Opis:
Based on the results of detailed geological-geomorphological studies, old maps from the past 200 years, and historical data, the paper is the first to present the structure of the valley floor in the estuary of the Nida River, an upland tributary of the Vistula, and discuss changes in the development and course of their channels. The aim of the study was to grasp the importance of local factors, both natural (palaeogeographical, lithological and tectonic) and anthropogenic, in the morphogenesis of this section, where a relatively small upland stream crossed in the medieval and modern periods by important overland and water routes of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth flows into the Vistula River, which is ten times larger. The discussed section is not deltaic in character. The branching of the Nida into several simultaneously functioning outlet arms may have been caused by the blocking of outflow from the valley during floods and the drainage of the flood waters at the valley mouth in several directions, via channels both permanent and periodic. Changes in the numbers and locations of the Nida estuaries in recent centuries have both natural and anthropogenic causes. The interaction between the main stream and its many-times smaller tributary in the studied section has resulted in a complex mosaic of forms and cut-and-fills of both streams, but with the Vistula playing the dominant role. The cut-and-fills of the Vistula “enclose” the Nida alluvium inside its valley on the Winiary-Nowy Korczyn line, while the cut-and-fills of the Nida only occur in a very narrow strip under the edge of the terrace. The Nida followed abandoned channels of the Vistula on Holocene cut-and-fill IIA, flowing parallel to the Vistula for 9 km. The floor of the Nida Valley lacks Holocene mineral-organic and mineral sediments, characteristic of other upland tributaries from loess areas. The regulation of the Vistula in the mid-19th century and the Nida in the first half of the 20th century fixed the courses of the rivers, completely changing the sedimentation regime in the estuarine section of the Nida, where backflow and associated sedimentation of fine-grained deposits occurred.

Opis:
Merapi Volcano in Central Java, Indonesia, has a high eruption intensity that triggers landscape changes in the form of a river channel evolution. In this paper, the spatial change of river valleys under the influence of sediments deposition in the fluvio-volcanic system is investigated. The data were collected by employing observation, remote sensing image interpretation, literature study and documentation of data from several agencies. The data were analysed using the spatial approach supported by geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing. The results show that there are many palaeochannels related to fluvio-volcanic processes from the southern to the western sectors of the Merapi volcanic foot. Palaeochannels are mainly distributed next to the main river valleys. This condition correlates with the contributions of the Merapi eruptions. The palaeochannel distribution patterns cluster radially following the distribution pattern of the river valleys. The process that plays the most important role in the evolution of palaeochannels is the deposition of lahar. In sum, this research shows that volcanic activities over a long period of time have provided great and important contributions that have driven the landform evolution. The various changes that occur also reveal the unique morphological characteristics, showing the influence of the volcanic processes.

Opis:
In the Holocene, the Narew and Biebrza Rivers formed their valleys in large melt-out depressions in the area of the North Podlasie Lowland. However, these rivers developed their valleys in various ways. The activity of rivers was limited only to a part of melt-out depressions. At the end of the Pleistocene, the Narew and the Biebrza were braided rivers. In the older Holocene the Narew River ran between Suraż and Tykocin, and erosion with subsequent lowering of valley bottom caused its later swamping. The braided Narew River built up the inflowing cone near the connection with the Biebrza Lower Basin that was eroded throughout the whole Holocene era. The remaining fragments of the flood terrace are the effects of this process. The Biebrza River in the Lower Basin began to create its valley in the younger Holocene among growing peats. This process led to the formation of the valley as a mineral dam among peatlands. The change of hydroecological conditions in the latter period resulted in the transformation of the alluvial Biebrza valley into a muddy valley.

Opis:
The long-term evolution of the river beds of Nida River in Pińczów and Wiślica gauging station as well as an analysis of the causes of significant cases of lowering of the bottom of stream beds are presented in the paper. The intensity of river bed evolution as a stochastic process is described with the use of a statistical model. The analysis of the intensity of the process of river bed erosion was conducted under the assumption that the observed long-term trend of the lowest annual water levels reflect the elevation of the river bottom in the same years. The recorded observations at the Pińczów and Wiślica gauging stations on the Nida River, covering over 70-year period of time, are analyzed. Observations of the variability in the studied bottom levels over the decades allow concluding that the great transformation of riverbeds occurred there. The observations and calculations show that in Pińczów multistream or meandering river bed changed into straight channel and the process of shallowing of the river bed appeared. At the Wiślica gauging station the process of riverbed erosion with the variable intensity was observed. The research shows that the causes of these changes observed in Pińczów and Wiślica are not natural, but rather of human activity.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki analiz zmian krajobrazu w dolinie Wieprz w granicach Nadwieprzańskiego Parku Krajobrazowego w ciągu ostatnich 100 lat.
The paper presents the results of the analysis of landscape changes in the River Wieprz valley in Nadwieprzański Landscape Park over the past 100 years. For comparative studies a number of archival and contemporary topographic maps and orthophotomaps were used. Changes in forest cover and water conditions and a detailed analysis of changes in land use for the years 1977-2005 were worked out on the collected material. Ten test fields representing three sections of the River Wieprz valley were selected for the detailed research. Application of GIS software allowed to present the main directions and the pace of changes in the landscape of each section of the River Wieprz valley. In less than 30 years in all ten test fields, the decrease in arable land and the increase of woods, meadows and pastures areas were noticeable. The pace of change is different in each of the three test sections, as well as in each field test. The largest changes are observed in the southern part of Nadwieprzański Landscape Park.

