Opis:
The paper deals with the measurement preparation for the exhaust gases measurement. The measurement is carried out within the project of basic research. The aim of the project is the research of the influence of an unconventional charging intercooling on the selected ecological and economical parameters of a turbocharged compression ignition internal combustion engine in the specific operational conditions. The paper gives the information about the types, numbers, specification and position of the sensors used. The measuring scheme with the connection of sensors and connector blocks is also shown. The details about the single parts of the measuring chain are given. The paper also shows the view on the sensors through the photographs. Some results from a testing measurement are also shown and the results from the selected sensors can be compared. The two different intercoolers are used for charging air cooling. The first intercooler is the air/air type equipped with a ventilator, the second intercooler is the water/air type without a ventilator. The total displacement of an engine is 7.61. The measurement itself is aimed mainly to acquire information regarding the influence of the low temperatures of charging on the amount of NOx. Also the influence on the amount of particulate matter is examined through the mentioned measurement.

Opis:
The exhaust gases from marine diesel engines contain high SO2 and NOx concentration. The applicability of the electron beam flue gas treatment technology for purification of marine diesel exhaust gases containing high SO2 and NOx concentration gases was the main goal of this paper. The study was performed in the laboratory plant with NOx concentration up to 1700 ppmv and SO2 concentration up to 1000 ppmv. Such high NOx and SO2 concentrations were observed in the exhaust gases from marine high-power diesel engines fuelled with different heavy fuel oils. In the first part of study the simulated exhaust gases were irradiated by the electron beam from accelerator. The simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx were obtained and their removal efficiencies strongly depend on irradiation dose and inlet NOx concentration. For NOx concentrations above 800 ppmv low removal efficiencies were obtained even if applied high doses. In the second part of study the irradiated gases were directed to the seawater scrubber for further purification. The scrubbing process enhances removal efficiencies of both pollutants. The SO2 removal efficiencies above 98.5% were obtained with irradiation dose greater than 5.3 kGy. For inlet NOx concentrations of 1700 ppmv the NOx removal efficiency about 51% was obtained with dose greater than 8.8 kGy. Methods for further increase of NOx removal efficiency are presented in the paper.

Regulations concerning the limitation of harmful compounds emission contained in exhaust gases become more restrictive. This is observed within regulations regarding land-based installations and also rules applied to ships of global trade fleet. Other restrictions of vessels emissions, enclosed in rules set out in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78 are gradually implemented and establish emission limits for ship engines. The boiler delivers the heat energy required for fuel preparation for main and auxiliary engines - and also by consuming fuel in its combustion chamber becomes and emitter. This article describes the anticipated methodology of the boiler steam efficiency, depending on the main engine installed. Additionally, fuel oil consumption analysis in various steam capacity range performed using the histograms. The histograms were produced on the basis of service reports of similar units, and combining fuel oil consumption with exhaust emission during operation. A vessel engine report includes monthly machinery abstract and is compiled for a ship-owner on the basis of the log book records. Quantified exhaust emission from auxiliary oil fired boiler contributes determination the overall emissions from a ship.

Opis:
The article describes the problem of measuring the temperature in a pulse combustion chamber. The object of the study is a valveless pulsejet. The problem is analysed on the example of exhaust gases temperature measurement. The measurement in these conditions requires the use of a sensor resistant to large changes in gas velocity and temperature and at the same time with adequatly low inertia. This excludes the use of fast and precise yet thin, resistant wire sensors or ultrafast thin film thermocouples. Finally, a temperature measurement system based on sheated thermocouples was chosen. During each test the thermocouple has its own temperature which is different from the medium temperature. In order to properly determine the measured temperature of flowing media it is necessary to take the sensor time characteristics into account. In this article the iteration method is proposed to solve this problem.

Helicopters, in comparison to other aircrafts, have much lower flight speeds and manoeuvrability, which makes them easy targets for actual combat assets like ground to air or air-to-air infrared-guided missiles. Current techniques aim to increase the combat effectiveness and lifetime of military helicopters performing combat missions by reducing the possibility of their detection on battlefield, thereby increasing their flight time without fire attack and reduce effects of potential strike. When designing new helicopter types, especially for combat applications, it is essential to pay enormous attention to infrared emissions of the solid parts composing the helicopter’s structure, as well as to exhaust gases egressing from the engine’s exhaust system. Due to their high temperature, exhaust gases, egressed to the surrounding are a major factor in infrared radiation emission level and, in consequence, detectability of a helicopter performing air combat operations. This article presents the possibility to decrease the infrared radiation level that is emitted to the environment by helicopter in flight, by cooling hot exhaust in special ejective cooler. Article presents also the exhaust cooler operation principles and results of numeric analysis of concept exhaust cooler adapted to cooperate with PA-10W turbine engine. Numeric analysis presented promising results in decreasing the infrared emission level by PA W-3 helicopter in flight, as well as increasing its stealth properties.

