzajach materiałów, które zwiększają zdolności komunikacyjne. Ponadto, zaprezentowano i opisano zasady stosowane w projektowaniu technik, w tym listę mikro umiejętności. W dalszej części artykułu zaproponowane zostały różne kategorie i rodzaje aktywności werbalnej. Ostatnia część artykułu zawiera przykłady ćwiczeń.
