Let V, W be algebraic subsets of $k^n$, $k^m$ respectively, with n ≤ m. It is known that any finite polynomial mapping f: V → W can be extended to a finite polynomial mapping $F: k^{n} → k^{m}.$ The main goal of this paper is to estimate from above the geometric degree of a finite extension $F: k^n → k^n$ of a dominating mapping f: V → W, where V and W are smooth algebraic sets.

For some variants of the finite element method there exist points having a remainder value or a derivation remainder remarkably less than those given by global norms. This phenomenon is called superconvergence and the points are called superconvergence points. The generalized problem corresponding to (1) is as follows: Let Hk(Ω) be Sobolev space and Hk0(Ω) the completion of the space C∞0(Ω) with norm ∥⋅∥k,Ω. Find u∈H10(Ω) such that for each v∈H10(Ω), (2) a(u,v)=(f,v)0 holds, where a(u,v)=∫Ω(∑n|α|=0aα(x)DαuDαv)dx, (f,v)0=∫Ωf(x)v(x)dx, Dα=Dα11⋯Dαnn,1.5pt Dαiiu=∂αiu/∂xαii, i=1,n¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯. The approximate problem of the finite element variant considered is the following: Find uh∈Vh such that (3) for all v∈Vh, a(uh,v)=(f,v)0. The main result is the theorem: Let ai∈C(Ω¯), D1ai,D2ai∈L∞(Ω),i=1,2,∥σ∥∞L(Ω)≤σ,f∈L2(Ω). Suppose the eigenvalues of the operator L are different from zero, and u∈H4(Ω)∩H10(Ω). Then there exists h0 such that for h≤h0, h2∑P∈G|grad(u−uh)(P)|≤Ch3(|u|3+|u|4), where u and uh are the solutions of problems (2) and (3), respectively, and C is some constant independent of h. Further, |u|k={∫Ω(∑|α|=k(Dαu)2)dx}1/2, G=⋃N1N2i=1Fi(R), R={(±3√/3,±3√/3)} is a Gauss point set in the quadrant S={(ξ1,ξ2):|ξk|≤1,k=1,2}, and Fi(F(1)i,F(2)i):S→ei, ei an element; F(1)i(ξ1,ξ2)=x(i)0+h1ξ1/2, F(2)i(ξ1,ξ2)=y(i)0+h2ξ2/2, and (x(i)0,y(i)0) is the middle element.

Let X and Y be compacta and let f:X → Y be a k-dimensional map. In [5] Pasynkov stated that if Y is finite-dimensional then there exists a map $g : X → \mathbb{I}^k$ such that dim (f × g) = 0. The problem that we deal with in this note is whether or not the restriction on the dimension of Y in the Pasynkov theorem can be omitted. This problem is still open.
 Without assuming that Y is finite-dimensional Sternfeld [6] proved that there exists a map $g : X → \mathbb{I}^k$ such that dim (f × g) = 1. We improve this result of Sternfeld showing that there exists a map $g : X → mathbb{I}^{k+1}$ such that dim (f × g) =0. The last result is generalized to maps f with weakly infinite-dimensional fibers.
Our proofs are based on so-called Bing maps. A compactum is said to be a Bing compactum if its compact connected subsets are all hereditarily indecomposable, and a map is said to be a Bing map if all its fibers are Bing compacta. Bing maps on finite-dimensional compacta were constructed by Brown [2]. We construct Bing maps for arbitrary compacta. Namely, we prove that for a compactum X the set of all Bing maps from X to $\mathbb{I}$ is a dense $G_δ$-subset of $C(X, \mathbb{I})$.

This paper presents applications of the adaptive FEM in computational biomechanics. The study involves finite deformation of artery walls built of layers of elastic, nearly incompressible (rubber-like) materials. The models are reinforced with nearly inextensible collagen fibres stretched along the directions close to the circumferential direction. A Total Lagrangian technique based on the displacement-pressure formulation is presented. Residual error estimates and finite element mesh adaptation strategies are developed. The procedures are illustrated for solutions of arteries under various load considerations.

The main goal of this paper is to present coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics and structural analysis for the precise determination of wind impact on internal forces and deformations of structural elements of a longspan roof structure. The Finite Volume Method (FVM) serves for a solution of the fluid flow problem to model the air flow around the structure, whose results are applied in turn as the boundary tractions in the Finite Element Method problem structural solution for the linear elastostatics with small deformations. The first part is carried out with the use of ANSYS 15.0 computer system, whereas the FEM system Robot supports stress analysis in particular roof members. A comparison of the wind pressure distribution throughout the roof surface shows some differences with respect to that available in the engineering designing codes like Eurocode, which deserves separate further numerical studies. Coupling of these two separate numerical techniques appears to be promising in view of future computational models of stochastic nature in large scale structural systems due to the stochastic perturbation method.