The aim of the present study was a numerical investigation of the efficiency of the combustion process of a novel concept burner under different operating conditions. The design of the burner was a part of the development process of a complete SOFC based system and a challenging combination of technical requirements to be fulfilled. A Computational Fluid Dynamics model of a non-premixed burner was used to simulate combustion of exhaust gases from the anode region of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell stacks. The species concentrations of the exhaust gases were compared with experimental data and a satisfactory agreement of the conversion of hydrocarbons was obtained. This validates the numerical methodology and also proves applicability of the developed approach that quantitatively characterized the interaction between the exhaust gases and burner geometry for proper combustion modelling. Thus, the proposed CFD approach can be safely used for further numerical optimisation of the burner design.

Opis:
The number of vehicles in the world is growing rapidly. Therefore, the global consumption of crude oil is increasing and its natural resources are being depleted. It causes the rise of oil fuel cost. Constantly rising energy prices and emironmental concerns have made energy saving the highest priority for transportation operators. The main goal of vehicles' operation is economy. The fuel consumption of the most popular internal combustion engines depends on various factors, and one of the most important of them is thermal condition. Energy or fuel saving is the main way to reduce operational expenses of vehicles. This paper aims to investigate fuel consumption of 1.9 liter volume direct injection diesel engine and to construct a diagram of the dependence of the amount of smoke in exhaust on the temperature of engine's operation. The temperature was fixed in the engine's crankcase, while the temperature of cooling liquid was measured at four points as well as during the engine's bench testing. Unexpected test results are obtained: when the temperature of exhaust gases rises above 70-75 °C, the amount of smoke increases by a few times. Finally, basic conclusions and recommendations are given.

The fuel injection phenomena belongs to the most essential processes, which are object of many experimental and theoretical works, indispensable for development of contemporary internal-combustion engines, both the spark and compression ignition. The direct injection of fotel to the engine combustion chamber belongs to most advanced solutions and must realize at least two or even more different strategies of engine performance. Article presents the various research methods of the fuel atomization processes, being concentrated on laser methods, from which deserves on the emphasis the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system, the Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) system and Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer (PDPA) system. Article presents theoretical analysis relating the atomized fuel stream. The results of research based on the laser research equipment are also submitted in the article. Moreover presented are the results ofresearch of the combustion process in the fixed volume chamber, where essentially two different strategies of the combustion process of homogenous and heterogeneous load were realized. The properly shaped fuel stream permits on obtainment of repeatable ignition and combustion in the wide range of the mixture variance. The essential meaning has the fuel stream disintegration, which influences advantageously on the level of the toxic exhaust elements emission, particularly on the hydrocarbon emission level because of the ignition dropout elimination and on the level of the nitrogen oxides emission because of short sojourn time of the fuel droplets in the combustion zone.

Paper describes the application of the dual zone model, allowing the analysis of the combustion process in an SI engine with the possibility of estimating 10 different exhaust gases i.e.: CO2, CO, H2O O2, NO, N2, H2, H, O and OH. The research has been carried on a 1.6 litr es four cylinder SI engine, fed with petrol and alternatively with LPG and CNG. In-cylinder pressure for the 4th cylinder of the tested engine has been acąuired for several engine speeds. registered in-cylinder pressure traces p=p((fi), together with the volume variation nii=nii((fi) infunction ofcrank angle, were used in the combustion process simulating calculations. Obtained results made it possible to compare selected parameters describing the combustion process. Obtained results do also prove recognized fact related to the higher temperature necessary to initiate gaseous fuel combustion.

Each material's mineralogical, chemical and textural characteristics were explored. In order to conduct experiments in conditions similar to those during the contact of sorbent with real coal exhaust fumes at a temperature of about 110-120°C, the experiments were carried out using a test device consisting of a furnace for burning powdered coals, a thermostatic cage for sorbent reactors and mercury gas analysers, which are able to measure and compare the effects of individual sorbents with exhaust gas. The study found that the best results for mercury sorption in the exhaust atmosphere were obtained for class C ash resulting from brown coal combustion.