Opis:
This study aimed to reconstruct environmental changes in the Wkra River Valley near Bielawy Gołuskie (central Poland) based on geochemical, palynological and subfossil Cladocera analysis of deposits filling a palaeo-oxbow lake. Two sediment boreholes collected from the palaeochannel bend (BG-1) and neck (BG-2) include full sequences of organic deposits lying on clastic deposits. The lower part of the BG-1 borehole contains gyttja that accumulated during the Younger Dryas and the Preboreal, which is covered by reed peat of Preboreal and Boreal age. On top of this is alder peat that accumulated during the Atlantic. The ages of the gyttja and peat were confirmed by both radiocarbon dating and palynological analysis. The peats are characterized by a significant content of organic matter, which is relatively stable over time. This indicates a low intensity of mechanical denudation in the catchment, which is supported by low concentrations of aluminum and potassium. Calcium values greatly exceed these elements, suggesting that the lake was mainly fed by groundwater. Variation in trophic conditions over time is indicated by a vertical variability in the content of nitrogen, as well as by the Cladocera population. The strong decomposition of peat in the top layer of the mire, and increased concentrations of phosphorus and heavy metals, testify to increasing human activity during the most recent time periods.

Opis:
Based on geological and paleobotanic data, the oldest valley system of the Niemen River is linked in the study area with a river located southward of Grodno, within a parallel valley from the Alexandrian (Mazovian) Interglacial. The foundations of the present-day, almost meridian course of the Niemen River valley, are connected with a system of post-glacial lakes from the Sozhian (Wartanian) Stadial of the Pripethian (Odranian) Glaciation, later filled with organic deposits of the Muravian (Eemian) Interglacial. Analysis of six sites with these deposits (Pyszki, Rumlówka, Poniemuń, Żukiewicze, Bohatyrowicze and Kniażewodce) indicates that they represent three lakes located at different altitudes. During the maximal range of the Dvinian (Main) Stadial of the Poozerian (Vistulian) Glaciation, the lakes were beyond the range of the ice-sheet. At this time, the highest located deposits of the Poniemuń-Żukiewicze lake were covered by sander sediments, whereas the Bohatyrowicze-Kniażewodce and Pyszki-Rumlówka lakes that were located at lower levels, were covered by fluvio-periglacial deposits and varved clays of the Skidel ice-dammed lake. Retreat of the ice-sheet of the Dvinian Stadial, resulting in outflow of water from the Skidel ice-dammed lake through the area with the two lower interglacial lakes, triggered the formation of a system of the Niemen River supra-flood terraces above them. Accumulation of the highest of these terraces (VI), during the first phase of the Skidel lake outflow, marks the beginning of the present-day Niemen River valley formation that probably began in the younger phases of the Dvinian ice-sheet retreat. Further evolution of the valley is linked with the Late Glacial formation of the middle (III-V) supra-flood terraces and with the Holocene formation of the lower (II, I) supra-flood terraces.

Opis:
The malacofauna of two profiles of deposits filling palaeomeanders of the Bug River Valley was studied. The first one (Zaczopki) represents an older phase of the valley development corresponding with the Early Holocene or even with the Late Glacial. Its assemblage contains numerous shells of cold-tolerant species. The second profile is situated near the village Woroblin. It represents a younger stage of the valley evolution (uppermost part of the Middle Holocene and Late Holocene). The mollusc fauna is typical of shallow and overgrown, stagnant water bodies. The sequences of mollusc aasemblages from both profiles characterise the development of these reservoirs, corresponding with climatic changes and differences in fluvial activity of the Bug River during the Holocene.

Assessment of anthropogenic changes in morphological conditions, hydrological regime and the continuity of the ecosystem, as well as in physicochemical properties, is important for the assessment of ecological conditions of surface waters consistent with the Water Framework Directive. The River Habitat Survey (RHS) is one of the many popular methods used in Poland for the assessment of hydromorphological conditions of rivers. This system has been used in Poland since 1997 by several scientific centres. In 2007, the first Polish version of the textbook on RHS fieldwork was prepared and courses related to the method were organised by the Department of Ecology and Environmental Protection, University of Life Sciences in Poznań. Since then, the method has been commonly used, both by scientists and by practitioners. By the end of 2013, 200 people were trained in the application of the RHS method. The method has been used to assess the hydromorphological status of rivers and as a complementary tool in the assessment of ecological conditions, under the Habitats Directive, with reference to habitat 3260, to assess the continuity of river ecological corridors and suitability of spawning grounds for sea trout and salmon, to assess the process and effects of renaturalization of rivers, and to assess the impact exerted by an investment on the environment (OOŚ). The research was conducted in different types of lowland, upland, and montane watercourses. Both natural watercourses and artificial channels were investigated, as well as morphologically transformed river sections. Some of the studies were conducted in protected areas (in national and landscape parks) characterized by a high degree of hydromorphological naturalness. The method proved to be useful in each of the above-mentioned types of watercourses, allowing reliable assessment, and also in the case of severely transformed rivers with an entirely artificial, concrete, trapezoidal channel and urban sections of watercourses. The paper presents a review of 100 Polish and foreign papers on the use of the RHS method in Poland. A synthesis of information on the evolution of the method in Poland was performed, scientific and practical examples of its application were presented together with advantages and disadvantages of the system, the most common mistakes made in the relevant literature, and RHS was analysed in relation to geomorphological and hydrographic research conducted in Poland. The advantages of the RHS method emphasized by many authors include its affordability, simplicity and comprehensiveness of the description of a watercourse together with a river valley at a distance of 50 m from a river bed. The major advantage consists in the assessment of hydromorphological conditions based on direct measurements performed in the field, which allows collection of current data on the real condition of river habitats.