Simulation of movement of a large number of charged particles in external electrostatic field is of great importance for a correct design of separators whose aim is to select them according to the sign of their charge. The paper deals with modeling of their trajectories in a specific arrangement consisting of a profile vessel equipped with two electrodes and several collecting bins. Electric field between the electrodes is determined using a fully adaptive higher-order finite element method. The movement (velocities and trajectories) of the particles affected by electric field, gravity and aerodynamic resistance is modeled by an adaptive Runge-Kutta-Fehlberg method with an appropriately varying time step. On the other hand, their charges are rather low, so that it is possible to neglect the Coulomb forces acting among them. The methodology is illustrated by a typical example whose results are discussed.

Two single-item, deterministic, continuous, finite horizon inventory models having no shortage have been considered. A demand rate function, which is relatively general, for the item has been assumed. In the first model, units of the item do not deteriorate; while in the second units deteriorate in a constant fraction rate. Some optimality conditions are shown for the models. Based on these properties, single variable search methods have been described to obtain globally optimal solutions. Numerical experiments indicate that the methods yield acceptable solutions within small time and are suitable for practical applications.

A model of the knee implant (produces by ProSpon, s.r.o. [4]) consists of following parts: femoral stem, femoral replacement, femoral component, PE bushings, and tibial plateau. Results for four positions of flexion (1.53deg, 8.13deg, 15.31deg and 26.33deg) gave better understanding of strain and stress distribution along the endopros-thesis and pointed out also the most crucial areas requiring the attention. These foundlings are useful for individual design of the knee-joint prosthesis and for further development.

This paper presents a first attempt to model abrasive waterjet (AWJM) machining process using the powerful tool of the finite element method (FEM) in order to explain the abrasive particle-workpiece interaction. The new model takes into account precise representation of the constitutive behaviour of the workpiece material under AWJ dynamic loading conditions which was ignored in previous AWJM models. In the present model, forces acting on the abrasive particle need not be initially determined, as in previous AWJM studies, as they are automatically calculated at each time step. The results show that the finite element method is a useful tool in predicting abrasive-material interaction and AWJ depth of cut.
Modelowanie obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych. W artykule przedstawiono pierwsze podejście do modelowania obróbki strumieniem wodnościernym metodą elementów skończonych.

It is very characteristic, that the values of the derivatives at each point depend on the function values at all points in that area. Such operators allow one to easily create finite-difference equations for boundaryvalue problems. The operators are addressed especially to nonlinear differential equations.

The lecture deals with explicit and implicit finite difference and mainly finite volume schemes that have been commonly used in last years for compressible and incompressible fluid flow problems. Mainly we mention schemes used for transonic flow computation (inviscid as well as viscous models) in internal and also external aerodynamics. We prefer modern schemes like RK multistage schemes, TVD and ENO schemes, implicit schemes or higher order schemes. Some results of numerical computation or numerical simulation are presented in the second part of the paper, including 2D and 3D transonic flow through a channel and a cascade (mainly of turbine type), 2D and 3D backward facing step flow (laminar and turbulent), 2D and 3D impinging jet flow (comparisons of some turbulent models). The last two cases have been computed only for incompressible viscous flows. Some tests for the efficiency of higher order scheme (4th-6th order) are presented for the backward facing step problem. In many examples we also present a comparison of numerical and experimental results.

In this paper we consider the Newton-like methods for the solution of nonlinear equations. In each step of the Newton method the linear equations are solved approximatively by a projection method. We call this a projective-Newton method. We investigate the convergence and the order of convergence for these methods. Next, the projective-Newton methods in the finite element space are applied for nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems. In this case the linear equations of the Newton method are solved by the Ritz method.

For the solution of equation (1) the author proposes a variational-difference method. Namely, he approximates equation (1) by Galerkin's method with respect to the variables x1,x2 and by the finite-difference method with respect to the variable t. Under some assumptions concerning the coefficients ai, i=0,1,2, an estimate of the error is given.

Opis:
This paper presents a procedure of conducting Stochastic Finite Element Analysis using Polynomial Chaos. It eliminates the need for a large number of Monte Carlo simulations thus reducing computational time and making stochastic analysis of practical problems feasible. This is achieved by polynomial chaos expansion of the displacement field. An example of a plane-strain strip load on a semi-infinite elastic foundation is presented and results of settlement are compared to those obtained from Random Finite Element Analysis. A close matching of the two is observed.