Exhaust gases with high SO2 concentrations are emitted from combustion of high sulphur fossil fuels and from different industrial processes (e.g. copper smelter and sintering plants). The application of the electron beam process for SO2 and NOx removal from such flue gases was investigated. A parametric study was carried out to determine the SO2 and NOx removal efficiency as a function of temperature and humidity of irradiated gases, absorbed dose and ammonia stoichiometry. The efficiency 90–95% of SO2 removal was obtained in the optimal treatment conditions with an inlet SO2 concentration of up to 15% vol. The synergistic effect of high SO2 content on NOx removal was indicated. The collected by-product was a mixture of ammonium sulphate and nitrate. The content of heavy metals in the by- -products was many times lower than the values accepted for commercial fertilizers.

The paper deals with problems of model analysis of the process of exhaust gases components formation in internal combustion engine working with combustion initiation from ignition dose of fuel injected directly into the working space. In result of scientific-research works carried out in the Chair of Internal Combustion Engines of Cracow University of Technology on the basis of a four stroke engine a driving unit was elaborated which may work both with spark ignition and combustion initiation from a ignition dose of fuel. Application of two combustion systems in engine aimed at combining the advantages of spark ignition with compression ignition driving units. Such an engine is characterized by fuel consumption comparable with that gained by compression ignition engines, whereas, the exhaust gases composition is similar to that occurring in up-to-date spark ignition engines. Similar assumption concern the Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition - HCCI system which seems to be a future solution of internal combustion engines, nevertheless, up till now, in spite of intensive works in many countries all over the world, one did not succeed to control the combustion process in a large range of rotational speeds and loads what would give the possibility of using it in traction application. The solution proposed in the patent application by Prof. B. Sendyka is not burdened with this drawback since the moment of occurrence of volumetric ignition of the formed mixture in the process of filling is tightly connected with the moment of fuel dose injection. In result of simulative studies carried out by use of KIVA-3V software on the discussed solution it was stated that the process of exhaust gases toxic components formation in engine working in the mode of ignition from pilot dose does not depart in generally form from that which occurs at work with spark ignition.

Purpose The effectiveness of gas purification depends on the sorption properties of sorbents. The aim of the research was to determine the ability of sodium sorbents to remove gaseous pollutants such as HCl and HF. Design/methodology/approach The research used baking soda subjected to mechanical and thermal activation, which was introduced into the hot flue gas circuit, similar to the dry flue gas cleaning method used in all kinds of boilers. Findings In almost all cases, mechanical and thermal treatment of baking soda allowed for a significant improvement in the reduction of hydrogen chloride and hydrogen fluoride concentrations in the exhaust gases produced during the combustion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. Research limitations/implications The preparation of sorbents must consider the optimum development of the material's specific surface area, especially during thermal activation, to prevent pores from sintering. Practical implications In wet and dry flue gas cleaning processes, sodium compounds are used in the power industry. Appropriate preparation of the sorbent allows for improving the effectiveness of reducing the concentration of harmful substances and reducing investment and operating costs. Originality/value From the point of view of process optimisation, the results obtained will contribute to the identification of optimal operating conditions in dry sorbent injection systems to prevent the pores on the surface of the sorbent from clogging when injected into hot flue gases.

Opis:
An important issue in construction of combustion chamber in compression-ignition engines is proper selection of its shape and size. Both features are dependent on several factors such as fuel injector location and angle, spray atomizer selection (amount of holes, their diameter and angular position), location of inlet valve and air turbulence. By doing research on prototype engine T370, an analysis of influence of combustion chamber size and its modifications going towards lip construction on flue gas toxicity was done. The diameter and depth of combustion chamber was being changed while maintaining the same compression ratio. After that, a modification of tested combustion chambers was made by creating so called “lip”, which aim was to create a swirl of injected fuel in the vertical plane. To visualize the changes in swirl, a numerical analysis of fuel injection into combustion chamber was made. In discussed study, emission tests were performed according to ECE-R49. During the research six combustion chambers with diameters 60, 63 and 66 mm (and their modification) were investigated. Tests were performed for several types of injectors and different injection timing. However, for analysis of combustion chamber size the results are presented for the same injectors but with optimized injection timing.

An analysis of the use of ejection gas-air coolers is presented as an additional method of emission reduction. However, the use of such device does not neutralise the harmful emissions of power plant engines, but only increases the volume concentration of their exhaust gases. But this will help to increase the efficiency of dispersion of harmful emissions, by reducing the concentration of harmful emissions to values not exceeding the maximum permissible concentrations. Its efficiency depends on the load mode of the diesel engine. It is found that the initial concentration of harmful substances in combustion products due to their dilution with fresh air at 100% engine load is reduced by about 50%. The values of the reduction of the concentration and temperature of exhaust gases with the reduction of the engine load to 75% and 50% depending on the louvre angle are obtained. It is proved that ejection gas-air coolers can be an effective additional means for compliance with modern environmental parameters, especially when vessels are in special areas of the world’s oceans.

