    The paper wishes to document a recent trend visible in the Hungarian independent theatre scene – a turn towards social, political issues, as well as a growing sensitivity towards the visible tensions in Hungarian political discourse. It does so through the analysis and the contextualization of two recent Hungarian independent theatrical productions. Studio K’s 2019 Sacra Hungarica is an in-your-face attempt to portray the current distortion of the language and the abuse language is used for, while Béla Pintér’s Blood Red, Off-White, Dark Green, a clever Oedipus Rex paraphrase that depicts marginalization, racism, and nationalism in a pointedly non-pc allegory. The essay introduces the status of independent theatre vis-à-vis politics after 1989 and will delineate the changes the conservative governments brought into the alternative scene. Then, through an in-depth analysis of the above-mentioned two productions, it discusses the various means of theatricality they use to comment on contemporary Hungary.

    Postwar film writings of Tadeusz Peiper are the protest against “the policics of the voice” (M. Dolar) of the Polish social realist and propaganda films. Escaping from be-ing involved in communist ideology, the author creates a cinematic theory concentrated on nonverbal elements. An important role is played by categories extremely far from the constructivist discourse of art (nostalgia, community, non-human).

    Probably no other Polish filmmaker has devoted as much attention to the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) as Krzysztof Kieślowski did in his films. Early on, he perceived the party as an organization where one could meet people with different desires, motivations and modus operandi. Kieślowski’s perspective could be defined as such: do not judge the whole, focus on individuals. His subsequent films present a change in this perspective. Workers and devoted members of the communist party were in the center of the director’s interest in some of his early films. Later, he focused more and more on individuals, especially those who had to face the party as a structure and hierarchy. Kieślowski’s films made in the early 1980s show party leaders and people in charge who eventually turn out to be losers. Kieślowski perceived various aspects and forms of being a party member, not only as a stepping stone for one’s career. He saw and presented the everyday life of PZPR, relations between the authorities and society, and its members and representatives of the party apparatus. He was quite critical about the party and people in charge, but also tried to see and present the reasons motivating their conduct. Social and political changes in Poland in the early 1980s made this kind of approach increasingly difficult for Kieślowski.

    The vast majority of documentary films relevant to the events of March ‘68 and its consequences were created after 1989, when the abolition of censorship and the opening of previously hidden archives allowed Polish filmmakers to explore previously prohibited topics. The article focuses on the earlier period, and its main objective is to find echos of this political crisis in documentary films created before the collapse of the communist regime in Poland.

    Autorka analizuje pochodzący z 1979 r. film Patriotka (Die Patriotin), zrealizowany przez niemieckiego reżysera Alexandra Klugego, jednego z sygnatariuszy manifestu z Oberhausen, bodaj najsłynniejszego przedstawiciela tamtego pokolenia. Stworzony częściowo w oparciu o metodę found footage utwór, będący kompilacją formy fabularnej i dokumentalnej, oferuje wgląd w eseistyczną strategię autorską Klugego, zaś w szerszym znaczeniu stanowi przykład odbywających się na gruncie Nowego Kina Niemieckiego poszukiwań form wyrazu zdolnych przerodzić się w wehikuł trudno komunikowalnych treści historycznych, szczególnie w odniesieniu do mrocznej, pełnej imperialnych gestów historii Niemiec. Autorka przyjmuje, że narracja Patriotki jest rozpięta między trzema kontekstami – historią, polityką i liryzmem, stanowiącymi nie tylko punkty odniesienia w procesie interpretacji, ale również przenikające się elementy sensotwórcze.
    The author analyses the film Patriot (Die Patriotin, 1979), made by the German director Alexander Kluge, one of the signatories of the manifesto from Oberhausen, probably the most famous representative of that generation. Created partly on the basis of the found footage method, the work, which is a compilation of the narrative and documentary form, offers an insight into Kluge’s essayistic strategy, and in a broader sense it is an example of the exploration of forms of expression that can turn into a vehicle of hard-to-communicate historical content on the grounds of the New German Cinema, especially with regard to the dark German history, full of imperial gestures. The author assumes that the narrative of Patriot is spread between three contexts – history, politics and lyricism, which are not only reference points in the process of interpretation, but also interpenetrating elements generating meaning.

    Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie: jaki był i jest filmowy obraz problemu niechcianej ciąży i aborcji w Polsce. Mowa tu o swoistym dyskursie filmowym. Dla autorki kino jest odbiciem rzeczywistości, czasem w krzywym lustrze, jest produkcją kultury, ale i elementem wpływającym na ową dziedzinę. Z tej perspektywy interesującą kwestią jest to, w jaki sposób kino ukazuje problem aborcji oraz jakie mity wokół tego zagadnienia tworzy i utrwala, a jakie dekonstruuje. Szkic pisany jest z perspektywy socjologicznej, w tym socjologii filmu. Rzeczywiste związki dzieła ze światem wydają się być dla socjologa niemniej interesujące niż badania sytuacji komunikacji między artystą a odbiorcą. Prezentacja problemu niechcianej ciąży i aborcji w kinie polskim oraz w dyskursu na ten temat pozwala śledzić korespondencję sztuki (kino) i rzeczywistości społecznej. Autorka stosuje perspektywę diachroniczną by w efekcie wskazać wzajemne zależności polityki, ideologii oraz rzeczywistości w filmach podejmujących analizowane kwestie.

    Prezentowany w 2004 r. w CSW Zamek Ujazdowski projekt Entuzjaści Marysi Lewandowskiej i Neila Cummingsa przypomina współczesnemu odbiorcy o ruchu Amatorskich Klubów Filmowych – zjawisku o masowym charakterze, które rozwijało się w Polsce Ludowej od początku lat 50. do końca lat 80., a po transformacji ustrojowej zostało zepchnięte na margines historii rodzimego kina. Choć powodem tego były między innymi relacje łączące amatorów z reżimem komunistycznym, to jednak przyglądając się zjawisku obecnie, można dojść do wniosku, że działający w klubach filmowcy pozostawali często poza oficjalną sferą kultury, przyjmując kontrkulturową taktykę oporu i krytyki. Entuzjaści odsłaniają ponadto arbitralność historii polskiego kina, która opiera się na kanonie wykluczającym takie zjawiska, które do niego nie pasują, jak na przykład twórczość członków AKF-ów.
    Marysia Lewandowska and Neil Cummings’ project The Enthusiasts presented in 2004 at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle reminds the contemporary member of the audi- ence about the Amateur Film Club movement, a mass phenomenon which took place in Polish People’s Republic between 1950s and late 1980s, and which, following the political transformation, was pushed into the margins of the history of Polish cinema. Although the reason for this was, among other things, the relations linking the amateurs with the communist regime, looking at it now, one may conclude that filmmakers participating in the clubs often remained outside of the official sphere of culture, adopting guerrilla tactics of resistance and criticism. The Enthusiasts project also reveals the arbitrary nature of the history of Polish cinema, which is based on a canon that excludes phenomena that do not fit in, such as for example the work of the members of the Amateur Film Clubs.