Opis:
Future options for addressing the depletion of fossil fuels and reducing pollution from internal combustion engines may include biofuel as an alternative fuel. This study aims to experimentally and statistically assess the effect of using diesel-biofuel blends on the emissions of a single-cylinder direct-injection engine. Using recycled olive oil, a chemical Tran’s esterification process was used to create biofuel. The experimental results were contrasted with those of a one-dimensional engine model for exhaust emissions and torque, which showed high agreement between test and numerical data. In order to comprehend the factors that affect the engine’s reaction to variations in fuel composition, the thermodynamic characteristics of the engine for various blends were also supplied. According to the investigation, a mixture with 20% of the volume fraction of oleic acid methyl ester olive-based biofuel and 80% of the volume fraction of pure diesel can be an effective fuel alternative for cleaner exhaust emissions while offering almost the same performance.

Natural and synthetic zeolites have been the subject of worldwide scientific research for several decades. Increased attention is paid to utilization of zeolites in environmental protection. The interest in zeolites is related to their unique structure and the related chemical and physical properties which form the basis of their potential ecological, industrial and agricultural applications. The paper presents partial results of research focused on the use of natural zeolite clinoptilolite for reduction of nitrogen monoxide, the component of combustion engines exhaust gases. Experiments were carried out with natural zeolite and also its modified forms. The results obtained allowed us to state that clinoptilolite is a prospective material for application in the treatment of exhaust gasses from combustion engines.

Opis:
The development of marine diesel engines has so far been directed towards increasing their power, reducing fuel consumption, burning fuels of the lowest possible quality and the extension of operation time. The rising pro-ecological pressure has made atmosphere pollution by exhaust gases of marine engines one of the main problems of environmental protection of recent years. The Gdansk Bay area, just like sea ports or coastal regions, is vulnerable to the effect of noxious compounds contained in vessel exhaust gases, besides those coming from industrial plants, power plants or vehicles. This concerns vessels both in ports and in the roads. In order to determine the share of vessels in environmental pollution and to counteract the harmful effects of toxic compounds in marine engine exhaust gases, it is necessary to know the emission values of these compounds from particular vessels, which is possible with the knowledge of their movement parameters, concentration values of particular compounds for these parameters and the atmospheric conditions. The report presents problems of modelling the NOx emission in exhaust gases from main marine Diesel engines, such as problems with construction special models describing the marine vessels movement or define real value of toxic compounds emission.

W referacie przedstawiono wyniki badań doświadczalnych doładowanego, cztero- cylindrowego silnika o zapłonie samoczynnym o objętości skokowej 1,7 dm3 z bezpośrednim wtrys. iem paliwa. W badaniach szczególny nacisk położono na możliwość uwzględnienia sterowania dawką paliwa, kątem wyprzedzenia wtrys. u, stopniem recyrkulacji spalin oraz temperaturą i ciśnieniem ładunku w kolektorze dolotowym w celu określenia zawartości składników toksycznych i zadymienie spalin. Wyniki badań przedstawiono w postaci funkcji aproksymacyjnych wielu zmiennych.
In the paper the results of experimental investigations on a turbocharged, four-cylinder direct injection SI engine with the displacement of 1.7 dm3 are presented. In the investigations, particular attention was paid to the possibility of including the control of fuel dose, injection advance angle, exhaust gas recirculation rate and the temperature and pressure of air charge in the inlet manifold with the intent to determine the content of the toxic components and the smokiness of exhaust gases. The results of the investigations are presented in the form of approximation functions of several variables. The variables are the engine control parameters mentioned above. An analysis of the investigation results is presented and a possible application of the approximation functions in the optimisation of engine control parameters is indicated with the aim of selecting such values of control parameters as would guarantee a reduction of the nitrogen oxides content in the exhaust gases while maintaining the content of other toxic components and the assumed engine exploitation parameters on an acceptable level.

Costs for tolling a motorway in Poland should take into account not only profits of owners and managers, but also difficulties and losses incurred by road users. Lack of smoothness of travel as well as high tolls do not have a positive impact on the country's economic development. The nervousness and stress of drivers and passengers trapped in cars standing in traffic jams in front of the gates on motorways - they indicate an important social problem. The costs of fuel burnt during forced stops, costs of harmful effects on the environment, pollution from car exhaust emissions while waiting on the highway in front of the gates – they all are a significant burden. Failure to ensure the conditions for a smooth ride causing the need to wait on the highway in front of the gates is an example of disregarding people, wastage and deliberate harm to the environment for disproportionate profits charges for using the highways.
